How did you find Datalounge?

I know we've probably done this a million times, but it always fascinates me to learn what someone was Googling to lead them here.

Me, I was Googling something about the Daytime Emmys and ended up here.

by Anonymousreply 191September 24, 2019 3:51 PM

I was Googling Benedict Cumberbatch in 2012.

I took the wrong fork in the road on my way to iVillage.

by Anonymousreply 2September 19, 2019 11:42 PM

I can't remember. I may have put "celebrity gossip" into Yahoo. I found Datalounge in 2001.

by Anonymousreply 3September 19, 2019 11:43 PM

I did a Yahoo search for "gay gossip" in the fall of 2000.

I remain.

by Anonymousreply 4September 19, 2019 11:45 PM

2015 I think. I Googled something and a DL thread was in the search results. I forgot what the topic was that I Googled. I'm not into celebrity gossip so it wasn't that.

Late '00s while googling "Anderson Cooper gay".

"Danny Thomas glass table"

by Anonymousreply 9September 19, 2019 11:47 PM

It was either something about the Golden Girls or something about Joan Jett. I remember reading long threads about both that same evening. I was in college and very lonely and isolated so I spent a lot of time watching old tv, listening to music and messing about on Google.

by Anonymousreply 10September 19, 2019 11:47 PM

A friend told me about it. I think the unspoken subtext was: "you're bitchy, have too much time on your hands, know too much about ridiculous things so you'd fit right in"

by Anonymousreply 11September 19, 2019 11:48 PM

Is it any wonder that I, a gay man, was googling "celebrities with vaginal odor" and ended up here?

by Anonymousreply 12September 19, 2019 11:48 PM

I wandered in here from the old Atkol forums in 2002.

Looking for Broadway gossip in fall 2006. Back then there were credible Broadway insiders who'd dish, but they're all long gone. I wonder if they get their gossip out in private FB groups now or what? Everyone was obsessed with Raul Esparzas' sandal wearing feet back then. I was technically around for the "Julianne Moore...seriously" threads but like didn't pay attention for a few weeks and by the time I asked what the JMS thing was, the response was basically "you had to be there."

by Anonymousreply 16September 19, 2019 11:56 PM

Don't remember the year, but Datalounge was referenced on Defamer and Gawker in the early era of their existence. I fell in love hard and fast!

by Anonymousreply 17September 19, 2019 11:58 PM

Probably 2010-ish. I was googling some old B-movie star I thought was sexy; it could have been Ralph Meeker or Lawrence Tierney, but I'm not sure. For a while, I visited DL often, but only from google searches. Then, I started stopping by every day. Then, the imdb forums disappeared, and the visits to DL got longer and longer and longer ...

by Anonymousreply 18September 19, 2019 11:59 PM

Datalounge might have been referenced in one of the comments on either site, now that I think about it a little.

by Anonymousreply 19September 20, 2019 12:00 AM

Breadcrumbs.

by Anonymousreply 20September 20, 2019 12:01 AM

It was only a few years ago I typed ”Ronaldo gay" on google. It was the period he was spending a lot of time with that Moroccan kick boxer, Badr Hari. I was really convinced he would come out as a mega-major gay athlete but instead the rumor fade completely with the rape allegations… Anyway became addicted ever since and read/write on DL everynight, like being cosy with friends.

I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar.

by Anonymousreply 22September 20, 2019 12:03 AM

R13, I wandered over from Atkol, too! I couldn't tell anyone when, though. I'm terrible with dates. It took me a long time to work up the nerve to actually post.

by Anonymousreply 23September 20, 2019 12:06 AM

I heard a racket outside my house one night and I grabbed a flashlight and opened the door. There, rooting through an overturned trash can, was the datalounge, looking on the verge of starvation. It turned and looked at me, its eyes reflecting the glare of my flashlight, and let out an unworldly hiss.

Eventually I was able to lure it into my home by playing the soundtrack to “Meet Me in St Louis.” It perched on my couch, drinking a cosmo I had mixed for it, and told me it relied on the kindness of the homosexual community for its livelihood, and that is why it was rooting through garbage cans. But only the *really good* garbage cans.

by Anonymousreply 24September 20, 2019 12:08 AM

In my day, Datalounge weren't nothin' more than a bunch of black courier font letters on a white screen. And ya had to hit refresh anytime you wanted to see somethin' new. And it was confusin' as H-E-double-hockey-sticks 'cause everyone were named "Anonymous." And we liked it that way. We liked it.

