Do You Think Penny Marshall And Carrie Fisher Were Lovers?

Any good scoop?

The real-life Shirley to the late Penny Marshall’s Laverne was, in fact, none other than Carrie Fisher. And, true to form, both late icons did friendship — how else? — their way. "I want to thank Carrie Fisher, my friend and partner in crime for more than 30 years," Marshall, who died on December 17 at age 75 from diabetes complications, wrote in her 2012 memoir, My Mother Was Nuts. "We’ve lasted longer than all of our marriages combined. Our crazy lives have meshed perfectly. We’ve always said it’s because we never liked the same drugs or men, but I know there’s more to it."

Indeed, there was more to it. The force of friendship was instantly strong between the women, even as soon as when they first met in the late 1970s via Fisher's then-husband Paul Simon and Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. Both men had no doubts that the stars would hit it off — and they were correct.

One sign of their enduring bond: The first woman to direct a $100 million film (1988's Big, starring Tom Hanks) even became like a second mother to Fisher's daughter, American Horror Story's Billie Lourd, who shared a photo of her late mother with Marshall via Instagram on December 18, the day after Marshall passed.

The pair even celebrated their birthdays like family. Up until Fisher died unexpectedly in December 2016 after suffering a heart attack during an international flight from London, the two women also carried out a yearly tradition of hosting joint October birthday parties. Among the fetes’ A-list guests: everyone from longtime pals Jack Nicholson, Anjelica Huston and Robin Williams to new friends like Ben Affleck and Nicole Kidman.

"We alternated between our homes," Marshall also recalled in her book. "No invitations went out; everyone received a phone call telling them the date and time. A few days later, we would receive calls from people asking if they could come."

The A League of Their Own director remembered one particular year where David Bowie and Iman "crashed" their birthday bash, citing the fried chicken, meatloaf, mac and cheese, and “other Southern staples” made by Fisher's housekeeper Gloria and her late mother Debbie Reynolds' housekeeper, Mary, as the party's big draw. Marshall even noted that Barbra Streisand herself later wanted to hire Gloria and Mary for a party, but "Carrie wouldn’t let her."

Continued the Laverne and Shirley star: “They were like the Vanity Fair party after the Oscars. It was too much — and too expensive. When you see Shaquille O’Neal and Salman Rushdie waiting for their cars at the end of your driveway, you know things are out of control.”

Either way, Marshall and Fisher’s out-of-this-world friendship will surely stand the tests of time — even if only in a galaxy far, far away.

Carrie's friendships lasted a hell of a long longer than her marriages or affairs, so I say "friends".

by Anonymousreply 2September 23, 2019 6:17 AM

Fisher was messed up beyond belief...

Ya I was going to say that Carrie would have messed up a romantic relationship so it was most likely a friendship.

I also don’t think Carrie would have kept her bisexuality a secret in later life. She would have written a book or two and used it to humorous effect on talk shows. As she said herself she looked like Elton John for the last decade of her life so she had nothing to lose by being in a relationship with a woman.

R3 thanks for the read.

Great article - this is the reason I come to Data Lounge

by Anonymousreply 6October 31, 2019 6:17 AM

Indeed. Great article. At this time of year so many celebrity bios flood the market I can’t keep up and I missed this.

by Anonymousreply 7October 31, 2019 6:55 AM

I get a bi vibe

by Anonymousreply 8October 31, 2019 10:55 AM

More please. I know we have a lot of Carrie threads, but I miss this bitch so much, I never get enough. Mary! Yeah, whatever.

My vibe is that Penny and Carrie did some fooling around from time to time, depending on how wasted, or simply up for it they were, at least early on. They probably didn't make a big deal out of it. Just a fun romp here and there.

Did anyone here read the book in the article that r3 linked?

by Anonymousreply 9October 31, 2019 11:39 AM

They, and their parties, sounded like so much damn fun. I love people like that and they're in short supply. I don't know or care, really, if they were lovers but I miss them both.

by Anonymousreply 10October 31, 2019 11:46 AM

I'm an idiot (nothing new) The book doesn't come out until November 12th. I hope it measures up to the excerpt. As mentioned earlier, that was quite a read.

