Chrissy Metz's Shares Her Weight-Loss Journey in Her Own Words

And why she's so much more than a number on a scale.

Chrissy Metz is finally "doing what I want to do," the 38-year-old actress revealed in her 2018 cover story for Glamour. "There are so many times in my life that I didn’t express how I felt," she said. "Now I really try to remember, okay, Chrissy, this is your life, and you are entitled to do what you want."

One thing the Emmy-nominated actress behind Kate Pearson on This Is Us has never shied away from is expressing how she feels about body image and weight issues. Show creator Dan Fogelman modeled the role after his own sister's weight-loss journey — and the authenticity rang through the first time Metz read the script.

"Here was this woman who was actually dealing with weight. Not like, 'Oh my God, I gained a pound,'" Metz told the Hollywood Reporter in 2017. "She was a real woman who was really struggling, and all I could think was, ‘Oh my God, I’m Kate.'"

Here's what the actress has said about self-image and her own weight-loss experiences, and how it's affected her role on the show.

Weight LOSS journey? The journey has been immeasurably short!

by Anonymousreply 2October 9, 2019 12:47 AM

I'll share my journey-- just don't ask me to share my pie!

by Anonymousreply 3October 9, 2019 12:49 AM

Her long and arduous weight loss journey began at 12pm and lasted until 2pm.

His sister had a snack purse?

by Anonymousreply 5October 9, 2019 1:16 AM

Is this snack purse fact or fiction?

by Anonymousreply 6October 9, 2019 1:25 AM
Chrissy Metz was designing her own clothes long before she started collaborating with stylists and seamstresses on red carpet looks. The This Is Us star’s interest in fashion started at a young age, and she’s opening up to PEOPLE about how the lack of options available to curvy women led her to find other ways to express herself.
“I was the only chubby girl in my friend group. I remember Wet Seal becoming popular when I was in school, but the clothes didn’t fit me the same way they fit my friends,” she shares. “Only Lane Bryant had clothing I could wear.”
Metz adds: “I had to make [my style] my own, because otherwise you’d look like someone’s grandma and you’re 14.”
Instead of having clothing swaps with her friends, the star began trading accessories.
“I got super creative. [bold]I made a purse out of an old Baskin Robbins ice cream tub,” she shares,[/bold] adding that she also made bags out of old jeans and would bedazzle T-shirts she found at the local thrift store in her hometown of Homestead, Florida.

In her own words? Of course they are in her own words because the lazy bitch has had no journey. What would the writer write? "Metz still struggles with her weight loss. There are days when Metz just cannot say no to a bag of Doritos - or two."

The only journey for Metz is to the fridge.

She is a danger to society. Promoting her as someone whose body we should embrace is just another reason why our lazy society continues to become more obese.

by Anonymousreply 9October 9, 2019 1:54 AM
Weight LOSS journey? The journey has been immeasurably short

We’ll have found our way out of the desert long before her journey is over.

by Anonymousreply 10October 9, 2019 1:58 AM

When does she plan on starting this journey?

by Anonymousreply 11October 9, 2019 2:16 AM

Weight LOSS? Maybe from the time she drops one of her mammoth shits to the time she can hit Baskin-Robbins again.

If she’s legit “losing” pounds, girl must be shrinking because she’s looking much larger.

by Anonymousreply 12October 9, 2019 2:28 AM

The media should be ashamed of themselves for treating her “weight problem” like she’s 20 pounds overweight. The woman is a truck. Like a semi.

by Anonymousreply 13October 9, 2019 2:29 AM

how much this cow lose????? .05 lbs?????? good god, she huge

by Anonymousreply 14October 9, 2019 6:55 AM

When you’re that big anything less than twenty lbs doesn’t really show.

by Anonymousreply 15October 9, 2019 8:39 AM

She is the quintessential "But she has such a pretty face" overweight woman. There is a stunner under there.

by Anonymousreply 16October 9, 2019 8:45 AM

A journey of a thousand snacks begins with a single bite.

by Anonymousreply 17October 9, 2019 8:55 PM

Or 200 lbs R15.

by Anonymousreply 18October 9, 2019 8:56 PM

200lbs would be a decent start for Chrissy.

by Anonymousreply 19October 9, 2019 9:02 PM

She only weighs like 275 pounds supposedly

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2019 3:41 AM

We all know she was contracted to lose weight, and the writer confirms that. She has not lost any weight at all, but god forbid they invoke the clause cause all the fatties would lose their shit.

