Rain today (cue the jokes). At least the main two courts have roofs (are you seeing this, Roland Garros?)

by Anonymousreply 4August 28, 2019 3:58 PM

The amount of eye candy on display has now taken a MAJOR hit. Porna Coric withdrew. Dimitrov through to the third round with a walkover.

Get well soon Borna. :(

by Anonymousreply 5August 28, 2019 4:01 PM

The other tennis threads continually get made subscriber-only, then no one posts in them anymore. You'd think whoever is in charge of this site would get a clue. Another one will be started.

I'm worried that Nadal has a total cakewalk to the final now that his side of the draw collapsed. What a massacre yesterday of the Next Gen. And Coric joins the losers by defaulting to Dimitrov. Surprisingly, Zverev won, but of course he went 5 sets to do it.

I really wonder why organizers put Venus-Svitolina on Armstrong and Pliskova's match on Ashe today...

by Anonymousreply 9August 28, 2019 4:51 PM

R9 I wonder if it has something to do with Serena already headlining the night session on Ashe? But then not everyone would have a ticket to both the day and night sessions.

It is perplexing to imagine them having a meeting and deciding that the match more deserving of the main showcourt was Pliskbot vs some qualifier Georgian scrub with an annoying grunt (rather than American legend and 7 time slam winner Venus in imperious form against a top 5 player).

by Anonymousreply 10August 28, 2019 5:23 PM

Perhaps someone who still has permission to post in the other thread can link this new thread.

by Anonymousreply 11August 28, 2019 6:02 PM

I just checked stubhub. $25 tickets to Ashe this evening available. They're crappy seats, but they're half the price of a grounds pass ticket.

by Anonymousreply 12August 28, 2019 6:20 PM

It's so unfair that granny serena is playing at night again! it's totally rigged for her!

R13 She's a mother! You can't expect her play during the day while her child is awake and needs her.

by Anonymousreply 17August 28, 2019 6:54 PM

Not just Borna, R5--with the departure of FAA, Hurkacz, Harris, Krajinovic, Fognini, Djere, Giron, Eubanks, Sousa, Pella, Humbert, Tsonga, Thiem, Escobedo, Khachanov and PHH from just the first round, we're left with bleeding eyesores Sandgren, Kyrgios and Opelka.

by Anonymousreply 18August 28, 2019 6:55 PM

and? Murray always gets preferential scheduling at Wimbledon

Federer and Nadal often get preferential scheduling everywhere

it's not hot or sunny right now in NYC so it's not a big deal

IS IT ME or are some of the guys wearing their shorts shorter? watching the lopez and fritz match the other day and lopez ass and legs looked their usual spectacular see thru his shorts self, but even fritz legs looked bigger and more muscular? perhaps gaining leg size as he is getting more mature? then their was i think his name is gurin, curin or something like that and he too had thick muscular legs and a ass to match...

NICE!... speaking of men and their bodies, ONCE AGAIN, YET AGAIN, ole johnny mac is going on about the male players and their bodies.. last night it was about nadal! how intimidating he must be for the other player to see him across the net with his sleeveless shirt, build and body and blah, blah, blah... what does nadal weigh 150 pounds? lol! real intimidating!..nadal's body is a weird sort in that when he's in action or flexing his arms for instance look muscular indeed, however, when he's not doing anything his arms don't show much muscle at all! weird!...and he still has a slight layer of loose fat in his lower abs too.. you would think he wouldn't have any body fat on him for how hard he trains... just saying..

by Anonymousreply 26August 28, 2019 7:47 PM

[5] Elina Svitolina def. Venus, 6-4 6-4.

Granny put up a valiant fight though, saving 5 or 6 match points in a gargantuan 16-minute long game and forcing Svitolina to serve it out. With her body in decline, she will continue to struggle against these elite counterpunchers though who grind her to death.

It would be amazing though if Sloane, Carolina Garcia, Kerber, Muguruza, or any of these other girls failing to put in the hard yards had one ounce of the fight she possesses on court.

by Anonymousreply 29August 28, 2019 8:33 PM

Did anyone see the Federer match? Did he just shit the bed in the first set like he did on Mon?

by Anonymousreply 30August 28, 2019 8:34 PM

yes R30, he lost the first set. He lives to see another round.

by Anonymousreply 31August 28, 2019 8:38 PM

Oh look who it is! It's Serena's shameless coach on ESPN again.

by Anonymousreply 32August 28, 2019 8:39 PM

How much more do we need to hear about Coco Gauff? Please give us a day off

by Anonymousreply 33August 28, 2019 8:43 PM

Coric and Berrettini were stunning in person during my trip to the USO.

by Anonymousreply 34August 28, 2019 10:34 PM

I don't like the awkwardness that Kyrgios' outbursts create but is he really worse than the likes of McEnroe, Connors, Nastase and others? I think the tennis world has just gotten used to mostly civil matches in the past 20 years. I don't mind an outburst here and there as long as it doesn't go too far.

and then you had players like Roddick who would say very nasty things towards the umpires, linespeople and occasionally his opponents but he never got in major trouble for it and the press often overlooked it

by Anonymousreply 35August 28, 2019 10:40 PM

R35, I think Kyrigos’s racist statements and physically threatening behavior (chair-throwing, throwing a water bottle at the umpire’s chair) may put him in another class.

by Anonymousreply 36August 28, 2019 10:56 PM

yeah I don't like that stuff but

not too long ago Paire threw a major fit I think it was in DC maybe last year and he was throwing stuff on court too

I remember some old tennis clip of a player (I forget who) smashing a flower vase)

and then there's a clip when 1 player was chasing the other

so I don't like it but Kyrgios isn't the first

and plenty of players have said foul things to umpires. Fognini, Tsitsipas, Medvedev...

by Anonymousreply 37August 28, 2019 11:00 PM

What bothers me is that the crowd seems to go to. matches to watch him melt down. It’s become his selling point.

by Anonymousreply 38August 28, 2019 11:03 PM

Patrick M. must have nudes or a sex tape of some VIP because his players are always over-featured at Grand Slams. Serena is one thing, but Coco Gauff is another. That poor girl isn't even cute to look at. Give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 39August 28, 2019 11:03 PM

Patrick is a fucking opportunist. He's trying to become the next mega coach since Nick Bollietieri isn't a factor anymore. He's in Gauff and Tsitsipas' boxes. He talks about Chardy when he plays well. I bet if Dimitrov and Pavlyuchenkova regain their form, he'll be in their boxes too. He's awful

by Anonymousreply 40August 28, 2019 11:08 PM

What racist statements has Kyrgios made? I’m aware of a lot of his other behavior but wasn’t aware of that.

by Anonymousreply 41August 28, 2019 11:14 PM

R41, maybe “using a crude ethnic insult” is more the appropriate description. He called Fergus Murphy a “potatohead,” possibly more than once. (The Irish are rather touchy about the subject of potatoes).

by Anonymousreply 42August 28, 2019 11:25 PM

hands down, Londero wins for best tennis attire of the tournament.

And sexy AF too!

by Anonymousreply 43August 28, 2019 11:39 PM

ooohhhh, Djoko playing with hurt shoulder..... it looks grim

by Anonymousreply 44August 28, 2019 11:53 PM

Novak is still pretty thin. Not as gaunt as he was a year or so ago but that isn't saying much since he was skeletal.

by Anonymousreply 45August 28, 2019 11:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 46August 29, 2019 12:14 AM

by Anonymousreply 47August 29, 2019 12:14 AM

I'm not sure that Djokovic has two more sets in him. It's painful to watch an injured player play.

by Anonymousreply 48August 29, 2019 12:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 49August 29, 2019 12:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 51August 29, 2019 12:40 AM

Kyrgios is about as foul as Nastase used to be (and still is). A four-year ban like Nastase got would be a nice ouster for Nick.

by Anonymousreply 63August 29, 2019 2:00 AM

People against Nick K should write his sponsors about him being bad example to kids etc. not good sportsmanship etc...

I'm rooting for Stan the man and Kei N.

by Anonymousreply 64August 29, 2019 2:54 AM

Where is Kyrgios with a machete when you need him? He could drop by the booth with Chris Evert and Chris Fowler and go wild and do the tennis world a big favor.

by Anonymousreply 65August 29, 2019 2:56 AM

Kyrgios is fucking hot. His arrogance is so sexy to me.

by Anonymousreply 66August 29, 2019 3:04 AM

Seems like grandma Serena is gonna pull off the comeback win.

by Anonymousreply 67August 29, 2019 3:27 AM

R64 You want a write in campaign against Nick because he sets a bad example for children yet you are rooting for Stan? Stan walked out on his wife and infant daughter because he felt it was interfering with his tennis game. He came back only to walk out on them again once he found a new girlfriend. Stan the man is anything but, he’s trash!

by Anonymousreply 68August 29, 2019 3:30 AM

don't forget Donna Vekic was a MUCH younger gf

by Anonymousreply 72August 29, 2019 3:59 AM

by Anonymousreply 74August 29, 2019 4:05 AM

I like CoCo sure - but I’m already over the hype. What’s the big deal really? McNally is only 17 and American and almost beat Serena tonight but they didn’t talk about it even in the same stratosphere. IF that were coco playing Serena - oh man

by Anonymousreply 80August 29, 2019 6:49 AM

by Anonymousreply 81August 29, 2019 6:50 AM

There is a very hot guy in Coco's box. With a goatee....he looks Spanish. Does anyone who is he?

by Anonymousreply 82August 29, 2019 7:39 AM

They slobber over CoCo because she has the right team behind her promoting her. She seems like a nice kid with a lot of potential, but she is being overexposed and it makes me not want to root for her.

by Anonymousreply 83August 29, 2019 10:16 AM

I was really hoping Granny V would survive long enough in this tournament to get a redemption rematch against silly Coco. The Venus who played this week would have demolished Gauff. Shame she drew Elina “GEMS” Svitolina in round 2.

by Anonymousreply 84August 29, 2019 11:21 AM

Is there a thread about the African Olympic spot qualification tournament???

