Kirsten Dunst gets honest about her career: "I've had a lot of disappointments"

When asked when was the first time she ever felt the power of storytelling, Kirsten Dunst answers that she never felt that power because she had a lot of disappointments.

Mentions "Marie Antoinette" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous" as projects that people now love, but were panned at the time of release: "I feel like lot of the things I do people like later"

Admits that she feels like she had never really been recognized in her industry outside her 2 Golden Globe nominations and 1 Emmy nomination: "I don't know. Maybe they just think I am the girl from Bring It On. I don't know.".

When asked if that makes her angry, Dunst answers no, but she sometimes wonders: "What did I do?"

Thinks that maybe she's too chill and doesn't play the game enough, but she still does everything she's supposed to: "It's not like I'm rude or not doing publicity"

Knows that all you have in the end of the day is your work and that's what people want out of an actor, but thinks that it would be nice to recognized by her peers.

Are we sure about the rude part?

by Anonymousreply 1August 29, 2019 6:39 AM

“”I don't know. Maybe they just think I am the girl from Bring It On. I don't know.””

It’s not like Hollywood is a Cheerocracy, Torrance!

by Anonymousreply 2August 29, 2019 6:51 AM

She's not beautiful and she doesn't have much of a personality. Being nice is not a personality.

by Anonymousreply 3August 29, 2019 7:20 AM

She’s never been a movie star who sold tickets. Yet she’s respected as an actress and has been working steadily since childhood thanks to Interview with the Vampire. She probably should have been more active as a producer if there was material she wasn’t being offered but was interested in pursuing.

by Anonymousreply 4August 29, 2019 7:31 AM

Didn't a drug addiction make her pretty much unemployable and an insurance risk? I believe it was Melancholia that saved her (the role and her facial expressions when Lars Van Trier went on a pro-Hitler rant during a promo event).

by Anonymousreply 5August 29, 2019 7:52 AM
She probably should have been more active as a producer if there was material she wasn’t being offered but was interested in pursuing.

Isn't that what Reese Witherspoon is doing?

by Anonymousreply 6August 29, 2019 7:53 AM

I love her tiny tiny teeth.

by Anonymousreply 7August 29, 2019 8:08 AM

Yes [R6] Reese, Margot Robbie and Elizabeth Banks among others are doing this. However pulling off a project successfully even with your own company is still difficult and they need entire teams behind them.

I suspect with Kirsten's addiction and her career not going anywhere for a while there, it would have become almost impossible to do that kind of thing. But she could start one now. She seems more active than ever and she has been promoting her work a lot so I think she is into it more than she has been in a while.

by Anonymousreply 8August 29, 2019 8:11 AM

I love KiKi. Her new show Becoming a God in Central Florida, she is basically playing Amber Atkins, if nothing went right for her since the pageant was canceled in Drop Dead Gorgeous. And she married Ugly Matt Damon!

by Anonymousreply 9August 29, 2019 8:13 AM

I never knew anything about her except that she was the little girl from Interview with the Vampire, but 15+ years ago I recall Perez Hilton and the like trashing her constantly, mainly making fun of her teeth.

I became a fan of hers when I saw Melancholia. She’s very talented. I saw Marie Antoinette only after I saw Melancholia—so, very late—and missing the zeitgeist, I thought the movie was sort of a big nothing and yet Dunst still had a magnetic screen presence.

Someone with a lot of followers recently tweeted and got trending a magazine photo of PJ Harvey, Bjork and Tori Amos from the 90s and pointed out that none of them has won a single Grammy award.

Hopefully all these women, Dunst included, can come to terms with the reality that such awards are rewards for being popular and politically savvy within their respective industries, and not necessarily about talent or merit. Of course, everyone wants to be popular with peers. But when peers are Britney Spears and the people who profit off her mental illness, or, say, Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman (who is tremendously talented but who, as part of ‘the game’ has frozen her face in cement) and those who cast them, then that sort of shows what peers are looking for.

I really do like watching Dunst in movies. She’s good at playing coarse, good at playing charming, good at playing daft, good at romantic roles and tragic ones. She’s just a good actor, and honestly I find that a million times more interesting than if she were an A-list leading actress who did dumb romantic comedies most of the time, had her face surgically mutilated to look “beautiful,” and then had makeup artists uglify her to play a villain so that she could win a damned Oscar for being “brave” enough to have a makeup artist uglify her. It really is a game. So dumb.

by Anonymousreply 10August 29, 2019 8:14 AM

She seems like she's worked fairly steady, so one could do worse. She's just aged out of young beauty roles now occupied by Margot Robbie & became a suburban mom-type like Reese Witherspoon. For someone who started as a kid actor (and that generally never ends well), she seems like she's done alright.

by Anonymousreply 11August 29, 2019 8:26 AM

Interview with the Vampire, Spider-Man, Melancholia, Bring It On, Marie Antoinette, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Hidden Figures, The Beguiled...

She’s not typecast! That’s something she should appreciate. Based on her resume, she seems like the type who would get bored with redundant roles. I think of her as a high-level character actor, and I think that that suits her.

by Anonymousreply 12August 29, 2019 8:41 AM

I hadn't thought too much about her until watching ALL GOOD THINGS and realizing she was easily the best part of that movie.

She was fantastic in that season of Fargo. The whole cast was spot-on. Damn, I miss that show.

I remember her nickname used to be Drunkst on some blog, maybe Dlisted.

by Anonymousreply 17August 30, 2019 5:42 PM

As everyone else has said, her performance in Melancholia was next level fantastic. I can't think of many performances better. She was also wonderful in Fargo. I have a gut feeling she's going to be a great character actress for the next thirty years. Her lack of beauty might come in handy as she ages.

by Anonymousreply 18August 30, 2019 5:43 PM

I always loved Kirsten; it seems like she's too hard on herself. It's a tough industry and it seems her coping isn't that great (hence her addictions, et cet). Loved her in Interview With the Vampire, Jumanji, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Bring It On, Hidden Figures... I even still think of her when I say "Louisville" (lul-vill) because of that dumb movie Elizabethtown.

