I saw a preview of zewelleger as garland.....suckd so bad...

In the late 50s she cleaned up her act (drugs etc) for a little while living in London- and obviously ate herself a lot of food. I think somewhere in this period and toward the end she ended up in the hospital with alcoholic hepatitis- if I remember my bio info. She recovered and was losing weight by the time of great concert successes in the early 60s before the TV show. By the time of the TV show she was almost too thin and from there on to the end she became more and more frail as her substance abuse spiraled even more out of control. By the time of the London gig and Micky Deans (who was gay- my best friend dated him in the mid 70s) she could barely walk 50 feet without stumbling and could barely finish as sentence- more luck with a song. This is why I am kind of off the new film with Rene Z playing Judy. She was a major burned out, frail, and psychologically shot woman. She was hysterically abusive of almost everyone, estranged from her children (they were living with Sid) and of course broke- in debt. Even so, every now and then she could perch on a stool and summon some of the old magic with her now totally shot voice.. She was completely incapable of doing an entire concert. And she looks like she was 86, not 46. I think the Rene Z film sounds like fantasy.

She had more talent than any jerk-off (myself included) contributing to this stupid, nasty discussion.

Judy was one of the most talented singers ever. She also had a lot of pain and struggle throughout her life. Despite that, she had a good heart, which is hard to encounter in Hollywood. At a time when gay people were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.

I agree with you R12. R13, if you read the good bios that have been written about her- yes she was a loving woman (her children all clearly loved and love her) and God knows she was one of the most talented human beings ever. She was funny as hell too. But she was hell on wheels due to her terrible substance abuse problems that marred her life. She wore out everyone she knew including her children who finally had to be taken away from her because she could not feed, cloth and shelter them. Despite all, they each love her. Lorna's tales in her book on addition are almost not to be believed. Even the funny ones are not so funny when you realize one of the greatest entertainers ever and her children were often homeless.

But I'm with you in general. Her talent and her work in film, TV and recorded record is phenomenal. Her voice was a miracle. But the end of her life was harrowing and I do not get the impression at all from the new film that it is portrayed as such. Her life contains a powerful cautionary tale of the ravages of substance abuse.

I'd seen that picture of her at R2 before. What the hell was WRONG with her? Of course she's fat, but then there's that makeup; those false eyelashes and those drag queen eyebrows. She looked so bad. I wouldn't have wanted to be seen in public like that.