The spots go to Mohamed Safwat and Mayar Sherif.

The Asian spots (Asian Games 2018) went to Denis Istomin and Wang Qiang.

The America spots (2 per gender) decided at PaAms went to João Menezes, Tomás Barrios, Nadia Podoroska and Caroline Dolehide.

Dolehide is unlikely to be allowed to use it. If there are 4 US women qualified through ranking, they will take precedent over her. The others won't have this problem.

They must be in top 300 in June 2020. So far they all are in but some of them (the Egyptians, the Chilen guy) are in the 200s.

SHUT UP CHRIS FOWLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DAMN HIS idiotic i have to say something about everything and i have to have the last word even though i don't know anything about tennis verbal diarrhea and jaw aerobics has me turning down the sound! does ESPN pay him for each word he spews?.. oh yeah, and retire ancient cliff drysdale while their at it as well!... alexandra stephenson? when and where did they dig her up from? she had a couple of good results what 20 years ago and now she is a tennis channel commentator and tennis "cough cough" expert!?

patrick morataglou (or however the hell you spell his name) REEKS OF A OPPORTUNISTIC WHORE! can't believe serena didn't fire his ass after last years' debacle!..

speaking of mcnally i'm WAY MORE IMPRESSED with her at 17 then i am with coco gauff at 15!..

speaking of the over top praise and attention for ONLY 15 years old coca gauff? uh, doesn't anyone remember a player named chris evert who at 15 defeated the world number #1 and just crowned grand slam winner margaret court? uh, doesn't anyone remember a player named jennifer capriati who at 15 defeated navratilova at wimbledon! and then later that summer was thisclose to defeating monica seles (herself only 17) at the u..s open semi and if she had done so would have defeated navratilova (even martina publicly admitted this!) in the finals of the u.s. open thus winning the whole thing at 15!....

i guess the u.s.t.a. and u.s media is DESPERATE for the next great u.s. champion and if she has to be or is the next "great black hope" that makes it even better!...

by Anonymousreply 86August 29, 2019 1:34 PM

Was also surprising to see (and it’s been happening for awhile but I really noticed it last night) that the narrative around Serena has reached insufferable levels in regards to the general tennis fan or just general US spectator.

Anyone who is a true tennis fan and been watching for years knows that serena is anything but classy and dignified. Sure, she is an incredible athlete and competitor but class? Just look at last years final (and too old to behave like that to boot).

But now Serena is being treated like she can do no wrong and is invincible. All the armchair tennis fans are there for her, much like Federer to be honest (although he is way more classy). When it looked as if she might lose last night, the crowd seemed shocked and worried, and the commentators perpetuated the same narrative.

I find it ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 87August 29, 2019 2:53 PM

Guess what? American tennis fans are invested in Serena Williams and like Coco Gauff? Based on that, ESPN, the Tennis Channel and the media give them extra coverage. That’s the way the business goes. It’s just so shocking, I know.

I watch the matches and turn off the volume. I recommend it.

by Anonymousreply 88August 29, 2019 3:03 PM

R87, I may have accidentally clicked ff instead of ww...apologies if so, since I agree with you.

by Anonymousreply 89August 29, 2019 3:04 PM

Confused about Coco. There’s 2 women players named Coco right? It’s confusing.

by Anonymousreply 90August 29, 2019 3:18 PM

R90 The original Coco (Colleen Vandeweghe) must be PISSED that this new Coco (Cori Gauff) has decided to launch this absurd campaign: "Call Me Coco". The commercial not only airs every 4 minutes, but everyone in her box is wearing the t shirt, she's getting all the prime time coverage, and even print posters of it are all over the place.

She is still listed in the draws as 'Cori' too, rather than Vandeweghe who has always appeared as Coco in competition (much like Wawrinka is 'Stan' in the draws now instead of 'Stanislas').

Of course there is always more focus on the Americans, and always more focus on Serena in general - but I think she has earned that. She has made 3 out of the last 5 major finals lol. Nobody has taken the mantle from her (in the abysmal Muguruza/Kerber/Pliskova/Halep/Wozniacki/Sloane era). She is still the player to beat in the draw. And even though she is obnoxious, i'll let the adulation slide because she and Venus got treated like shit earlier in their career... often more so at home in the US.

In Gauff's case it is pure marketing from her major sponsors, Federer's management company, Barilla, PR, Teen Vogue, New Balance, etc. before she has had any significant results. I think she's only ever beaten 3 players who were ranked inside the top 100.

by Anonymousreply 91August 29, 2019 3:25 PM

A. Zverev and Djokovic both look to be on the Anorexia Diet. Tiafoe could donate some cake to curveless Zverev.

by Anonymousreply 93August 29, 2019 4:47 PM

Dare I say Osaka is starting to regain form and showing flashes of her aggressive success again. Not consistently yet but you can tell she’s starting to come back to form. It only took 8 months

by Anonymousreply 104August 29, 2019 6:17 PM

R97 She did do her dance. I attached a gif. Also gave a really nice hug to Petra. She beat her at the Australian Open last year, it's nice to see her playing well and defending like this.

Some other WTA results of note:

Osaka def. Linette in straights. Will face the winner of Babos and Call Me Coco next.

Jabeur def. Sasnovich in 3. Plays Karolina Pliskova next.

Sakkari def. Peng (former semi finalist here) in 3. Plays Barty next.

Muchova def. Hsieh in 3 (in a third set tiebreak, both fun players and sad to lose one so early). Plays Serena next.

Sevastova def. Swiatek in 3.

Yastremska def. Peterson in 2. Ukranian battle against Svitolina next.

Kenin def. Siegemund in 2. American battle against Madison Keys next.

French Ferro def. Mladonna in 3. Sascha Bajin better be getting that Thiem ass for his efforts! Mladenovic now heading towards the bottom of the pecking order for French players. May not even be played in the Fed Cup final.

I’m just curious who will Serena lose to in the finals. You just know she’ll make her usual great run to the finals only to lose to whoever is on the other side of the net.

by Anonymousreply 106August 29, 2019 6:37 PM

R106 The other side of the draw is looking pretty dry tbh. I don't know if any of them can beat her.

In terms of ranking, the top 10 seeds there are Sabalenka, Bertens, Halep (who didn't look great in her opening round) and Osaka (who has a bung knee and hasn't looked convincing, not even today in a straight set win - plus Serena destroyed her in Toronto). The only dangerous floaters around are Bencic and both Andreescu and Kanepi who don't have the health to make the final right now.

Medvedev is 2 sets up but has smashed racquets and thrown tantrums galore.

TiASSfoe and Flopos Zverev are into a deciding set showdown. Come on booty!

by Anonymousreply 107August 29, 2019 6:44 PM

Tennys Sandgren does not have a single sponsor it seems. No one brand wants to be seen associated with him. So he curated his twitter account for nothing. Sad! Bring Pizzagate back Tennys!

by Anonymousreply 108August 29, 2019 7:35 PM

Does Medvedev pretend that he is dying in every match he plays?

by Anonymousreply 109August 29, 2019 7:40 PM

R109 he kinda does. I also don't know that he should be allowed to be given special gels and stuff from his coach halfway through. Especially with all the communication they were doing between them (should have been a violation). Just like Tsitsipas and his shoes.

Wawrinka is through. He faces Kecmanovic/Lorenzi next to set up a potential 4R against Novak. I think if Novak's shoulder is still a bit off, Stan can beat him again.... and I hope so! Love when Stan peaks against him (or anyone really). And then we have a better chance at a new slam winner.

Carl Suarez Navarro has been fined her entire $40,000 prize money for tanking. She withdrew after losing the first set 2-6 to Timea Babos. Same fine that Tatishvili and Tomic received.

Also sounds like Sacha Bajin is already planning to (do a Kamau Murray and) jump ship from Mladonna. Sounds like Kerber has already put in a request.

R108: He just needs time. Don't screw up for a while and have some good results.

Of course he is not the type of player who atracts a lot of sponsors anyway. The truth is he is not flopping as hard as i expected

De Miñaur is not the next gen with best weapons, but he is the one with best mentality

And i know Felix is very young and he is doing well, but he second part of the season is pretty meh, his level is getting lower and the fact that Shapo defeated him without a problem is something to be worried about.