Granted I wasn't thrilled about her as Mary Jane at first in the Spider-Man movies but it's grown on me. But the kiss in the rain is iconic. She has a lot to be proud of.

Lars Von Trier is a psychopath. I feel badly for her because she was just next-level fantastic in MELANCHOLIA, but also that maybe it wasn't worth having to work with someone like Von Trier even if it did result in that performance.

by Anonymousreply 26August 30, 2019 8:37 PM

Plebeians only remember her for Bring It On, but there are plenty of cinephiles who appreciate her for all the other projects she's done over the years. There was a time in the mid-2000s where her teen movies sort of defined her for a generation of people, but Melancholia elevated her reputation, and led to her being on Fargo, which she also got critical notice for. It's obvious that even as a child she was talented—her performance in Interview with the Vampire was incredibly nuanced for someone her age. I loved her in The Virgin Suicides as well. I truly believe she will be regarded as one of the best actresses of her generation, even if she doesn't get all the spotlight for it during her lifetime.

by Anonymousreply 27August 30, 2019 8:38 PM

She is hard on herself, R19. I think this explains the open secret of her alcoholism which mandated that rehab stint for "depression" some years back. I know there were rumors she was a heroin addict, but I've never really believed that. I think she was just a drunk. I know she's been a chain smoker for years. Not sure if she quit after having her baby.

by Anonymousreply 31August 30, 2019 8:46 PM

I also liked her in The Cat's Meow but that's when her "issues" peaked and I'm SURE the director was massively sympathetic.

by Anonymousreply 35August 30, 2019 9:43 PM

She's not beautiful, but she's pretty, and she looks like a real person. She's very easy to cast because of that, and has a wide range besides--she's a fine actress.

I think she's had a better career than, say, Diane Lane, who IS genuinely beautiful, and who is also an excellent actress. Dunst has consistently been able to find good parts (which is something that Lane has not always been able to do).

by Anonymousreply 36August 30, 2019 9:46 PM

She’s a great actress. She takes trials in what she picks and always delivers a solid performance, and its true she can look pretty or plain. She was great in Fargo and she’s great on In Becoming a God. It would be great to see her get some recognition.

On a personal note, I saw her all by herself walking her dog and she smiled at me.

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2019 11:20 PM

Great tit job.

by Anonymousreply 38August 30, 2019 11:24 PM

I think it's always hard to make the transition from child actress (to teen starlet) to serious adult thespian. And even if you DO manage to make the transition (which she did), there are always new girls coming in to take those roles from you. She would have been just as good in half these roles that J-Law and Emma Stone and Margot Robbie have done (and the generation just above them)...... it must be frustrating when you have twice as much experience as these girls, and a much stronger body of work but they're simply... 'newer'. So you get cast aside.

Having said that, I think she's being harsh on herself because she's managed it better than most of her peers. Only Natalie Portman from her generation did better. Christina Ricci's work as a teenager is better than anything most 30-year-olds have on their CV (and better than Dunst's and Portman's teen work)... but why is Anne Hathaway getting every single offer and Ricci isn't? Gabby Hoffman and Natasha Lyonne BARELY were able to scrape back to good TV roles. Dunst always worked and got leading roles to boot. That's something.

I think she's right, a lot of people DO think of her as 'the girl from Bring It On'. But at least they think of her! Alicia Silverstone, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, and whoever else her competition was at the time would KILL for a Melancholia, Fargo, All Good Things, Hidden Figures, The Beguiled, or their own Showtime show.

She was fantastic in All Good Things R40. I think that's when people started taking her more seriously, as she'd mainly done frivolous comedies for most of the 2000s. She got Melancholia right after that, which gave her further credit because it was a Lars Von Trier project, but above that, she delivered the goods.

by Anonymousreply 42August 30, 2019 11:34 PM

by Anonymousreply 43August 30, 2019 11:44 PM

I think she's had a fairly enviable career, especially for a former child star. She hasn't and, likely, never will get the big huge blockbuster movies or become the world's most famous star, but her work is always interesting and commendable and, at the end of the day, these things keep a person employed until their dying day. I don't think she's going anywhere anytime soon and I'm happy about that. I always know that, when I see a film with her in it, it's going to be a little different or quirky or stray from the multiplex blockbuster template.

Reese Witherspoon was like this up until Legally Blonde and then she did all those crummy rom coms for a decade before starting to try to play interesting roles again.

by Anonymousreply 44August 30, 2019 11:48 PM

She has done a blockbuster r44, she was in Spider-Man. She has an interesting and varied body of work.

And it should read RISKS* not trials. Good god autocorrect.

She was good in Bring It On.

by Anonymousreply 46August 30, 2019 11:53 PM

She first really popped for me in Cat's Meow as Marion Davies, she was just twice as alive as anyone else on the screen. Superb in Melancholia, she really deserved an Oscar nomination for that. I've liked every performance I've seen of hers, even when she's in nondescript roles, like the one in Eternal Sunshine. She's just interesting to watch.

by Anonymousreply 47August 31, 2019 12:01 AM

I adore her. I actually ran into her in person once in Toluca Lake. We were both buying wine at Vendome. She was so tiny in person and just had her hair in a ponytail. She looked very fit and cute, but did not register as a celebrity to me. She asked me about a bottle of red and I just giggled and told her that I did not work at the store. She said "I know, but you seem to know what you are picking out". I told her - not so much. I really didn't have a clue. Vendome has bottles that I have never seen in my life (it's not Ralphs LOL). Her voice resonated with me and I did not figure it out until I was in my car driving home.