I was trying to find out information on my favorite porn star. Kind of got interested in this, and would visit the site occasionally. In the past few weeks, got more interested, and actually opened an account. I have screwed up somehow, because my posts to threads do not show up on my view of the post, but wind up in my ignore box. I think I somehow ignored myself, or is this normal?

by Anonymousreply 29September 20, 2019 12:26 AM

r29 Yes, you ignored yourself. Clear the entire ignore list by clicking on the little crosses on the right side of the ignore list. Refresh the page and see if it helps.

by Anonymousreply 30September 20, 2019 12:29 AM

Naturally I saw an ad that was the product of one of their awesome marketing campaigns.

Thankfully the powers that be at datalounge know how to target their prospective consumers with online ads and maximize the money people spend on subscriptions to keep a site that runs smoothly.

by Anonymousreply 31September 20, 2019 12:39 AM

It was referenced on FameTracker - remember that?!

by Anonymousreply 32September 20, 2019 12:43 AM

I think I was, innocently enough, googling for info about Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Imagine my surprise when I got here!

I once frequently visited a website called Rate-A-Rod and they asked the guys who submitted pictures of their dicks other questions like what state they were in, their age, and also their favorite websites.

One guy with a particularly noteworthy rod said his favorite website was something called “Datalounge,” so I checked it out. This was the summer before 9-11. Been here ever since..

by Anonymousreply 47September 20, 2019 1:34 AM

Completely random, but in 2003 I was talking with a neighbor. In passing, he mentioned Datalounge and that it was a gay gossip site. I had no idea what he was talking about since I had never heard of DL. I went home that night, and if I recall, I probably Googled DL. I have been more or less been addicted since. I have since lost track of my neighbor, but DL has remained constant.

by Anonymousreply 48September 20, 2019 1:41 AM

Googled something about Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. It was vicious, but hilarious and accurate. No wonder they hate this site.

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2019 2:01 AM

Fucking somehow I ended up on Let’s Be Victorian Era Datalounge. God knows how I got there. But I was with my mom in the hospital where she was not doing well and, god damn, did it make me laugh hard. I needed it. And now I can’t quit you DL. I’ve stuck with you, old girl, through the ups and downs. When there is a truly innovative and funny thread, it makes me laugh. And I still marvel at the ability of some R1s to nail it shut within minutes.

Back when Wonkette was relatively new (and actually written by Ana Marie Cox), I saw Datalounge either mentioned or quoted, and I was off to the races. I believe that was 2004.

The Absolutely True Story of How I Found the Datalounge

I was seriously ill several years ago and spent a lot of time in bed. I got bored and decided I would like to read some unhinged rants. So, I started typing hateful things into Google. It kept bringing me here. I read about half a dozen threads. I thought this site seemed interesting, so I went to the home page. That’s when I found out it’s a gay site. I’ve coming here ever since.

by Anonymousreply 71September 20, 2019 2:25 AM

I came for the gossip.

I stayed for the collaborative threads and the cast of characters....like _mpy and Miss Ehrenstein

by Anonymousreply 72September 20, 2019 2:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 73September 20, 2019 2:36 AM

A friend of mine who was one of the originals told me about a thread on Judging Amy as he knew I watched that show. That was around 2005 maybe.

by Anonymousreply 74September 20, 2019 2:38 AM

Found it when looking for information about the D.C. murder case of Robert Wone. There was surprisingly good analysis and details that didn't make it into mainstream papers outside of D.C. metro area.

The guys who killed him are the worst kind of scum and deserve to die in a grease fire. .

by Anonymousreply 75September 20, 2019 2:39 AM

I don’t remember exactly but i think it was in the comments section of Towerroad (which i don’t read anymore) but it wasn’t about celebrity gossip in was something about politics. Late 90 ‘s, i loved reading but couldn’t post because of the peak periods. So every once in a while i’d check in and see what’s going on and then at some point i was able to post and then became a paying member about 10 years ago.