Tsitsipas losing with Stan at RG was the beginning of his decline this season. I think most next gen are too busy showing how rich they are, how hot is their girlfriend and all that jazz on instagram and tweeting stupid things, to be focused on tennis.

And you can do several things at the same time, but when you are starting your career you better be focused in what you are doing. Once you are stablished you know way better how to fit other parts of your life on your tennis career

by Anonymousreply 112August 29, 2019 8:49 PM

R112 I think Tsitsi is also facing the consequences of his outrageous scheduling earlier in the season, playing every single week. Even though he's not going deep in anything at the moment (so his body is still intact), he is clearly burnt out, mentally fried, and unfocused in his matches. Serve deserts him in the important moments and he is not as motivated as he was when he started the year and had all those great runs.

I think he still needs to try and make the YEC (even if he doesn't win a match there, the ranking points and $$ are too valuable for if he continues to lose next year where he has so many points to defend) but needs to play a smarter schedule and remain hungry.

DOMINIC THIEM! ARE YOU GETTING IT YET???? IS IT YOU OR YOUR "TEAM" THAT ARE STILL CLUELESS ABOUT YOUR CAREER??!..

by Anonymousreply 114August 29, 2019 9:12 PM

halep is down 4-3 in the 3rd set to taylor townhouse i mean townsend.. unbelievable! this is what happens when even a top player hasn't played and doesn't know HOW to play a serve and volleyer even just a average one? heaven forbid if halep played a in her prime with today's rackets and strings martina! ...

shameful that because of today's climate of EVERY player playing the same that even a average heavy serve and volleyer or ANY player with ANY bit of "variety" can scare and even defeat the top players because these styles are so 1% rare in women's tennis today! pathetic!...

by Anonymousreply 120August 29, 2019 10:10 PM

(po)TayTo! Felt like I was watching Navratilova in the late 70s! Homegirl came to the net ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE TIMES. What a queen. Exposed Halep for the basic baseliner that she is. Screamona didn't even try and lob her ONCE... useless. This is how the players like Hsieh and Putintseva are beating the likes of Osaka/Kerber/Halep/Wozniacki etc. They can baseline rally forever, you have to use the *whole* court.

Also nice for her to save Halep's MP considering she had MP against Bertens at Wimbledon and choked on it. She's been working up to a result like this for a while. So pleased for Taylor!

by Anonymousreply 121August 29, 2019 10:10 PM

impressive win for Townsend.

sad about Tiafoe but he's too inconsistent and doesn't have the best tactics all the time.

Medvedev did an underhanded serve today...anyone else see it? He's got a real stank attitude when things aren't going his way.

by Anonymousreply 128August 29, 2019 11:07 PM

R128 and Nadal got a walkover in Canada too then still had the nerve to claim he was fatigued and couldn't play Cincinnati

after the USO regardless of whether he wins or not he'll claim he's fatigued

by Anonymousreply 133August 29, 2019 11:17 PM

Of course Nadal gets a walkover on top of an extremely easy draw. I hope either Djokovic or the Russian wins the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 134August 29, 2019 11:18 PM

Lmao... Kokkinakis was NOT going to beat Rafa. The only player left in his draw who can beat him before the final is Kyrgios. And I actually think he can do it this time despite the Wimbledon loss.

Medvedev is cramping and has overplayed.

Titsy, Thiem, RBA, Khachanov, Coric, and Fognini are out.

Zverev is playing 5 setters in every match, Federer keeps dropping the first set to sub-200 players, and Djokovic has a shoulder injury and has to get through Wawrinka.

Could this FINALLY be the year for a random breakthrough? At the very least... a new finalist? I hope Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka, and GEMS Monfils have come to play. Goffin, Lil' Diego, Rublev, and PCB need to seize any opportunities too. If someone new goes through I hope it's not Isner.

by Anonymousreply 135August 29, 2019 11:39 PM

Coco's family/box need to Calm the FD. Please.

by Anonymousreply 144August 30, 2019 7:25 AM

R144 Yeah they were really disrespectful, hooting and hollering on Babos' unforced errors. Her dad especially. It's already not a great sign that her box is filled with like 25 people, mostly brand ambassadors and sponsors etc. Some players only have one or two people there. Family and friends.

I actually quite like Gauff herself and her composure on court is something else. But the hype and media adulation (without REAL significant results) is actually extremely Kournikova-esque. And I don't see this ending well either. People made fun of Anna K for being more press than tennis, but she at least had reached the Wimbledon SF, beaten a heap of top 10 players, won grand slams in doubles etc. in addition to just being 'marketable'.

It's not to say that Gauff won't achieve all those things, but maybe achieve them *first* before inundating the public with your image and branding.

by Anonymousreply 145August 30, 2019 7:59 AM

Yes, you’re right r145, unfortunately US tennis media refuses to let young players grow and flourish without hyping them up. Remember when Donald Young was supposed to be the next big thing a few years back? Look how that turned out. The parents are to blame for this because they should want their child to develop without the pressure and expectations of being the next best thing. They buy into the hype, sponsorships contracts and the media deluge pumping up their daughter. The results should come first before the hype....

by Anonymousreply 146August 30, 2019 8:30 AM

OMG, I just realized that Donald Young was the Anna Kournikova of men tennis: he never ever won a single ATP title. And speaking of young, the guy meanwhile is 30. I have not exactly followed his career but what was his glass ceiling? His parents? Headcase? His height? Power (or lack thereof)?

by Anonymousreply 147August 30, 2019 9:06 AM

I was at the Open yesterday gurls and I have a few observations:

1. Feli Lopez wears a black jockstrap under his white shorts. The result is a miracle, especially when he is sweaty. He bends over frequently and poses for a few seconds to allow spectators to behold this wonder of nature.

2. Henri Laaksonen is ripped. His body is beautiful. I watched the Shapo match expecting to admire Denis, but couldn't take my eyes of Laaksonen, especially his legs and ass.

3. Medvedev stands 20 feet behind the baseline most of the time. His strokes are gorgeous, but he's too far back.

4. Alex de Minaur is an incredible player. He's everywhere on the court, has great feel, and his groundies are gorgeous. But he's small.

by Anonymousreply 148August 30, 2019 11:42 AM

Woah so Taylor beat Halep in a very tight match? Wasn’t she the brunt of many fat jokes here in dL before? Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 149August 30, 2019 11:49 AM

R148, thank you for your observations. I liked all of them, but I liked the first two most.

by Anonymousreply 150August 30, 2019 11:50 AM

The only time I hear Taylor Townsend’s name is at the US Open...does she have any results or good runs on the rest of the WTA tour?

by Anonymousreply 151August 30, 2019 12:37 PM

WELL WELL SAID #145 AND #146... i actually hope that osaka routs her and perhaps this will sink in to her parent's head! and yes, that large crowded box of "ahem" supporters screams and reeks of opportunistic leeches, including serena's coach!...

in regards to donald young? i just think his game never developed, never got better and yes, his height and lack of great outside coaching were factors. in the juniors he was the top dog and soon turning pro he watched junior rivals like sam querrey pass him by...

he was like this era's billy martin or scott davis (any long time tennis fan remember these top juniors of the 70's and 80's) who never did ANYTHING in the pros...

by Anonymousreply 152August 30, 2019 1:13 PM

R151 it seems like she rarely plays outside of the us

by Anonymousreply 153August 30, 2019 1:23 PM

OFF TOPIC, BUT ON YOUTUBE, THEIR ARE people posting how negative and even "hateful" chris evert is in regards to serena and commentating on serena matches, some posters saying she is always like this with serena and so on and so on? HUH? EVERT HAS ALWAYS BEEN more then complimentary towards serena, encouraging her, respecting her, praising her, giving her support both publicly and personally and serena herself has thanked and praised evert both publicly and privately? is it because evert (it is her job after all) is trying not to be bias for serena and not kissing serena's ass if she is critiquing her game during a match?...

some of these serena supporters on youtube posting this stuff sound like trump supporters! LITERALLY brainwashed and/or pathologically obsessed with serena as the perfect goddess who cannot be EVER EVER REMOTELY talked against in any way?... i don't know if these people are TRUE tennis fans or just obsessed with serena, or defenders of her race or just loons who just want and need to believe what they believe and nothing can change that (i.e. facts) or what?..

by Anonymousreply 154August 30, 2019 1:30 PM

R154 Serena has lots of fans that dont give a shit about tennis and only care about her. They think she cant do any wrong and believe shes always right. Basically to them the sun shines out of her ass and they wish to live there. They probably do with how much they kiss it. They'll mostly disappear when she retires and good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 155August 30, 2019 1:40 PM

Re: Alexandra Stevenson, I imagine ESPN is under pressure to diversify their talent, especially given all the players of color making an impact.

