From Syria to Venezuela: Mystifying Left-Wing Support of Dictators.

f you’ve worked with left-wing activists, you have probably met many caring and intelligent people who genuinely believe in democratic values. Until it comes to foreign policy, when many leftists begin sounding more like Alex Jones than democratic socialists. “Today, the discourse of fascists and these ‘anti-imperialist leftists’ is virtually indistinguishable,” notes Leila Al Shami, a Syrian activist and writer. Anti-imperialist leftists and their fascist counterparts would have you believe, for instance, that Assad enjoys popular support, that he is saving Syria’s sovereignty, and that every Syrian who opposes him is a terrorist. And, in Venezuela, pro-democracy demonstrators are likewise reduced to mere pawns of US imperialism.

The leaders of the non-aligned movement in the 50s and 60s were at the vanguard of the anticolonial movement. Nasser, Gaddafi, and Castro are excellent examples. They were not democratic, but they were nationalists who wanted to take control back of their countries and in large part succeeded, at least for a while. Assad and Chavez/Maduro are the legacy of that movement. Of course they aren't good guys, but it's not "mystifying" to anyone who knows their history or who's from a non-Western country.

Did you read the link text?

by Anonymousreply 2September 4, 2019 10:44 AM

Blocking this OP, let's call him Igor, who is for some reason really pushing this shady website.

by Anonymousreply 3September 4, 2019 11:02 AM

Not mystifying at all when you see R3 -- just shut out anyone who points out uncomfortable facts.

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2019 12:02 PM

Leftist Dictators? Are we posting from the Cold War?

by Anonymousreply 5September 4, 2019 12:06 PM

The Left has always had a soft spot for oppressive, authoritarian regimes, such as the Left's unwaivering, unquestioned support for the various dictatorial regimes in the Soviet Union, Vietnam, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Left sought yet another oppressive, authoritarian ideology to support and promote. Islam and Muslims fit the bill perfectly. Discrete mention to the Left that it promotes a misogynist, homo-murdering, hate-filled ideology will be met with outraged shrieks of racism and whatever phobia is currently popular. Because like every dictatorial regime, one does not question or criticise. One submits. Silently.

Yawn, R6. Do you ever get bored of trolling, OP? How much do they pay you?

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2019 12:27 PM

A much longer list would be Republicant support for fascist dictators. There very few left wing dictators left in the world, OP, try to keep up.

by Anonymousreply 8September 4, 2019 2:54 PM

Who the fuck signs their post with their post title? OP is a confirmed fool.

by Anonymousreply 9September 4, 2019 2:56 PM

Fascist is such a subjective, often misused, word. Can be applied to leaders of both the Right AND Left. So can racist, bigot, authoritarian and dictatorial.

by Anonymousreply 10September 4, 2019 2:58 PM

F&F this asshole OP

by Anonymousreply 11September 4, 2019 3:00 PM

R10 uses the only tactic the right has: false equivalency. These terms are clearly not understood by you. We cannot have a conversation. Study up!

by Anonymousreply 12September 5, 2019 11:48 PM

Of course, the troll OP made only that one post.

by Anonymousreply 13September 5, 2019 11:50 PM

:eyeroll:

That we don't want to run around invading countries and installing our preferred dicators and henchmen doesn't mean we support the current henchmen and dictators. It appears Mr. Logic is not our friend today.

by Anonymousreply 14September 5, 2019 11:56 PM

The left and the right, always hates dictators, unless they are their dictators. Though it must be admitted that authoritarian Leftist regimes are responsible for more deaths over the last century than right wing authoritarian regimes. Then there are a few dictators like Juan Peron and the Peronists who defy categorizing as left or right.

by Anonymousreply 15September 6, 2019 12:04 AM

R15, did you even Hitler?

by Anonymousreply 16September 6, 2019 12:15 AM

R16 yes that includes Hitler. Hitler and the Nazis were responsible for around 14 million deaths, around the same as Stalin, so they cancel each other out. The deadliest one was Chairman Mao who was responsible for around 47 million deaths, he alone is responsible for the left claiming the most deaths. If you remove him, it is more even.

by Anonymousreply 17September 6, 2019 12:33 AM

R16 Hitler?, I barely Slappeder

by Anonymousreply 18September 6, 2019 12:54 AM

Trump-Putin-Kim Jong Un.

Yeah, blame on the lefties.

by Anonymousreply 19September 6, 2019 2:17 AM

R3

Are you implying that the op is a Russian troll? Russia supports Assad.
