R3 I think he just retired. When he was active, there were very few, if any, meaty Asian roles in Hollywood. So he left for China, shot some TV series and films there, but not as successful as expected. He has always been a private person after all, so he probably just quit the whole game and leads the life of a recluse now.

R99 Takeshi Kaneshiro is a virtual recluse. He divides his spare time between Japan and Taiwan, and now works mostly in China. He's rarely given interviews throughout his career and never talked about his private life. His sexuality has been speculated since the day one, but he's also said to have had some girlfriends, including Judy Lin, who was his stylist when he was a commercial model. Charlie Yeung, who was in Wong Kar-wai's Ashes of Time, is said to have chosen Nicky Wu over Takeshi in a love triangle. He's also rumored in recent years to have secretly married, as what Andy at R85 did back then. None of the relationships has ever been confirmed.
Here's a CNN interview with Takeshi, one of his very few interviews you can find on the Internet.

He got a humble start as a College kid playing in goofy teen comedies like PRINCESS PRINCESS, and also in gay-interest exploitation films such as the erotic tragic drama BOYS LOVE. I'm filming a role in a big budget Korean movie next year starring Ha Jung Woo, who is apparently the Tom Cruise of Korea. I haven't followed Korean cinema but has anyone heard of him? Son Ye Jin is the female lead, and pop star Im Shi Wan is the other male lead.
I'm going to get lots of pictures and see if I can get on the K-POP site with them!

And he deserves an ass pic here.

For consideration in the obscure/retired/WHET tier: Vancouver's own Justin Wong, former child actor who famously played Olympic figure-skater Ken Wu in the Disney MIGHTY DUCKS franchise and a role in the cult tv series of the late '90s MILLENNIUM with Lance Henriksen. He also did a huge Blockbuster x NFL commercial in the early '90s for which footage seems to have disappeared.
Like most Asians playing in ensemble American films, Justin always played a nationality other than his own Chinese ethnicity - for example, Kenny of the Mighty Ducks Junior team is written a Korean-American character (Justin was the only kid they auditioned).
He has a refreshingly gentle and sensible success story for a former child actor, maybe down to his Asian family keeping him grounded. He used his Disney money for a College fund, and after studying in England he became a sound engineer with his own studio doing well for himself. He voluntarily left acting in College saying he had no real passion for it compared to his love of audio tech work, and true to his word he hasn't acted on screen or stage since 1998 and hasn't worked on a movie project in any capacity since 2005. He has stuck with casual hockey playing & viewing, however, thanks to the DUCKS movies and to his stint in peewee leagues as a kid. According to a recent podcast interview, he is never recognised except at Disney events or NHL games where fans still quack or chant at him.

Sad that no one here has mentioned Mako (Makoto Iwamatsu), Tony and Academy Award-nominated actor who was one of the first Asian actors to be recognized in American film. One of the co-founders of East-West Players, a Los Angeles-based theatre company dedicated to supporting the work of Asian-American writers and performers. He broke color barriers and fought yellow-face for decades, opening doors for most of the actors posted here.
He was a class act.

R138. I agree about Mako. He was a legend. I'm an elderfrau and he was all over TV in the 1960s and 1970s, and his presence and talent would elevate whatever he appeared in. He was in an episode of The Time Tunnel where he gave an astonishing performance in an otherwise mediocre series.

The same is true for Hideaki Takizawa as well, who was really cute at his peak (for me, as Yoshitsune in the NHK Taiga series). He has been the vice president of Johnny & Associates since this year, so he successfully transitioned to a career behind the stage/screen.

Ryuhei Matsuda, a legacy actor (he’s the son of the late actor Yūsaku who played Sato in Ridley Scott’s BLACK RAIN) who has played several gay & homoromantic roles since his adolescence in the ‘90s.
His starmaking role was as the alluring Shinsengumi youth in 1999’s GOHATTO (eng. TABOO), a gay-interest romantic period-drama by Nagisa Ōshima, a part he performed at just 15 years old after dropping out of high-school. This garnered Ryuhei numerous ‘Best Actor/Newcomer’ awards, and the film almost netted a ‘Best Film’ at Cannes 2000 (narrowly losing out to DANCER IN THE DARK); however Ryuhei’s young age at the time of filming and the insinuations of gay sex between historical figures in the movie caused a stir.
A few years later Ryuhei took the lead in an experimental homoerotic crime-drama from 2006 titled 46-OKUNEN NO KOI (eng. A 4.6-BILLION YEAR LOVE, aka BIG BANG LOVE) by the dark eccentric controversial filmmaker Takashi Miike. The role saw Ryuhei tackling the issues of Male rape and Male-Male relationships in prison environments in a very sadistic & unsettling way (a hallmark of Miike’s work). Again this provoked many resultant whisperings about the actor’s true sexuality.
The dramas Ryuhei stars in these days are less violent and potently eroticised, but still suggest a leaning toward gay or homoromantic themes. Next year his drama EIRI (eng. THE BACK OF SHADOW, trailer in the link below) will air, and it looks to focus on a Male love albeit a chaste tragic one.
I don’t believe the actor is gay, however, given he had a longterm relationship with a female Russian model and has a child with her (though they’re divorced now). I imagine like most pretty Japanese Male actors he’s bi/flexible for roles or for co-stars he has chemistry with, but straight in his life outside of work to please his family.
