A Netflix production set in the 1990s Northern Ireland. A group of people experience the highs and lows of life in a world of armed police and british army checkpoints everywhere. Centred on 5 teens and their families. Extremely funny and thoughtful. Let's discuss.

My vote goes to sister Michael!
Her best moments from the show:

I’m loving it. The English boy is really cute.

R3 I had lost all hope in any DLers watching it🤣 I love him too! Do you think there will be any kind of romantic angle between him and Erin in season 3? Asking because the viewers loved them together in the prom episode.

Love Sister Michael. Also loved the final scene of Series 1, when they skipped from comedy to poignancy in a flash, where with the very slightest of smiles you realise she isn't completely cynical and that for all his sniping, the Erin's granddad loves all his family. Reminded me of the final scene of Blackadder 4 in that respect. Very clever series. Loved it.

R5 It is true - that last scene was very touching. They also did a great job at presenting Northern Ireland of that time - from buses being checked for bombs and armed officers at every square. All of this had become their new regular. An epitome of "life goes on, no matter what"
The grandfather is funny,so are his two daughters. In my more cynical moments I feel bad for Erin's dad ,but I know at the end of the day the show is all fun and games.

[R6] - agree re the portrayal of 90s NI. Interesting how 'the girls' just get on with the business of living and their teenage dramas with the British soldiers in the background and don't much comment on it. Also thought it was very authentic the way that everyone in the working class Catholic neighbourhood knew each others business and were in and out of each other's houses. The Friday night chip supper thing had me laughing as well. It's still a thing where I live - queues out the door on a Friday!

R7 😂😂😂 I quite liked Fiona! And remember when their mum and aunt tied them at her house to stage a burglary after they accidentally set fire to it while cleaning? Good stuff😁 I wish more people watched the show. They are missing out.

Just binged both seasons and it is one of the beat shows I’ve seen this year. I loved it. James is adorable

love it. But also spent summers near there as a kid in the 90s

I loved it - Sister Michael was hilarious. I especially enjoyed her response to the ‘miracle’ of the statue crying.

Sister Michael in this season has been even better than the first. Her delivery and expressions never fail to make me laugh. It's a great show.

It's not Netflix!

Sister Michael steals every scene but Jenny Joyce is a close second. Her off key singing and line delivery never fail to crack me up 😂 !

I loved that part when girls go to shop for their prom dresses and Michelle - who has stolen her mom's card - tells them all to buy good ones & that they can be returned later. Thought that gesture was the perfect mix of cunning, loyal, thoughtful and cunty! Loved it!

I need to get Netflix - love what I’ve seen of the show.

Among other details, the characters' names are perfect.
I attended Catholic school in Boston in the 1980s (Our Lady's), and the school head was actually named Sister Michael.
Our Sister Michael however was a bleary-eyed drunk in her early sixties, much less fun than the one in the show.

Hands down Sister Michael. She could give DL a Master Class in sardonic, cutting wit. You go, Sister Michael!

I tried watching but I couldn't understand a lot of the dialogue due to the strong accents.

Same here. I turned on the subtitles. They all appear to be a wee bit long in the tooth to be playing high school girls though.

Father Pete has great hair! And the constant questioning of his own beliefs is hilarious too. Seriously though, I don't dislike any of the characters, they are all so cool!

Sister Michael for President!

It really is a great show and very funny. I didn't have much trouble with the accents. It's one of those shows that gets even better on repeat viewing and it's laugh-out-loud funny. My partner and I have watched both seasons multiple times. Glad there are some fans on here! I loved the way Season 2 ended. I won't give away any spoilers, but it was very sweet.
I went to Catholic school in the US. We had a Sister Michael, too, but she was a sweet old Irish woman. She and two of her sisters all taught at the school or were involved in it in some way. She loved me. She let me get away with so many things.

I’ve been more about the Sister Michael who was director of my Catholic school. She was a bleary-eyed, red-nosed drunk in her early sixties; I don’t ever remember seeing her smile.
This was in Boston in the 1980s.
Maybe sister Michael was such a drunk because she knew what was going on with the priests sexually abusing children but she couldn’t stop any of it.

This show has one of the best ensemble casts I've seen on television for a long time. Everyone is perfect for their part. And it bears repeat viewing just to watch what the actors are doing in the backgrounds of other characters' scenes. There's so much going on.
It does hit you; being maybe only a couple of years younger than these characters are meant to be, the 90s nostalgia is strong. They live in such a recognisable way, but then there are reminders that they also had The Troubles going on in the background of their teen years. The final scene of series 1 was so moving, especially as The Troubles were portrayed with a sense of black humour until that point.
One of my favourite scenes is when the family is interrogating the grandfather over his new "fancy woman".
"We met at the Stations of the Cross." "Which Station?" "Jesus falls for the second time." "I could do without the details, da'"

Left me cold. All the Northern Irish Catholics come off as dumb slobs.

One of the smartest, funniest shows I’ve found in a long time. Wish there were more episodes.

Third season coming later this year.

I'm waiting for the Ulster Scottish version called Londonderry Girls. Did Lisa McGee(the show creator) ever talk to an Ulster Scot before?! They don't exist in her world!
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 11, 2020 3:48 PM |
There was the episode with all the protestant boys and their minder. Did you miss that episode r33?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 11, 2020 4:10 PM |
Write what you know. its like an Israeli writing about Palestinian life - or vice versa - wouldn’t be right. It’s a very Irish sense of humor. As far as I can tell, Ulster Scots don’t have a sense of humor.

R24 I'm talking about a show about Ulster Scots! Protestant? They are Presbyterian deary NOT Anglican. They do have a sense of humor. They are far more humorous than the humorless commies in the "Shitin Fein".

Does anyone else like to imagine Joe forcing himself on Gerry? Something is going on with those two.

Don’t make me pick. I love this show.

Any idea when Season 3 might come out? Sometime later this year or early next year? Love this show! It holds up on repeat viewings, which is always the sign of a brilliant show.

I also loved when Michelle referred to the B. V. M. as the Big Woman.

OP/R here - Some fans are saying season 3 will come out in early April. I checked and found no credible news article about this claim, I think the first two seasons came out in April 2018 & 19 hence the speculation.

I'm loving this show. Was barely aware of it until I heard my partner snickering about something on the TV one night, and asked him what it was. This is a gem.

R42 Who is your favorite on the show?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 25, 2020 1:14 PM |
I like them all, but I'm particularly fond of Claire.

The nun is basically my sister. This get Irish humor very well. I’m surprised so many like it. My Brazilian boyfriend doesn’t get it.

I wish they would brIng back the cute Protestant boy who was paired up with Erin. He reminded me of gay porn star Kane O’Farrell.

Do we think Michelle is a virgin? Big talkers often are.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 26, 2020 9:14 AM |
Binge watched this series in a couple of days this past summer and loved it. I had difficulty understanding the accents initially, but understood more the next time I watched it. I agree that this is one of the better ensemble performances in recent television history. I cannot pick a favorite, but I think my least favorite character is Erin.
Did anyone see the clips from their appearance on the GBBO? That episode looks amazing.