Seeing Taylor Townsend’s interview, she could have a future on TV. But I hope for many years of play for her.

by Anonymousreply 156August 30, 2019 2:08 PM

I thought I would enjoy looking at the OP pic 600 times, but I'm already tired of it by the 150s. He's really not that pretty, whoever he is.

by Anonymousreply 157August 30, 2019 2:12 PM

R147: Young won the Australian Open at 15 (which is not that usual for guys) combine that with the fact that he was african american (on women you have the Williams but he didn't have any black male top player) and the hype was incredibly.

And that's when everything went wrong. Young was an amazing junior, but he was clearly a junior player, with a lot of ups and downs in his game, but he won a GS so they want to rush him into playing pro tennis which was a big mistake.

They wanted to profit when the hype was high and that was a terrible decision. Young was an agressive player as junior but on atp and challengers he was simply not strong enough to carry that type of game so he morphed into a very defensive player. The result was the lost his confidence and got back to the junior tour (he won Wimbledon later).

What happened to Carlos Boluda was even more spectacular, he was the best u14 european player ever (better than Gasquet and better than Nadal), but he is a small guy, he is very strong physically but not enough tall.

His parents believed that hype (even it was obvious he will struggle when he had to play pro tennis) and made a lot of changes (including coach) when he was 15. That and a couple of injuries and he never became a top junior player. He was a good one but he flopped at GS, all that was his strengths in the past (his mental toughness) became his weakeness. He still plays, but he never reached top 200. I watched an interview and he says that a lot of people still goes to watch his matches only to see how low he sank (which is just sad).

When you have success very young can be very tricky, specially if you are not tall and strong. It's not a surprise that Felix is doing well, and i expect players like Rune or Alcaraz do well in the following years because they have the talent and the physical strenght. Others like Mochizuki probably struggle for a while, because he has the talent but his body is just of what he is, a 16 year old boy

by Anonymousreply 158August 30, 2019 2:44 PM

Yeah, there are a lot of cautionary tales our there where junior players never lived up to the hype. People seem to forget that Pete Sampras was never that great in the juniors, but he went on to have the best career among his peers (Agassi, Courier, Chang) and at one point had the most Grand Slams ever won by a male player until Federer broke that record, followed by Nadal and Djokovic.

I've seen a lot of overhyped junior girls especially not make it. Capriati was crushed by the pressure to win. She was never quite the same player after she lost that 1991 semi-final to Monica Seles. It shocked Capriati that she got outhit, outplayed, and ran into someone mentally tougher than she was. She wasn't ready for the huge disappointment that followed. Credit to her for having a comeback. It showed what her career might have been that she was able to win Slams in the era of Serena, Venus, Hingis, Davenport, Henin, Clijsters, etc.

Gauff--hmmm. We'll see. I worry about the overhyping. I think Osaka will shut her down in straights provided Osaka plays up to her abilities. Gauff's matches have actually been pretty poorly played. It's exciting to watch a young player succeed. But I remember Seles challenging Graf, and Graf challenging Navratiliova and Evert. Gauff's play hasn't reached those heights yet. But you can see the raw talent. It reminds me of the first time I saw Venus Williams play at the French Open. She was all raw talent. Once it got harnessed, she became a champion. Gauff has that potential if she remains grounded.

Here's Taylor Townsend's press conference from last night

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 162August 30, 2019 3:19 PM

At 15 Andrea Jaeger reached the Wimbledon quarters (beating Ginny Wade) and the US Open semis in 1980. She beat Austin, Navratilova, Goolagong and Mandlikova that year and finished the year at no. 6 or 7. She never had a better run of wins after that.

by Anonymousreply 163August 30, 2019 3:31 PM

Are there any other players in the tournament besides Serena and Coco?

by Anonymousreply 164August 30, 2019 4:05 PM

Townsend is very articulate and likable. Very. I've always loved her game, yet always concerned about her weight. I hope she gets another win.

During that press conference above, she noted the economic consequences of taking flights to Europe and losing early. I know Rubin and others have mentioned similar conditions, but they always seem to be listed in vague terms. I believe the 200 and below players struggle financially, but what does the typical balance sheet look like, I wonder, and how much can be written off.

De Minaur is fun to watch but I could do without the vamping. His celebrations after an opponents error are like Hewitt's reactions after winning a slam.

I agree, TayTo's press conference was very charming. Basically it seems she's figured out the schedule that works for her financially (and she plays a LOT of World Team Tennis so I wonder how much she makes from that)... but I hope she is able to get some sponsors and eventually play the WTA tour full time rather than just the high level ITFs. She has the game for it and a very marketable personality actually. Also she is still big but she HAS lost weight.... and moves a LOT better than some girls who are half her size.

by Anonymousreply 179August 30, 2019 6:13 PM

As long as he is earning his keep, I'm sure she doesn't mind. It isn't like people who hook up with gold-diggers are unaware of the situation. They have decided it's worth it.

Glad that Alex won. Wish we had been able to see that match instead of the boring Federer match and then post-match babbling about COCO COCO COCO.

During Feliciano López’s first-round win against American Taylor Fritz on Monday, a female fan in the stands was caught checking out the Spanish athlete as he changed his shirt. The unidentified spectator was also filmed as she appeared to take a shirtless snap of López, 37.

The not-so-Kodak moment made the rounds on social media, with a few members of the tennis community chiming in.

“Same thing happens when @alexdeminaur changes his shirt,” Australian tennis star Matt Reid quipped of fellow Aussie athlete Alex de Minaur.

Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis also replied, “Thotianaaaaa.”

R200 it's nice to see him winning matches but he got lucky with a dream draw and the walkover from Coric. He couldn't have asked for more. Hopefully this gives him confidence though

by Anonymousreply 207August 31, 2019 1:12 AM

R204 Extremely unhealthy dynamic. Not only that he took the family from Russia to the USA and basically forced her to become a tennis player... shoving her into the limelight and making friends with the tennis establishment before she was even a junior. But the constant shouting at her, the way he rubs her inappropriately when he comes down to court, his look of disgust with her during the matches.

Though not nearly as bad (YET), he reminds me of the fathers of Jelena Dokic / Mary Pierce / Mirjana Lucic.

by Anonymousreply 208August 31, 2019 1:19 AM

Someone should punch Medvedev hard in the head for ripping the towel out of the ball person's hand. That massive hydrocephalic forehead needs to be reduced anyway.

by Anonymousreply 209August 31, 2019 1:27 AM

lmao Med lost the crowd after he flipped them off, god I hope he loses.

by Anonymousreply 210August 31, 2019 1:38 AM

I was only half watching. He flipped them off? I thought he was pointing to his head.

by Anonymousreply 211August 31, 2019 1:40 AM

R211 nevermind just turned it back and he used his middle finger. Well know we know who the crowd will want.

by Anonymousreply 212August 31, 2019 1:42 AM

yeah if anyone in this thread still has questions about Medvedev, YES HE IS A JERK

don't take it out on the ball kids damn. Snatching the towel like that

by Anonymousreply 213August 31, 2019 1:43 AM

As a target?

by Anonymousreply 214August 31, 2019 1:43 AM

The ball kid was like 45, it was hilarious albeit uncalled for. He got the code violation.

by Anonymousreply 215August 31, 2019 1:44 AM

Medvedev is really talented but a real tool.

by Anonymousreply 216August 31, 2019 1:45 AM

He's got his shrink at the match! lmao

by Anonymousreply 217August 31, 2019 1:46 AM

It would have been "hilarious" if the ball "kid" reflexively clocked Medvedev in the face, R215.

by Anonymousreply 220August 31, 2019 2:45 AM

wow, speaking of Jelena Dokic, I remember watching her donkey years ago...just went on her insta and she got so fat! She has lost a lot but she was quite fat!

by Anonymousreply 221August 31, 2019 2:51 AM

Imagine if Djokovic and Medvedev do end up meeting on Ashe with the crowd really involved. They'll both be having angry outbursts in the QF

by Anonymousreply 222August 31, 2019 2:51 AM

That would be the perfect opportunity for a sinkhole orchestrated by AA beyond the grave.

by Anonymousreply 223August 31, 2019 3:00 AM

Eh, I like both Novak and Medvedev. I'd take them over Nadal any day.

by Anonymousreply 224August 31, 2019 3:29 AM

The Russian.

The Greek.

The Croatian.

by Anonymousreply 225August 31, 2019 3:33 AM

Come on Feli! Kill this brat so I don't have to see him in the next round.

by Anonymousreply 226August 31, 2019 3:39 AM

LMFAO Medvedev trolling the crowd telling them their energy is what fueled him to win

I wonder if the boos will carry over to his next match

by Anonymousreply 227August 31, 2019 4:10 AM

I'll miss the sight of Feliciano's jock strap.

by Anonymousreply 228August 31, 2019 4:21 AM

Medvedev is a cunt, and I'm here for it.

by Anonymousreply 229August 31, 2019 4:57 AM

Medvedev is a fucking asshole. I hope he is given a huge fine for flipping off the audience and that arrogant court interview afterwards. I'd take Kyrgios 10x over this creep.

by Anonymousreply 230August 31, 2019 4:58 AM

R230, you've lost your mind. Kyrgios is worse than cancer, AIDS, and ebola combined. He is a walking, talking, bitching and moaning plague.

by Anonymousreply 231August 31, 2019 5:01 AM

I disagree. Kyrgios has his behavioral problems but Medvedev is just a giant jackass.

