The reason why people aren't adopting from Eastern European countries as much now is due to the fact that abandoned infants and children there are often from backgrounds of abuse or serious mental illness. Many born from parents with substance abuse or mental health histories, and while sometimes these neurobehavioral and neurocognitive disorders can be seen during infancy, many are not and do not show symptoms until late childhood or early teens. Russia as a terrible problem with their orphanages, they're understaffed and the children there are not having their emotional need met, as a result the older ones when they get adopted at say, 6-7 years old, they're already too far gone as far as the crucial stages of development go. I was seriously looking into adopting these past 2-3 years and from my research and also talking to adoption experts, this is what they're saying.

Contrast that with adopting children from Southeast Asia or Asia, countries like Vietnam where the orphan children are mostly true orphans or children given up for adoption because their parents are too poor. The orphanages there are also night and day compared to Russian ones, the Vietnamese orphanages are run like a household with "aunties and grannies" who care for these children and love them like they're family. So even though these orphanages are not swimming in luxury, the children there are loved and develop emotional, cognitive skills that make transitioning to being adopted and bonding with adoptive parents much easier than emotionally stunted Russian orphans.

One of my former colleague, another gay man who's been married to his partner for over 15 years, they had adopted 2 brothers from Vietnam ages 5 and 7 when they got here. Both didn't understand a word of English but both were so well-adjusted that within 3 years they were both top students and excelled at different hobbies. They still got letters from their caretakers in Vietnam, such was the kindness and love they'd received at the orphanages there.

They actually did Natalia a favor by having her declared an adult, which was the truth anyways judging from medical evidence. I think the truth was that Natalia was indeed from the Ukraine. She had her birth certificate forged to appear years younger than true age because unscrupulous Ukrainian adoption agency wanted to pawn off another medically-/ mentally-ill patient to unsuspecting American couple (the first couple who adopted Natalia). Natalia's condition made it easy to pull off the stunt and she must have been instructed by them to act younger than she really was. Natalia mental health disorders that became evident later on to the first couple who then surrendered her. Do-gooder local adoption folks then made Natalia a priority for emergency adoption, due to Natalia telling sob story to make herself the victim. Natalia was in reality a teenager at least 18 or actual adult over 18, and she played along and grifted to act like a child until when she couldn't anymore because she's not intelligent enough to fully carry it out on a continuous basis. Her disordered personality allows her to play the child card to get into good graces with a family. But she's not intelligent enough to pull it off consistently and so people start becoming suspicious, such as when hidden evidence of menstruation and having pubic hair. Once the truth is discovered, then she becomes her true disordered, sociopathic self. The fault with the second adoptive parents came when they didn't notify the agency and instead continued to be her parents, thinking that she was a teen and not a fully grown adult. They should've just sent her back like the first adoptive parents.

The articles I’ve read say the parents moved to Canada because their son was studying at a university there and he was too young to be alone. They also state (or strongly imply, I haven’t gone back to confirm) that a year’s rent on the apartment was paid by the parents and they assisted her in the process of qualifying and claiming benefits as an adult.

One possibility is that she was a few years older than the original claim and the parents worked really hard to convince themselves she was an adult. The age guesstimate of 22 seems like what you would pick if you didn’t want to go too far, but also didn’t want to leave any wiggle room for the minor/adult designation.

I think some of the details in the story are one off events, or incidents witnessed by very few people that the mom is now circulating to defend herself. Which is understandable, but I’m not assuming they are 100% factual. She tried to push the adoptive mother into an electrified fence? What does that mean? Like a cattle fence? So the three foot tall severely handicapped girl/woman did what, exactly? She told A nurse she was at least 18? Ever tried to get a straight answer out of a child when they aren’t completely sure? Also, only the adoptive mom and maybe the dad would have been able to confirm the secondary sexual characteristics and menstruation at age six.

I don’t see how anyone can be sure of one side or the other at this point. I hope the rest of this story comes out and the Lifetime movie is good. If you look at the court records, the girl didn't stay in the apartment for more than 4-5 months before she stopped paying rent and was evicted. The family that took her in did so back in 2013 so she wasn't alone that long. When this broke out, I thought the girl was really an adult. There were certain details of the story told by the mother that seemed plausible to me - and they were so subtle as to be delightful. But certain elements of the narrative are too overblown to be believable. At this point I think my preferred theory is that she was not an adult but several years older than the adoption agency claimed. For a child to be so deep in the throes of puberty at 6 is not that likely, so maybe 10 or 11 so would be more plausible. Then three years later when she was kicked out, she would be a teenager and a little more capable of taking care of herself than a younger child. The birth cerificate could have been forged to pass her off as younger and therefore more adoptable as I think someone suggested. So she could be somewhat older than they were told she was, without having been a fully grown woman at the time. As for her being a psychopath, I always hear about Russian orphans suffering from RAD, which messes them up so much it can resemble sociopathy. Perhaps this is not common in Ukraine as well? On the other hand, the mom seems BATSHIT, so who knows what parts of that are true.

I told my sister about this story. She had not heard of it. She works in child protective services and said, “ask me how surprised I am.”

She said that there are married couples with savior complexes who habitually seek out and adopt “broken” children, and then dump them when the troubled children turn out to be troubled, which can include violent behaviors. She said that the parents have another child who is autistic is a clear signal that this couple did this, and another signal is that they adopted a child from an illegitimate adoption service that claimed she is Ukrainian when she may not be. She said she doesn’t buy at all that no one can tell whether the adopted child is a child or an adult because that can be determined by blood tests alone.

She said that her office gets two or three couples per year who try to return children they bought through illegal adoption services because they can’t handle them. Her office tells them too bad—this is not a kennel, your child is not a dog, and you have to take care of your kid until she is 18 years old...and we will be watching to make sure you do.

Her verdict is that the girl is a girl, whether Ukrainian or not, the parents are mentally ill and compulsively attention seeking, and that the media including Dr. Phil who have shown the girl’s photo and publicized her are participating in child abuse and exploitation.

People with "failed adoptions" (adopter's remorse) and people who cannot take care of their biological offspring can normally surrender their children to the state. They give up all parental rights and responsibilities and the kids are put into foster care and are now candidates for adoption.

It's probably a dreadful experience for the children who are old enough to understand they've been rejected in this way. But being raised with people who don't love you and resent your presence is a terrible fate too.

Telling people "you have to take care of your kid until she is 18 years old...and we will be watching to make sure you do" won't magically transform shitty parents into good, loving parents. Putting surrendered kids into good homes, or at least safe ones is part of her job.