They sounded like they were best friends bordering on sisters. I watched the Carrie Fisher doc about her relationship with her mother and it seems like Carrie is a great friend. She was incredibly famous and accomplished but still had friends she rolled with from high school. I believe it mentioned that she and Griffin Dunne has been friends since third grade. In a fickle place like LA, she seemed like a genuinely decent, nice person. Her death was one of the saddest in 2016.

by Anonymousreply 13October 31, 2019 2:22 PM

She had a good heart

by Anonymousreply 14October 31, 2019 4:04 PM

I think she was bisexual and yes, an enduring relationship. Mom Debs was also more inclined to women. She sure liked douchey men in the beginning tho. Simon, Ford...

by Anonymousreply 15October 31, 2019 4:13 PM

I miss Carrie

by Anonymousreply 16October 31, 2019 4:14 PM

R16 me too.

by Anonymousreply 17October 31, 2019 11:30 PM

They gnawed on each other's gashes!

by Anonymousreply 18October 31, 2019 11:52 PM

When FIsher's name comes up it's often connected with what a strong woman she was. She wasn't. She was scared, terrified, etc., or she wouldn't have turned to drugs often and repeatedly. The pain, the trauma that initiated all of this was probably never really dealt with -- instead she various drugs, was given shock treatments, which delete those memories as part of their supposed therapeutic value.

I have a feeling that she was under a TON of pressure from Reynolds early on -- to present a 'normal' family -- that everything's okay. That was always Debbie's way. You have a problem but you just push through it. The old 'show biz trouper trope'.

But Fisher needed more. More than her mother could admit to or allow herself to admit to.

by Anonymousreply 19November 1, 2019 12:44 AM

I agree for the most part R19. I think she was thrust into the business that she never, ever wanted to be in. But after lucking into Star Wars, she was trapped...

by Anonymousreply 20November 1, 2019 12:48 AM

drug buddies.

by Anonymousreply 21November 1, 2019 12:54 AM

R15 yup. From 1994, years before 'Wishful Drinking'.

Does anyone here actually have friends? Two celebs hanging out of course have to be lovers.

by Anonymousreply 23November 1, 2019 1:09 AM

Read an advance copy; it's a very good book and there's nothing in it that warrants Billie Lourd or Fisher's ex-husband being upset. It misses out on several opportunities to expand upon the known stories and occasionally repeats things almost verbatim from existing articles. One gets the feeling the author just spoke to a few select people and did no real digging. (Several films Fisher was in go unmentioned which seems odd as, whether they were bombs or not, their production took up chunks of her life. Their omission implies the writer didn't do all her homework.) What's there is good and, if you're not familiar with Fisher's life story, it's a good recap, offering occasional insight but not always as much as one might want. I'd give it 8 prolapsed Datalounge anuses out of ten. (The ARC has a lot of typos; I hope the publisher has taken care to get those corrected prior to publication date.)

She was bipolar. She had a mental illness that wasn't taken properly care of. She has also admitted to there being some trauma over Eddie Fisher not being present in her life while growing up. But the mental illness combined with years of constant recreational drug taking did a number on her. Bipolar disorder can be difficult to manage at times when the medication does work. (Margot Kidder had it under control for years, even leaving Hollywood, and still wound up committing suicide.) Imagine not having it AND using cocaine, mescaline and who knows what else on top of it. In the documentary, she admitted to drinking Coca Cola pretty much every day all day long. All that caffeine just wires the nerves! She did not practice healthy living to put it lightly.

[quote]I have a feeling that she was under a TON of pressure from Reynolds early on -- to present a 'normal' family -- that everything's okay. That was always Debbie's way. You have a problem but you just push through it. The old 'show biz trouper trope'.

According to Carrie, Debbie tried to get her as much help as possible, but study and treatments for bipolar disorder weren't as well known in the 70's and 80's as they are now. But Debbie loved Carrie and took care of her . Billie has said that Debbie really was the rock that they all clung to for years.

by Anonymousreply 25November 1, 2019 1:50 AM

Fisher's spawn Billie Lourd has gay voice and pings.

by Anonymousreply 26November 1, 2019 2:48 AM

"She was scared, terrified, etc., or she wouldn't have turned to drugs often and repeatedly."

I don't think that everyone who uses drugs does so out of pain. Some people just like drugs!

And Carrie was bipolar, which is a big risk factor. When people with bipolar disorder are up then EVERYTHING seems like a good idea! Including dangerous substances and unwise sex! And of course when the crash comes, then yes, there's a temporary need to blot out reality by any means possible.

by Anonymousreply 27November 1, 2019 6:01 AM

R25, one doesn't just become bipolar for no reason. It's not just a chemical imbalance...it manifests for a reason or reasons.

And yes, Debbie did try as hard as she knew how to to help her daughter, but not until quite late in her life, maybe 10-12 years before she passed. She did the best she could, but it was up to Carrie to face her demons. She may have tried desperately, but it's also VERY clear that she ran from them just as hard...

Oh, and R27, you're an idiot. One who NEEDS to use drugs is an addict. They don't do so just because they like them. Sheesh...

by Anonymousreply 28November 1, 2019 6:02 AM

You can't cover up your ignorance about mental illness or childish understanding of addiction with non sequiturs and platitudes R28. There is no 100 % effective treatment for any mental illness. There is barely a standard for diagnosis. No doubt Carrie was Bipolar. She would have sought out the best treatment and more than one opinion. And she seemed relieved and amused to label herself as such. Make no mistake, there are signs. She also enjoyed drugs. Always. And not everyone who does drugs is an addict. And many people with mental illness less severe self medicate with drugs and alcohol. But sometimes it's just fun and social. Lots of people feel the need for that. Carrie Fisher did too.