When i was unemployed i was on it all day, procrastinating my job hunting. Finally got a job and so i’m not on it so much. Thing is my husband hates this site, he finds its pointless bitchery, well pointless. However, i do share some of the better threads with him and he does admit it does have its moment.

Also, i love the obscure pop references and have been turned on to many wonderful movies, tv shows, music that i would never have found without DL.

What i hate the most though is the constant Instram ho’s that someone post every hour. Who cares about some steroided out straight narcissistic guy

by Anonymousreply 76September 20, 2019 2:44 AM

I found its lack of faith disturbing.

Jon Stewart was talking about DL on his TV show, so I Googled it and found you.

by Anonymousreply 83September 20, 2019 3:29 AM

Which actor might I suddenly have become interested in during the spring of 2013? I know it was in 2013. I googled something, probably "(actor name) gay" and it brought me here. OTOH, it may have been the Robert Wone story. I just don't remember. But it was 2013.

by Anonymousreply 84September 20, 2019 4:25 AM

A friend told me about it in 2004. I lurked for a year or so. The first thread I remember was about rejected toy ideas, including “Lil’ Teri Schiavo - with removable feeding tube”.

by Anonymousreply 85September 20, 2019 4:49 AM

I googled myself... I was so pissed off after reading that thread, I never came back here.

Then one day I googled "Did Brad Kalvo get fat?" and there was a huge thread on that here & now I am addicted to this site. During this 2nd time with DL, I was more able to see the (limited) level of thinking that some of the posters here are capable of, so I got over what was in the original thread about me. Even the title of the thread made no sense.

by Anonymousreply 86September 20, 2019 4:57 AM

I was on a message board and someone linked the story of Gayle Grinds that was posted here. She was the lady that was so fat she fused to her couch.

by Anonymousreply 87September 20, 2019 4:58 AM

March 2014, googled overlooked, underappreciated films. Datalounge was the second or third link. DL was so much better back then, more intelligence and wit, less anger and ignorance. But it still has its moments. And these VERY comfy couches make it tough to get up and leave.

by Anonymousreply 88September 20, 2019 5:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 91September 20, 2019 6:14 AM

I was googling Robert Downey Jr, looking to see if anyone else found him to be a tiresome, insufferable, cunt and voila!

by Anonymousreply 92September 20, 2019 6:32 AM

posters above mentioned Michael Musto, and that might have been my source, but…

I think it was a couple of (not complementary lol) mentions in Liz Smith’ column that got me here.

I think it was also Liz Smith’s column that led me to Wendy Williams on the radio. God, I miss that funny old broad...

by Anonymousreply 93September 20, 2019 6:34 AM

I was googling Judy Live at Carnegie Hall because I’m obsessed with the album and just wanted to read everything I could find.

Then...Suddenly! A DL thread came up with the most wonderful title:

“Judy at Carnegie Hall — Let’s Discuss It’s Greatness”

So I’ve been happily hooked to DL since.

And I have to say, the second thread that bound me forever was

I’m Beth Jarrett...

Absolutely sent me into orbit.

by Anonymousreply 94September 20, 2019 6:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 102September 20, 2019 10:53 AM

by Anonymousreply 103September 20, 2019 10:57 AM

Somebody over at reddit told me I would be torn to shreds for my lack of class and sophistication

So of course I had to check it out. Its a nicer community than I'd anticipated. I started off set to asbestos eyeballs and havent felt the need to change that

by Anonymousreply 104September 20, 2019 11:45 AM

Heard about it on the Usenet gossip groups in the 1990s from someone named Sher but I avoided DL for a long time because of the creepy JTT stalker. Honestly don't remember why I started coming here regularly but it was probably 2004 or so.

by Anonymousreply 105September 20, 2019 11:55 AM

I'd been paying attention to MetaFilter since 2002; was getting fed up with it being more and more taken over and run by intolerant, hysterical absolutists; someone there asked about other online communities that weren't so heavily moderated; and someone mentioned this place.

That must have been about 2010. I've since dropped by while in California, China, Kenya, Lebanon and Qatar.

by Anonymousreply 106September 20, 2019 12:01 PM

Michael Musto mentioned the DL in an article way back in the early part of the century.