I think that her career speaks for itself and I love her in pretty much everything that she has ever been cast. Of course, I told all of my friends about the "event" and Googled her address to find out that she owned a fancy townhouse around the corner from the store. It was a fun adventure.

by Anonymousreply 48August 31, 2019 12:04 AM

I've met and interacted with her, and she's a very kind/intelligent/interesting person.

That said, I don't have any pity for woman bitching about not getting opportunities in Hollywood.

The woman constantly working (Bullock/Witherspoon/Kidman) are buying rights to books, producing, paying people to develop scripts and/or are writing their own scripts, and spending a SHITLOAD of money to get projects off the ground or constantly networking to get funding. After 25, you need to start developing your own projects or you're basically at the mercy of "Hollywood," which means that you'll never get work.

I've not had great interactions with Reese, but that bitch is always working...she's always in meetings, always reading books to see if rights should be bought that would result in marketable projects, always reviewing scripts, always WRITING fucking scripts in fucking Scrivener even if they go nowhere, just to better understand the craft.

If you want to work in Hollywood, you need to create your own work. That's the only law. No waiting around.

by Anonymousreply 49August 31, 2019 3:28 AM

R44 is definitely confused. Kirsten has had numerous blockbuster movies: Interview with Vampire, Jumanji, Bring It On, and Spiderman 1–3. She's peppered in numerous indie features throughout all of these that made nothing or next to nothing of course, but that's how it is for most working actors. She's done some intriguing projects and given consistently good (and great) performances.

by Anonymousreply 50August 31, 2019 3:33 AM

Dunst has put in the basic promotional work yes but she's never been the shark-like, heavily ambitious make-it-at-any-cost type like her peers (Witherspoon, Hathaway, Kidman, others mentioned). She's way laid back, lives a very laid-back life out in the Valley with her family and non-celeb circle and I've always thought it held her back a bit. Healthier life yes. but hurts the profile needed by today's actresses to stay afloat on the high A-list. Can't see her ever doing Ig influencing or shilling a brand, for example.

Dating so many of her co-stars hasn't helped her stability either, although I don't believe she ever dated anyone for image or pr. And she was rehabbed for heroin r28, not just booze, back in the 00s. hankfully her family has always been close around her and dragged her to rehab early on before thing spiraled out.

r38 her tits are real, those are hers. In fact she's one of the very few her age, and at her professional/fame level. to have not succumbed to the knife yet.

He probably treats her really well. There's no way he's packing.

by Anonymousreply 62August 31, 2019 4:22 AM

Plemons is very talented and seems to be fairly nice, but not fully sold on their relationship and I don't think they'll end up married. They've already been engaged for three years and had the baby, and no wedding.

I think she was very disappointed that things didn't work out with Hedlund, after spending five years with him during her prime years, and he ended up splitting off. She was pushing into her late 30s then and facing starting over romantically, she desperately wanted kids and along came Plemons. Time will tell. They seem more friends than lovers, and KD has always been romantic (read: lusty at times) at heart.

by Anonymousreply 63August 31, 2019 4:23 AM

I think R63 hit the nail on the head. I'm just guessing, but it didn't appear she and Hedlund had the most functional relationship. Plemons is probably a nice guy and is good to her. She also might like the security of knowing that he would be a complete idiot to leave her.

by Anonymousreply 64August 31, 2019 4:28 AM

She seems to be doing some producing, or at least getting paid for it. She’s listed as a producer for her new Showtime show.

Her tits are certainly not fake. Those are natural tits after having a baby. She’s probably still nursing and she will probably need a breast lift after she’s had all the kids she wants or they’ll be to her knees by 40.

She’s had a great career even if she never makes another film, or gets a nomination or award. She’s been:

in several blockbusters (the Supermans)

in a cult film (Drop Dead Gorgeous)

in an art house hit about an icon (Marie Antoinette)

twice named as one of People’s 50 Most Beautiful People (at ages 13 and 20)

by Anonymousreply 66August 31, 2019 4:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 67August 31, 2019 4:52 AM

She is 37 but still looks like a beautiful Nordic goddess.

She's 8 years younger than Amy Adams, who is still portraying women in their late 20s (see "sharp objects").

by Anonymousreply 68August 31, 2019 4:55 AM

r68 = Helen Keller

by Anonymousreply 69August 31, 2019 5:05 AM

The Amy Adams comparison is funny given that Amy had a minor role in Drop Dread Gorgeous, where Kristen was the star. Amy's career has gone far beyond Kirsten's at this point, but I prefer Kirsten as an actress and think she chooses riskier projects. Amy is rather pedestrian, but I suppose that most ex-Mormons are.

by Anonymousreply 70August 31, 2019 5:06 AM

Dunst still looks pretty good, she'd outshine most other women strolling Ventura any given weekend. But she has let herself go lately. Even before she got pregnant she was gaining weight and looking schlubby in public. Not a way to compete for roles at her age in Hollywood.

She's made changes, sold the fancy home her parents lived in, in the Valley, and sold her Tribeca pad last yr. Also dropped her longtime high-priced stylist to go with one of her unknown friends. I wonder if she's hurting for cash. Did see "Satan" Huvane with her at her walk of fame ceremony, so apparently he's still on payroll. He's not cheap.

by Anonymousreply 71August 31, 2019 5:21 AM

Sorry, but she's really unattractive. She was 'cute' enough when she was young and fresh faced, but she has terrible features and uneven bone structure and her eyes seems to be spreading to the sides of her face.

by Anonymousreply 72August 31, 2019 5:27 AM
Even before she got pregnant she was gaining weight and looking schlubby in public.

by Anonymousreply 73August 31, 2019 5:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 74August 31, 2019 5:32 AM

She works steadily R71 so I'd be surprised if she's hurting for money. With Jesse's income combined, they have to have a fair amount of cash. She has gained a bit of weight but I honestly think she carries it well. The only thing that I've noticed is her skin seems a bit rough lately; her face looks dried out and tired in a lot of photos. She's been a heavy smoker for many years, which may have something to do with it, and you can also hear how that has roughened up her voice a bit. She's a fair-skinned blonde of German heritage too, and so many years in the California sun will take their toll unless you take precautions with sunscreen, hats, etc.

