Yikes. A Double Feature of Depression.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter was one of the saddest books and movie..... it still effects me very deeply when I watch it.

by Anonymousreply 2September 4, 2019 1:12 PM

Ode to Billy Joe was one of the very first depictions of a gay character that I had ever seen on my TV as a pre-teen / early teen sometime in the '80s, and as such it has a profound effect on me, despite (or maybe because of?) the less the upbeat ending!

What's so sad and depressing about a deaf/mute who blows his brains out in the bedroom of a young girl who will have to quit school and work at the local 5 and Dime the rest of her life to support her gimp father?

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2019 1:31 PM

Is Billy Jo really a gay character? Never seen the film, but have read multiple synopses of it and it sounds like the kid is "taken advantage of" by an older man. Sounds pretty homophobic, which wouldn't surprise me given the director is right-winger Max "Jethro" Baer.

by Anonymousreply 5September 4, 2019 1:32 PM

If I had to live in a shithole Mississippi delta filled with Republicans, I'd pull a jumper, too!

by Anonymousreply 6September 4, 2019 1:33 PM

Pass the cornbread, please.

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2019 1:37 PM

Billy Joe drove all the local boys wild!

R8 is doing the Lord’s work.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is an Academy Award-nominated movie with memorable performances by Alan Arkin and Sandra Locke.

The Ode to Billy Joe is on the level of The Beverly Hillbillies.

Billy Joe's cakes.

Assuming the position up on Chocktaw Ridge.

Hmm, wonder why Max Baer stopped directing?

[quote]Pass the cornbread, please.

It's BISCUITS you stupid hillbilly!

by Anonymousreply 15September 4, 2019 3:47 PM

Benson grew to be a hot daddy type.

I'd still bugger him up on Chocktaw Ridge.

by Anonymousreply 16September 4, 2019 10:50 PM

I was just a kid when this came out but I knew there was something about Billy Joe I liked. As I got older, he got hotter and then I understood.

by Anonymousreply 17September 4, 2019 11:28 PM

Billy Joe would make excellent boyfriend material.

Where is OP posting from that it's eastern standard time and not daylight saving time?

We can do this over and over again, people. I got nothing better to do. It's annoying so please stop.

by Anonymousreply 19September 5, 2019 6:57 AM

Anyone watching?

by Anonymousreply 20September 5, 2019 8:41 PM

^^^No because we are confused by OP's start time in EST while in EDT.

by Anonymousreply 21September 5, 2019 9:19 PM

Well if you are that retarded then it is probably best you avoid it.

by Anonymousreply 22September 5, 2019 9:25 PM

^^^R22 Your use of 'retarded' as a pejorative is repugnant. Please just stop.

by Anonymousreply 23September 5, 2019 9:36 PM

Robby Benson was my one and only celebrity crush.

by Anonymousreply 24September 5, 2019 9:45 PM

^^^ And then you died?

by Anonymousreply 25September 5, 2019 10:21 PM

Watching “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.”

It is depressing as hell, but Alan Arkin is rather hot in it.

by Anonymousreply 26September 5, 2019 11:22 PM

So Billy Joe got it on with Roscoe P. Coltrane!

by Anonymousreply 27September 7, 2019 11:41 AM

Yes, he admitted to the girl he wanted it eventhough it was "a sin against nature, a sin against God."

[quote]Yes, he admitted to the girl he wanted it eventhough it was "a sin against nature, a sin against God."

He must have been doing it wrong.

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2019 2:05 AM

Well would you want to fuck Sheriff Coltrane?

by Anonymousreply 30September 8, 2019 3:41 AM

Robby Benson

Robby Benson (born Robin David Segal; January 21, 1956), 63 years old. Took his mother's maiden name as his stage name when he was 10.

So many Robby Benson TV movies in the 70s. He was ubiquitous.

by Anonymousreply 32September 8, 2019 4:54 AM

How did I not know he was a nice Jewish boy?

Favorite Robbie line: We forgot about the flowers!

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2019 5:50 AM

When he jumped, he was wearing a new men's cologne called Eau de Billy Joe.
