Dicks abound in HBO’s new megachurch satire The Righteous Gemstones. Several of those dicks are metaphorical: The three siblings (series creator Danny McBride, Adam Devine, and Edi Patterson) who make up the heirs to the flashy, globe-spanning, Bible-thumping Gemstone empire are bumbling at their best and selfish to the core. But many more of those dicks are literal: The series is chockablock with cock, with at least one flaccid member (usually human but in one case equine) making an appearance in each of the first six episodes that were made available to critics. In interviews, the cast and crew have boasted about the surfeit of schlongs as part of the show’s balls-to-the-wall appeal—and even as an example of its progressive bona fides. “There is an episode that has about six dicks in it,” Patterson told a Variety reporter last month. “This show is not afraid of anything.” Added Devine: “I’m happy it’s making [male nudity] less taboo, because women have been naked in movies for decades.”
Danny McBride’s new HBO Show has penises in every episode
by Anonymous | reply 121 | October 16, 2019 2:38 AM |
If you’ve seen an R-rated dudebro comedy in the past decade, you know that a flash of peen is now less an act of subversion than an obligatory trope of the genre, its ability to shock more dependent on timing than the nudity itself. Blame—or credit—Judd Apatow. In this, as in so many things, 2007’s Walk Hard was ahead of its time. That movie, which Apatow co-wrote and co-produced, featured full-frontal nudity both male and female. But it was Jason Segel’s self-exhibition in 2008’s hit comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall, another Apatow production, that took the lion’s share of the glory. “The two latest movies to come off the Judd Apatow assembly line have finally recognized a comic truth long known to women everywhere,” Slate movie critic Dana Stevens wrote in her review. “The unerect human penis is inherently funny.” But Apatow claimed that it was about more than laughs. “America fears the penis, and that’s something I’m going to help them get over,” he told Hollywood.com. “I’m going to get a penis in every movie I do from now on.” Lesser filmmakers have been far less socially conscious about surprise sausages, but it’s undeniable that, in the years since, male nudity has become a mainstay on both the big and small screens, with Apatow’s own penis making an apparent cameo in 2016’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Are they real dicks? A lot of HBO programs use prosthetics.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 17, 2019 5:42 PM |
R2 you mean fake dicks?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 17, 2019 5:45 PM |
Adam Devine showed his dick in a movie not too long ago. It was a weird crimson color. It looked diseased. Not hot.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 17, 2019 5:47 PM |
Penises in mainstream movies are meant to be a crude joke, to shock the repulsed audience
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 17, 2019 5:49 PM |
Just browsed through the cast list on imdb. Don't care to see John Goodman's penis. No one else I recognize.

Wonderful. As long as it's hot.

Why are you here?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 17, 2019 6:28 PM |
Not Danny McBride's penis, I hope.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 17, 2019 6:42 PM |
A thousand penises couldn't drag me through Danny McBride's "comedy."
This is more proof that he's the laziest, trashiest "comedian" working. Being funny is more than just saying "fuck" and showing penises.
It's bad enough that I have to put up with him stinking up the new HALLOWEEN movies.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 17, 2019 6:44 PM |
More like Chris Zylka from the Leftovers and less Judd Apatow please.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 17, 2019 6:46 PM |
My goodness, R13!
This is what happened when I googled Mr. Zykla....
...it looks, um, girthy.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 17, 2019 7:36 PM |
Just started watching the first episode and so far Danny McBride is his typical self, pretty funny stuff. No penis sighting yet....

Nice cut cock on Chris Zylka at R14. Big balls, too.

What the hell happened to HBO? OZ was cock city, cocks everywhere, jesus we even saw Chris Meloni taking a piss onscreen.
Now they behave like a mullulunial doing the towel dance in the gym shower terrified someone will catch a glimpse of the sacred cock. Or they use plastic cocks. Pisses me off
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 19, 2019 7:33 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 19, 2019 12:45 PM |
Not surprising r21, the penises are meant to be comedic, not erotic.
I thought the first episode was okay, I'm not in love with it but I'll give it another episode or two. Is Adam Devine's character supposed to be a closet case? I got that vibe, that would certainly make me more interested.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 19, 2019 12:48 PM |
I liked the first episode but the tone and the delivery by the actors both read like sketch comedy than an actual dramedy to me. Which is fine, I'm just not used to watching that as much. Very interested in what happens next, especially if the younger brother is truly fucking that former Satanist guy.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 19, 2019 5:51 PM |
The younger brother is the weak link. I have seen him in interviews and he is annoying IRL too
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 20, 2019 6:40 AM |
I didn't realize Adam Devine has some womanly hips and knock-knees.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 20, 2019 12:48 PM |
I'm definitely into the show. I think the sister's the funniest. "Slap me too, Daddy. I'm a Gemstone, so slap my face," was genuinely hilarious. Who plays the Satanist. I want him and Adam Devine to eventually kiss.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 20, 2019 2:30 PM |
The show ain’t bad
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 20, 2019 8:46 PM |
I watched a few episodes of Eastbound and Down - got a few chuckles before I lost interest. I tried Vice Principals but that did not grab me at all. I saw the preview for TRG and figured why not - I need a new comedy since Veep ended. I laughed a lot at this show and hope it stays funny.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 24, 2019 1:41 AM |
Anyone watching? Should this be the official Righteous Gemstones thread? I thought the second episode was good. Skyler Gisondo's such a little cutie! I'm glad he'll be a part of the show. I enjoy watching these characters, but I wonder what the main thrust of the narrative's going to be.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 26, 2019 5:11 AM |