Love Kirsten. Her performance in Interview with the Vampire is one of the best debuts I've ever seen.

Starring in Bring It On and Drop Dead Gorgeous alone has given her a legacy. She shouldn't be ashamed of Bring It On. It's aged well and many of the topics in the film still resonate today.

I agree that she will be a great character actress. I think she is going to have another surge in her career.

Nope, R57, her tits are not real. Spot the difference in the same dress: the 'before' photo on the left - droopy, pancakey tits (normal, probably) Vs. the 'after' photo on the right - suddenly melon-type, perfectly round tits.

She went under the knife and had silicon injected. It's obvious.

In fact, she probably had multiple surgical boob jobs. Because here's a photo of her original chest: almost flat and droopy. She wore a bandana bikini - because there wasn't even much breast to cover up.

I think she is pretty, she was really something in The Virgin Suicides

by Anonymousreply 90August 31, 2019 9:46 AM

Without the article I would have assumed she put that busy and toxic Hollywood lifestyle behind her and just works when she wants to and is interested in a project that comes her way for whatever cosmic reason.

I think she looks like a former drug addict who avoids any trigger to prevent a relapse (and that includes taking pills, or other ways, to lose weight for a TV or movie project).

Jesse Plemmons is a great actor like Philip Seymour Hoffman

Sometimes I feel like I have to be an alien from another planet. I just don’t get people—which is most people and so this is definitely my personal problem as a not-quite-human thing—who reduce everything down to prettiness and net worth. Honest to God, I don’t get it. I really appreciate Dunst as an actor and while I also do like Amy Adams as an actor, Dunst’s unique appearance makes her more interesting to watch onscreen for me. Adams is very generically pretty to such an extreme that I didn’t recognize her as an actress for a long time because she is just so blandly pretty she sort of disappears. Dunst is more nuanced. As for her boyfriends or husbands, I just don’t care. Most people aren’t conventionally perfect looking. I don’t get why the public has to sort everyone according to their looks and complain endlessly anytime they decide one person is supposedly “superior” to another lookswise. Are we really that simple? Does everyone here choose all their friends solely according to how they look in photos next to them? It is *so* fucking weird and foreign a thought to me. If Dunst (or anyone) finds someone who is compatible with her and with whom she likes spending her time and wants to build a life with, who the fuck should care? It has nothing to do with her job.

I know I am going to be eviscerated for this rant, but I am just so freaking exhausted by everyone reducing this great big expansive life down to worshipping Barbie and Ken and harpooning anyone who doesn’t. Why???

by Anonymousreply 93August 31, 2019 11:36 AM

So much positivity in this thread. I guess Dunst now not only has a star on the Walk of Fame but she's also an unironic DL Fave.

R93 scoffs at other people for "reducing everything down to prettiness" - and then goes on to do exactly that by dissing Adams as "generically, blandly pretty to an extreme". Physician - heal thyself.

by Anonymousreply 95August 31, 2019 12:07 PM

And Adams did not disappear in e.g. "Doubt" - it was a very good performance of a neurotic character. She did not look "generically pretty" or like a "Barbie" there either - she looked just like a regular person. But she's a more facially evocative actress than Dunst - and in this case she deservedly has a better career.

It seems like they hire the same actresses for everything. I was watching Aquaman on HBO the other night and was surprised to see Nicole Kidman was in it.

by Anonymousreply 98August 31, 2019 12:30 PM

Read once that Kidman charges less than other actors of her renown, so she does a lot of quirky projects and just keeps working.

I do have a lot of respect for Reese Witherspoon, I completely believe she's a bitch, but I also remember that she bought *Gone Girl* for herself, but when David Fincher said he'd only direct if she weren't the lead, she said "Okay". She produced it with Fincher and made a pile of money off it, while snagging an AA nomination for *Wild*.

She also paid attention to her PR advisers when she got arrested--apologized ASAP and then did one little photo op after another. Fortunately, for her, she was already known for playing an entertaining bitch, so after the arrest pretty much destroyed her as America's Sweetheart, she had somewhere else to go. Meg Ryan wasn't able to make a similar switch--and she tried. The awful lip fillers didn't help.

by Anonymousreply 99August 31, 2019 7:48 PM

Kidman has paid a lot of money to assault her own face, but she is a reliably A-plus actor in my opinion, and one whose ubiquitousness does not bother me at all because she aces everything. I never really thought about it, but I put Kirsten Dunst in a similar league, along with Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet (whom I don’t see enough of).

I *really* admired Jennifer Lawrence’s performances in the Hunger Games and Winter’s Bone, but the overcasting and miscasting of her really nuked my interest in seeing her onscreen. To me, she was completely miscast—despite the acclaim and the awards—in Silver Linings Playbook; it was way beyond her emotional range, and I suspect Kirsten Dunst could have made that movie riveting.

by Anonymousreply 100August 31, 2019 7:56 PM

One little gem that that's often forgotten is a so bad its good lifetime movie '15 and Pregnant' that and 'All I Want To Do' which was another great group of actresses of that generation, but my favorites since Little Women. That was the last 'child' role she'd done and the Lifetime movie adds more camp along with Dick to her very full resume.

She's done too many extremely good projects from some of the aforementioned, and Virgin Suicides (she makes that movie), Drop Dead Gorgeous which had a stellar cast and is a cult classic, Fargo and Melancholia. Bring it On, and Crazy Beautiful and Spider Man were for me lesser work but in general not because of Dunst. I also absolutely loved her in Marie Antoinette, but she seemed to get critiqued more in her performances in Coppolas films most.

