OP's pic is magnificent.

Medvedev will crush Young Grigor in 3 sets in the semi. But Monfils will take it all in the end, probably in 5.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 3, 2019 9:22 PM |
Why suddenly is he doing this?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 3, 2019 9:23 PM |
If Grigor beat Fed it would be a stunner.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 3, 2019 9:23 PM |
SHAMEFUL ON STAN'S PART! has the whole stadium for him, playing a guy OBVIOUSLY not in physical great shape from the previous rounds long matches, a guy who is taped on on both legs who asked for the trainer early in the 1st set, who WON that 1st set despite making 21 unforced errors and 9 defaults, including holding serve early in that set when he served 3 double faults IN A ROW! and stan can't beat this guy!... the only thing medvedev did well was serving big (when he wasn't missing) and hacking, dropshotting and getting balls back, he couldn't even move that well... stan wins the 3rd set and then loses the next set 6-1 in about 15 minutes! really? REALLY?... this match is WHY WAWRINKA IS THE MALE MANDLIKOVA! can beat anyone anywhere anytime when he's on and the next match could lose to almost anyone (granted medvedev isn't just anyone) and play horrible horrible!..

I agree R5, another strange match.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 3, 2019 9:28 PM |
That wasn't peak Stan. Stan peaks rarely, but when he does he beats everyone. Except Roger.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 3, 2019 9:29 PM |
I would love to see Monfils take it all. This is the most focused that I've ever seen him, and that goes back at least to the 2008 French Open semis.

R5 not to mention Stan had set point on his own serve in the TB, and hit a routine forehand wide (it was such a bizarre soft groundstroke too).

by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 3, 2019 9:41 PM |
What are you even talking about, R9? The magic tricks that he performs are on the court and if he has a corny sense of humor, so what? It beats the snide sarcasm and worse of Krygios and Medvedev. And I doubt that Svitolina has been with him this long for his magic tricks.

It's looking more and more like a Federer-Nadal final. Nadal will beat Schwartzman barring a miracle, and I can't see Berrettini or Monfils beating Nadal. Federer should take out Dimitrov, and Medvedev is hobbled.
It's also looking like Serena's tournament, but she falls apart in finals these days. She may even have an off night against Wang.
Ugh, Stan, why do you disappoint? He's either a giant killer or he shits the bed.

Serena can lose to any of the remaining players if she comes in all blasé and over it. Or if she’s all tired and “ooh my ankle”. She needs to play every opponent as though they’re Sharapova, someone against whom she will NEVER lose a match. The way she spanked Sharapova comes purely from personal grudge and spite. She needs to bring that to every match.
Svitolina has been kicking ass and is gonna be a tough opponent. If Serena comes out playing the way she did versus McNally, she will absolutely lose. Same goes with her upcoming match against, presumably, Andreescu.
Nonetheless, she’s susceptible against Mertens/Veck-itch/Bench-itch unless she brings the A-game she showed tonight against 🍆 or last week against Sharapova.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | September 4, 2019 4:38 AM |
To be fair, this entire US hard court season Nadal has been playing MUCH better than Fed or Djokovic. I want new blood too, but easy draw or not, he's looked solid and has been serving great.. and they haven't. Also it's not like Fed had a hard draw - he was 7-0 against Dimitrov. Can't really fault Rafa for winning when the others failed to.
I did say a few threads ago that the US Open is always the best chance at a non-big-3 breakthrough... we will at least have *one* new finalist!
The ball is now in Schwartzman / Berrettini / Monfils' court though. I give LaMonf the best chance of the upset, he's playing phenomenal tennis (he really does look more focused), and hopefully with Svitolina's success he can keep trying to one-up her and make the most of this form. Praying for his body to stay healthy.

