A Larry King Special: the Death of Valerie Harper
It's a tough day here on Larry King Live.
We're sad about the death of the beloved Valerie Harper. I loved her so. I wished I could have loved her even more, but she rejected by advances.
Valerie, as you all know thanks to Rosanna's tweet, was a member of the Planet of the Apes. So, we'll talk about her favorite monkeys later in the show.
But first, this word from our sponsor Geritol. Geritol, it's my favorite mid morning drink.

Joining us now are Phyllis George and Lynda Day George to talk about working with Valerie on the Bob Newhart Show.
Ladies, welcome. Tell me what did you think about Valerie? Was she as ditsy in real life as her Phyllis character was? Was she disappointed when her spin off series only lasted two seasons, while Chloris Leachman's spin-off ran for five seasons.

Welcome back, as we celebrate the life and mourn the death of Valerie Harper. So young. I remember when she was just a little girl on that first season of One Day at a Time.

Joining us now is Sandy Duncan.
Sandy, welcome. So glad to have you here.
Sandy, you were in a strange position as far as Valerie went. You had your own comedy series in the mid 1980s, then they abruptly fired you and eventually replaced you with Valerie Harper. What was that like? Were you and Valerie friends beforehand? Did you feel like she was stabbing you in the back when she became the head of the Hogan family on the show?

Caller, what are your favorite moments of Valerie when she played the saucy widowed wife on Harper Valley PTA?

Our next guest is musician Steve Winwood.
Steve, you had a Top 40 hit about Valerie. Was this a love song to her? What inspired you to sing your song to her? Did you share the profits from the song with Valerie?
And most importantly, are you still the same boy you used to be?

True story, Valerie did not play the harp.
On a similar note, she may have been one of my wives. One of my wives played the harp, right? I think statistically speaking it has to be true.
Next, we'll be taking a call from Virginia from Atlantic City, the founder of the Rhoda Penmark Fan Club and a big fan of Valerie's Rhoda character on the Mary Tyler Moore show. Buck might have never killed little Claude Daigle, but Rhoda definitely did.
And now a word from our sponsor, Carter's Little Liver Pills. If you have a small liver, just wash down one of Carter's little pills with some Long Island Iced Tea--the best thing to come out of Long Island since Flavor Flav's giant neck clock.

We are lucky to have Carlton the Doorman, who worked at the building where Miss Harper lived. Carlton, we understand you discovered Valerie’s body. Was her home filled with mannequins from her work as a department-store window dresser?

When we come back from the break, we'll talk to Valerie's sister, Marge Simpson.
Stay with us.

And now, my old friend Liza is on the line to reminisce about Valerie.
Liza, is it true that you knew Valerie before her hit novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" came out? Did the success of her book change her, or was she still the same old nice girl from Minnesota that you always knew her to be?

And we're back. Joining me now is Valerie's husband, Chris Kositchek.
Chris, welcome. You and Valerie were married in the mid 1980s and had three boys. And then you divorced Valerie and married Sandy Duncan.
Oh, you go by the name Roman Brady now? Really. Well, welcome Roman.
And it wasn't a divorce? Valerie died? Back in 1987? How can that be when she died today?

When we return, we'll talk to Valerie's niece and nephew about their beloved aunt and what it's like to cope with this tragic loss. Stay tuned for a talk with Lisa and Bart Simpson.
But first, a message from Depends, the adult diaper. You can depend on Depends. I do. Every day.

The great black soul singer Amy Waterhouse has a song called "Valerie," which was based on her longtime relationship with Valerie Harper.
We've contacted Amy's manager for a statement and will bring that to you when we have it. Also Leslie Uggams.

Joining us now is actress Rosanna Arquette.
Rosanna, welcome to the show. Glad to have you here.
A year or so ago, you tweeted that Valerie was Muslim. This breaking news caused quite a stir. But I must compliment you. Good investigative journalism there. No one else uncovered that fact but you did. How did you get this information. Did you did deep into Valerie's family genealogy? Did you have private eyes following her? Did you place a spy cam in a mosque?
What made you look into this in the first place? Was it that long standing rivalry between you and Valerie over songs? You both had songs written about you. They were both Top 40 hits. Toto wrote their song "Rosanna" about you while Eric Clapton sang "Valerie" to her.

Superstar of stage, screen and classic TV - Miss Suzanne Somers is here. Suzanne, you know what it's like to be fired from a hit TV show that bears your name. That's gotta hurt kid. Do you think that Valerie ever recovered from being replaced on the Mary Tyler Moore Show? Also, Cancer. God forbid. Why did you survive and not Valerie - could hormones have helped her? I know you reached out. Ovarian cancer took Gilda Loopner, Lucy and the fabulous Barbara Eden too. Are all the pretty funny ladies cursed? Suzanne, you and Ann-Margret are still gorgeous today at almost 55 years old! Don't ever stop performing. Cloris Leachman has said that Vals husband killed her with sugar. Tonight we mourn her, Tomorrow we'll be back with Trixie Mattel - who knows a thing or two about headscarves.