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2019 4:05 AM

I'm sure she's happy to work the "Woe is me, I'm trying to lose weight" schtick because it brings her attention and sympathy, but I doubt she has much interest in actually losing weight. So long as she's the first person that agents think of for the fat-girl parts, she's got a career. She's not going to mess with that.

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2019 4:16 AM

I agree R16. She's very pretty.

by Anonymousreply 23October 13, 2019 4:23 AM

She must eat A LOT to maintain that weight.

by Anonymousreply 24October 13, 2019 4:48 AM

Toby her husband on the show has been working out, the guy probably got sick of wearing a fat suit

by Anonymousreply 25October 13, 2019 6:47 AM

The girl has flawless makeup and hair but she is perfectly round in shape!

by Anonymousreply 26October 13, 2019 7:13 AM

She has the same problem as other obese girls with pretty face.

If she lose weight, she loses her pretty face too + tons of loose skin requiring surgery.

That's why she won't lose weight for the time being. Maybe she'll do something after her first heart attack if it's not too late.

I hope the producers had fired her fat ass. She can be the obese girl with a pretty face in other tv shows.

by Anonymousreply 27October 13, 2019 7:45 AM

She should invoke the spirit of Karen Carpenter. But , she would still be a Fat ass.

by Anonymousreply 28October 13, 2019 8:08 AM

She's like the love child of an angry glee fan and a beach ball

by Anonymousreply 29October 13, 2019 8:39 AM

She only has a career because of her size. The bigger she gets, the bigger her career will become. She must keep eating. She needs a feeder now.

by Anonymousreply 30October 13, 2019 9:04 AM

Last time I saw her, I thought she weighed about 400 lbs. Has she lost weight?

by Anonymousreply 31October 13, 2019 9:18 AM

I fe4el very sorry for her.

by Anonymousreply 32October 13, 2019 9:21 AM

I feel very sorry for her.

by Anonymousreply 33October 13, 2019 9:22 AM

I dont' know if I feel sorry for her.

If she's trying and can't lose weight because mental problems or others, I'm sorry for her.

If she doesn't lose weight because she doesn't give a fuck, I don't feel bad for her.

by Anonymousreply 34October 13, 2019 9:26 AM

I didn't realize she was 38. She needs to get serious about this before menopause strikes.

Honestly I hope she just gets the surgery. I feel like that's the only hope for a lot of the super fatties, because regular diet and exercise is difficult to sustain for as long as it takes to lose 250 pounds, or however much extra baggage she's got. I know it's a crutch but if having that extra bit of help works and actually gets them to a healthy weight, it's ultimately a good thing.

by Anonymousreply 35October 13, 2019 10:19 AM
When the show first aired, Metz revealed that she signed a contract with a clause requiring her to lose weight along with her character.

How can I put this nicely. This week on the show where Toby's now going to the gym makes me think they've abandoned this plan entirely.

by Anonymousreply 36October 13, 2019 11:54 AM

Lmao at Kate being upset Toby is taking care of himself and she’s not and blaming him for her not losing weight.

by Anonymousreply 37October 13, 2019 2:56 PM

I doubt that R30. Every chubby or obese actor that started her career "fat and proud" eventually gave in to the powers that be and slimmed down. Every.Single.One. Melissa McCarthy, America Ferrera, Mo'Nique, Gabourey Sidibe, Ricki Lake, etc.... All of these women were a lot bigger when they started out but lost the weight so they could extend their careers and remain employable. I was especially surprised when Mo'Nique slimmed down because I remember how proud and outspoken she was about being a big woman who wouldn't change for anybody. If Chrissy wants to continue working after This is Us, she'll probably have to lose some weight eventually.

by Anonymousreply 38October 13, 2019 3:59 PM

R38 I think most of them did it for their health more than for their career.

by Anonymousreply 39October 14, 2019 9:28 AM

“Just the one, dear?”

by Anonymousreply 40October 14, 2019 9:35 AM

She’s waiting for that show to end and the have a comeback as a slimmer new gal ready to take on the world!

by Anonymousreply 41October 14, 2019 9:44 AM

I find this woman exceptionally annoying and wish she would stop talking to the media because increasingly it seems the world is expected to continue to enable and empower her and it’s ridiculous. Being overweight is one thing, and being fat is another. This woman has crossed the line and morbidly obese and as such she is a danger to herself and now, given her high profile, she is a danger to others. She needs to stop with the fucking delusions. Glamour needs to stop giving her a platform to air these delusions. She is fat because she saw her mother go without eating as a child so that her kids had enough to eat? Okay lady, WHATEVER.