No one NEEDS anything but a bit of food and water. We enjoy, desire, overindulge and crave many other things. It's not all addictive. Drugs are fun. Until they're not. Don't underestimate how enjoyable drugs and sex are just because they're not a part of your life R28. Carrie Fisher died on time. Her illness nor her addiction were going to get better. She felt and looked old and hated that she did. She could no longer make significant changes. She underwent a lot of surgeries to make more money for herself and keep up an image. She did what she wanted, for the most part. Drugs. For fun and pleasure and escape. She didn't need them. She wanted them. And people do become bipolar for just no reason. What reason do you think there is?

by Anonymousreply 29November 1, 2019 6:23 AM

Thanks R29. That was funny.

by Anonymousreply 30November 1, 2019 6:33 AM

Everyone talks about Debbie's impact on Carrie's life (including Carrie) but Eddie Fisher had to have had a negative impact on her, too.

His departure, for sure. His weirdness in general. I wondered if Eddie molested her - she talks about him with a very arm's length distancing.

I worked with both of them on a music video PSA for charity. I did hair and makeup for Carrie Fischer and other actor & musicians. Penny Marshall was the Director. They were definitely just friends who took care of their close circle of Jewish friends. Penny was really nice and very professional. Carrie was as mess. When she entered the set I was told that I had my work cut out for me because she looked like the walking dead. It was true. She had a can of soda with alcohol in it and I was told she was on a chemical diet(pills) to lose weight for an upcoming Jenny Craig commercial that she hadn’t lost the required weight for yet. I thought she was gonna fall out of the makeup chair. But I got it done and it all worked out. Carrie was really a mess. Penny just looked out for as any good friend would have. I was also told on set that first day that Penny was battling cancer which she survived for quite some time after.

They bumped bacon strips.

by Anonymousreply 33November 2, 2019 4:28 AM

R32 thank you for sharing a very interesting tidbit about your encounter.

by Anonymousreply 34November 2, 2019 4:47 AM

R14 are you someone famous?

by Anonymousreply 35November 2, 2019 4:48 AM

They made the furry double vector many a night.

by Anonymousreply 36November 2, 2019 5:25 AM

So she did fuck Ben Affleck. Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 37November 2, 2019 1:01 PM

r32 Penny nor Carrie were Jewish. Penny liked to say "I can pass".

by Anonymousreply 38November 2, 2019 1:19 PM

Carrie was half Jewish, but the wrong half.

You aren't officially Jewish unless you've been raised by a Jewish mother!

by Anonymousreply 39November 2, 2019 9:23 PM

I always envisioned Penny keeping a few South American rent boys on hand.

by Anonymousreply 40November 2, 2019 10:53 PM

MAH EYES ARE PUFFEH!

by Anonymousreply 41November 3, 2019 4:26 AM

Can you imagine letting Penny slurp on your ham and cheese curtains?

by Anonymousreply 42December 15, 2019 2:56 PM

[quote] . I thought she was gonna fall out of the makeup chair.

That made me laugh a lot more than it should have but Carrie really did look so frail and messy in later years that I often wondered what it was like to work with her, because she had to have been a handful.

by Anonymousreply 43December 15, 2019 4:02 PM

She looked awful in her last years. She was only in her 50s but she looked like an elderly woman. Stay away from drugs, kiddies!

by Anonymousreply 44December 15, 2019 4:05 PM

They're lapping at each other's labias in Heaven, Rose.

by Anonymousreply 45December 15, 2019 4:10 PM

I recently rewatched the HBO documentary Bright Star and just found it so sad. Carrie seemed like a good soul who just couldn’t get it together. It must have been heartbreaking to be close to her and see her great qualities but not be able to “save” her. It was hard to watch her clearly off her head on a drug cocktail is some scenes and see her shuffle about like an elderly woman. She was a loyal friend and a great daughter to Debbie (though I’m sure it wasn’t easy dealing with Carrie’s issues) and she seemed to do her best as a mom.

by Anonymousreply 46December 15, 2019 4:12 PM

The parties in the OP's clip sound really bizarre. While I'm sure to many of you all that sounds like heaven, I can't imagine having all those extremely high maintenance people together in one room.

by Anonymousreply 47December 15, 2019 4:21 PM

Agree, R47. Richard Dreyfuss sounds like an insufferable egomaniac who believes he is truly better than everyone else. Suggesting it is simple to change the date of her 60th birthday party to accommodate HIS schedule!
