Like any isolated community, in remote locales or a small group within a larger, different population, quirks and common place interests develop. Don't dismiss the things that don't interest you, for many years those interests promoted safe communities where people could be themselves.

Also, I live in an area where many, many gays live and have for a long time (SF Bay Area). Many of the younger, educated gay men are like you. They are an integrated part of the community when in the past we had gay ghettos. So much has changed, it's good to know yourself and be who you are.

Generally, those who don't have any children will seek alternative ways to leave their legacy, and take up art or creative endeavors. Having no children to take care of also allows gays to spend more time learning a new skill or traveling. Sex is not necessarily more important to gay men, just easier to get.
