Love the song. Lana is completely unique in the contemporary music scene,

The whole album is a masterpiece. If it doesn't get nominated for AOTY at the Grammys, I'm a slap somebody.

Ha, I like it - but it’s a Joni Mitchell/Leonard Cohen hybrid rip, and the end line of the chorus is actually “I’m your man” 😆😆😆

I think it is extraordinary that she has such a large following. She is not uniquely talented as a singer or songwriter. Yet she regularly sells out the Hollywood Bowl. I can only listen to a few of her songs.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 4, 2019 2:28 AM |
Exactly. Her music is excellent to use for snippets, commercials or woven into a movie score or tv scene but I can’t even get through a full song.
It’s too compressed and so artificial seeming to me. Like there is no real soul to it.
And if she makes one more black and white video that blurs in and out of focus while she rolls around in the grass in LA I’m going to lose it.
But I get that she has a lot of fans so she must be doing something right.

There's no one else at that level who is doing what she's doing right now and appeals to the group she appeals to. For all of the pop, hip hop and rap sometimes people just want to listen to her "sadcore" (her terminology) music backed by a classic instrumental style with a modern vibe.
I remember saying, when "Video Games" came out, that this kind of music and those lyrics don't traditionally go together and are from two different periods of time but somehow she makes it work.
She started one sleepy track, "Cola" with "My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola" and it somehow all just fit together.
She was perfect for "The Great Gatsby" soundtrack.

Somebody on twitter pointed out it sounds like the theme from Brokeback Mountain and now I cannot hear anything else when ever I listen to that track

Beautiful, thanks 0P. It’s heartening to hear a piece of contemporary music that has an actual melody, harmony lyrics etc.

She stole my career!

Lana is a member of the Hillsong cult and a Republican sympathizer. Maybe don't give her your $, honey.

She said she learned to play 6 chords on the guitar and realized she could probably write a million songs with that. A couple of years later, she's got a fringe following and is worth $14 million. She comes from a "comfortable family", not rich, but enough so that $14 million could last her.
But, she also has a history of a drinking problem, from her late teens onward.
My suspicion is she'll fade pretty quickly (the songs all sound the same. Turns out 6 chords on a guitar might not be enough musical training). She is beautiful but very young. The looks will fade, the talented will start to seem limited, the insecurities that led to drinking at 17 will flare up, she'll disappear.

Inexplicably, she has been around for about 10 years and her fanbase has only grown. I don't see the appeal but she's connecting with someone. Purportedly, she has a large gay following but there are rumors that she is not an LGBT ally.

Yeah, I picked up on the similarities the first time I heard the song. I wonder if she and Jack Antonoff will get sued over it? The melody is exactly the same. I think Jack wrote the music, so it's probably all his fault.

Lana said that Kanye should have been able to say what he in support of Trump but she's always made it clear that she supported Obama but hates Trump. She still says she's in the "middle" when it comes to her views, however. She made the news for trying to get people together online to "hex" Trump and gave them ingredients to cast the hex. She later admitted it wasn't a joke. She really did try to curse him.
She also performed at Jack Antonoff's, Ally Coalition Concert for LGBTQ equality, last December and if you look line you can hear her sing songs that never had made it onto one of her albums.

Saw her on SNL a few years back and she was absolutely terrible.
Surprised she’s still around.

What a snorefest kinda song for obese insomniacs. MEH!

She’s a poet. Whoever said she isn’t a talented songwriter just doesn’t get it. And that’s ok

As many music critics have stated recently, she's the best lyricist working today. She's every bit as good a lyricist as Joni Mitchell and Michael Cohen.

I hope Joni never hears this, it would kill her.

I've always been partial to what a friend refers to as "depressed lesbian music," but Lana doesn't do it for me.

I know there’s a corny sentimentality to the videos, and I’m usually a cynic, but I like them anyway. The lyrics, her voice, the images she chooses are all very compelling and communicate a sense of “look at what could have been, what we have lost” that is melancholy but sweet.

R26 she’s amazing

Hi, does James Franco=Norman Rockwell?! Will someone conspire and theorize with me? I think so. He tried to write that weird book about her without her, they IG’d a lot, he’s a ridiculous poetaster who I am sure blames the news for his downfall. Anyone agree?

I just find Lizzy - oops, I mean Lana to be very inauthentic. She's all facade with nothing behind it.

The song reminds me of Mazzy Star, Fade Into You.

It reminds me of Anna Nalick, Breathe (2am).

The new album has grown on me very slowly. I like this song and many others (especially “Cinnamon Girl”). The music in “Norman Rockwell” sounds ***exactly*** like the composition and arrangement of a Fiona Apple song—as much as Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” sounds like an impersonation of a Lana Del Rey song—and Lana’s singing in that track also calls to mind Apple. Her performance of another song makes me think a lot of Regina Spektor.
I think Lana is talented, but this album feels less distinctively, less uniquely Lana and more imitative of some other talented artists. It’s also harder to listen to because it’s soooo consistently meandering and sloooow. I do appreciate that her lyrics are expanding beyond the tragic-femme-fatale persona. That was cute for a while but no one has patients for a 35 year-old goth girl and she does seem finally to be presenting herself as more of a grownup and less as a postadolescent Wednesday Addams.
