Only the best 60's music

I'll start with one which I consider the best song of the decade and one of the best songs of all time.

Put's you instantly in a good mood and it's timeless. It almost feels like it could have been written and performed anytime between the 19th Century and today and become an instant hit.

Yours?

I love this clip. It's sort of an obscure Supreme's song but it's wonderful. Love the set and the color scheme with the black gowns. Sooo stylish.

I'm loving all the songs posted here, and am happy to see so many early '60s tunes. The music from the first 3/4 of the decade had such a spunky innocence about it. In the latter quarter of the decade, things got a bit darker and more psychedelic—which is great in its own way, but there is something refreshing about those innocent radio hits of the early '60s.

I played "12:30" one time, and you tube, for reasons known only to you tube, added it and four other M&P's songs to an existing playlist it plays on repeat of '60s and '80s songs.

Right now it's "Bette Davis Eyes." After that comes "Our Lips Are Sealed." Then:

"Running up That Hill"

"Walk Away, Renee"

"Will You Love Me Tomorrow?"

practically every hit by the Supremes and then Diana Ross.

But only two songs by my favorite singer, many of whose songs I've listened to on you tube, "Long, Long Time" and "Different Drum."

How does you tube decide what I like? And don't like?

Met one of the band members. Said the line was supposed to be, "In the garden of Eden." However the band was too polluted to sing the lyrics clearly during the recording session. So instead of spending the money to re-record it they chose the closest possible words to write as the official version.
What's weird about that clip is that Diana Ross seems to be singing live, but she told the producers: "Cindy and Mary are NOT to be given mics."

I know your post is probably tongue-in-cheek, but just to clarify, this clip is from the Ed Sullivan show where ALL group acts were presented as follows: group singing and back-ups were pre-recorded at the Sullivan facilities ( i.e., NOT a click track nor a studio session recording but an actual recording with a “live feel” with no mixing or padding). Same with band acts (i.e. instruments pre-recorded there). Then in the actual broadcast, the soloist(s) was/were given a live feed mic so they could go to town with their performance.

This was all done to achieve a live but controlled delivery. It was the Ed Sullivan way.

R180 is Lou Christie's biggest hit, but my favorite is his last top ten hit from '69 "I'm Gonna Make You Mine".

R284:

"Back In My Arms Again"

All day long I hear my telephone ring Friends calling giving their advice From the boy I love I should break away 'Cause heartaches he'll bring one day

I lost him once through friends' advice But it's not gonna happen twice 'Cause all advice ever gotten me Was many long and sleepless nights

Ooh! But now he's back in my arms again Right by my side I got him back in my arms again So satisfied

It's easy for friends to say let him go But I'm the one who needs him so It's his love that makes me strong Without him I can't go on

This time I'll live my life at ease Being happy lovin' whom I please And each time we make romance I'll be thankful for a second chance

Ooh! 'Cause he's back in my arms again Right by my side I got him back in my arms again So satisfied Ooh!

How can Mary tell me what to do When she lost her love so true? And Flo, she don't know 'Cause the boy she loves is a Romeo

I listened once to my friends' advice But it's not gonna happen twice 'Cause all advice ever gotten me Was many long and sleepless nights

Ooh! I got him back in my arms again Right by my side I got him back in my arms again So satisfied

Ooh! I'm satisfied, yeah So satisfied I'm satisfied I'm satisfied

r284, [italic]an[/italic]other song that mentions Mary and Flo is Run-DMC's "Mary, Mary." They borrowed it from the Monkees, I believe.
"Mary, Mary" Why ya buggin'? "Mary, Mary" I need a huggin'. Had a fly girl Flo, called her honey. Next thing she spent up all my money.

I don't know if it's the song you're talking about, though.

Another Italian pop hit from the early '60s. (It charted in the US as well.):

Al di la. Enrico Pericoli

It was used in Rome Adventure (1962) with Troy Donahue and DL fave Suzanne Pleshette - a silly movie with gorgeous clothes and a pretty song.

Somehow Quando, Quando, Quando and Al Di La lead to Summer Place, the top selling single of 1960. I was going to find the top selling single of 1969, expecting it would be some psychedelic anthem for the revolution, and comment on what a turbulent and profound cultural changes happened in that decade... and then I found the top song of 1969 was Sugar, Sugar, by the Archies. So, never mind. The revolution was televised, with commercials.

The ultimate Italian crossover pop hit was "Volare," ("Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu) originally by Domenico Modugno, but covered by many people (most notably and successfully by Dean Martin and Bobby Rydell). However, it was in 1958, so I guess it doesn't count here. (But Bobby Rydell's version hit #4 on the Hot 100 in 1960, so maybe it qualifies.)
