I had the misfortune to share a flight with him from LA to London. He was virtually unrecognizable with long, gray, scraggly hair, a five-day beard, and baggy sweats. But, just in case, he had the flight attendants make an announcement to the entire plane that he was to be left alone, and no looky-loos should cross the threshold into Upper Class for autographs. Fine with me. Two nights later in London and he and his wife were seated two seats away from me at the National Theatre. No one recognized him or approached him (well, I recognized him from the airplane, but I didn't say anything). At the interval he created a huge fuss, demanding to speak with the house manager and to be taken to the VIP lounge so he could enjoy his privacy, away from the pesky autograph hounds who were ignoring him in droves. The house manager explained, quite politely, that the theatre didn't have a VIP lounge. Selleck asked where they put the Queen (the one on the throne, not him) when she came to see a play. The manager replied that she sometimes stayed in her seat, but often went to the bar with everyone else. Selleck continued fuming and berating the manager, the management, and the theatre until the bell rang for everyone to return to their seats. When he left, the whole crowd was asking each other, "Who was that?" When I told them it was Tom Selleck no one believed me.

If anyone cares, the play was Candide, the show was fantastic, and I never saw Tom Selleck again. Nor do I care to.