It would help if she seemed at all likeable but weight aside she genuinely seems like a horrible person. I’m over it. Enough with this person.

by Anonymousreply 46October 25, 2019 6:31 AM

"The media should be ashamed of themselves for treating her “weight problem” like she’s 20 pounds overweight. The woman is a truck. Like a semi."

Exactly ! They don't address any of the real issues she has.

by Anonymousreply 47October 25, 2019 7:18 AM

Chrissy is trying to normalise obesity.

by Anonymousreply 48October 25, 2019 7:57 AM

All of this bullshit seemed to start in the 70s with Phil Donahue and then Oprah, justifying any behavior with psychobabble.

by Anonymousreply 49October 25, 2019 10:24 AM

I really think the media is doing her a huge injustice by giving her a platform to say she's "healthy" at an "unconventional size". I have to look away when she's on screen, it's just uncomfortable to watch. Why do the people around her think they are helping her by normalizing this. If they really cared they'd be staging an intervention lead by a professional in these matters. I know you can't make people stop eating/drinking/drugging until they want to but at least the people around her would have a clear conscience that they tried if (when) she has a massive heart attack.

by Anonymousreply 50October 25, 2019 7:51 PM

R50 "I really think the media is doing her a huge injustice by giving her a platform to say she's "healthy"

I agree. What needs to be discussed is the fear she faces that everywhere she goes there are going to be problems. Furniture she can't sit on, places she can't fit in, things that break because of her weight. It's real, not the fluff she's handing out.

by Anonymousreply 51October 26, 2019 5:52 AM

Oh, god, will you fags leave this girl alone already?! Stop being such a stereotype.

by Anonymousreply 52October 26, 2019 5:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 53October 26, 2019 6:04 AM

That Power Women or whatever “interview” is terrible. She’s an awful speaker. It’s just a total hash, a word salad. None of it makes any sense. She seems barely literate. The mental gymnastics she’s doing to justify her fatness be hugely exhausting because she sounds like she’s impaired.

by Anonymousreply 56October 27, 2019 1:42 AM

For all the people wondering how someone on a weight loss journey can gain so much weight I recommend to watch "Foodie beauty" and "Amberlyn Reid" Youtube channels.

by Anonymousreply 57October 28, 2019 8:01 AM

This is sick. Nobody would praise an end-stage alcoholic for their healthy lifestyle, so why are we doing it for morbidly obese people like Chrissy M.

by Anonymousreply 58October 28, 2019 8:08 AM

Because there's a market R58.

More and more people are obese or morbidly obese. But those people buy food (obviously), clothes, furnitures, books, make up etc.

More and more people are ready to buy what Chrissy has to sell: "All is good, there's nothing wrong with you. You just have big bones, now buy my book."

by Anonymousreply 59October 28, 2019 8:16 AM

Her weight-loss journey is a round-trip.

by Anonymousreply 60October 28, 2019 8:42 AM

I actually find her a very compelling actress. It's her weight that's distracting. It's all I can focus on. It be fun to see her lose weight (and have loose skin removed of course) and see what she really has to offer.

by Anonymousreply 61October 28, 2019 9:11 AM

'Coat of Many Acres'

'The Night the Chair Gave Out in Georgia'

by Anonymousreply 103October 31, 2019 5:36 PM

Melissa McCarthy was at least funny and Gabourey Sidibe received some acclaim as an actress.

I was looking at a yearbook with an old friend this week. We graduated HS in 1988 (so, yes, Elder). We had a classmate or two who were “fat”. In my mind, I remember this girl being absolutely huge, the fattest girl at school. My friend and I were sort of surprised to look at photos and see that she wasn’t that big, compared to today’s standards. She wasn’t obese, just heavy (by today’s srandards).

by Anonymousreply 114November 1, 2019 10:27 AM

If that Ellen clip is from three years ago, she looks like she's gained weight, not lost it. It's a shame because she has naturally nice features, but they're obscured under all of the fat on her body. She has to be a candidate for gastric bypass, and I'm surprised she hasn't done it, as she clearly has an eating disorder. Gabourey Sidibe has lost a lot of weight since she underwent the surgery. There is really no reason for Chrissy not to; surgery is risky when you're morbidly obese, but at this rate she is heading toward a surefire death by heart attack.

by Anonymousreply 115November 1, 2019 10:30 AM

She's out there living her best life. Recording a soon to be hit album (with covers like D-E-S-S-E-R-T, Appetizer No. 9, I Hope You Wheeze, Pantry Miner's Daughter, Whose Reinforced Bed Have Your Boots Been Under, She's in Love with the Pie, When Cardio-Fearin' Women Get the Blues), starring on a highly-rated TV show (and bound to win a pity Emmy any year now), and has hundreds of men dying to sleep with her (so long as she doesn't roll over).

