Maybe it's because I live in NYC, but even in stores I don't think I've ever seen waist sizes on say Levis over 38 inches in a regular store.

But the stat is confusing as it's not clear whether that's the average or the mean size.

38 is the average waist size for American men. (vs mode, which means occurring the most)

There are a few giants with 60-70 in waists skewing the avg. In my anecdotal experience, most men are size 30-34.

The mean is an average and both are often used interchangeably, but there are more averages than the mean (e.g. geometric average) and other fun facts I learned in Measures of Central Tendency 101!

Perusing this site, one would think that the average size of a gay is 6' and 130. The men of the US are generally very large. Just walking around you see guys that would be considered giants a generation ago. Guys are getting taller, heavier, and more muscular. These plus-size models are the guys that are walking around. All my straight guy friends tower over me at 6' and outweigh me by sixty pounds. Give me more of these guys, huge and hot!