She has a HUGE body of work, some good, some great, some ok but few were really 'bad' so it's a bit crazy for her to criticize her drive in her work. I just wish she would get a better dermatologist at this point.

by Anonymousreply 101August 31, 2019 8:18 PM

R101 And has she ever turned in a poor performance, or only been a good performer in less-than-stellar movies?

by Anonymousreply 102August 31, 2019 8:20 PM

R102 "were for me lesser work but in general not because of Dunst"

Thought sufficient

by Anonymousreply 103August 31, 2019 8:32 PM

She'll stick around. She's reliable, never has much drama associated with her, and always turns in great performances. People like that work until they aren't physically able to anymore. I do wonder what the relationship with Plemmons is about. To me, it just seems like a security thing and there's nothing wrong with that. After a lot of bad relationships, you sometimes just want someone who's going to be there for you, be a friend, and not leave you. It doesn't matter if their "hot" or if the sex is the best ever or not. These things matter less as you age and I'm sure she had her fair share of hot guys and great sex when she was younger.

by Anonymousreply 104August 31, 2019 8:52 PM
I'm sure she had her fair share of ... great sex when she was younger.

I wouldn’t be so sure: “New survey: Most women are not satisfied with their sex lives”.
It doesn't matter if their "hot" or if the sex is the best ever or not. These things matter less as you age

They matter less, but they still matter. A good blowjob a day keeps the doctor away :)
“Sexual satisfaction, despite what some may think, is part of overall health. The benefits of sex go way beyond the obvious. Sex can boost your immunity and mood and decrease your stress level. Reaching an orgasm increases the benefits of sex even more, thanks to the release of the oxytocin and endorphins it triggers. These feel-good hormones contribute to relaxation, warmth and closeness, as well as helping fight pain and depression.”
These things matter less as you age and I'm sure she had her fair share of hot guys and great sex when she was younger.

She's barely 37, not 60. And has a history of chasing (and landing) a lot of hot tail. Her current squeeze is a radical departure from her well known norm (and it's spelled "Plemons" btw).

Doesn't mean its a bad relationship or not worthy of their time. Like others said, it's just not likely to last long term, seems to be a 'rest stop' thing for her. They have a kid - why not marry? I think he's also several years younger than her too.

by Anonymousreply 107September 1, 2019 12:41 AM

That pic at r97 - yikes! is that for real? Didn't realize Nicole had aged that much. Her face has a lot of lines and sun damage.

by Anonymousreply 108September 1, 2019 12:43 AM

Nicole Kidman is a great talent who has the most adventurous resume of any actress in film. But her face is a bit of a disaster. She's had much less surgical work done than people think, but the way styles herself and presents herself does her no favors. Her face is a mess of fillers and botox, but the real problem is her overly girly clothes and hairstyles. (wigs) She needs to go shorter and darker and have true makeunder. She'll do it for a role but is far less comfortable as herself. She has the same thin lips and gummy smile and pert nose and face as she always did. She just needs to return to red hair and uncover her freckles and curls and lay off the fillers. Then get a proper facelift and have it over with. One and done. All of these women who started with the Botox and fillers in their thirties look terrible by age 50. They aren't the noninvasive miracles they promised to be.

I adore Nicole as well; she's had a similar career to Kirsten in terms of alternating between mainstream flicks and more offbeat artsy stuff (Dogville, Killing of a Sacred Deer, etc.), though Nicole has had way more mainstream hits and is a bigger financial force in the industry--Kirsten is a lot more low-key. Both are great actresses. I do hope Kirsten doesn't go wild with cosmetic surgeries down the road though.

by Anonymousreply 110September 1, 2019 1:42 AM

Yeah, Nicole and Kirsten are both great actresses but I don't want Kirsten to fuck her face up like Nicole. Nicole was excellent in both Rabbit Hole and Boy Erased but the fillers and Botox undermine her strong performances.

by Anonymousreply 111September 1, 2019 1:56 AM

JEsse Plemons has a bad face but he’s such a good actor you almost don’t notice. I get why she ended up with him. He seems like he’s nice to her too.

I just can't get over her agreeing to the name Ennis for the baby.

by Anonymousreply 113September 1, 2019 2:06 AM

"Dunst also signed on as a producer, and had big hand in the casting of the show. One of her first ideas was to bring on her “Melancholia” co-star Alexander Skarsgård to play Krystal’s goofy, irresponsible husband. “I knew he was really funny and this would be fun for him,” she says. “Even on ‘Melancholia’ he was so fun and sweet, and he’s usually cast in more serious roles. People get to see him in a new light.”

For his part, Skarsgård has nothing but praise for his on-screen wife, who brings the humor no matter how serious the subject matter. “Kirsten is one of the funniest people I know,” he tells Variety. “On the set of ‘Melancholia,’ she had the cast and crew in stitches as the planet was about to be obliterated by a massive meteor and we laughed our way through the last gasp of a withering marriage in ‘On Becoming a God in Central Florida.’ I eagerly await the third chapter of our death and destruction themed collaboration, it’s gonna be a hoot!”
And you know this how since the official story is depression.

"official" stories are just that, what's put out by publicists. It was no big secret back in 2007-08 she was heavy into partying and drugs, was running around with Ledger the year before he died as well as Josh Hartnett at the peak of his habits. Every columnist in town (Lainey, Ted C) ran blinds about how out of control she was and that she was on the horse. Even Just Jared ran awful photo sets of her openly alluding to this.

You don't get dragged to Cirque Lodge by your father in the middle of the week for simple 'depression' - you set up with your local therapist in LA or do heavy outpatient tx if needed. She went to rehab.

r84 Jake was the real thing for her, not so sure for him. Prevailing wisdom is she was the last true gf he had before realizing his 'true leanings' and broke up w/her because of that.

by Anonymousreply 116September 1, 2019 4:36 PM

She may have had a boob job. Who cares? What does that have to do with her ability or inability to act?