I saw partial ball.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 26, 2019 9:13 AM |
Maybe I was tired when I watched it but I kept giggling. Danny McBride's character bossing his flunkies around and the sister's boyfriend cumming too soon, just idiotic stuff that make me laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 26, 2019 9:44 AM |
So Danny McBride is EXACTLY the same in every role.
I was in the other room and I heard some of his dialogue and I said to myself "Oh, This is the End's on"
Find some range, buddy.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 26, 2019 10:12 AM |
R34 The boyfriend cumming prematurely was hilarious.
R35 I get the critique, and agree with it to an extent, but his sensibilities work really well for this show. It helps that it's more of an ensemble cast as well.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 26, 2019 3:14 PM |
Of course Danny McBride only plays the Danny McBride character, you know exactly what you are getting with him and he carved out a career doing it. I usually like the other members of the ensemble better, but obviously there is a market for his humor.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 26, 2019 3:30 PM |
Why he so fat and sick lookin? almost unrecognizable....funny fuk tho
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 27, 2019 12:37 AM |
I loved McBride's previous HBO show, "Vice Principals", co-starring Walton Goggins. It was hysterically funny yet bittersweet at the same time. I'd never seen anything else he was in. I'll probably give the new one a try.

My interest in the series is still based on whether Adam Devine's character is gay. They seem to be teasing that, I'm not sure I like it enough to keep watching it without the gay angle.

I love Danny. He knows his limitations and uses them perfectly. Yeah, he always plays the same character . . . what else could he possibly do with those looks? Some poster up above said he needs to work on his range. How? To what?
He has no chin, permanent puffy under-eye bags, and a kinky mullet. He's perfect and so are his characters.

There were about 5 full frontal cocks on display tonight, with corresponding bare asses. The bad news is that they were attached to some pretty unfit middle-aged white guys. Good for a laugh , though.

Adam Devine always comes across that way.

I got a hinky feeling from that guy taunting Gideon with the hot dog on a stick. It gave me the vibe of implied sexual intimidation and dominance. I don't remember hearing how these guys teamed up in the first place - was it jail? Are they a twisted couple? Will it come out that Jesse so pissed at his son Gideon because he noticed something 'different' about him?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 2, 2019 3:38 AM |
He is the only child without a love interest, and and the only established relationship is with his male companion. The most episode ends with him literally looking up at the genitals of that companion.

Not bad so far. Definitely much darker than I expected, but all Danny McBride/Jody Hill collaborations tend that way.
I’m disappointed at how small John Goodman’s role has been so far. What’s keeping him busy enough that he can’t give the time to HBO?

by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 4, 2019 5:53 AM |
I don’t think so. Most HBO shows are completely filmed before they ever air the season, and The Conners do like, 8 episodes a year. A sitcom episode is rehearsed in a week and shot in a day.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 4, 2019 6:03 AM |

I really liked Vice Principals, mostly because Walter Goggins and Danny McBride together are hilarious.
Goggins is high strung and neurotic, McBride is gross and lackadaisical. They play off each other's quirks really well. Hopefully, they have plenty of scenes together.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | September 5, 2019 7:49 PM |

r85 There absolutely is a meaty dick in the fourth episode; it's one of the guys on the dance floor. You probably missed it because of the strobing lights and fast cuts.

I thought this week’s episode was more sad than funny. There was dick shown; however the dick shown was a horse ( gross). They also made a point of showing McBride’s character as a young teen’s crotch quite a bit when he was getting drunk which was odd also.

TV Guide liked it here:
Most fun extortion story: Netflix's The Family, which details the secret, but ongoing collapse of America's foundational tenet of separation of church and state, contains some shocking truths about the inner workings of the American government. But if you're just too fatigued to wade any more serious political waters of that nature, The Righteous Gemstones offers a much more entertaining take on the business of megachurches. Danny McBride delivers some more of that ridiculous character work that made Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals such delights as his baptism-happy alter ego here is blackmailed for leading a double life as a seedy partier who pretends to be a religious conservative.