In 1995, there was no Google, and I have no idea which gay celebrity I was looking for. Back in those early days of the internet, there were no graphics, and it was all white text on black background. For DataLounge, it was just pages and pages of posts — no threads.

by Anonymousreply 110September 20, 2019 12:25 PM

You know who told me?

Julianne Moore

by Anonymousreply 111September 20, 2019 12:32 PM

I used to visit in the quite early days. In those days it looked like a phone directory. None of the fancy-pantsy stuff you see today.

I think I googled "Playgirl 1970s" and that's how I found it, several times. Where else would they be discussing this at such great length? But I didn't hang around.

Then in 2007 Alan Bates died and there was much revelation about his homosexuality and of course much discussion on here.

It was a Saturday morning and I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. It was the moment of the Diana scream - someone had just posted it. I came on board and never left. Until then I always hated anything "gay" on the internet - there was sites like towlroad which was so depressing. It was all reports on gay bashings in Cleveland and AIDS. Whereas here people wanted to make each other laugh more than anything. People didn't come here to be grim.

Also, back in '07 there was a vast archive. You could look up anything and what was weird, was people used to talk at great length about offbeat things that seemed to interest me....I mean, 75 posts on "An Unmarried Woman"?

To this day I can't believe I fit into some "gay" group the way I have here. I was never Mr. Gaybar or Mr. Fire Island. It's been a revelation.

For me, it was a Michael Musto column in The Voice where he mentioned that some gossip in a Datalounge thread about something that happened in - I think - The Philippines - got picked up by international news. I wish I could find that column.

by Anonymousreply 116September 20, 2019 4:40 PM

Cheryl and I used to work together at a collection agency.

by Anonymousreply 117September 20, 2019 4:50 PM

Google. But I didn't know it was a gay celebrity board at first. Also, that it's mainly frequented by the elderly aka eldergays.

by Anonymousreply 118September 20, 2019 5:01 PM

I'm rather happy that Datalounge is allegedly eldergay-centric. For it it were composed solely of young gaylings, every other thread would be about Ariana Grande or stomach abs. What a fright that would be.

by Anonymousreply 119September 20, 2019 7:43 PM

[quote]Cheryl and I used to work together at a collection agency.

Collection of what, bodily fluids?

by Anonymousreply 120September 20, 2019 7:47 PM

[quote]that it's mainly frequented by the elderly aka eldergays.

Thank God for that.

It used to be much more so and was all the better for it.

by Anonymousreply 121September 20, 2019 7:49 PM

It was right here.

by Anonymousreply 122September 20, 2019 7:50 PM

DL used to make me laugh so hard I'd have tears. About some of the silliest stuff too. I miss that.

by Anonymousreply 123September 20, 2019 7:54 PM

I was big into As the World Turns online fandom back in the late 90s and got here somehow through that.

by Anonymousreply 124September 20, 2019 8:12 PM

That link will take you to an actual page where you can see we have always had fucking moronic right-wing trolls. ------------------------ BUSH IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR PRESIDENT by: anonymous 23 12/11/2000 @ 07:27PM As usual, my post generated a lot of hate speech from the far-left wacko crowd.

In reply:

1. Bush assuming power is not against the will of the people. He won the electoral vote which is how our constitutional process works.

2. Bush is not lying or stealing votes or using his brother (as if he could). Both Bush and Gore are exercising their legal rights under our system of justice. Gore is following legal procedures to contest the vote in Florida. It's not been done in a presidential election in a long, long time. It's bad form in some ways, but it is his right.

On the other side, Bush is using the justice system just as Gore is doing. Bush is using the system to counter Gore's use of it. Both men are within their rights.

2. The country did not do better under Clinton/Gore than under prior Republican administrations. The country did do better over the past eight years because of individual productivity, good sense from Alan Greenspan, and the tax and spending cuts put through in the eighties by the Republican Congress.

3. Bush opposed gay rights. Big deal. Clinton gave us "don't ask don't tell." Clinton gave us the defense of marriage act. As usual, the Democrats talk a great deal, promise even more, but give us nothing. Oh yeah, they do take more and more of our money and our freedoms.

4. People keep saying that Gore won the popular vote. Maybe he did. But, in a lot of states the popular votes were not completely counted. After a winner was declared, absentee ballots were not counted. So, maybe Bush really won. Just as you think Bush is stealing the election, I, am convinced that Gore is stealing it.