I'm so sick of Kyrgios. His brother posts things like the court is full because they came to see Nick. No ,they came to see a train wreck, not good tennis.

And he's dancing after points...this guy is a clown.

by Anonymousreply 237August 31, 2019 5:57 AM

Novak Djokovic’s night is already off to a bad start.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion was captured on video getting into it with a fan during his warmup session before facing American Denis Kudia in the third round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday night.

Djokovic was getting ready to serve when he stopped – catching his toss on the way down – before walking over to the fence to confront a fan, who may have said something he didn’t like. After the discussion, Djokovic walked away and kept pointing at the fan.

“I’ll come find you,” he said. “Trust me, I’ll come find you.”

Djokovic will get a chance to take his frustrations out on the court against Kudia.

Who is this Coco they keep talking about? Is she the baby that Serena had?

by Anonymousreply 239August 31, 2019 9:04 AM

Is Medvedev a jerk? Absolutely, but i loved how he trolled the crowd in the interview. He owned the villian role (something Nole refused to do) and i loved it, there's only one thing better than winning to a cheering crowd and it's giving i big fuck you to a crowd that wants you to lose.

To be fair with Murray, it was a close match (when he played awfully) to a player who totally destroyed his next round opponent. Andy will need some time, that's all.

And Coco hype is out of the charts. I think she has a great mentallity but her groundstrokes are not as good as Anisimova's. I think Osaka will destroy her

medvedev.. imagine if he had pulled that snatching the towel act with some ball kid 12 and under!?!!!

why are all the top male players have some kind of "mental Issue"? is their any top male player that is more or less down to earth and normal?..

by Anonymousreply 248August 31, 2019 2:24 PM

R238, apparently during the match itself he was heckled by a man in an “RF” tee shirt.

Andy Murray seems very sane and funny off-court. I wonder if that’s held him back, if he could have done more with more ruthlessness.

by Anonymousreply 249August 31, 2019 3:08 PM

Mary Joe is back in the house for whoever asked, calling the Townsend match. No one talking about Andreescu this tournament but she is getting to the finals, just watch. Loved whoever pointed out that Medvedev owned the villain role (something Djoker can’t do) and it made me like him more - especially afterward his admission that he is “working on himself.” At least he’s honest - although a little bratty still. That will evolve I’m sure (Berdych was same way when he was younger and grew out of it )

by Anonymousreply 250August 31, 2019 3:14 PM

What’s this? Showing tennis instead of a half hour listening to the wisdom of Patrick Morataglou???

by Anonymousreply 251August 31, 2019 3:20 PM

this girl is fat as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 252August 31, 2019 3:24 PM

I don't like either, but why is it okay that Medvedev embraces the villain role and not okay when Kyrgios is doing it? You know full well that if Nick K gave that post match interview, y'all would have crucified him in this thread (and me too).

Mary Joe and Patrick Mac commentating on this Townsend/Cirstea match.... wasn't it Patrick who banned TayTo from playing the US Open despite being the #1 ranked junior in the world? Because she was too fat? These two are lucky to have the connections they do.

by Anonymousreply 253August 31, 2019 3:25 PM

Step aside, Nick Kyrgios.

The U.S. Open has a new villain.

Russian Daniil Medvedev became a Flushing enemy Friday night. In the first set, he ripped a towel from a ball person’s hands, drawing a code violation, threw his racket in the direction of the chair umpire and was seen on the big screen flashing his middle finger by the side of his head.

The fifth seed survived Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, but likely will face the crowd’s ire the rest of his stay at the tournament. After his tantrum, the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd got behind Lopez, cheering for every point he won and furiously booing Medvedev.

“I was in the heat of the moment, starting losing the momentum,” the 23-year-old Medvedev said. “It was tough. And I paid for it the whole match after.

“What I can say is I’m working on myself and hopefully will be better next time,” he added. see also Novak Djokovic on confrontation with fan: 'He did me a favor'

In his on-court interview, he seemed to revel in his role as the villain, and challenged fans for more boos.

“First of all, what can I say? Thank you guys, because your energy tonight gave me the win,” Medvedev said, speaking directly to the fans like he was a wrestling heel. “If you weren’t here, guys, I would probably lose the match. I was so tired. I want all you to know when you sleep tonight I won today because of you.

“The energy you’ve given me right now, guys, I think it will be enough for my five next matches. The more you do this, the more I will win for you guys. Thank you.”

Unseeded German Dominik Koepfer, Medvedev’s fourth-round opponent, probably just gained a lot of fans for at least his next match.

by Anonymousreply 254August 31, 2019 3:33 PM

It’s different (thus far) for Medvedev and Kyrgios because Kyrgios amps up the antics for seemingly no reason at times, just to put on a show and to distract. His is gamesmanship and also a deflection from his own fears since people have been talking about his talent for years. Medvedev’s is genuine, heat of the moment frustration. And I don’t think anyone can argue that Daniil gives it 100% when he is out there. The same cannot be said of Nick, unfortunately

by Anonymousreply 255August 31, 2019 3:37 PM

Psycho Kyrgios isn't going to like anyone getting attention other than him. God knows what insane shenanigans he'll pull for his next match. At least Medvedev keeps playing well the whole time instead of tanking.

by Anonymousreply 256August 31, 2019 3:40 PM

I don't remember Berdych ever flipping off the crowd, abusing ball people, or throwing coins and rackets at umpires, R250.

I'm all for letting the sponsors of Medvedev and Kyrgios know that we're boycotting them if it comes to that. One Nastase was more than enough. We don't need that level of nastiness again.

by Anonymousreply 257August 31, 2019 3:42 PM

Cirstea went for a toilet break after losing the set, to try and throw off Townsend's focus and rhythm, and Townsend brought a jump rope out of her bag and started skipping... dead. She may be fat but she's actually quite fit and can defend better than a lot of thinner players.

by Anonymousreply 258August 31, 2019 4:08 PM

Townsend's game is fun to watch. She reminds me of Martina Navratilova the way she swarms the net. She's surprisingly fast for someone who is heavier. She has a lot of variety to her shotmaking. She really understands the geometry of the court. I hope this run gives her confidence enough to do better in the smaller tournaments and improve her ranking. The women's game could use some variety to break up the boring baseline-fests we're usually subjected to.

by Anonymousreply 259August 31, 2019 4:19 PM

R259 Agreed, it's like watching the modern girls play against a time capsule from the early 1980s. Very fun. It's not just netplay either, she's hit some great short-angled backhand winners, keeps mixing up the spins and slices to draw the error... very good tennis IQ for such an attack-minded player. Hope she can keep it up.

by Anonymousreply 260August 31, 2019 4:24 PM

Townsend into week two. Great for her. Hope she lands some endorsements.

by Anonymousreply 261August 31, 2019 4:44 PM

Her half of the draw is still very random and I wonder if she go even further. Plays the winner of (out of form) Wozniacki vs (injured) Andreescu next. As good as both those players are, they're not at their best, and it's still very hard to have to hit passing shot winners on every point against Townsend.

She's already won 6 matches (from qualifying to second week), I wonder if she can do the full Alexandra Stevenson?

Mertens def. Petkovic 6-3 6-3 also.

by Anonymousreply 262August 31, 2019 4:49 PM

Wozniacki lost the first set

by Anonymousreply 263August 31, 2019 4:57 PM

Enough about Townsend! Let's talk about CoCo!

by Anonymousreply 264August 31, 2019 4:59 PM

Andreescu's coach is HOT

by Anonymousreply 265August 31, 2019 5:01 PM

Medvedev like Kyrgios and Bublik have also thrown in an underhanded serve at times. He did it in the last round.

Has Kyrgios been rude to a ballkid? He's a jerk to umpires and hecklers in the crowd but I don't remember him yelling at someone for offering him a towel when he didn't ask for it.

I'll take Kyrgios over Medvedev.

but I'm glad we have a few players who don't care about being perfect gentleman all the time. I don't like when it goes too far and players get defaulted but some tension is good. I wasn't alive for the craziness of the late 70s and early 80s of the men's game and all their bad behavior but the clips online don't look any less rude than what we're seeing now

by Anonymousreply 266August 31, 2019 5:21 PM

and Berdych is a diva but he's not like Medvedev.

by Anonymousreply 267August 31, 2019 5:22 PM

The towel thing was not that big a deal. It isn't like the ball-gramps even flinched. It wasn't even worthy of a violation.

by Anonymousreply 268August 31, 2019 5:24 PM

Andreescu is my favorite newer player. Hope she goes deep in the tournament. Her variety is so fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 269August 31, 2019 5:25 PM

Perfect decorum isn't the expected standard, R266, just not the level of assholery, nasty habits, and entitlement that Medvedev, Kyrgios, A. Zverev and a few others bring to the court as if they're gifting us. A Kyrgios/Medvedev final would be one that I'd be sure to miss. Nobody needs to see tennis brought back to the bad old days of Connors and Nastase.

by Anonymousreply 270August 31, 2019 5:35 PM

I absolutely loathe Medvedev. Give me Kyrgios any day.

by Anonymousreply 271August 31, 2019 5:39 PM

Medvedev can be rude, but he is not rude to his rivals. Kyrgios can be completely disrespectful to his rival, and most of the things he do on court are to distract the rival. And of course you don't see Medvedev tanking a match just because he is not in the mood for playing.