She may have experimented with drugs, partied too hard, or dealt with an addiction when she was young. She may not have. She’s 37 now and she has a really impressive body of work and seems to stay out of the limelight and to be pretty well respected in the industry.

by Anonymousreply 117September 1, 2019 4:44 PM
Or how about she grew up, filled out, had a baby.

What are you even talking about, R116? Are you blind? That photo comparison of her [italic]obvious[/italic] surgical boob job @ R88 was BEFORE she had the baby. And she obviously didn’t “fill out” there - all her body parts & limbs had practically the same dimensions (waistline, thighs, calves, arms) in the same dress - only the boobs ‘magically’ inflated. In fact, she even looked more slim / gaunt in the 'later' photo (except for the silicone tits). Females with droopy, pancake tits (already in adult age) don’t magically develop a set of 'perfect melons' just a few years later (while the rest of the body becomes even thinner).
She may have had a boob job. Who cares?

Learn to follow threads, R117. People “care” when fangurls upthread haughtily claim @ R57: “her tits are real, those are hers. In fact [italic]she's one of the very few her age[/italic], and at her professional/fame level. [italic]to have not succumbed to the knife yet[/italic].”

When people make such laughable false claims - it’s normal to correct them. And she didn’t “may have had a boob job” - she obviously did. No need to make it sound like it’s not obvious.

You have to feel bad for her when it comes to recognition. Von Trier fucked her over with Melancholia with his big mouth and then Ryan Murphy fucked her over with the Globes (Gaga did NOT deserve) and Emmys (Paulson did)

by Anonymousreply 123September 1, 2019 10:34 PM

THANK YOU R123. I was so angry when Gaga won the Golden Globe over Kirsten, and all of Gaga's psycho fans ripped me to shreds over it. I watched AHS Hotel and Gaga was wooden and fucking awful in it; the fact that her performance won over Kirsten's nuanced work in Fargo was appalling and further proof that awards shows are rigged PR garbage.

by Anonymousreply 129September 1, 2019 11:21 PM

There is a great thread on here from when I first joined DL about 4 years ago. Some really thoughtful appreciation and great appraisal of her work. She is better than so many actresses that get ALL the accolades and work that it IS kind of shocking. She is definitely the actress of choice for guys and girls from 30 to 40. She's the white Regina King, ha. So much great work in a lot of interesting projects. And the best thing in anything less than good. I do think Kirsten is unremarkable to look at and unmemorable in that way. But she mesmerizes with pure reality while we're watching her.

Jennifer Lawrence is similar, but Dunst is a much better and more versatile actress than Lawrence. Dunst has great taste in material, but lost out on some of the great bait parts that might have won her more acclaim. She had a time off to get fucked up and come back to just as good work. Lawrence peaked in her first three films and she is talented. She is a river - Kirsten is the sea. I love her. She'll been bringing us murky interesting illuminating and SURPRISING characterizations for as long as she wants to work.

by Anonymousreply 137September 2, 2019 2:50 AM

About 200 million people have commented on Gaga's ridiculous look, walk and attitude and DiCaprio's priceless jerk reaction R136. I don't watch the golden fucking globes but everyone on the planet saw that clip/GIF. Why would you first see it here?

Leo's a pig in real life with no gentleman quality at all. There's nothing sensitive about him. Gaga's the near talentless wanna be that we've seen parading herself everywhere for the last 10 years. She never looks great. She's a hideous poseur.

Kirsten Dunst is a grande talent and a real woman. A great actress before a star. She was wildly addicted to heroin for quite some time. Gaga periodically suffers from "fibromyalgia."

by Anonymousreply 138September 2, 2019 3:05 AM

"She refused to lose weight for The Beguiled and was kind of a tub-a-lub in that movie which certainly didn't advance her career."

by Anonymousreply 139September 2, 2019 3:06 AM

R138, I prefer Kirsten (an actress that I love) to Gaga anyday and I hate Dicaprio. I only saw this here because I am not a huge fan of either of the latter stars mentioned. But I do think that Gaga looks good there....just an opinion. I have seen her look far worse.

Well she ain't going anywhere thanks to A Star Is Born. We can blame Bradley Cooper for that.

by Anonymousreply 145September 2, 2019 10:42 AM

I don’t get Dicaprio at all. He is three years older than I am and so he was a heartthrob for me back around Titanic and Romeo—now I look back at him and I think it was just the floppy hair that did it for me—but I never liked his acting. I think it’s the way he speaks more than anything, but I always find him distracting in movies.

I came across this graphic and as I absorbed the information I became disgusted with him. He is 44 and he has never dated a woman older than 25. At 44 he started dating a 20 year old. That to me is some sick shit. Since I was 35 or so I have barely been able to hold a conversation with anyone under 25 because they’re so immature. Twenty to me is like a child. Yes, I know that it’s legal. My issue is that this guy is halfway to 88 years old and he’s choosing to bang girls who got out of high school two years ago. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 146September 2, 2019 11:23 AM

R145 She was very good in A Star is Born. The movie itself was as sophisticated as a Lifetime movie, but she did stand out. It actually feels kind of like the sort of movie Dunst would have landed years ago because the movie itself isn’t very good but it’s a good vehicle for a strong performance. And in this case, Gaga gave a better performance than Dunst probably could have thanks to her musical abilities.

by Anonymousreply 147September 2, 2019 11:27 AM

r146 Yeah, he's gross and people will slowly cotton on to that as he grows even older. And look at how the women all look like each other. Nothing wrong with having a type, but he obviously wants to telegraph something to the world.

by Anonymousreply 148September 2, 2019 11:44 AM

He wants to fuck barely legal model girls. I’m not sure how that is different then a pig like Trump, or from the 60-something gay men who are serial twink hunters.

by Anonymousreply 149September 2, 2019 11:48 AM

R146 I grew up in that era as well and i'm not quite sure how he's managed to finagle this reputation as a 'serious actor'. He works with Scorsese a lot and it seems that has already made him some thoroughbred talent in people's eyes, despite the fact that he has very few great performances, and a lot of bad ones to boot.

by Anonymousreply 150September 2, 2019 11:53 AM

R150 He was a teen pinup who raked in cash during Titanic and R+J. People banked on him and he obviously navigated the Hollywood system to endear himself to the most powerful people in the business. Given his apparent sex life, I would guess he has been involved in many debaucherous high-powered Hollywood antics from a young age, probably from the time he was on Growing Pains, and he probably always has just played along with anything.