Grigor is reportedly a very nice guy so I'm happy he won but damn he's been lucky as hell this tournament. Seppi first round who's sucking lately then walkover from Coric who possibly would have beaten him, then lucky loser from qualifying Majchrzak (who had beaten flopping Jarry and Cuevas). Dimitrov's most impressive win was the straight sets over De Minaur. I thought for sure he'd get grinded to a pulp.
Tonight Grigor had some good moments. Who knows when Federer's back started hurting but he was really hitting some wild errors after the first set. Dimitrov was solid in the second though he choked at 5-3 and won after breaking Federer again. He was poor in the 3rd set and then Federer went way downhill the 4th and 5th.
Grigor has gotten VERY lucky this tournament, it's like 2017 Cincinnati and WTF all over again. Medvedev might be too injured to play or at least play a full match on Friday lol so this is a dream run but only 1 great win behind it. I would be fine with him winning the title though but that's probably not gonna happen.
I hate when players get injured. Even if I'm beyond sick of Federer and Djokovic I want them to lose because they were outplayed only.
Hopefully 1 of the guys left can defeat Nadal. He doesn't need another lucky slam run.
Monfils has been GOATing but can he keep it up? Will he choke like he usually does? or will he do something stupid and injure himself as he often does? Hopefully he realizes this could be his best chance at a slam and doesn't try to run down something that will cause injury. He can beat Nadal if he's in the zone
as for Schwartzman, he can run with Rafa but he's got no serve. Nadal usually owns players who don't have booming serves.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 4, 2019 5:42 AM |
It may turn out that Serena’s ankle twist may be the best thing that could have happened to her. Her footwork tonight was leagues above her prior movement. When she’s inspired to work extra hard in that category, she can perform like she did tonight. The ankle twist may have made her realize she must focus on her feet in order to avoid injury. If she keeps it up, she has a great chance going forward.

Couldn't believe what I've just seen: Daniil so casually defeated Stan!!!! As an atheist, I have to say - oh, my dear whateverness!!! Mark my word, Daniil will be in the final to rub the deplorable Flushing Meadows audience's nose in it. LOL!!! Win or lose, he'll just win.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 4, 2019 10:53 AM |
Wow, I'm very happy for Grigor. The match with Medvedev could be really good. Medvedev has more confidence so you gotta give him the edge. Can't see Lil Diego getting past Rafa, that's a bobcat versus a Bengal tiger. Berretini v Gael should be very, very fun. I'll pick Berretini, but happy either way.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 4, 2019 10:53 AM |
A Nadal-Medvedev final would be one to ignore as if it never happened. Also based on R58's pic, Medvedev's got about as much ass as Gumby.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 4, 2019 12:31 PM |
Nadal will get another cakewalk like in 2017 when the draw fell apart and he played Anderson in the final. To be fair, Nadal's draw looked tricky, but it quickly fell apart within the first few days. If Federer and Djokovic are both physically compromised next year, Nadal will easily surpass Fed's 20 Slam total. The ATP (Absolute Total Pussies) can't hang with the likes of those three, and if two of them are out, it's clear sailing for Rafa.
Dimitrov shouldn't be too excited. He beat a clearly compromised Federer, and it still took him five sets to do it. I think the final will be Medvedev v. Nadal and Nadal will win in three sets. As for the women, I don't know. Svitolina could beat Serena. I think Andreescu will come through on the other side, but Bencic could be a spoiler.

Young Grigor may have had a facial rejuvenation.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 4, 2019 1:46 PM |
People always say GOAT w Federer but he has losing head to heads with both his rivals and that includes losing head to heads in Grand Slam finals to them as well. Also - I love Roger - but he doesn’t have the fight that Nadal and even Djokovic have. You knew he was gonna lose the match in the fourth set even. :/
I think Nadal will get to 19 here at the US Open and as McEnroe said, will end year #1. Which means all three will have ended year #1 five times
by Anonymous | reply 67 | September 4, 2019 2:28 PM |
Clearly compromised Fed? I saw zero evidence of a problem. Did they say it was his back? I think he was surprised Gregor didn't roll over like the Fairy Elf Goffin. I couldn't believe Gregor kept coming back at him.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | September 4, 2019 2:29 PM |
LOL, R68, my partner, who doesn't understand tennis, could see something was wrong with Federer. Dimitrov beat a hobbled Federer, and it took him 5 sets to do it. There's no spinning it that this was some triumphant moment for Dimitrov. But you do you.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | September 4, 2019 2:42 PM |
I think Dimitrov really raised his game in set 2. He was playing very well and he beat Fed fair and square. Didn't watch the rest of it. I do think Fed fully expected a roll over by him. I'm happy for Dimitrov after the shitty year he's had.

by Anonymous | reply 73 | September 4, 2019 3:14 PM |
Federer's match with Dimitrov reminded me a bit of Nadal-Cilic. Although Nadal and Dimitrov were hitting some great shots here and there, errors flowed off of both Federer's and Cilic's rackets more and more as the match wore on. With Fed it was physical. He was grabbing at his upper back. With Cilic it was mental. The better players won on the day, and in the case of Nadal-Cilic, even an in-form Cilic may not have beaten Nadal. But if Federer wasn't compromised, he would have taken Dimitrov out. It doesn't matter, though. Dimitrov is in the semis. Let's see how he does against Medvedev, who also is physically compromised.

