Autism cure
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 20, 2019 7:28 PM |
I think finding a cure for the MS, which turns people into flesh eating zombies, is more important.
Or melanoma which is highly contagious and leads to skin and limbs falling off.
Or depression which makes people afraid to leave their house and eventually leads to suicides designed to take out as many others as possible.
It is a question of priorities.

I do not get this troll. At first I thought the outrageous claims about autism were funny. But now, it is just bizarre.
Recently, I have been talking with autistic people at work about this and they say there are a lot of people who believe things that the troll says.
So they are afraid to come out.

I work at a university. There are a lot of autistic people in STEM. Physics and math are majority autistic departments---but only a few realize that they are autistic because they found a profession where their pathology is an advantage.

If anyone has a real interest, I recommend Tim Page's Parallel Play: Growing Up with Undiagnosed Asperger's.
The author did not know he was autistic until he was 45 years old. He had children and was a Pulitzer Prize winning music critic. His memoir is really a great read and gives a lot of insight.

When I was growing up in the 90s there weren’t so many kids with mental issues. But we were also better behaved back then. We weren’t allowed to get away with everything under the guise of some illness.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 29, 2019 2:38 PM |
I grew up in the 70s and there were a lot of maladjusted kids who today I realize had learning disabilities and neurological disorders. Instead of treatment, they were punished. Over and over again.
There do not seem to be more kids with mental issues today. But the difference is that we try to treat the disorder.
There are theories that greater exposure to chemicals by mothers and kids in the last few decades has resulted in more children with these issues. But looking at my elementary school rosters, I would say fully a third probably had ADHD, autism, or learning disabilities.

"Aspergers" no longer exists. It was removed from the DSM. It is all "Autism Spectrum Disorder".
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 29, 2019 4:06 PM |
You can't cure a congenital cognitive illness. Autistic people will not be able to function beyond their spectrum, period. It works similarly to people with neurological degenerative disorders, you can stop or even slow down the process in some cases but you can't revert them.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 29, 2019 4:30 PM |
I teach in a STEM university and have plenty on the spectrum every semester. Most are quite fine and play by all the rules. Also we can enjoy their odd perspectives. I get a real pain in the ass maybe every other year.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 2, 2019 8:30 PM |
R36, yes. As colleagues doing research on autism point out, it is usually easier to identify autism in the classroom than in the home--or in a doctors office.
Working closely side by side with students, seeing them interact with each other over the course of years, allows detailed observation.

You’re full of 💩 r38
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 3, 2019 1:52 AM |
How do you think autism is identified, R39?
There is no physical test. It is diagnosed through observation and comparison with DSM criteria.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 3, 2019 2:10 AM |
Observation as you say, but also an account of the patient's developmental history (if available), various psychometric tests, and mostly crucially, the consensus.of a group of psychologists, psychiatrists or researchers in the field.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 3, 2019 3:04 AM |
There are proven methods that work, it is not really a cure pre se because they don't know what causes it. My niece is autistic and we all have rules to follow when we engage with her If she get stuck on or fixated on a subject we look her in the eye and say "that sounds silly, lets talk about something new." That gets her to not be repetitive. In the beginning, you have to really listen to her when she wanted something. She could not verbalize it yet in a way we understood so she would get frustrated when you could not understand her. She is light years now beyond what she was when she was first diagnosed.

Because I hated playing with other kids and only ever obsessively wanted to read or watch movies or do 'voices' with figurines my parents sent me for the tests when I was little, and it came back negative for ASD. Even still I never fit in at school or College and did not make any lasting friends or any real progress in studies or career despite excelling in a couple classes (I still have no social life and am underemployed).
I assumed my problem was because I was in the closet until age 22 and had chronic depression but after I came out then took up therapy (I'm a longtime unsuccessful behavioural patient) my issues persisted and even got worse. I struggle most with social anxiety and what the frauen call 'executive dysfunction', which basically means I am so terrified to go out in the world and do shit with other people that will help my life that I repress and shut down to the point I feel like it's a Herculaen task to leave my house or pick up a phone. Despite knowing what goals I want for myself I feel able only to go to work and walk my dog and hang out with my parents, and that is the extent of my life.
Recently I've been browsing reddits for people with mild ASD and connect with much of what is posted there. Though I pass easily as someone who is just a bit detached or 'quirky', I recognised the stimming and obsessing and the difficulties to connect with others as longstanding patterns in my life. I don't really want to come out and admit my suspicion to my folks or my Doc, however, as I don't want to hear the "I told you so" or get a permanent black stain on my records for potential employers to see and redflag.
The online community I found seem nice and emotionally supportive but I want self-help tools to get me into a better space as a method to overcome. Does anyone have experience with this? dbtselfhelp.com can only do so much. I know you all will mock and I expect nothing less, but I really do need and want help.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 3, 2019 2:28 PM |
Autism is a very, very rare illness. Now everyone has it, simply because in order to get government paid programs and perks, you have to have an illness that is defined. So they call it autism, now autism spectrum disorder.
Anyone who has seen an actual autistic child and an Asperger's syndrome sufferer can see they are not even closely the same thing. It's like saying a cold and pneumonia are the same because you both cough.
Before the new antiretrovirals (around 2010) many doctors would declare their HIV+ patients to have AIDS, simply to allow them to do on disability and get into housing and other benefits, even though they did not fit the definition.
Ask any doctor or nurse before 1990 how many autistic children they have seen in their careers and most never saw more than one or two.
Don't get me wrong autism DOES exist, no doubt. But it's is way overdiagnosed to the point, true autistics are taking the hit for these neo-autistic children.

by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 3, 2019 4:08 PM |
Thank you for the kind word R47 & R49. I appreciate the encouragement more than you know.
I've been considering re-entering therapy, but I'm admittedly burnt-out and cynical having gone through 10 years of on-off therapists all varying degrees of awful. From IPT to CBT to PA to hypnosis, I've tried it all and every single one has eventually said to me they don't know what my matter is (and have I tried yoga/long walks/book groups/getting over it?). I even tried a group once but it was peopled with folks who had all kinds of comorbid cluster disorders and that scared the hell out of me, frankly. I don't need meds or assisted living or hardcore therapy, it's more just that I'm sleepwalking through life and need someone gently shaking me awake and helping me out of bed if that makes sense? I can go places and do things alone with little problem, but no matter what I struggle to 'unmask' (that is, behave like an open natural sociable person) and make connections with people & activities, thus I don't return to them after one encounter.
I don't know what type of therapy is even effective for adults with non-severe ASD - is there a particular type to look up? Google doesn't say (in fact, the Internet and various self-help books tell me there is currently no real established therapeutic branch that is proven all that amazingly effective for supporting people with milder forms of ASD.
