Not sure how well known it is, but I was surprised to learn that actor Gary Cooper was good friend with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr. (who was just as handsome as Cooper). In fact, Cooper, staunchly conservative Republican, was friendly with all of the Roosevelts who were progressive Democrats. Any other famous friendships you were surprised to learn or simply share?
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, and Ernest Perron, the gay son of a janitor who worked at Le Rosey, the Swiss boarding school where the then Crown Prince was a student. They became friends when one day Pahlavi came to the defense of Perron, who had always been a victim of gay bashing by other students. Perron introduced his beloved French poetry and philosophy to Pahlavi and later left for Iran to become his courtier. Perron made his presence felt at the court and was disliked by many, including the Queen and the Western diplomats in Teheran, but he maintained his status as the Shah's best friend for a long time. After the Islamic Revolution, Pahlavi and Perron were portrayed as gay lovers by the new regime, which remains the official history in Iran today.