Bencic’s hot boyfriend is back and in the stands today!
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 4, 2019 4:39 PM |
I really hope the winner of Monfils/Berrettini will realize that Nadal stands SO FAR BACK to return first serves that they could easily set the point up for themselves by serving far out wide. Even if Nadal is expecting it, they can hit hard enough that he'll have no chance standing that far back. Second serves he comes closer to the baseline. That should take pressure off.
Cilic despite his height has never had an outstanding serve (even before his current serving woes). He would have been a much better player otherwise. Same with Del Potro.
Monfils and Berrettini are better servers but we'll see how intelligent the winner is today.
That's why Nadal struggles against big servers so much even if he usually wins. They ace the hell out of him because of his first serve return stance.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 4, 2019 5:49 PM |
During a while people thought that Federer was going to be another great talent that waste it without winning big.
Unlike Nadal and Djokovic, he doesn't have the natural characteristics that a big champion has but he was big just on his pure talent and the confidence he had from winning.
Nadal was able to react to be beat down again and again by Djokovic in 2011, the next year he played different, sometimes worked sometimes not, but he was able to change the tide. Federer took years and years to react to Nadal's game. It's true that he was very unlucky because Nadal's natural game is very uncomfortable to him, and the fact that Nadal has a strong mentality make Federer lose a lot of tight matches (in some of them he was the better player) but he never reacted till recently, he kept playing the same way again and again.
If Federer had Nadal or Djokovic mental strenght and determination his dominance could be absolute

I think Mertens will have extended points with Andreescu but she doesn't have enough firepower to really bother her unless Bianca's making lots of errors

R86 it's hard to say. Berrettini is the bigger hitter on serve and forehand but he can be inconsistent especially on the backhand. Nadal would mercilessly work on that side. Monfils can run and hit with Nadal but he's a proven headcase and injury prone.

Berrettini was able to back to the match, it would be very dangerous for him if Monfils holds that early advantage on the second.
And curiously after dominating Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the boys born in 2003 flopped big time on the US Open, today Nardi, Kodat (RG runner up) and Mochizuki (Wimbledon champion) were eliminated

by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 4, 2019 7:45 PM |
I'm always surprised by how bad Gael is in hot conditions. For someone with his fitness, athleticism, and melanin he just completely wilts. It's the main reason he always loses early at the AO (aside from his one QF run). He has too big of a 'tell' too, and his opponents see that he's fading and take advantage.
He's also playing too defensively now. He can do that so well, but in the first set and a half he was destroying Berrettini by dictating the play. Part of why he's had such a successful run here is his added focus, intensity, and aggression. Hopefully he can start that up again (love Berrettini but he will bend right over for Nadal).

At least the winner will get a day off before having to face Nadal (or Medvedev) on Friday.

Matteo has really pretty eyes, I was just checking out his insta page.

Allow the guys to play shirtless if they're hot.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 4, 2019 9:33 PM |
Nadal will beat whoever wins between Monfils and Berrettini. I can see why Monfils never became the player many thought he'd be given he won 3 of 4 Slams as a junior. He stands way too far back. Anyone who stands that far back will not beat Nadal.

Who is the very attractive guy in Gael's box with the insane hair?

Berrettini's short angle FH is a thing of beauty.

by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 4, 2019 10:20 PM |
Is Medvedev the only slimmer of a chance that Nadal loses? And hes kind of injured right?
by Anonymous | reply 135 | September 4, 2019 10:22 PM |
No GEMS LIFE double then.
I love Matteo, he is dreamy and nice to watch. Nice interview right now. But if Rafa comes through Lil' Diego, he is toast in the SF. His backhand wing is so much weaker than the forehand. I'd almost call it a 'hole' in his game but LaMonf was blatantly not exploiting it - the main reason he lost (as well as the DFs in important moments).
But that backhand is going to go right into Rafa's heavy lefty forehand. Game set match.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 4, 2019 10:25 PM |
Who knows, maybe lil Diego is ready for his David v. Goliath moment?!
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 4, 2019 10:27 PM |
omfg I hope Tom Rinaldi is not sick. Hopefully it's just allergies or he lost his voice from talking too much. If Berrettini suddenly comes down with something we know which asshole to blame