A TV director once told me that TV actors most often are cast to play characters who are a lot like them in real life because unlike in film, TV actors have no real time to get inside a character—they’re handed a script and they play the character on the page. I think Leo’s Growing Pains character was a wild runaway teenager who got into a lot of trouble all the time. That was his intro to Hollywood. I have no evidence to go on but I would not be surprised if teen Leo jumped into a Bryan Singer-type environment with high-powered execs and let the good times roll and never looked back. Sex, drugs, it’s all good fun—and if producers saw Leo as a goodtime boy with sex appeal, then of course they would want to sell that same appeal to audiences. Win win win all around! Now that he’s out of his 30s, exclusively dating girls under 25 is becoming gross, but it’s par for the course for a whole lot of old rich men.

by Anonymousreply 151September 2, 2019 12:03 PM
A TV director once told me that TV actors most often are cast to play characters who are a lot like them in real life

That actually applies to (not all, but many) A-list film actors too. Jennifer Lawrence mostly plays just versions of herself - loud, brash, lumberjack type females who can swing a sledge-hammer. Tom Cruise plays cocky, over-excitable guys going through breakdowns. Brad Pitt plays masculine, laid-back cool guys. Angelina Jolie plays stealthy psychos. Christian Bale plays magnetic psychos. Channing Tatum plays affable hicks. Etc.

by Anonymousreply 155September 2, 2019 1:37 PM

The director who told me that worked primarily on Northern Exposure for many years.

by Anonymousreply 156September 2, 2019 2:17 PM

R155 Kirsten Dunst plays cunning, melancholic, mentally ill, bubbly high school friendly all-American girl cheerleaders and self-indulgent French queens...

And Nicole Kidman plays naifs, ingenues, sociopathic murderers, depressed writers, devastated mothers, ambiguously predatory cult member mothers, S&M addicts, and affable witches (twice!).

Some actors have incredible ranges.

by Anonymousreply 157September 2, 2019 2:21 PM

R155, more more more! Give me more!

by Anonymousreply 158September 2, 2019 2:55 PM

Nicole would look perfect if she just got a light (fake) tan, wore brown mascara instead of harsh black, didn’t make her brows so arched, stopped over-lining her lips, and got a duller, darker hair color. Her face is OK.

She's clearly underrated and I've always enjoyed her performances. She'll keep doing great work and good for her for keeping it real in her life despite an early start in that cesspit.

It's also clear that she's tough. She's willing to go to casting calls and audition for directors despite a pretty impressive resume and I never get a sense of an ego out of control, like Witherspoon, Roberts, or Portman. She's a better actor than all of them.

by Anonymousreply 160September 2, 2019 3:03 PM

Oh boo hoo. She got to have Jake Gyllenhaal eat her out. She's not working at Trader Joe's sacking groceries. Get over it!

by Anonymousreply 161September 2, 2019 3:06 PM

You need to get over your envy, R161. Someone asked her and she answered honestly. Truly you're projecting if you saw her response as whining.

by Anonymousreply 162September 2, 2019 3:08 PM

I wonder what her motivation is. IMDB shows that she has acted in 82 projects and has produced only three, including this new one on which she is an executive producer.

Witherspoon seems to be in it more for the business and the money than the acting—not that I can be sure of that, but she does develop a lot and as someone above said, she produced a movie she wanted to star in but the director said no, and instead of getting another director, she opted out of the acting and cashed the check. That’s fine; it is “show business,” after all. But I get the sense Dunst is more interested in the performance aspect than the business aspect, at least until now.

Some random thoughts-

Is Kirsten’s baby on the show her own?

Jesse looks like her family, and Kirsten, for that matter. Fair, almond eyes, light hair, tendency to gain weight. Sometimes sticking with your own type creates a cuter kid than the more well known “2 polar opposites formula.” Don’t for a second think that it doesn’t cross every potential mother’s mind.

She’s prettier than ever on the new show. She plays younger and the curvy body fits the character. She’s definitely not fat. Just not model thin anymore. After 30, Face or fanny, just like Catherine Deneuve said. Even Taylor Swift is taking that advice. Kirsten resembles Cheryl Tiegs. Definitely not just an everyday person.

As for work, compare/contrast her with Claire Danes. I’d say it’s definitely worth pursuing these new platinum level TV shows and rounding out with interesting movies here and there these days. Like contemporaries Elisabeth Moss(Handmaiden) And Reese(Big Little Lies) The game has changed. Even young actresses aren’t getting everything. Anne Hathaway is in cheezy stuff like The Hustle and Margot Robbie is playing a fictitious character in a Lifetimeish movie about sexual harassment. Not exactly high art...

by Anonymousreply 164September 2, 2019 3:20 PM

And don’t forget producing is hard work. I mean, it would be like saying to yourself, ok, in addition to my current responsibilities at work, I’ll also be Ginny in billing at the same time!

by Anonymousreply 165September 2, 2019 3:24 PM

I know she’s German but she looks typically Scandinavian to me. She’s not similarly asiatic looking, but there’s something Bjorky about her face.

