The partner wanted to join one a few years ago. They required payment by debit card only, not credit card. Nobody gets access to our checking account.
We wound up joining a different gym.

We have a gym like this in NYC called Blink. Like $15/mo basically a place to shit or shower in a pinch. I’m surprised more homeless don’t have memberships.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 25, 2019 9:10 PM |
There was an article about Weight Watches some years back and they had no problem with members dropping out before reaching their goal because they knew they would come back and they could charge them all the sign up fees again. It was never about helping anyone lose weight, just charging them as much money as possible.

by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 25, 2019 9:24 PM |
R3 Blink is not only in NYC, and its not shitty. They use the same exact equipment as Equinox and are the little brother gym to them. They just are smaller and dont have the luxuries of Equinox.
And they are not only very clean, but very professional.
And why do you all knock people that go to PF? At least theyre at least attempting to better themselves.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 25, 2019 9:26 PM |
I joined it about eleven years ago, I think they were just getting started. You can't beat $10 a month with no joining fee, at least that's what it was then. It was on the way home from work so I never really passed it. It's no frills, my didn't even have a steam room as someone stated above, but I wasn't looking for classes or anything like that. Just ellipticals and weights.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 25, 2019 9:35 PM |
I hated it. The very first day I used it, I was reprimanded for being "too aggressive" with the weights. They said I was intimidating the other customers because they weren't at my level yet. WTF? So I'm supposed to dumb myself down so as to not offend others? I still stuck it out for 4 months, but I just couldn't take it anymore. For a place that calls themselves a "free judgment zone," I felt judged every time I went in there. Another time I was told that I couldn't wear revealing shirts like my tank top.
They also offered free pizza and bagels at the beginning of every month, which I found weird and counterproductive.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 25, 2019 9:36 PM |
I'm a member but I'm not fat. I had a knee injury 2 years ago and developed severe nerve pain, to which many months of PT was prescribed. I had to continue on my own with exercises and Planet Fitness was great for someone who had a lot of trouble getting around. It took me over a year to get back to where I was pre-injury, and now I keep going because it is cheap and convenient and never too crowded like I've found other gyms.
I notice there are many disabled people there for a gym, people with walkers, canes, and blind. Quite a few elderly too, but also there are a fair share of hotties. I would say there is something for everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 25, 2019 9:44 PM |
I went to Planet Fitness back in the late 2000s. When I was moving and wanted to quit I couldn’t just cancel over the phone or online, I actually had to write them a letter. I shit you not.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 25, 2019 10:13 PM |
I've been a member for 3 years now. Average about 4x a week and it is well worth the $20/month.
I get admission to any PF (I travel frequently) plus massage and tanning. It is the closest gym to my house and when I travel there is one in pretty much every city I go to.
Never tried their food treats. I only go at night when hardly anyone is there due to my work schedule.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 25, 2019 10:35 PM |
I live in Wash Heights, NYC and go to the one at Broadway and 158. Pay 10.68 month. Some very hot men there, but also some regular people too. I go 3 or 4 times a week. Every now and then a cute twink will Tap my Grindr and say hey Daddy saw you today and we go from there. I have nothing bad to say about PF at all.... best value in NYC
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 25, 2019 11:44 PM |

[quote]Planet Fitness is a big, purple-colored adult daycare marketed to people afraid to go to an actual gym.

R20 your darkness is not welcome here!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 26, 2019 5:06 AM |
If they have most of what Golds gym has then the price is right if you're going to work out. If you're going there to be seen and stare at people then probably not.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 26, 2019 5:09 AM |
The "adult daycare" line is amusing in isolation. But the full essay by aggro dude linked at r20 is too mean and dumb to be funny. Setting aside his personal devotion to making constant progress in the world of lifting heavier things (there is no such thing as limits! Diminishing returns are your fault for not eating right or not trying hard enough!) and his not-supported-by-science belief that permanent weight loss is an achievable goal for most people, he unintentionally convinced me in the moral soundness of the PF business plan. Pool all that aspirational fatty money together to create a gym that's accessible to the lowest of fatties when they are in the mood to actually work out! He states that 67% of people with gym memberships never use them, and the number is even higher for PF because the cost of entry is so low and the members even less committed to fitness. So what? If you join a gym and never go then you are simply subsidizing the place for the members who do. Nobody wants to subsidize the gym for Gassy Gus. PF allows the self-conscious chubsters to subsidize each other. It's kind of sweet.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 26, 2019 5:45 AM |
I went to one in Brooklyn as it was the closest to me. The equipment was good. I went there in my gym clothes, worked out, and showered at home. I never talk to anyone when I work out. I had the luxury of going when people were at their 9to5 so it was fine.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 26, 2019 6:20 AM |
I have a membership at PF. I like their gyms a lot. As someone said before, I travel for work and there is usually one near. They are usually clean and you can get a great workout. I really do not understand all the hate.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 26, 2019 7:21 AM |
The owner is republican, what I have always found strange is this: Around November 2016 or so, Melania announced anti-bully campaign if she was to become the first lady. I was working out at PF and I heard the owner rolling out a huge anti-bullying campaign in a similar vein to Melania. Hillary was almost certainly the winner at that point, and I thought: "Boy, it is dumb to go with the campaign platform of a loser." What you know, Trump won and almost as if the PF owner knows where the bread will be buttered.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 26, 2019 8:00 AM |
I'd never join a gym that didn't have a steamroom or sauna.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 26, 2019 8:29 AM |
I used to go to NYSC but realized I could save up about $50/mo by switching to PF. They basically have same facilities and equipment and the ratio of hot guys is about equal. so now so have extra money to eat out more often😋