I dont care if he gets destroyed by Nadal. Hes so good looking it's nice to gaze upon him for one more match.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 4, 2019 10:31 PM |
I want an upset but Diego doesnt have much to hurt Nadal with. Hes not gonna out steady him.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | September 4, 2019 10:33 PM |
When Matteo shaves off all that facial hair, his face is a thing of beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 4, 2019 10:33 PM |
I’m afraid Diego won’t be able to reach Nadal’s topspin shots.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 4, 2019 10:34 PM |
Berrettini's only chance will be to serve very wide angles and hit as many forehands as possible. His backhand is just too inconsistent and be can attacked. Nadal will stand further back than Monfils but won't poop out from exhaustion
by Anonymous | reply 145 | September 4, 2019 10:34 PM |
LOL R144
Well Amanda Coetzer used to hand Steffi her ass on occasion. I know it's asking for a miracle, but, you know, Marianne Williamson and all that.

^Lovely chest hair!
by Anonymous | reply 148 | September 4, 2019 10:37 PM |
Schwartzman is aggressive with his forehand. He tries with his backhand but it can break down. He doesn't have a big serve due to his height so Nadal really should be standing much closer to return it than he does against the big guys. It would be a joke if he stood far back even on Diego's 1st serves.
Diego does hit good short forehand angles though and he has the benefit of practicing with Nadal so he knows his game very well. It's just a question of can he do what he wants to execute and will Nadal have loose moments like in the second set against Cilic last round. If Nadal on his game start to finish it's going to be straight sets
by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 4, 2019 10:42 PM |
If Matteo fixes the neckbeard and stops shaving his chest he will be even hotter.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka (who reportedly split with coach Dmitry Tursonov this week) has gone on a bit of a late night instagram meltdown...

I thought Berrettini and Monfils was a really tentative match. Seemed they were both holding back. Especially Monfils. He seemed gassed! Matteo needs to let that chest hair grow and leave his eyebrows alone. He is too pretty.

by Anonymous | reply 167 | September 5, 2019 1:36 AM |
Yeah I feel like Sabalenka caught feelings for Tursonov. She is young, I kind of feel bad for her. Especially in light of their on court coaching fights.
Andreescu is the real deal. She has only lost 4 matches on hard courts this year (one of those by retirement after winning IW), and has won FORTY. This chick took a four month gap through most of the season with injury, came back, and is STILL looking impossible to put away.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | September 5, 2019 1:43 AM |

LMFAO Nadal even stands far back for Schwartzman's serves! fucking pathetic. Diego's average first serve is 103 mph nowhere near most of the guys in the top 50. There's no reason why Nadal can't stand closer to return that. Hopefully Berrettini's coach is aware and will have him going for wide angle serves.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | September 5, 2019 2:19 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 183 | September 5, 2019 2:48 AM |
annnnnd Diego chokes the last 2 games. He had break points at 4-4 but missed and then blew his service game at 4-5
by Anonymous | reply 184 | September 5, 2019 2:50 AM |
And Nadal with the first set. All that effort from L'l D for nothing. Shit.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | September 5, 2019 2:50 AM |
Nadal looks older than 33. But so does Djokovic. Cant believe they are in their early thirties. Looking like they are pushing 40 with a decent amount of wrinkles.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | September 5, 2019 3:14 AM |
well a lot of the players, especially the Euro males, don't wear sunblock so they look like shit by the time they're 27
look at Dimitrov. He's so handsome but his skin is HORRIBLE
if you spend hours every for 20 years out in the sun and don't wear sunblock you will look older
by Anonymous | reply 187 | September 5, 2019 3:20 AM |
You have to wonder what will happen when Nadal plays someone who is in-form and adult-sized. His forehand misfires a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | September 5, 2019 3:24 AM |
Schwartzman has had his chances but he's missing a lot. He probably feels uncomfortable as he's having to press so much in rallies but it's the only way.