The truth is the next gens are quite bad on their behaviour on court (probably with the exception of FAA). A lot of throwing raquets, and that in the best case scenario.

And Medeved is not praised for his behaviour on court but for his speech, and his speech was spot on. The crowd in the US Open are too loud and rude, Feliciano even complain for the noise in the point he lost the third set.

Unfortunately we¡ll see more and more this behaviour. Kuznetsova said that sometimes she did some warm up with young players and they made her feel like she was a ballgirl. Änd it's quite easy to find a lot of rudeness on U14 and U16 matches

by Anonymousreply 272August 31, 2019 5:46 PM

You think Medvedev's interview was "spot on"? Are you nuts? He completely disrespected the crowd there. You don't bash the fans of tennis who give up their evening and buy a ticket to come see you play. What he did was worse than anything Kyrgios has ever done.

by Anonymousreply 273August 31, 2019 5:48 PM

Andreescu def. Wozinacki next she'll play Townsend. I wonder how Taylor will deal with all the lobs. Surely she will know they're coming

by Anonymousreply 274August 31, 2019 5:49 PM

R273: A crowd that was booing him all the time including the interview. Yes, it was spot on. He was very clear and he was even funny.

And the US crowd (like the RG crowd) are not "the fans of tennis". Fans of tennis know how to behave on a court

by Anonymousreply 275August 31, 2019 5:52 PM

so Chung is finally back and went through qualifying. I wonder if he can do anything against Nadal

I'm surprised he doesn't have a protected ranking

by Anonymousreply 276August 31, 2019 5:53 PM

R273, I didn't think there was anything wrong with his speech, I thought it was funny. I'm sure it hurts him a little bit (on the inside) that the crowd boos you etc

I'm sure the crowd will forget very soon.

by Anonymousreply 277August 31, 2019 5:54 PM

Medvedev threw down the gauntlet with his behavior. That came before the crowd justifiably booed him. He ultimately had nobody to blame but himself.

by Anonymousreply 278August 31, 2019 5:56 PM

R276: Nadal is the most reliable player against young players and Chung came from two very long matches.

Hopefully he'll give a fight, but i doubt he has a chance

by Anonymousreply 279August 31, 2019 5:59 PM

Not to defend him, but someone said that somebody in the crowd insulted him before the towel incident, which was what angered him. No clue if that is true though. I can't say I like Medvedev but I can't stand Kyrgios.

by Anonymousreply 280August 31, 2019 6:01 PM

Bertens always find a way to lose way before reaching the final rounds

by Anonymousreply 281August 31, 2019 6:01 PM

Clever? Funny? That speech was about as funny as getting cancer. It was smug, smarmy, and immature. The way he kept closing his eyes and raising his hands. I have seen so many dudebros commenting "lol trolled!!!!!" towards the crowd.

This is also more of a general comment not necessarily directed at the posters here, but I find it so strange that a lot of people seem to equate arrogance and bratty behaviour with "having a personality" or "being entertaining for tennis". Since when is being a cunt a personality?

Meanwhile, someone needs to send this video of TayTo to Jack Sock.

I don't like either of them.

by Anonymousreply 285August 31, 2019 6:06 PM

The crowd booed Medvedev because he was acting like an arrogant son of a bitch. He richly deserved to be booed. I can't believe anybody is defending that indefensible post-match interview he gave. That's going to haunt him for a long time. Kyrgios shows more humanity than Medvedev does. Medvedev just seems evil.

by Anonymousreply 286August 31, 2019 6:10 PM

R283 you need to work on your reading comprehension dear. I never said his speech was "like getting cancer". I said it was about as 'funny' as getting cancer. Meaning not funny at all.... despite what many of the posters here are saying.

by Anonymousreply 287August 31, 2019 6:10 PM

R287: Both things are equaliy stupid

by Anonymousreply 288August 31, 2019 6:14 PM

R288 Almost as stupid as your inability to read basic sentences.

by Anonymousreply 289August 31, 2019 6:17 PM

Bertens winning Cincinnati last year was 1 of the bigger surprises of that whole season. Her game seems to be most suited to clay and indoor hardcourts.. Those 2 surfaces are where she has won most of her titles. I'm not surprised she lost to Goerges today. When Bertens is not at her best, her backhand is just woeful and leaks errors

by Anonymousreply 290August 31, 2019 6:19 PM

F. Lopez and PCB are teaming up in doubles today. That should be quite nice on the eyes.

[quote] Meanwhile, someone needs to send this video of TayTo to Jack Sock.

Is he as fat as Townsend was?

by Anonymousreply 292August 31, 2019 6:20 PM

As Craig Kilborn used to say, “One is an asshole, but the other is just an ass.” Kyrgios is the former and Medvedev the latter.

by Anonymousreply 293August 31, 2019 6:22 PM

R292 Nobody in the atp could be as fat as she was and be top 300

by Anonymousreply 294August 31, 2019 6:22 PM

R290 She started the year well (Madrid title, St Petersburg title), but since getting seriously ill at the French Open and losing that final at home to Alison Riske (despite having match points) her game - even more so than her mentality - has been a mess. I still think she's solid on all surfaces but because of her extreme grip, when her game is off she can be really messy.

Also Goerges is a bad matchup for her because she likes to hit at shoulder-height (as we saw in the Wimbledon QF last year), Kiki's heavy topspin sits up for Goerges to tree off.

by Anonymousreply 299August 31, 2019 7:45 PM

wow Bublik a nut but so entertaining to watch! some insane points against Andujar

by Anonymousreply 300August 31, 2019 7:54 PM

R300 Bublik's problem is that he gift his rival too many free points. He is entertaining, he is talented and a little crazy, but he needs some stability in his game.

by Anonymousreply 301August 31, 2019 7:57 PM

did you just hear Brad Gilbert talk about rafa's shoes? he's actually a size 11 but wears size 10 coz he likes tight fit, according uncle Tony told him tight fit is better from a young age LOL.

Wouldn't he get blisters if it's too tight?

by Anonymousreply 302August 31, 2019 7:58 PM

yeah the info about Nadal purposely wearing a smaller size has been out there for several years

by Anonymousreply 303August 31, 2019 8:04 PM

HERE'S THE THING: ON one hand, no one should disrespect the fans, because if it wasn't for the fans, their would be no professional tennis circuit and thus no career for these players, ON THE OTHER HAND, let's face, it at the grand slams especially and perhaps none more then the u.s. open, the vast majority especially 99% of those sitting in the great seats have NO IDEA ABOUT ANYTHING TENNIS! they get the seats because they are filthy rich, know someone, are a celebrity, or their corporation is sponsoring the tournament and get tickets for free to give away..

what percentage of people in these great seats near the court, ACTUALLY BOUGHT THEIR TICKETS? what percentage of these people follow the game 24/7 year round and know their tennis rules and tennis history?..

the true fan of the game is sitting in the rafters and at home watching....

i suppose their can be a difference between the fans on a outer court in obscurity and the fans in the stadium court, i'll give one that...

so in closing, i see it both ways... all i know is that slew hester would be rolling in his grave if he saw what the u.s. open had become... a even MORE niche sport catering to the wealthy then ever before, and seemingly the powers that be could care less as long as money from anywhere is rolling in and hopefully the money forever rolls in..

isn't it interesting how the tennis "experts" and commentators NEVER EVER mention ticket prices and the cost of attending these tournaments that is out of reach for the vast majority of tennis fans (unless of course they want to sit in the rafters and peruse the outer courts).. as it is, tennis along with golf and ice skating are THEE most expensive not just individual sport to participate in and succeed at the highest level, but among the most expensive including team sports... and what has the u.s.t.a. and other bodies done to address this? 'a promotion campaign of "net gen" events?? "fan sunday" before the open starts?...

anyone want to go to the next laver cup and spend literally 10 thousand or more to attend the 3 day event with great seats?!

by Anonymousreply 304August 31, 2019 8:07 PM

wow Nadal's draw

next he gets Isner or Cilic who both are playing poorly these days. I mean not that Isner was ever that great beyond his serve

Then the rest of the QF section is Zverev/Bedene & Schwartzman/Sandgren. Nadal couldn't have hoped for a better group

by Anonymousreply 305August 31, 2019 8:19 PM

It doesn't take tennis knowledge to detect when players have nothing but belligerence, condescension and a deep wells of anger where basic courtesy and equanimity ought to be. Medvedev, Krygios and their ilk's antics absolutely deserve a negative response from the crowd.

by Anonymousreply 306August 31, 2019 8:23 PM

R305 I hate that he got a walkover, but in Wimbledon he was shafted from 2nd seed to 3rd seed to make way for Rogie (despite going deeper than Federer the year before), and had to play Tsonga and Kyrgios in the first 3 rounds. So I don't really care if he gets some good draw karma.

