Ang Lee followed Robert Zemeckis down the motion-capture rabbit hole.

Watching Will on his promotional circuit makes wonder: Did all the cult members go through the same media training? Tom Cruise, Chris Pratt and Will Smith all have this mode "on" in their interviews, where they fake enthusiasm, laugh out loud, and try to play the nice, down-to-earth guys in contrast with the image of their cults. Not that other stars don't fake on camera, but these definitely try hard.

Now Ang Lee is so enamored with cutting-edge technology and he couldn't care less about human emotions. Human heart, Lee, human heart. And Will Smith will tank any movies these days.

He got lucky with Aladdin.

Will Smith sucks and should be in no movies from now on. No Scientologists, please!

Others have said Will is like that off camera too. Very rehearsed and not genuine at all.

My guess is he picked Will Smith for this movie because he’s been doing TV since he was a teen and there’s lots of younger footage of him available. Which is important for this movie’s technology.
I saw Smith on Colbert, and he described Ang Lee in a room playing footage of Fresh Prince and several other young roles. Colbert said he thought he recognized a few seconds of Six Degrees of Separation in the film.
There aren’t many actors with that type of footage who are still fit and still have a career.

Ang Lee used to be so good. He was even able to make a decent movie of a pretty bad novel like Life of Pi, but then he had a great material with Billy Lynn's long halftime walk and he made that disaster
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 10, 2019 12:09 PM |
Ang Lee is overrated. There are so many directors from East Asia that are vastly superior to him.

R12 Like who?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 10, 2019 1:44 PM |
He made a handful of good films - specifically Wedding Banquet, Sense & Sensibility, , Crouching Tiger, Brokeback, and especially Eat Drink Man Woman.
But his other films are a chore to sit through.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 10, 2019 1:54 PM |
Brokeback Mountain was good because of Heath and his own repressed homosexuality. The rest of the movie was laughable.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 10, 2019 1:58 PM |
Oh David Benioff, the crappy writer of Game of Thrones, is one of the screenwriters here. MEH!
Ang Lee is a great director. But when he gets bogged down with special effects, he loses his heart. But even being saddled with all stupid gimmicks, his Life of Pi was still phenomenal!

Saw Gemini Man yesterday and thought it was pretty good.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 14, 2019 11:23 AM |
There was nothing about the trailer that enticed me to see this film. So there's a younger clone of Will Smith? I don't care. Weirdly, it's meant to be ground-breaking but doesn't feel like it at all. Apparently there's one amazing action sequence in the film but the rest is just average. Will Smith is not box office dynamite, hasn't been for a long time, and having two of him isn't going to make it twice as compelling.

And then r20 died.

[quote]After a 22-year incubation period — enough time that, had the filmmakers known how long it would take, they could have shot the clone scenes in 1997 and then cast the same actor to play the older character two decades later — “Gemini Man” is a case in which an awful lot of effort has gone into making an awfully lazy action movie.
LOL ouch

R25 way harsh, Tai.

To think this film comes from the man who made The Ice Storm, Brokeback Mountain, Eat Drink Man Woman and Sense and Sensibility... sad. I feel like his films lack heart, they feel so empty. Hopefully he'll return to his roots.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 21, 2019 3:03 PM |
I saw the film and sad to say the technology is not quite there yet. Younger Smith looked especially creepy during the daytime scenes, and barely passable during the action moments.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 21, 2019 3:25 PM |
Why oh why, would they spend that kind of money on a movie from a director who has been inconsistent in the last few years? And WIll Smith? Granted Aladdin did really well but otherwise, his years of boxoffice are in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 21, 2019 3:38 PM |
I think the missed abortions that are Jaden and Willow Smith make Will Smith so repellent - along with Scientology of course.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 22, 2019 11:08 PM |
That Smith family was voted once again the most tacky untalented fug family in the USA
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 24, 2019 7:08 AM |

Both Ang Lee and Will Smith deserve this huge flop.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 26, 2019 12:12 PM |
I'm just watching this and my god what a mess. Stupid plotting and terrible writing. SUPER flat and amateurish cinematography. The film screams all-digital in the worst way possible. Why is shooting digitally so hard for some Hollywood pros? This does not look like a $140M film. And I'm not even mentioning the creepy uncanny valley effect.
Oh Ang Lee, where did it all go so wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 24, 2020 6:51 AM |
I just finished watching it, last half by fast-forwarding, and the plot was so predictable EVERYTHING I thought would happen did. *sigh*