by Anonymous | reply 191 | September 5, 2019 4:00 AM |
he choked that third set point. Very tight forehand
at least he's making Nadal work for it
I can just imagine how OCD Nadal is going to go nuts that his nightly routine will be pushed back because of this late finish
by Anonymous | reply 192 | September 5, 2019 4:02 AM |
what other OCD routine?
by Anonymous | reply 193 | September 5, 2019 4:11 AM |
I don't know the details but I'm sure that when he's playing tournaments, Nadal likely has a very strict routine each night he must follow. I'm sure he likes to go to sleep at a certain time too. He's going to have to rush his routine after this match.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | September 5, 2019 4:15 AM |
Nadal just got a massage with cream on his forearm and underarm area!!! don't tell me he's injured too. That would be nuts to have the big 3 all out of commission

If not, I want the hot Matteo to win!

by Anonymous | reply 198 | September 5, 2019 4:38 AM |

despite the arm issue in the third, Nadal won with an easy score

Nadal will win the whole thing unless his shoulder/arm is injured. Berrettini could bother Nadal with his short-court forehands, but Nadal's forehand will go to Berrettini's weaker backhand. It'll be like watching Fed-Nadal back before Roger got a new racket and figured out how to use his backhand against Nadal. But if Nadal is injured and can't execute, Matteo has a very outside chance.
The women's matches are a tougher call. Svitolina is the kind of player who can beat Serena if Serena is off her game. Bencic can redirect Andreescu's power like she did against Keys. I think Andreescu has more variety, though, and may be able to take this one because she's been inspired this whole summer.

anything to sell papers!
On Monday, Croatian-Australian tennis star Ajla Tomljanović was spotted in the box of Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the fourth round, according to Tennis Tonic.
An Instagram post also surfaced of Tomljanović, 26, who previously dated Australian bad boy Nick Kyrgios, at Italian eatery Via Della Pace in New York with Berrettini, 23, and Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime.
“Wow wow wow… can someone play tennis here?! 😱😍😜 Grazie infinite @ajlatom @matberrettini@felixaliassime,” restaurant co-owner Giovanni Bartocci shared with his followers.
Though Tomljanović and Berrettini’s current status remains unclear, her previous relationship with Kyrgios, 24, was long-documented.
In 2017, Tomljanović scrubbed all photos of the couple from her social media page after Kyrgios was spotted with other women during Wimbledon. They started dating in 2015.
As for Kyrgios’ recent affairs, he was photographed in August with Genie Bouchard’s twin sister Beatrice.
Both Kyrgios and Tomljanović’s Open runs have come to an end this year. Berrettini faces Rafael Nadal in the semifinals on Friday.

I want a Dimitrov-Berrettini final
but I know if both are healthy it will be Nadal vs. Medvedev
actually even if Medvedev has a bit of an injury he could still beat Dimitrov who has had a very lucky tournament (except his one great match vs. De Minaur).
I think Dimitrov will only beat Medvedev if his leg is impeding his movement. If it's just sore, Medvedev wins

All opponents so far have wilted at the sight of Serena's ass of doom! If she wears a thong in the final, she's a sure winner.
But seriously, when she plays like this, it's hard to see anyone beating her. However, as we've seen lately, Serena can't seem to bring it in the final.
I'm interested in Bencic-Andreescu. I'm really not sure who will win this one.

I will always look forward to the French for years to come. That's one slam grandma will have a hard time winning.
by Anonymous | reply 302 | September 6, 2019 12:57 AM |
Both Andreescu and Bencic hit harder than Svitolina so whoever wins will give Serena a challenge in the final
Andreescu hits harder and is the better athlete. Both have variety and good hands but I say edge to Andreescu there. Bencic anticipates very well and stands closer to the baseline

As others have said Serena hasn’t brought it to the finals. That being said I haven’t seen her look this good since she came back from having her baby. The way she’s moving around the court is pretty phenomenal. She’s also coming to the net more often. Serena is in it to win it. I’m calling the USO for Serena.
I loved the shade from Billie Jean King tonight. She said wants Serena to win #25 at the Australian Open at the beginning of next year. Love her!

Serena does look good, R310. Getting to these finals, at some point you have to think she'll overcome her recent lapses in them. Serena's A game is still better than anyone else's on tour.
Also, LOL, yes to Billie Jean's shade! That was a giant fuck you to homophobe Margaret Court. It reminded me of Ash Barty's shade at Margaret by saying something like she remembered all the great Australian champions like Sam Stosur and never mentioned Court. Awesome shade!