5. The Republicans did not illegally fix the absentee ballots. Two courts have so ruled.

6. Bush won the first count in Florida. He won the second. He won the third. Even in Democratic areas, reports indicate that he was still winning the hand count that was stopped this weekend. I think Bush would win any recount, unless the Democrats could hide away as they did in Miami and discern voter intent by fixing the ballots.

7. Bottom line. Bush won under the election laws in effect as of election day. So, Gore wants to rewrite the laws to let him win. It's just as if the losing team in a football game wanted to change the rules to say that an almost touchdown was a touchdown.

8. Bush is president-elect. That is good for all of us. Will he be a good president? Who knows. Time will tell. Unlike Clinton/Gore, however, I know we will not have the criminal fund raising problems, FBI file abuse, selling of our military secrets to Red China, the politics of personal destruction, and complete disregard for the law.

9. Finally, on a lighter note, Bush is cuter and more pleasing to the eye and ear than Gore. Eight years of listening to Gore talk about the evils of the internal combustion engine would do wonders for the liquor industry.

by Anonymousreply 125September 20, 2019 8:14 PM

R121 By now I do appreciate the presence of eldergays. The have some astounding knowledge that’s hard to find elsewhere like the old Hollywood threads.

by Anonymousreply 126September 20, 2019 8:16 PM

Oh yeah, DL has always had right wing trolls. They used to be called Freepers back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 127September 20, 2019 8:17 PM

Bathroom stall. Next to the gloryhole.

Been here since 2000 but have no recollection how I got here. Wait a minute, was I drugged?

by Anonymousreply 128September 20, 2019 8:25 PM

I googled "Austin is overrated" or something and a thread on DL popped up, this was around 2013 I think. I was born and raised in Austin but moved away 15 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 129September 20, 2019 8:30 PM

Late in the year 2000. I was searching for Michael Stipe gossip and was lured to Datalounge. Never disappointed and never leaving here either! I wish I could thank each and every one of you bitches.

by Anonymousreply 130September 20, 2019 8:57 PM

[quote]Oh yeah, DL has always had right wing trolls. They used to be called Freepers back in the day.

A kinder, gentler time. Now "freeper" is used to describe anyone who's not part of the most extreme left (the ones who shriek "there's no such thing as the alt-left"!), in spite of the fact that most of us they call "freeper" have never voted, and will never vote, Republican in our lives.

by Anonymousreply 131September 20, 2019 9:03 PM

Shut up, freeper.

by Anonymousreply 132September 20, 2019 9:06 PM

i was Googling Rose Hanbury and David Rocksavage when I found the DataLounge.

by Anonymousreply 133September 20, 2019 9:06 PM

Through bad luck

by Anonymousreply 134September 20, 2019 9:06 PM

Yeah, there have been people pretending they weren't freepers since 2001 (and before) too, r131.

by Anonymousreply 135September 20, 2019 9:09 PM

Trying to understand why all these young gay kids were going "trans." So many other forums were all, "Rah rah, trans is great! Don't question it!"

Google searches lead me here, where I found an even-handed and nuanced discussion. Or at the very least, no mindless cheerleading.

That, and the snark.

by Anonymousreply 136September 20, 2019 9:22 PM

I'd probably had a few drinks and was ruminating about years gone by. I googled one of the characters from the old alt.showbiz.gossip -- not sure at this point, but it may have been David "Auntie Midge" Migikovsky -- and found myself here. And stayed.

by Anonymousreply 137September 20, 2019 9:23 PM

I was googling why Glenn's career went straight down the shitter and voila! I found Datalounge

by Anonymousreply 138September 20, 2019 9:26 PM

Oh wow, I've never seen anything this early before. 1996!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 139September 20, 2019 9:27 PM

I stumbled upon it because of one of Truvy’s posts back in 1995 or 1996, forgot about it, and rediscovered it in 2013 when the Aaron Rodgers mess hit the news.

by Anonymousreply 140September 20, 2019 9:27 PM

I was looking for a site where demented women could discuss Meghan Markle and google suggested I would fit in here. Thank you, Google!

by Anonymousreply 141September 20, 2019 9:28 PM

R139 Times have changed.....

GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) A national organization advocating for fair, accurate and inclusive portrayals of lesbian, gay and bisexual lives in all forms of the media.

by Anonymousreply 142September 20, 2019 9:33 PM

I was googling crystal meth... Asking for a friend...

by Anonymousreply 143September 20, 2019 9:50 PM

What? Like it’s hard?

by Anonymousreply 144September 20, 2019 10:35 PM

[quote] Oh yeah, DL has always had right wing trolls. They used to be called Freepers back in the day.

They were also sporadic, not constant and incessant.

by Anonymousreply 145September 20, 2019 11:26 PM

I was on another website reading an article about politics and the writer of said article linked to Datalounge. I was taken aback at first by the laser-sharp snark, the uncanny ability of posters to cut through the BS to reveal the real truths, and the intelligence of most posters.

Being here for 15 years has changed me as a person. I’m a little more cynical and shrewd, don’t suffer fools gladly, and better informed on a variety of topics. I’m still kind though ;)

While hanging out on DL, I try to the honor the memory of my friend Tony, who died of AIDS related complications in 1994 at the age of 33. He was the absolute best and I miss him every damn day. A funny, charming, generous man who breathed magic into my life. He would’ve loved you guys.

by Anonymousreply 146September 20, 2019 11:29 PM

I was googling fisting, disco lights, and seedy motels and got here?

by Anonymousreply 147September 21, 2019 1:43 AM

1999. Googled Chris Meloni and Lee Tergesen on Oz, and, what do you know, something on Datalounge came up on the first search page. I entered the "vile pit of trollery" and never looked back!

by Anonymousreply 148September 21, 2019 1:48 AM

I googled my name.

by Anonymousreply 149September 21, 2019 2:24 AM

I was forced into Datalounge quite against my will. I had been happily posting on an Out.com discussion group site when all of us were suddenly informed that it was closing down and that we would be automatically transferred to something called “Datalounge.” Think about it. What does “Datalounge” even mean? Was it a gay forum hiding its real gay name in a closet? Was it a modern-day speak-easy where the password was “shame”?

If so, why would I ever stay in such a online place?

Inertia. And I’ve been here ever since. I suppose I’m now waiting for this site to close down and then to be transferred yet again to some new, cryptically named gay discussion site. I feel rather like that feather in the “Forrest Gump” movie, blown from one gay forum to the next. So to speak.

by Anonymousreply 150September 21, 2019 3:19 AM

When I started posting here, 20 years ago, there were:

Freepers

Flames and Freaks (oh the humanity)

Gossip

Live Posting of awards shows, which was awesome. It still happens, but it isn't like it was back then.

Lots of Soap Talk

Turkey Meatballs

Something about Prancing Ponies. I clicked on one of those threads once, didn't know what the fuck was going on, and never went back.

I remember Shobe and Kirker and Judy Pills.

There really is no other place like it in the message board world.

by Anonymousreply 151September 21, 2019 3:33 AM

[quote] I remember Shobe and Kirker and Judy Pills.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I'll say!

by Anonymousreply 152September 21, 2019 3:39 AM

googled Call Me By Your Name (book) and fell down the rabbit hole

by Anonymousreply 153September 21, 2019 4:05 AM

See, r136 is what I was talking about elsewhere: the anti trans ladies have to go into every thread and proselytize and spam us with their crap.

Dunno what they mean about "snark" because they don't actually participate in our threads in any meaningful or useful way.

by Anonymousreply 154September 21, 2019 4:12 AM

Turned left at Greenland.

by Anonymousreply 155September 21, 2019 4:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 156September 21, 2019 4:44 AM

Google search

by Anonymousreply 157September 21, 2019 4:58 AM

I was googling myself and the rest is history!

by Anonymousreply 158September 21, 2019 5:58 AM

It may seem incredible now, but there was once a time when Kevin Spacey had rabid frau fan girls who insisted he was straight, ‘despite what those idiots at that data lounge say ... ‘

by Anonymousreply 159September 21, 2019 1:48 PM

I came (via Google - 2009-ish?) for gay British celebrity gossip and I stayed for the hilarious bitchery.

