My point wasn't about their looks per se, but that these guys that are being radicalized look like they could be neighbors, co-workers. They look pretty regular.

All extremists are intellectually shallow and rely more on appearances (e.g Nazi uniforms) than any rigorous ideological thought, or any reasoned thought at all. The fact of the matter is, the US is in the incipient stages of fascism; they can look normal now, because their views are normalized.

They look normal because they are still so very young.

The problem with this argument is that "black" and "Hispanic" and "Asian" are routinely used as pejorative terms in the same sense. Until that changes, whites aren't entitled to a free pass.

But many of the angry folks in this area pissed away their educations, made fun of anyone in their class who was smart or paid attention, and assumed they'd have a job in a factory paying 75K a year. Didn't happen.

I grew up in this area. Even though they were of rural origins themselves, my parents found the locals unfriendly, ethnically bigoted - the Poles against the Serbs against the Italians against the Germans - and the schools were awful. For years I was surprised at the opportunities my peers had in their schools in other parts of the country - we only had the basics. They local system was designed to push kids through until they could get a steel mill, mining or factory job.

Even though we lived in large-ish towns, everything was run on a small-town-like "who-you-know" system based on ethnicities and church memberships. My parents tried hard to create alternate opportunities for us kids and to teach us that the local way of life was not sustainable. By 1982 my parents saw the economic writing on the wall and bailed. None of my extended family lives in the area anymore. Over a million people moved out of the region in the 80s. I haven't been since 2004.