R314 The “Battle of the Sexes” movie with Emma Stone portrayed their relationship as icy and distant

Bianca ain't lost a hard court match since February. She does look exhausted, on her last legs, and not quite as strong as Serena when hitting on the run, but she doesn't seem to know how to lose matches right now. Which is scary (and kind of annoying for her opponents lol). Plus Serena's nerves in finals have been her undoing.
I'm actually much more interested in this final than Screamona v Serena at Wimbledon, or that nonsense at the French. Plus we get the wig battle!
Go steal that homophobe's record, Serena!
by Anonymous | reply 325 | September 6, 2019 3:47 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 326 | September 6, 2019 3:48 AM |

I want Serena to tie that Court record.
by Anonymous | reply 327 | September 6, 2019 4:10 AM |
I would like to see Serena get to 25 and beat the record but after that I would find it hard to root for her cause then shes just playing to top her own records that will never be beaten. Wonder when she will retire. I think shes said she wants another kid and shes not getting any younger.
by Anonymous | reply 328 | September 6, 2019 4:18 AM |
Bianca's dad is pretty adorable. She's in a final game but he's still amused at being on the big screen. Hopefully it's because he has a strong sense of perspective and isn't a complete narcissist lol.
I'll be happy whatever the final result.
by Anonymous | reply 329 | September 6, 2019 4:52 AM |
Bianca is the future of women's tennis but she will fall to Serena in the final. Serena's nerves have gotten the best of her in finals but she hasn't looked this good in years. She's unstoppable and Bianca has looked beat down her last 2 matches. Add her fatigue to her first GS Final and it will be Serena that will rise to the top. Something about this USO just feels like Serena's "moment". I've felt tentative before but not this time, she's going all the way. Would love to see Serena and Rafa in that winner's portrait together, they are great friends true Champions. My two favorite players.

by Anonymous | reply 351 | September 6, 2019 11:58 AM |
R333: I'm not on the mood to defend Garbiñe, but frankly they are not even comparable. Ostapenko is a one slam wonder, Garbiñe won two GS (against Venus and Serena), played another GS final, one semi, 3 qtr and even in a disastrous year like this one she was on the second week on two GS. Jelena has her RG, one semi at Wimbledon and another qtr at Wimbledon and that's all.
She is young and probably will get more opportunities but she flopped hard after her title.
Garbiñe was number one, and played well for a while, unfortunately she is not focused at all right now
by Anonymous | reply 352 | September 6, 2019 1:34 PM |
And about the final, i thought Serena would crush Halep at Wimbledon (it was the other way round), here the match seems way tighter.
It's probably the most interesting women's final in a good while. Like a change of guard.
Winning or losing i think Bianca is the real deal. She has the game and the right attitude

The team behind Serena Williams is worried that Meghan Markle’s presence at the US Open final on Saturday could distract from the match, a source told Page Six.
“Serena asked her coach about Meghan coming when she won last night and everyone is worried, as tennis players are very superstitious, and Serena lost when Meghan came to watch her at Wimbledon,” a source told us on Friday.
“[Williams’ coach] Patrick keeps telling her, ‘Focus focus focus.’ The aim is getting her to win her 24th Grand Slam.”
Our source also told us that the Duchess of Sussex’s trip was planned as recently as a couple of days ago.
A separate source said, “Serena adores Meghan and she’s so excited about her coming to the Open.”
As Page Six previously reported, sources said Markle’s trip to support close pal Williams is also a “PR stunt” to save face after a couple of scandals put her and husband Prince Harry in hot water this summer.
She put a no-photo ban into effect at Wimbledon and she and Harry took a private jet to Elton John’s house in France for a family vacation, despite being environmentalists. John later defended the couple and their right to privacy and safety.

Chrissie Evert wants Serena to play for another 2 or 3 years, she said as much last night.
Of course the twats over at ESPN have their new fave Coco, and Patrick will be right by her side, so they can cheer themselves to death over her. This girl may never win a single tournament on the WTA, much less a grand slam!

