gluttons of Hollywood

I always thought Marlon Brando was the biggie, but check this out about Gary Cooper, from IMDB:

[quote]His appetite was prodigious, but no matter how much he ate, he always remained thin. During his early years in Hollywood, working odd jobs and living with his parents, he said, he said with some comic exaggeration, that his "starvation diet at the time ran to no less than a dozen eggs a day, a couple of loaves of bread, a platter of bacon, and just enough pork chops between meals to keep me going until I got home for supper." His specialty on hunting trips was gargantuan: wild duck covered with bacon strips, enhanced by four eggs and steak. He could eat a cherry pie and drink a quart of milk for lunch.

He probably exercised a lot and purged.

This is crazy but true:

The basic element of Elvis' daily food intake was a 30-cm long bread roll, stuffed with bacon, peanut butter and strawberry jam. Each one had 42,000 calories, and in his final days, he ate two of them per day, together with little midnight snacks of hamburgers and deep-fried white bread.

Someone it makes me love him all the more.

Judy Garland used to eat lunch with Ava Gardner when they were teen contract players, and boil with resentment as she picked at her mandatory little bowl of chicken soup, while Gardner ate big steak lunches with pie afterwards, and never gained an ounce. Until she was older, anyway.

It was the same for Liz Taylor, up until her thirties. In her teens and twenties she could eat anything and not gain an ounce, but look how that turned out.

[quote]Velez purportedly claimed that Cooper “has the biggest organ in Hollywood but not the ass to push it in well.”

[quote] Lupe Velez ...loved acting “low-class,” and threw parties with cock fights and “stag films,” a.k.a. thinly veiled porn. She got in fights, especially over men, and was prone to extreme jealousy. To wit: angry over Cooper’s close friendship with Anderson Lawler, known, in the time’s parlance, as a “swisher,” or flamboyant homosexual, Velez supposedly “unzipped Cooper’s fly at a social gathering and started sniffing his crotch, claiming to smell Lawler’s cologne.”

[quote]Cooper became a hero to many, even as he developed a reputation as one of the most notorious philanderers in Hollywood. He had stiff competition — Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, the list goes on — but Cooper may or may not have slept with EVERY. SINGLE. CO-STAR. No matter his age, no matter their age, he was insatiable, before and during his marriage.

[quote] he filmed The Wolf Song with Lupe Velez. Cooper plays a cowboy who somehow makes his way to Taos, where he meets Velez and falls in love, but nevertheless feels drawn by the call of adventure. Sounds like every guy trying to get out of staying together with his girlfriend for summer break, but bygones. The film is mostly forgotten, but you might seek it out simply because it shows Cooper in full-frontal, Fassbender-style nudity.

HOW is Gary Cooper NOT a DL hero for the ages?

by Anonymousreply 5September 29, 2019 10:32 PM

Not a glutton, but I would guess that John Travolta enjoys eating good food. In this "25 Things" from US magazine he says he's a "decent cook" and also says he admire's Barbra Streisand's basement "mall":

[quote] I envy Barbra Streisand’s museum, filled with her iconic costumes.

Maybe Trump is trying to be the King by mimicking Elvis.

Orson Welles. According to Town & Country, "His favorite meal was two rare steaks and a pint of Scotch." However, this Newsweek article about all the commercials he did (Jim Beam, frozen peas, Paul Masson wine, Stovetop stuffing) is enlightening. I didn't know he did that many commercials, apparently well-paid for doing so.

[quote] At the end of Welles's life, the writer Gore Vidal often invited him to his Los Angeles home. Welles always accepted, with delight. An hour before each party, Welles invariably phoned Vidal to beg out: "I have an early call tomorrow. For a commercial. Dog food, I think it is this time. No, I do not eat from the can on camera, but I celebrate the contents. Yes, I have fallen so low."

Welles once laughingly told an interviewer that his doctor had advised him to "stop eating for four".

After her weight loss surgery. Now today. My husband’s brother had that surgery and he gained back all the weight. Sad. I think there is a more genetic equation that happens to people’s brains causing them to gorge. I personally do not like to eat, because I have such a crazy body. I love to cook for my husband and our friends.

People’s metabolisms don’t differ THAT much. I have two tall, broadly built, active teenage boys. Sometimes they eat crazy amounts. Like an entire pizza and then an hour later they want ice cream. But other days they won’t be hungry until dinner. They will have a small smoothie for breakfast and half a sandwich for lunch. Then not much more for dinner than me. It all evens out.

If you eat EXACTLY the same as a thin person and have the same activity level, you will be close to their size.

Exercise makes a difference, but it has to be a lot before someone starts eating noticeably huge amounts. Like a runner doing more than 50 miles a week or a competitive swimmer doing 8-12 workouts a week. They an eat a lot. A waitress moving on her feet for eight hour shifts five days a week will be able to eat more than her sister with an office job. But do a lot of waitresses actually clock 40 hours a week?

I just met with the shrink who prescribes for me. I mentioned in passing that I was trying to eat better and exercise more consistently. He did this crazy dance to hint but not actually say that I was probably eating more than I thought. I told him, “I know I eat too much!” I’m fat, not delusional. It’s easy to get stressed out and tired and lose sight of the long game for a few minutes. And that’s all it takes to eat a format bowl of ice cream. I’m working on it. But at least I’m not kidding myself,

I always wonder about individuals in prison who eat all the same food, but some stay overweight and some do not.

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2019 12:10 AM

elvis presley died of a heart attack............it may have had a contributing factor of drug useage but the main component was heart related which was a result of his terrible diet. Brando died of congestive heart failure. You simply cant eat huge amount of fatty food etc that clog your arteries and live to a ripe old age. No amt of exercise can offset that kind of excessive eating.

by Anonymousreply 21October 2, 2019 12:26 AM

But Brando somehow made it to 80!

John Candy's office was set up as a bar, complete with tables and a jukebox. He'd mix drinks and down them behind the bar while conducting meetings. Along with the booze, his over-eating, coke habit, and heavy smoking did him in at 43.

When I was in my teens, especially, I ate like a pig and remained thin. In my 20's and 30s I could still eat a lot and not gain weight, but at 40 I was prescribed a beta blocker and immediately gained 25 pounds.

by Anonymousreply 33November 24, 2019 1:58 PM

R20 how many of these prisoners do you know?

I did volunteer work in a prison in the US and saw wildly different food intake depending on how much the prisoners had for the prison store. It held mostly horrible food like ramen, doritos and coke but those in the gym all day would spend their stipend on beef jerkey, the fatties on sugar and coke.

by Anonymousreply 34November 24, 2019 2:12 PM

by Anonymousreply 37November 24, 2019 2:54 PM

R3, I think you're off by a decimal point. There certainly is some variation, but a sandwich like you are describing would be more like 4800 calories. That's calculating a pound of bacon, 4 oz. (8 tablespoons) each of peanut butter and jam. Still a lot of calories for one snack.

I thought Elvis' favorite sandwich was actually peanut butter, banana and bacon.

Donald Trump.

Breakfast: likes his eggs over-well, of course, with bacon. Maybe an Egg McMuffin (or 2 or 3, who knows).

Lunch: Maybe a meatloaf sandwich.

Dinner: Steak, well-done (of course) with ketchup. Or “a full McDonald’s dinner of two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and a small chocolate shake – a total of 2,430 calories.”

Gary Cooper has that big dick body where all the meat is in the dick while the rest of him remains rail thin. Seen it often - usually black or Hispanic.

by Anonymousreply 45January 5, 2020 7:05 PM