Loves it!

by Anonymousreply 160September 21, 2019 1:54 PM

I googled something like "why is my apartment too hot in winter." The thread and the rest of the site were entertaining, and I figured I'd stay, since why not, it's not like I'm one of those hetero frauen.

[quote]It may seem incredible now, but there was once a time when Kevin Spacey had rabid frau fan girls who insisted he was straight, ‘despite what those idiots at that data lounge say ... ‘

It really doesn't seem so incredible now. We still get the frau fangirls on DL, perhaps more than ever. Just replace "Kevin Spacey" with Shawn Mendes or some other current closet case.

by Anonymousreply 162September 21, 2019 3:57 PM

[quote]we have always had fucking moronic right-wing trolls

We're an anonymous board and the demographic skews older, plus we get a lot of actually mentally ill people here who for some reason are fond of saying they're as liberal as the day is long but Vote Trump because immigrants / trans / SJW's / feminists/ assorted libturds. That a big draw for rightwing scum.

by Anonymousreply 163September 22, 2019 2:01 AM

R151 - I still do not know or understand what the "Prancing Ponies" are????

by Anonymousreply 164September 23, 2019 1:28 PM

I think it had something to do with the hobbit actors from Lord of the Rings R164.

by Anonymousreply 165September 23, 2019 3:26 PM

I was looking up celebrity gossip and found you that way. I think it was a Broadway thread so the cattiness and hilarity were off the charts, so I never left.

by Anonymousreply 166September 23, 2019 3:31 PM

The humour kind of reminds me of the old Howard Stern radio show back in the nineties. No matter how dire or sad the topic, people find funny and completely inappropriate things to say about it. Just replace the tits with dicks.

by Anonymousreply 167September 23, 2019 3:35 PM

R64 Yep - via the old Wonkette site when comments about Patti Reagan's fashion choice for The Funeral were linked to datalounge.

I think that might have been the thread when Nancy Reagan's fingers did the casket dance.

I howled and I've been here on and off since then.

by Anonymousreply 168September 23, 2019 3:54 PM

I somehow got to old infomercials on youtube and ended up searching for info on that red-haired Kathy woman who was in a lot of them. Of course, there were a thread on her here and I stumbled into it. I rarely laugh anymore (I know!), and was so happy to get the laughter I did out of the comments. So I lurked for a while. Funny enough, I didn't realize it was a gay-centered until a week or so later. Then decided to sign up. I feel like the site is constantly shifting amongst topics, from politics, to general media, to life lessons, etc.. So my interest in the site ebbs and flows. I generally enjoy the life discussions, as I don't follow Hollywood or politics much. I'm super into the threads about the retail markets and threads on the economy general.

by Anonymousreply 173September 23, 2019 9:54 PM

Dangling tendrils.

by Anonymousreply 174September 23, 2019 11:38 PM

Googled "Is Aldo Ray gay".

by Anonymousreply 175September 24, 2019 12:28 AM

I googled “Is Brady Anderson gay?” so many years ago

by Anonymousreply 176September 24, 2019 1:13 AM

Second star to the right, and straight on till morning.

by Anonymousreply 177September 24, 2019 2:41 AM

I googled something about the American flag being ugly and you were the only bitches petty enough to have also complained about it.

by Anonymousreply 178September 24, 2019 3:03 AM

I adore that so many people were brought together here by their dislike of something or to have their suspicions confirmed that someone/something is gay or ugly (or both).

by Anonymousreply 179September 24, 2019 3:20 AM

I was raped in WeHo in 1997 and looking for a support group. I came here and found found a sloppy but sufficient band of people who could slowly help me to recover and to re assume the tasks of daily living.

by Anonymousreply 183September 24, 2019 4:53 AM

I'm glad this place helped you R180. I lost both parents in the last couple of years and have found a lot of kindness here. There's just the right amount of sweetness, sarcasm and assholery here to get people through the tough times with support and some laughs thrown in.

Yeah.

by Anonymousreply 190September 24, 2019 3:43 PM

i would stumble on this site over the years when googling some obscure celebrity gossip... but thought the site too trashy to revisit. But a year ago, while watching Aretha Franklin's funeral service, there was no commentary on who was arriving, who was related to who,...etc. I wisely ended up on DL ......I've never left.