So happy that Cabal/Farah won another slam! Good final and very emotional in the speeches too, I had no idea that Colansita guy died but he's basically the only reason there is tennis in their country at all. Aside from the Bryans there haven't really been a lot of dominant males doubles teams lately, i'd love to see these two complete the box set in 2020 and take the Olympic Gold for Colombia.

by Anonymous | reply 381 | September 6, 2019 8:06 PM |
Medvedev's quivering, chalked-up white hands (in the hallway interview) don't give me a lot of confidence. He looks like he should be on an IV drip. But I still think Grigor has been blessed by a lot of luck this Open and he isn't really in as good form as the Russian racist.

I don't get the hatred for Nadal to the extent that anyone would like to see Medvedev prevail over Nadal. Yes, Nadal can be arrogant and entitled, but he comes nowhere near Medvedev's level of assholery.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | September 6, 2019 9:31 PM |
Medvedev can be an asshole on court, off court he seems a nice guy with some personality (someothing quite uncommon on atp).
Apart of haters, i don't think people don't like Nadal, but some fans are tired of watching the big 3 win again and again and again.
I like Grigor and Matteo, but to be honest i want a Medvedev-Nadal final
by Anonymous | reply 397 | September 6, 2019 9:34 PM |
I like Medvedev. And I like Nadal a lot. Hope Nadal wins it all.

R402 you’re not wrong there but if you get into the actual tennis of it, it’s a bad match up for Medvedev

by Anonymous | reply 439 | September 7, 2019 2:53 AM |
r432 I'm not sure who was calling the match tonight; but it is practical and astute without the CONSTANT blather that 'other' feeds provide. Also fun because when the camera shows some ridiculous attention-whore celebrity in the stands, more often than not nothing is said because they don't have clue who it is. Virginia Wade was fun this week calling a women's match.
by Anonymous | reply 440 | September 7, 2019 2:57 AM |
R427 they were talking about his ankles. He has weak ankles. Sometimes he tries to practice without them to strengthen them but earlier this year in Gstaad he almost injured himself. So he just always wears them now when he plays
Berrettini should have won that first set but he started making so many errors. From 4-0 to 6-4 to losing 6-8 yikes. He put in a good performance though. He didn't embarrass himself. I think we'll be seeing more of him in the latter rounds of big tournaments regularly.
Dimitrov, well it's up in the air. He had a lot of luck at this tournament with the draw and Coric/Federer's injuries. The way he's playing now, he could definitely win small or even medium sized tournaments but he's still not a contender for any more Masters or any slams. Too many wild errors today against Medvedev.
I don't like Medvedev because of his bigoted comments in the last couple years but damn it's time for a new man to win a slam. I'm so fucking sick of the big 3. Nadal had a dream draw and he'll likely win on Sunday
by Anonymous | reply 442 | September 7, 2019 3:34 AM |
*sometimes he tries to practice without the ankle braces
by Anonymous | reply 443 | September 7, 2019 3:34 AM |
Yes, Matteo should have won the first set. It's too bad, at least he didn't embarrass himself, now he can seek solace and comfort from his new female fans who are no doubt waiting for him at that restaurant in the east village lol.

R396, even those that hate Nadal don't call him arrogant. He's anything but.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | September 7, 2019 5:58 AM |
Really, R447? How would you characterize him telling an umpire that he'll make sure that he never calls another match of his again? That's the height of arrogance.
by Anonymous | reply 448 | September 7, 2019 6:47 AM |
r448, give it up. Nadal is one of the most humble players ever. Your irrational hatred of him doesn't change that.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | September 7, 2019 6:54 AM |
That's him being real, R448. A bad ref is a bad ref. Nadal isn't Serena. He does not have a history of going after refs. So if he did? It might have been justified.