I still don't think it *really* makes much of a difference how easy the draws are for the big 3 though, only a small handful of opponents can even challenge them in Bo5 anyway.

by Anonymousreply 307August 31, 2019 8:30 PM

Unless he is not in good form, Nadal is only vulnerable on the first rounds on Wimbledon, were the court is faster.

He is the most reliable player against young players. He needs really a good player to defeat him, and that on the second week of GS

by Anonymousreply 308August 31, 2019 8:32 PM

Please, Nadal has had a lot of cakewalk draws the last few years. Wimbledon this year was tough, but not that tough, and US Open last year was tough.

Why the fuck is Zverev playing 100 feet behind the baseline? At his height, he should be taking balls early and robbing his opponents of time. He and Thiem drive me crazy with that shit. Medvedev does it, too. They're never going to beat the Big 3 playing that far behind the baseline.

by Anonymousreply 309August 31, 2019 8:49 PM

Bedene is fine.

by Anonymousreply 310August 31, 2019 8:50 PM

[quote] Wouldn't he get blisters if it's too tight?

Not only that, a well-known effect of wearing shoes that are too tight is chronic ass picking.

by Anonymousreply 311August 31, 2019 8:53 PM

#306... agreed, basic human decency, behavior, integrity, character....

by Anonymousreply 312August 31, 2019 9:15 PM

I love Taylor Townsend but Andreescu has way too many weapons, smarts and variety to be hurt at all by Taylor. Bianca to the finals y’all. Probably a win.

by Anonymousreply 313August 31, 2019 9:16 PM

I wonder how much Sloane got paid to read from the script in an absolutely flat and lifeless monotone for the Estee Lauder commercial.

by Anonymousreply 314August 31, 2019 10:05 PM

Yay!!! Cilic sends Trumptard Isner packing

by Anonymousreply 315August 31, 2019 10:18 PM

I know, R315! So happy to see a Trumpeter get the boot! Cilic didn't look that great, though. I fear Nadal will take him out in straights.

by Anonymousreply 316August 31, 2019 10:21 PM

lmfao that Cilic-Isner was a real shitshow of a match. Cilic served the worst I've seen him. At times he couldn't buy a first serve and he had so many double faults! Isner's return-of-serve is so poor though that he could only take advantage of it once in the second set and blew a lot of other chances. Good riddance

unless Cilic somehow improves 1000% for the next round, he'll get straight setted handily by Nadal

by Anonymousreply 317August 31, 2019 10:36 PM

sad to see Vasek "tripod" Pospisil lose...

by Anonymousreply 318August 31, 2019 11:06 PM

Sandgren topped Pospisil in a battle of North American deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 319August 31, 2019 11:08 PM

What on earth is Naomi wearing?!

by Anonymousreply 320August 31, 2019 11:20 PM

Tripod?

by Anonymousreply 321August 31, 2019 11:22 PM

It really is a strange and ugly outfit R320

by Anonymousreply 322August 31, 2019 11:27 PM

Rumor has it Posipisil is like the begeezus.

by Anonymousreply 323August 31, 2019 11:33 PM

^... hung like the begeezus ... that should say

by Anonymousreply 324August 31, 2019 11:34 PM

Mary Jo Fernandez should not be commenting on the Gauff-Osaka game. It is not fair (or ethical)

by Anonymousreply 325August 31, 2019 11:39 PM

look at coco's nails...gross. puke green color to go with her dress.

by Anonymousreply 326August 31, 2019 11:49 PM

Please Naomi, put an end to Coco mania tonight.

by Anonymousreply 327August 31, 2019 11:52 PM

It won't put an end to coco mania, they will praise her endlessly...how she's so composed for her age, handled pressure well etc.

by Anonymousreply 328August 31, 2019 11:55 PM

Well at least a reprieve from Coco mania for the second week then ...

by Anonymousreply 329August 31, 2019 11:57 PM

Blame Nike for that ugly outfit...she’s not the only one at the Open wearing that shit outfit. The players have to wear what’s given to them via their sponsors.

by Anonymousreply 330August 31, 2019 11:58 PM

At some point, we have to have a conversation about Shapo's choice of shorts (always baggy).

by Anonymousreply 331September 1, 2019 12:01 AM

They're calling this match like Gauff has won multiple Slams and Osaka is just lucky to get a point. Nauseating

by Anonymousreply 332September 1, 2019 12:04 AM

R332 you are absolutely right. It is ridiculous. And Gauff's second serve is non-existent. Second set, she is down two breaks.

by Anonymousreply 333September 1, 2019 12:06 AM

[quote] At some point, we have to have a conversation about Shapo's choice of shorts (always baggy).

He has no ass. All shorts look baggy on him.

by Anonymousreply 334September 1, 2019 12:07 AM

wait, Pospisil is a deplorable???

by Anonymousreply 335September 1, 2019 12:07 AM

Coco mania down the tubes.

by Anonymousreply 336September 1, 2019 12:07 AM

I wish that Shapovalov were as fun to watch on the court as Youzhny used to be, and Monfils still is. But it's all brainless Bambam with a lot of UEs. Rooting for La Monf to turn it around for the rest of the match.

Nice to see Schwartzman complete the trifecta today so that Isner, Posp and Sandgren are all out.

by Anonymousreply 337September 1, 2019 12:21 AM

Are the still going to hype Coco after this?

by Anonymousreply 338September 1, 2019 12:22 AM

can you hear what she said to coco?

by Anonymousreply 339September 1, 2019 12:23 AM

coco is crying.

by Anonymousreply 340September 1, 2019 12:24 AM

Coco has had 6 double faults! 46% first serve percentage! Why are we acting like she’s the second coming of Serena?

by Anonymousreply 341September 1, 2019 12:24 AM

It's all about bums-in-seats; they'll find someone else to hype next week.

by Anonymousreply 342September 1, 2019 12:24 AM

A New York bagel!

by Anonymousreply 343September 1, 2019 12:25 AM

BAGEL FOR COCO

by Anonymousreply 344September 1, 2019 12:26 AM

The drama continues. And Osaka is a class act. Everyone cries!

by Anonymousreply 345September 1, 2019 12:26 AM

Ugh, this makes me appreciate Daniil Medvedev's post-match interview even more.

by Anonymousreply 346September 1, 2019 12:27 AM

Once again Osaka has to apologize for winning.

by Anonymousreply 347September 1, 2019 12:28 AM

I guess Coco won’t break the Top 100 tonight 😢

by Anonymousreply 348September 1, 2019 12:29 AM

So right. I hope Osaka wins it again.

by Anonymousreply 349September 1, 2019 12:29 AM

Why is Chris Evert making excuses for Coco losing!

by Anonymousreply 350September 1, 2019 12:30 AM

I hope Osaka wins the whole thing again.

by Anonymousreply 351September 1, 2019 12:32 AM

Serena and Osaka is going to be a great match...looking forward to it.

by Anonymousreply 352September 1, 2019 12:34 AM

Yea, right, R346--if Osaka had taken a page out of Medvedev's book, she would have flipped off the crowd and said how happy she was to make Coco cry.

by Anonymousreply 353September 1, 2019 12:36 AM

That was an interesting on court interview...tennis is so incestuous - Mary’s husband is Coco’s manager. So many strange relationships behind the scenes...

by Anonymousreply 354September 1, 2019 12:38 AM

Wait. Did Chrissie say that Coco would have beaten other top 10 players with the way she played tonight???

by Anonymousreply 355September 1, 2019 12:41 AM

R355, I was just gonna post about that comment! Is she drunk already?

by Anonymousreply 356September 1, 2019 12:42 AM

And now Evert just asked Osaka "How good is Coco?" Enough.

by Anonymousreply 357September 1, 2019 12:47 AM

Chrissie asked Naomi "how good is coco gauff?"

Naomi couldn't believe it.

by Anonymousreply 358September 1, 2019 12:47 AM

Naomi is being very gracious. She’s always having to apologize for winning.

by Anonymousreply 359September 1, 2019 12:48 AM

guys you're being rough on Gauff. She is 15!! She has already done amazingly for her age in this era of tennis. Osaka asked her to do the on-court interview with her which was a lovely gesture. She's a nice girl and Gauff felt guilty about it. Obviously there's lots of room for improvement but if she stays healthy and doesn't buckle under the extreme pressure, she will most certainly be a top player before she's 18.

I agree with Chris Evert and John McEnroe that everyone is putting too much pressure on her though. It's not good for someone so young in this age of social media.

