Lida: Mmm hmmm! We’re gonna, um...gossip! And then we’re gonna, um...talk about stuff...and stuff.
Melina: Mmm hmm. And the first person we’re gonna talk about, is that, um...that lawyer girl, Ally McBeal!
(a picture of Calista Flockhart appears at the bottom)
Melina and Lida: Oh my gahhhh!!!
Melina: She needs a make-over bad!
Lida: Yeah, her tetas are even smaller than mine!
Melina: And all those sharp, ugly bones stickin out all over! Stoopid, what is your man gonna bounce on??
Lida: That’s right! She should eat somethin, ya know? Ok...I heard...I heard that once, um...she was sittin there, and there was a cheeseburger in front of her, and she didn’t eat it!
Melina: Oh my gah! She’s so stoopid!
Lida: Why she so stoopid?? Ok...I love cheeseburgers! I like the ones that you can get at that place...that place where you could, um...drive through it!
Melina: “Have it your way!”
Lida: No, no not that place. You could drive through it...you could drive through it!
Melina: Oh, “I love this place!”
Lida: No, not that place. That place you gotta get out of the car. This place you could just drive through it...um...
Melina: Um...
Lida: Um...
Melina: Um...um...um...oh! Oh! “You want fries with that?”
Lida: Yeah that place!
Melina: Stoopid, that’s the “have it your way” place!
Lida: Alright...sorry! Mmm, I’m gettin hungry talkin about it.
Melina: No, we’re gonna go eat afterwards, you know what I’m sayin? Oh! And Ally McBeal, you should come with us!
Lida: Yeah! Yeah! And...(holds up the dog and talks for him) Ally, if you come with us, I could share my Kibbles and Bits with you! (talks to the dog) Oh my gah, you’re so sweet Papi! Isn’t he cute?
Melina: Yeah it was cute about the first 300 times you did it, Lida!
Lida: Why don’t you shut up?
Melina: No you shut up!
Lida: That’s right...
Melina: Ok, so here’s what bony-ass would look like after a make-over from us!
(shows a picture of Calista Flockhart with hair and make-up similar to Melina’s)
Melina: Yeah, except I’d make her eat a pound of butter!
Lida: Yeah! Alright...who we gonna talk about now?
Melina: Oooh! We’re gonna talk about THIS loca!
(a picture of Anne Heche appears at the bottom)
Lida: Oh my gah, oh my gah...you know about her, right?
Melina: (begins to laugh) Shut up stoopid! Shut up!
Lida: Right? You know what she likes, right?
Melina: Shut up, stoopid! I’m not listening!
Lida: You know, right? She likes tetas! Oh my gahh!!! (laughs)
Melina: Her kitty cat only eats fish! Oh my gahh!! (laughs)
Lida: Ooooh dang! Oooh dang! (laughs) Alright, alright. I mean, I love you, LeeLee, and stuff...but I could never...
Melina: I mean, I love you too, but you know...there’s no woman that I could, you know...
Lida: I could never...well, maybe...except for Selena!
Melina: Aye! Que linda, Selena!
Lida: Selena, I love you! Wherever you are!
Melina: She’s in Heaven, stoopid!
Lida: Alright...
Melina: Ok, so here’s what that lesbiana, Anne Heche, would look like after a make-over from Lida and Melina!
(shows a picture of Anne Heche, with hair and make-up similar to Lida’s)
Lida: Oooh, she looks so good now, maybe she could finally get herself a man!
Melina: Mmm hmm!

OP, I agree. Early MadTV in the late '90s was a riot.
In Living Color was better than SNL, too.
I think the last time I liked SNL was during the Chris Farley-Sandler-David Spade years. Since then, it just seems like the skits go on forever and they're just not funny.

Stephanie Weir, Debra Wilson, Nicole Parker, Nicole Sullivan, Mo Collins and Michael McDonald reading the phonebook would be funnier than SNL.

SNL is 50% actors laughing at the horrible writing at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 2, 2019 9:19 PM |
Agreed it was much funnier. I have many favorites but Stephenie Weir as Anna Nicole always left me in stitches. Also loved anything with Lida and Melina. The Lost sketch was pretty funny too. And any music parody.
Mad tvs original characters were so much funnier than SNLs ever were. They felt so much more true to life than SNLs characters. Like some oddball you might actually meet while SNLs characters just felt forced. I don't understand why the actors and actresses of Mad TV didn't have bigger comedy careers while former SnL stars are constantly getting movies greenlit.
One thing I found funny is that Mad TV was raunchy and politically incorrect compared to SNL yet they had a far more ethnically diverse cast than SNL. And they hired them because they wanted to, not because of media pressure.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 2, 2019 10:07 PM |
I think time will show how underrated and ahead of its time MADtv really was. Sure they weren't the most politically correct comedy show, but they never felt transgressive, and they made everyone a target. In a time when SNL struggles with diversity MADtv had already cast members of every race on the show and gave them some truly funny shit to do.
Ultimately, however, they're completely different breeds of sketch comedy. Their structure is different, and they required different strengths in the end.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 2, 2019 10:08 PM |
Same here r37. Debra Wilson could do NO WRONG! She was comedic gold. I wish she had a bigger career. Her Whitney Houston was the gold standard of impersonations.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 2, 2019 10:13 PM |
I can't post a link right now but Michael MacDonald 's Stuart was fucking hilarious. I loved when he would suddenly switch from the high pitched soft castrato voice to the angry rasp. So disturbing and funny. And Mo Collins was pitch perfect as his indulgent mother. Loved the one where Stuart was sent to therapy. Speaking of Michael MacDonald he had a hilarious anecdote about meeting Faye Dunaway.

I want to see a film with Michael MacDonald, Debra Wilson, Stephanie weir, Bobby Lee, and Mo Collins. If Hollywood can produce a dozen movies a year starring former snl stars why can't they give the far funnier Mad TV actors a shot? I guess it's all about connections.

I adore that skit and I'm glad you pointed that out. I think Mo was trying to be generous towards Deborah because Aries was totally stealing focus during Deborah's brilliant scowl-to-smile impersonation of Whitney the first time she tried the "are you Diane?" bit. I don't know why but in so many of these skits Aries seems to pull the focus away from Deborah's brilliant Whitney and it kind of bums me out.