What about you?

by Anonymousreply 116November 1, 2019 10:51 AM

Melissa McCarthy was like a quarter of Chrissy’s size even at her heaviest.

by Anonymousreply 117November 1, 2019 11:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 120November 1, 2019 11:58 AM

250 lbs is still fat. And especially for a leading lady.

Which is proof Chrissy could lost 100, 200 pounds still be Hwood's go-to fat actress.

Melissa was definitely obese, but she is able to do a lot of physical comedy. There’s a scene in “Bridesmaids” where she hikes her leg up in the air and she is surprisingly flexible. Maybe it was a trick of the camera.

Not sure why I mentioned it. She’s not immobilized by her fat, is my point.

You don’t have to be a stick figure to be a leading lady. She’s proven that.

I like the look at R111, I HATE R112

by Anonymousreply 124November 1, 2019 5:42 PM

She usually looks much worse. She looks best when dressed like a Vegas drag act.

That’s quite a journey.

Think she’ll find her neck?

by Anonymousreply 127November 3, 2019 1:26 PM

Her story about growing up in poverty seems off. She had the money to move to LA at some point and live there pursuing her dreams despite the fact it would be a decade until she got any sizable work. What connection did she have to get a job as an agent? She might've had only 81c in her bank account (as she repeats constantly) when she booked TIU but she obviously was still managing to eat how much a week in groceries and eating out? $600 maybe?

by Anonymousreply 128November 3, 2019 1:33 PM

Is she shoplifting sacks of sand?

by Anonymousreply 129November 3, 2019 5:14 PM

Something nice at r126. That color is great for her.

by Anonymousreply 130November 3, 2019 5:26 PM

I was going hungry when I booked THIS IS US. I was down to only ten, twelve thousand calories a day.

by Anonymousreply 131November 3, 2019 6:06 PM

R126 Is that her leg sticking out there? It looks like two racks of lamb!

by Anonymousreply 132November 3, 2019 6:50 PM

R132 - I actually think that's a stomach flap which means she's toast if she doesn't do some type of surgical intervention soon.

by Anonymousreply 133November 3, 2019 9:44 PM

R133 Good God! That's even worse!

by Anonymousreply 134November 3, 2019 9:56 PM

R128 I thought she had a job as a script supervisor. The problem with most entertainment jobs is that they are not permanent. You might work be script supervisor on one movie and then get nothing for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 135November 3, 2019 10:05 PM

I don’t think she went to college. How did she become a script supervisor?

by Anonymousreply 136November 4, 2019 2:05 PM

I threatened to eat the producer if she didn't hire me.

by Anonymousreply 137November 4, 2019 2:27 PM

[R77] my first LOL moment of the day. Thank you!

by Anonymousreply 138November 4, 2019 2:35 PM

Any weight loss less than 20lb won’t show?

Less than 80, more like it.

by Anonymousreply 139November 4, 2019 2:38 PM

Back in season 3 they claimed her character had lost forty pounds.

Chrissy hadn't of course. They only got away with it because that's a drop in the ocean for her.

by Anonymousreply 140November 4, 2019 2:40 PM

They fat character should have been played by someone, say, the size of Jennifer Hudson at her heaviest. ie obviously fatter than she should be but not morbidly obese.

by Anonymousreply 141November 4, 2019 2:46 PM

She's obviously in denial and making excuses for her inability to lose weight and keep it off. I understand she had a tough upbringing, but she was handed the role of her lifetime with this tv show. Her net worth is estimated to be $7 million. Any sane person would realize that they had hit the jackpot and would put in the work to get healthy so that they stick around to enjoy that money.

She needs a personal chef, a trainer and a psychiatrist and not necessarily in that order.

by Anonymousreply 142November 4, 2019 5:15 PM

R136 It was my #MeToo moment.

by Anonymousreply 143November 10, 2019 4:26 AM
She is the quintessential "But she has such a pretty face" overweight woman. There is a stunner under there.

Yes, but the poor girl was killed instantly when Chrissy landed on her.

by Anonymousreply 144November 10, 2019 4:29 AM

Chrissy so fat when anyone yells ‘Hey Koolaid,’ she comes crashing through the wall.

by Anonymousreply 145November 10, 2019 4:49 AM

R145 Same shape