Naomi looked pretty good tonight after she took the momentum in the first set. If her knee stays healthy look out. She faces Bencic next which will be a major contrast of styles

by Anonymousreply 360September 1, 2019 12:48 AM

Bencic beat Naomi twice as Brad pointed out.

by Anonymousreply 361September 1, 2019 12:49 AM

They are just hyping her and trying to boost ratings...and I guess coco benefits coz she get more sponsors, more $$ etc.

as the poster pointed out above she can't serve for shit.

by Anonymousreply 362September 1, 2019 12:51 AM

checking in later to see if Nick K. goes nuts. gonna watch a movie now. have a great night DLers.

by Anonymousreply 363September 1, 2019 12:52 AM

No one is being rough on Gauff. People are commenting on the extreme overhype by the tennis media. Asking a player how good their opponent is who they just beat is beyond anything I have ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 364September 1, 2019 12:52 AM

Kyrigos can’t go off on the umpire tonight because Marina is pregnant. His m.o. is always arguing with the ump...so how is he going to channel is frustrations tonight?

by Anonymousreply 365September 1, 2019 12:52 AM

Mariana

by Anonymousreply 366September 1, 2019 12:54 AM

wow John McEnroe and Rublev have the same agent

by Anonymousreply 367September 1, 2019 12:57 AM

R364 there have been plenty of times when a top player was asked about how good their much younger teen phenom opponent is. Naomi isn't the first and won't be the last to answer that question.

2 years ago a lot of the top guys were being asked how good Shapovalov is

by Anonymousreply 368September 1, 2019 12:59 AM

[quote] Why is Chris Evert making excuses for Coco losing!

Because she’s the World’s Worst Tennis Commentator.

by Anonymousreply 369September 1, 2019 12:59 AM

[quote] Mary’s husband is Coco’s manager

Husband?

by Anonymousreply 370September 1, 2019 1:00 AM

Berrettini is so sexy.

by Anonymousreply 371September 1, 2019 1:00 AM

R364 yes the media is putting too much pressure on her but by contrast some of the posts here are doing the exact opposite. Some of you are acting like Gauff sucks and is some hopeless scrub. She is 15 and has already had great results. Beating Venus in her first main draw slam match is impressive even if Venus is no longer near her best.

Gauff then won the DC doubles title and got to the third round here. She is very promising. Obviously her game isn't fully matured yet and who knows exactly how good she'll be but there's a lot of upside

by Anonymousreply 372September 1, 2019 1:02 AM

and so called "tennis experts" like drysdale and gilbert actually stated before the match they thought it could go either way and that drysdale himself said 52-48 he favored coco for the win?..

time to put both of these two out to pasture...

if only i could get the BBC broadcast!

by Anonymousreply 373September 1, 2019 1:20 AM

I enjoyed Virginia Wade calling the Andreescu match this afternoon. Dry wit.

by Anonymousreply 374September 1, 2019 1:27 AM

R370, Tony Godsick is married to Mary Jo Fernandez. Tony also manages Federer. Federer and Tony own Tennis 8 which manages Coco and a few other players.

by Anonymousreply 375September 1, 2019 1:28 AM

fernandez husband is federer's agent...

the whole world of tennis is very nepotism and who you know and connections,... i mean that young amitraj guy on tennis channel, getting paid to travel the world and attend all the tournaments and interview players and what not.. and his experience and qualifications for this dream job is???? broadcasting/journalism degree? years in the trenches? NOPE!..last name is his resume..

alexandra stevenson? tennis channel digs her up when no one has heard from her in anyway for like 20 years! and her qualifications as a "tennis expert/commentator" is/are?... ..

jan michael gambill on tennis channel commentating?

jimmy arias on tennis channel commentating and head of u.s.t.a. development? really?

of course the greatest nepotism and connections career are the holy 3 of the mcenroe brothers and mary carillo..

by Anonymousreply 376September 1, 2019 1:29 AM

Somebody needs to tell Rublev that his hair is being broadcast around the world.

by Anonymousreply 377September 1, 2019 1:34 AM

Who's the annoying ESPN commentator covering the Monfils-Shapovalov match? He just drones on and on like Tom Hanks with lockjaw.

by Anonymousreply 378September 1, 2019 1:35 AM

R377, very funny. It’s a terrible hairstyle.

by Anonymousreply 379September 1, 2019 1:37 AM

What is Kyrgios complaining about? Something about his eyes? And he got eyedrops during a changeover in the first set.

by Anonymousreply 380September 1, 2019 1:39 AM

Shapo is cute.

by Anonymousreply 381September 1, 2019 1:43 AM

If you like bland Wonder Bread looks.

by Anonymousreply 382September 1, 2019 1:44 AM

R380 You'd want something for your eyes too if you had to face Rublev.

by Anonymousreply 383September 1, 2019 1:45 AM

Youzhny is still quite pretty.

by Anonymousreply 384September 1, 2019 2:01 AM

I love you, R383.

by Anonymousreply 385September 1, 2019 2:03 AM

Nick's not exactly easy on the eyes either.

by Anonymousreply 386September 1, 2019 2:09 AM

R386 True, unless you happen to be into guys with that "Alice the Goon" silhouette.

by Anonymousreply 387September 1, 2019 2:14 AM

Little Shapovhorrors

by Anonymousreply 388September 1, 2019 2:18 AM

Rublev looks like Mrs. Danvers if she’d had a sex change during a long internment at Dachau.

by Anonymousreply 389September 1, 2019 2:22 AM

why is Shapovalov's mother wearing biker or workout gloves (the fingers are exposed but palms and back of hands covered)?

Monfills wow. He had 5-3 in the 4th set. Flopped. Then Shapovalov was up 5-2 in the tiebreak and serving. Then Monfils went up 6-5 but ended up flopping. Now they're going 5

by Anonymousreply 390September 1, 2019 2:26 AM

maybe psoriasis

by Anonymousreply 391September 1, 2019 2:30 AM

maybe arthritis

by Anonymousreply 392September 1, 2019 2:34 AM

Shapovalov is not hot by any stretch of the imagination.

by Anonymousreply 393September 1, 2019 2:34 AM

You know who has some sexy fucking legs? Shapavalov. Really muscular and covered in blond hair. Damn.

by Anonymousreply 394September 1, 2019 2:36 AM

Shapo cleans up pretty well off court; but working on the court he don't give a fuck

by Anonymousreply 395September 1, 2019 2:37 AM

Rublev looks like the Little Dutch Boy who stuck his finger in the dike.

by Anonymousreply 396September 1, 2019 2:38 AM

R393 I think he's hot in a trailer-trash way.

by Anonymousreply 397September 1, 2019 2:39 AM

I'm surprised how well Youzhny has aged. He has a permanent tan but he's not covered in wrinkles despite being more fair skinned. He really doesn't look any different than 10 years ago

by Anonymousreply 398September 1, 2019 2:42 AM

Are Berrettini and Tsitsipas the best looking guys in tennis?

by Anonymousreply 399September 1, 2019 2:43 AM

wow a subdued Kyrgios goes out in straights.

RUblev was outhitting him. Kyrgios blew a 4-0 lead in the second set tiebreak. He started leaking errors and Rublev regained momentum

by Anonymousreply 400September 1, 2019 2:45 AM

Kyrgios really blew it in the second set tiebreak; this should have gone four or five seats. He doesn't have the mental strength.

by Anonymousreply 401September 1, 2019 2:48 AM

GEMSLife!

by Anonymousreply 402September 1, 2019 2:53 AM

Denis is such a flop.

by Anonymousreply 403September 1, 2019 2:54 AM

So happy to see La Monf through to the round of 16 and Kyrgios out. Monfils should school Kyrgios on how to entertain and keep it all positive. Also glad that Luke Jensen will now shut his motormouth about Kyrgios taking the whole thing.

by Anonymousreply 404September 1, 2019 3:07 AM

so tomorrow starts with Federer vs. Goffin...Roger has been sloppy but he was good last round. Can David actually make it a competitive match?

Serena vs. Martic should be a blow out really. Martic needs time to hit her shots

Svitolina vs. Keys the question is how's Madison's health? She was unwell yesterday against Kenin

Djokovic vs. Wawrinka. I think this'll be fun. Stan is playing better lately

Barty vs. Q. Wang should be straight sets for Ashley

Pliskova vs. Konta could be an upset. I haven't seen Konta play yet this tournament but she's doing better and Pliskova hasn't looked good but had an easy draw

Medvedev vs. Koepfer Koepfer surprised against Opelka and Medvedev might have to deal with another hostile crowd lol

Dimitrov vs. De Minaur looking forward to this one too. De Minaur will likely grind Grigor to death but will have some fun points

by Anonymousreply 405September 1, 2019 3:08 AM

Also looking forward to the Dimitrov-de Minaur match.

Medvedev needs a Gunter Parche intervention.

by Anonymousreply 406September 1, 2019 3:16 AM

Tehe, R388.

by Anonymousreply 407September 1, 2019 3:22 AM

Were they asked how good Shapo is after just beating him? NO ONE is saying Gauff sucks.

by Anonymousreply 408September 1, 2019 3:23 AM

More Rafa ass.

by Anonymousreply 409September 1, 2019 3:35 AM

What is Shapo’s skin color?

by Anonymousreply 410September 1, 2019 3:36 AM

What is the skin color joke? Don't get it.

Kyrgios is just weak in the head. I was impressed with Rublev's fight. He's going to go far.

by Anonymousreply 411September 1, 2019 3:18 PM

Good for Wang!

by Anonymousreply 412September 1, 2019 4:54 PM

I loved how BG stated the facts. Osaka delivered a beat down.
