Is “Just My Imagination” (1971) by The Temptations their best song?
I know their most popular is “Aint Too Proud to Beg” but I always felt that JMI was their best effort. It’s so beautiful and the harmonies were gorgeous!!!
I love when they get to the part of “Every night on my knees I pray...” the vocals are haunting! Beautiful lyrics and vocals.
What would you saw was their best song?

Their most popular is probably “My Girl.” They were a great group. I loved “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.”

I agree "My Girl" is probably their biggest song, followed by "I Can't Get Next To You".

There is also "Papa was a rolling stone" but that has become a kind of vulgar party-favorite for white people. I agree with the OP that "Just my Imagination" is probably their towering achievement. The bridge ("Every night, on my knees I pray...") is pure Gospel, and that anchors the sublime flights of falsetto harmony in true Earth.

"I Wish It Would Rain" is my favorite.

The version I posted at R4 seems a little fast, here's the original.

JMI is my favorite Temps song too, OP. I lived it at the time, that summer it seemed like it was on the radio constantly. I still love everything about it, the little marimba riff at the start, the horns, everything about the arrangement is beautiful. And especially those harmonies, like silk. Eddie Kendricks sang most of it (that falsetto!) but that one line you quote was Paul Williams. He’s the one who had to drop out of the band due to his alcoholism and later committed suicide.
They’re all dead now except Otis, He’s still kicking.

The “Every Night on my knees I pray” almost sounds like he’s in pain while singing it. Haunting.

R10 He was in pain. He was in the throes of alcoholism when they recorded that album and was forced to retire from the group just after the song was released, in the spring of 1971. He killed himself 2 years later.

I’ve always loved this early song of theirs, from 1963 when they were still pretty much unknown. Paul Williams sings lead on it.

The Supremes and the Temptations sing each other's hits on Sullivan.