by Anonymousreply 166September 2, 2019 3:29 PM

The European gene pool is like Heinz 57 varieties, despite the Nazi claims of the 40s.

by Anonymousreply 167September 2, 2019 3:37 PM

Yep, R167. Very curious, that. Celts supposedly came from Central Europe to the British Isles. The dark-haired “black Irish” of Ireland’s west coast are most closely related to Basques of Spain and France. Spanish people are European mixed with North African and Middle Eastern (making them generally Mediterranean). The UK is interestingly its own ethnic group according to Ancestry DNA, but the ethnicity is a hybrid of Scandinavians, Normans (French Celts?), Germans and Romans. Scandinavians are in the U.S. stereotyped as blond with blue eyes, but there are Bjorks (Sami?), Renee Zellwegers (Lapps?), and people who look like they could be from India, and all are considered natives of Scandinavia. There’s no “purity.” Everyone migrates.

by Anonymousreply 168September 2, 2019 3:45 PM

Agreed R143. I had forgotten about the show starting and this thread reminded me. Watched all three episodes last night and she is fantastic in it.

I was excited to see Beth Ditto of The Gossip (and solo) fame.

Interesting to see the directions careers (and lives, alas) have moved in since this photo!

R170 Dead, Star, (Who is that?), Bravo

by Anonymousreply 171September 2, 2019 9:51 PM

Dunst is a little Claire Dansey. Both are “unconventional beauties” who have not broken out as A-list movie stars exactly, and yet they kind of are anyway. Danes has pulled off being a teen TV star with a cult following, Juliet, a strange autistic woman (Temple Grandin), a fallen star (Stardust), a worried daughter (The Hours), a dangerously crazy genius (Homeland), Cosette.

Danes and Dunst never come immediately to mind when I think of great actresses, but when they do come to mind I realize they are among the greatest alive.

by Anonymousreply 172September 2, 2019 9:58 PM

That is Amy Adams.

by Anonymousreply 173September 2, 2019 9:58 PM

Somebody go get the ass fucking gifs: this thread has been invaded by FRAUs.

by Anonymousreply 174September 2, 2019 9:58 PM

R171, your “Who is That?” is Amy Adams!

by Anonymousreply 175September 2, 2019 10:13 PM

Are there really people who've never seen Drop Dead Gorgeous? Do yourself a favor.

by Anonymousreply 176September 2, 2019 10:15 PM

R175 Oh. I never recognize her face. It’s so weird.

by Anonymousreply 177September 2, 2019 10:17 PM

Er, her face isn’t weird. It’s weird that I never recognize her.

by Anonymousreply 178September 2, 2019 10:17 PM

The pageant dancing scene in episode two was amazing, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 179September 2, 2019 10:24 PM

Agreed, R179!

by Anonymousreply 180September 2, 2019 10:26 PM

I love that Drop Dead Gorgeous has become a bonafide cult classic now. No one seemed to see it in theaters when it came out and it got awful (and undeserved) reviews, but people seem to love it now. I also love seeing so many of the talented stars of that movie went on to even bigger things. It was the first time I ever saw Allison Janney and look at her now - she's got an Oscar and everything.

by Anonymousreply 181September 2, 2019 10:27 PM

Is Théodore Pellerin gay? His dancing in episode three of On Becoming a God is one of the gayest looking things I’ve seen. If it’s acting, he’s a great actor.

by Anonymousreply 182September 2, 2019 10:53 PM

Looks like he has a decent bulge in the pool scene.

Her mom is half Swedish. Maternal grandmother is from northern MN (same as Hedlund's Swedish fam, something I always felt they found in common).

She and Jesse played corn fed Minnesotans in the second season of Fargo, both convincingly so.

by Anonymousreply 192September 5, 2019 5:52 PM

I don't mind Dunst, she's ok. But her eyes often look tired and half-lidded. I think it might be a genetic thing, the structure of her eye-lids.

But it makes her face less expressive: like she hasn't slept the night before or took some sleeping pills before the shoot.

by Anonymousreply 193September 5, 2019 6:01 PM

R192 She has human teeth. You expect her to have lab-made ones like everyone else in Hollywood. Funny that you can’t tell the difference.

by Anonymousreply 194September 5, 2019 6:26 PM

I don't know what's funnier: that you took R192 at face value, or that the only thing you attempted to defend was her teeth.

by Anonymousreply 195September 5, 2019 7:22 PM

Kirsten always looks great in Rodarte, but I think the sisters custom-make the dresses for her specifically. I think they are very close friends.

by Anonymousreply 196September 5, 2019 9:23 PM

I love Kirsten, she has a deep reservoir of talent while remaining personally bland and inarticulate. The best actors are most often this way. But it's time to ditch the blonde hair Kiki. She looks 50 years old and it does nothing for her. She's not the hot chick and her face won't have a renaissance like Jessica Lange. She needs to mature her look to match her face.

OMG REMEMBER when she and Jake were together? They should've had babies about ten years ago and they could have avoided all their issues. She could've been the prototypical Millenial Mom and he could've been the ultimate Hollywood DILF breeding half jewish, half swedish/nordic 100% All American babies. Now he's doing a Broadway Show that only sells 60 percent of its seats and she's selling stories about how Hollywood never "realized her potential."

You never know what you've got 'til it's gone.

Lizzo says...#TRUTHHURTS

That said, Seawall is great and you should go see it (it's Jake's monologue play he does with some British dude)

by Anonymousreply 199September 6, 2019 2:05 AM

There's just one little problem: Jake isn't into women.

by Anonymousreply 200September 6, 2019 2:42 AM
They should've had babies about ten years ago and they could have avoided all their issues.

Um, I think they had certain issues that there was no way to avoid. Babies would never have begun to fix it.

by Anonymousreply 201September 6, 2019 2:42 AM

At this point in time, even your Great Aunt Edna in Bumfucke has figured out that Jake is a pole-smoking cockrider.