I watched Serena's press conference, and it's interesting to see her answer when they ask who the two or three toughest players to play against have been in her career. She mentions Venus as her toughest opponent ("who has beaten me more than any other player and won the most grand slams in that era"), then Henin and Clijsters, Davenport ("super tough to play against"), and Hingis.
It was telling that she didn't mention Kerber, or Azarenka/Sharapova/Halep/Kvitova/Ivanovic. I guess she feels (like most fans do) that the current crop don't really have 'it' in the same way the late 90s to mid 00s girls did. So many greats of the game, all with completely different playing styles, all competing in the same period.
She does also say there's so much more depth now and kind of admit that the top players used to be able to cruise to the 2nd week and then duke it out between each other, whereas now there are no easy matches. I guess that's true, but it's more like the whole field has evened out. The top players now aren't as good as the top players then, but the lower ranked ones are slightly better.
by Anonymous | reply 452 | September 7, 2019 8:13 AM |
Medvedev is a backboard. That guy returns everything never seems to tire. Rafa will have to bring his A game and use short angles and droppers.
by Anonymous | reply 453 | September 7, 2019 10:49 AM |
R449: Sorry but that's far from being a hater, that happened and it's not the first time.
Nadal is a really nice guy but the time rule can bring the worst of him. Press give him the RF treatment and when he has bad attitude is rarely reported .
It's an interesting final and i'm happy that at least one nextgen is up to the challenge but i think Medvedev's game is not a good fit to defeat Rafa. Daniil is good on defense but Nadal is better and he has more offenssive weapons than the Russian.
Daniil will need to serve really well to have a chance
by Anonymous | reply 454 | September 7, 2019 11:04 AM |
R452 I find surprising she didn't mention Capriati who was one of her toughest rivals.
And yes, it's pretty obvious the level on woman's tour is far from being the same. This is a low cost Serena in comparission of what she was at the beginnning of her career and she is winning as many GS and reaching finals when she is out of form.
The problem is the top players are not consistent and if you don't play well on regular basis you are bound to fail on big matches
by Anonymous | reply 455 | September 7, 2019 11:07 AM |
Giving he was supposed to be the one who will dominate in a near future i supposed that it would be hard to swallow that Medvedev, who is one year older but it was behind him the whole time till last month reach the final of the US Open.
But no, as long as Sascha has instagram the rest it doesn't matter
by Anonymous | reply 457 | September 7, 2019 12:00 PM |
R447/R449, I don't hate Nadal at all, I just don't have tunnel vision and blinders when it comes to the fact that he can at times, though rarely, demonstrate a propensity to abuse his influence. It's never appropriate to call out an umpire like that in front of the crowd and expect lack of impartiality about who calls your matches no matter who you are.
by Anonymous | reply 458 | September 7, 2019 12:47 PM |
I saw Nadal smile at a ball kid in the match. We never see him smile during play. It was sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 459 | September 7, 2019 1:03 PM |
R455 It’s true, Capriati was a good foil for her back in the day. I think Serena and Venus clashed with her though (they clashed with Hingis too but respect for the game is there) and they didn’t play her as much in the slams as the others mentioned so maybe that's why Serena didn't mention her.
Jenny was also a terrible sport, for example her tantrums and gamesmanship in that Miami final where Venus saved 8 match points and beat her, or in the 2004 US Open QF against Serena which is the reason Hawkeye was introduced. She often made questionable comments about them in the press and was generally a bit unstable as we all know (trying to be nice here). Maybe if she had been more involved in tennis since her retirement (as the others all are), Serena would have thought to mention her.
I agree that the girls today don’t play well week to week, all trying to peak for the slams and mostly faltering in those big matches because of it. Different to the ATP where players (like Medvedev right now) are in the rhythm of winning a lot of matches and warmup tournaments and taking that form into the majors.
by Anonymous | reply 460 | September 7, 2019 1:18 PM |
personally, i think of perhaps all of serena's greatest rivals, it was capriati who had no fear of her whatsoever.. henin? awesome but "feared' serena on grass or any faster surface, davenport? once again awesome but "feared" serena on a grass court or anywhere other that hard courts, clijsters? awesome again, but "feared" serena on a fast court... i don't think capriati gave a crap on what surface a match with serena was on....and i think serena knew this as well...
funny how serena in her prime had more tougher opponents then she does now past her prime? think of it, among today's "top players" who are shoo in's for the hall of fame? meanwhile you have capriati, henin, davenport, clijsters, venus all hall of famers worthy..
by Anonymous | reply 461 | September 7, 2019 1:23 PM |
R461 Osaka with 2 majors and still just 21 can be a hall of fame players. Also Kerber has 3 majors and really maximized her abilities to do that which to me is hall of fame material. I know majors maybe shouldnt automatically equal hall of fame but if you win multiple ones, especially at least three or more then a case should be made.

Twice as many as required for hall of fame entry.

Anyone who has one a major will be in the hall of fame more or less (but not the ones ranked #1 without a slam - looking at Safina and Jankovic there). Dem the rules.

I don't think any of those players feared Serena. No doubt, they respected her and her skills, and knew she was a tough match. Clijsters, for instance, moved just as well as Serena. Davenport hit as hard, if not harder than Serena.
