This guy got probation for actually assaulting children years ago. But he faces a minimum of 10 years for texting and walking? Anybody else think that's fucked up? Don't get me wrong, he should be put away for life, as far as I'm concerned. But why the light sentence for actual assault?

R23, I think it's that parole and probation violations prompt heavier sentences. You've proven yourself unreliable/without remorse and more likely to keep doing it. There's little room for *any* bad behavior because of the fact you are on probation
