“Pizzagate” and the Nocturnal Ritual Fantasy: Imaginary Cults, Fake News, and Real Violence

This is Part XIX of The Public Medievalist’s continuing series on Race, Racism and the Middle Ages, by Michael Barbezat.

------------

Apersistent delusion exists Western culture: that shadowy, conspiratorial groups gather together in secret—preferably at night—to plot the overthrow of society. As part of their plotting, the conspirators supposedly ritually abuse, murder, and consume innocent children.

Ideas about this conspiracy have appeared repeatedly throughout our history. Historian Norman Cohn called this recurrent conspiracy theory “the nocturnal ritual fantasy.” Cohn argues that imperial Romans made these claims against early Christians; later medieval Christian authorities, in turn, made similar allegations against Christian heretics, Jews, and so-called “witches”. Belief in the nocturnal ritual delusion helped to justify deadly violence against these marginalized groups, and, in fact, played an important role in establishing their very marginality.

In all cases, the claims were false. They were nothing more than the imagined behaviour of fantastical enemies that existed more in the minds of those who feared them than in reality. The recent “Pizzagate Conspiracy” that came to a head during and in the wake of the recent American presidential election is a modern form of the nocturnal ritual fantasy. In this modern shape it is just as threatening as its past manifestations, with the threat of violence inherent in those who believe it.

It’s actually really important to be aware of the historical patterns of persecutory mobs so you should read this fucking article.

by Anonymousreply 4August 31, 2019 3:33 PM

Are you saying that the rings of powerful men who sexually abuse children is a lie and fabrication?

by Anonymousreply 5August 31, 2019 3:42 PM

Why does the devil -or the personification of evil - have a goat head? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the head of a jackal? Or a pig, since middle easterners won’t eat pig flesh? Or a crocodile? A mosquito? A sand fly? All of these things were more problematic than a goat.

by Anonymousreply 6August 31, 2019 4:10 PM

r5, did you read the article?

by Anonymousreply 7August 31, 2019 4:34 PM

r6, goats are the romantics of the animal kingdom. They fall in cross-species love, day in, day out.

It's worth mentioning that Russian state television constantly accused Hillary Clinton of being a witch and murderer to the Russian people during the 2016 campaign season.

This is a fascinating documentary showing how Trump was promoted and Clinton slandered with constant propaganda on Russia Today:

IOW nutters gonna believe nutty shit and act accordingly.

So much for an educated populace.

by Anonymousreply 11August 31, 2019 5:48 PM

What's interesting is that this exact same story has been repackaged for hundreds of years, just swapping out the nouns for the target of the attacks. It's the exact same fucking story. And if there was not an ongoing and dedicated effort to destroy and stigmatize education, knowledge, facts, intelligence, everything good, the people who got sucked in by this twisted fantasy would have already been aware of its existence and usage in historical acts of persecution.

Republicans always accuse other people of what they themselves were guilty of. Remember that.

Why was Obama's birth certificate such a big deal? Because McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone.

Why did Romney accuse Obama of trying to buy the election? Because Romney's "platform" was a series of fakes trying to buy off this group and that group.

Why was there a Clinton death list? Because the Bushes regularly had people whacked.

Why were the Clintons pedophile conspirators? Well you don't need much understanding of our president to see where that came from.

Why were there all these exposes on vote fraud? Because Republicans have been systematically stealing elections for thirty years.

Why is there an endless daily attack on the "liberal media" Because since they got rid of the fairness doctrine, the conservatives have systematically eliminated all progressive voices from the national airwaves.

Next time a republican tells you why the opposition is evil, you'll know he's confessing his own secrets.

by Anonymousreply 15August 31, 2019 6:26 PM

Why was the Clinton Foundation big news? Because Trump regularly and shamelessly stole from his own foundation

Why is Elizabeth Warren's ancestry a big deal? Because Ted Cruz's ancestry really was a big deal.

Dear r6,

"The devil always has a goat's head" because Christian preachers have been demonizing the Greek gods and spirits heavily since the Middle Ages (see: St. Augustine).

Pan, the Greco-Roman god of livestock, wildlife and pastures, is the spitting image of what Medieval Christians came to see as the devil, demons or Baphomet.

Greco-Roman pagans believed their were thousands of lesser gods like Pan who shared some combination of human, goat and donkey parts — in ANY arrangement. They were called the panoi, satyrs or fauns and all of them were defenders of wildlife and livestock that people used for food. They could be beneficial or cruel to humans, but Christianity taught the people of Europe to regard them all as evil demons, servants of Satan, or Satan himself.

The Bible itself says that Satan was born as a "cherub" and can appear as an "angel of light," (2 Corinthians: 11:14):

But the Bible also says Satan appeared to Adam and Eve as a serpent.

It also says Satan appeared to the Apostle John in a vision as "a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth ..."

Nothing very Pan-sounding in the Bible.

However, the Bible does describe the Antichrist as a false prophet to come, who was revealed to John as a "beast," "and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon." (Revelation: 13:11).

So the Bible could be talking about a goat-man here. But the Antichrist is just a false prophet, earthly king and servant of Satan, not Satan himself.

And here's a 19th-century rendering of Baphomet — the very deity the Knights Templar were accused of worshiping, as mentioned in the OP's article.

It's the Sabbatic Goat — or demonized version of the panoi — which Christians interpreted all as evil demons, if not Satan himself.

FWIW, r6, ancient pagans and Christians always HAVE envisioned gods and spirits with any and all combinations of animal and/or human parts.

There are traditions of boar demons, Egyptian gods had jackal and crocodile parts, which were demonized by Christians. And if you want a nasty insect, look no further than Beelzebub, another incarnation of Satan:

TBH, stupid people don't care about the distinction so fuck it.

Bible beaters and their I'll are the dumbest, most gullible fools on Earth. And they never bother to examine their OWN shortcomings. No. They're too busy worrying about what's going on in other people's bedrooms and pants.

[quote] It's the exact same fucking story.

The fascist conspiracy theories of the early 1900s up to WWI sound almost exactly like the Deep State conspiracies we hear today. That anti-semitic "look at all the Jews in media/entertainment" meme going around looks just like the lists of Jews fascist papers would print, photos included.

by Anonymousreply 30September 2, 2019 6:13 PM

Pizzagate and a lot of the shit around pedo rings is paranoid garbage. There has been a distinct moral panic around kids and pedophilia for a while now without a lot of concrete evidence...

However, massive-scale pedo rings have been busted before, especially in the 80s and 90s. Many of the people involved are still alive. Look up the pimp/pornographer John Norman and his arrest in the late 70s, it's quite a tale, and factual as can be (every bit of it can be verified in police and FBI reports, also reports in the Chicago Sun at the time), including the fact that the lists Norman compiled of his customers over the years both disappeared from police evidence. As in, they had a complete list of all Norman's pedo customers, complete with details as to their preferences, even photographs in many cases. One officer stated that a cursory look revealed many prominent figures from major cities in Texas.

There's a whole sordid rabbit hole there, including verifiable connections between Norman and the likes of Dean Corll (many of whose victims appeared in kiddie porn seized shortly after he was killed by an accomplice in busts that were the result of Corll's associates telling what they knew) and Gacy.

Kiddie porn and kiddie prostitution was a massive industry right up into the 80s, and probably does still exist, it's just more sophisticated and better concealed.

The worst thing about Pizzagate is that, being stupid bullshit believed by morons, it's the boy who cried wolf. Any valid evidence of kids being exploited in an organized way is now more prone to dismissal.
