Macy Gray received one of the last major debut album campaigns before the internet stole all the money and songs from the music business.
"I Try" is her biggest hit single, and her only one to reach Billboard's Top 40.

Yes.
Her album of covers is really good, too.

Yes. Love it.

It was similar to Adele's 21 and Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Little Pill where every member of your family probably owned it also.

I liked the album a good deal. Nice production and strong lyrical content, she has a personality that shines through on the songs. Also she's more than just a one-hit wonder. "Sex-O-Matic Venus Freak", "I Can't Wait To Meetchu", "I've Committed Murder", "Do Something" and "Why Didn't You Call Me" all from that first album are gems.
I also have her greatest hits and a lot of other songs like "Still", "Sexual Revolution", "Love Is Gonna Get You", "She Ain't Right for You", and her cover of "Walk This Way".
It's nice that someone with a voice (and look) as unique as hers was able to break through. I don't think anyone before or since has had a voice that was THAT out there and still achieved big pop success. The closest is probably T-Boz from TLC who also had that scratchy tone. Also it's well known that Macy G is difficult to work with and had substance abuse issues so to see her still thriving and doing well now is a joy.
I don't think her recent stuff has been as consistent but she's done some GREAT covers. And just in the past 2 years or so she's done some more artistic songs (with some really cool videos).

Never got the appeal. She has a voice that could pull a sled.

I loved her voice...but I thought she got into heroin?

She studied screenwriting at USC before she became a singer.

Drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. And a bad attitude.

Loved the debut album.
Loved "Demons."
Her last few albums have been....meh.
She's undeniably talented, but I think her voice is a hard match to a lot of music. I also think she fought her own demons - mental or chemical.

I didn't like "I Try" or "Still" at all when they were first released, probably because I just found Macy's voice too irritating. But it's an acquired taste. I now think they're both fantastic songs.