by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 26, 2019 11:15 AM |
I go to one in the suburbs. It is nasty. Seriously. Never clean. Machines often broken. The front desk staff looks furious anytime anyone actually shows up. The so-called trainer spends all his time trying to pick up the few attractive women who work out. The showers are filthy.
It's $10 a month. You get what you pay for. I wish there were a closer gym but I'd have to drive pretty far to get to one. To me. That's the only reason I, and most other people go there. Proximity.
It's known around town as Planet Shitness.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 26, 2019 11:56 AM |
r35 Yea that part confused me, sure lots of people will cut back on going to gyms in a recession but wouldn't PF get some kind of benefit for being relatively cheap compared to others.

Wake up! CrossFit and functional fitness is where it’s at, not these tired gyms. Better results and many of these smaller gyms are locally owned (mine is lesbian owned, too). If you work out at Equinox, you might as well be going to Planet Fitness, because both have republican connections.

We've all seen this. People who go the gym and walk around running their mouths and don't do fuck all. They get zero gains.
I went to a gym and spent the entire 45 minutes I was there working out hard and got great gains.

I go to one here in Vermont. It's clean, not crowded when I go, and it gets me off my ass. Do I want to be Mr. Universe? No, and that will never happen. I"m a diabetic and I need to lose weight. I'm doing it. People put PF down because it isn't "SERIOUS" about bodybuilding. That's not what it is there for. You can start out there and move on to BB gyms if that's what you want. I just want to get some exercise without some anal compulsive man-boy loudly complaining that he can't do his routine RIGHT NOW.

I was a PF member for years. Then I joined Blink because I heard it was "nicer". Here in NYC both are largely filled with teenage boys who work out together and hog machines. I finally joined a local no-frills gym with other adults, and it is infinitely better.

150 dollars per year is a price that can not be beat,10 dollars a mouth. You spend 10 dollars per day visiting Starbucks ! Most chains rely on that model of ' most members not showing up and not cancelling their membership'.

[R48] you are welcome! And [R49] I’ve met some of the nicest, kindest people in CrossFit and functional fitness gyms. There’s a sense of community that you don’t find in traditional gyms, plus the results are so much better because you’re out of your comfort zone. Climbing ropes, handstand push-ups and all kinds of barbell movements challenge your body and give you a feeling of accomplishment. Like I mentioned before, they’re usually locally owned, mine is lesbian owned. The real arrogant doucheboobs are the ones that own mega gyms like PF and Equinox and support Trump.

All 100% true, R53/R59 but DL is not the audience for it.
"Exercise" to them is either 20 minutes on the elliptical twice a week (which TBH is a lot better than doing nothing) or lots of bicep curls and steroids to get in shape for the next White Party.
Mobility is the area people over 50 should be focusing on as it's the best way to prevent injuries. My brother and I got my parents on board with that about two years ago (they're mid-60s) and it's made a big difference.

I belonged to a gym before I moved to another state, and some long-timers there told me about what a sleazy business it is. They are usually never owned by the same people for very long; as soon as the owners meet their membership goals and make the changes they wish to make, they sell it as soon as they can make a profit and then the process repeats itself under the new owners. They don’t care if people get healthy as long as they get paid.

Some of you are really confused what gyms like this are for. I can't imagine saying to 98% of Americans, "don't do normal exercise, join crossfit!" Crossfit is for athletes. It's for people who want to train to do superhero stuff (I mean that in a nice way).
These gyms are for everyone. Anyone who knows what they're doing, eats right, and does hard workouts will look amazing. They're also for the other 95% of the population who benefit from basic exercise. Moving their bodies for a few hours per week, lifting light weights, and maintaining some level of fitness that keeps their bodies "in shape" to live life (in addition to all the biological benefits that come from exercise like reduced stress, good brain chemistry, etc). And that older lady you see not working that hard might be burning the 200 calories per day she's overeating... Nobody ever said the point of calorie reduction was so you wouldn't need to exercise at all. So by going to the gym four days per week, she's burning the equivalent of 40 lbs per year.
Its hilarious how many of you think of gyms as a place people go for "gains" or to get a six pack. There's nothing wrong with that goal. That's not about general health though, which is why most people go to gyms. If you see a fat person working out and don't think they're working out that hard, its better than them being on the couch.
