GOAT: Simone Biles wins 6th National Title

In doing so she unveils two new elements, double double off the balance beam and a triple twisting double back on floor.

And she embraces being called GOAT by having a bedazzled goat on her leotard.

Commentators say no one can argue her status...

But they can argue her gymnastics is atrocious to watch.

OP, who is likely to be our Olympic Team? I know Biles can basically just show up and make it.

I saw Laurie Hernandez do an interview, but I have my doubts. She seems like she's tapped out of that level of competition.

by Anonymousreply 1August 12, 2019 3:20 AM

R1

My guess is that it's going to be Biles, Hurd, McCusker and the fourth and alternate going to either Carey, Skinner, or Lee.

No way Hernandez makes it back.

by Anonymousreply 2August 12, 2019 3:26 AM

I'm here bitches

by Anonymousreply 3August 12, 2019 3:31 AM

I love her. What she did on the balance beam was amazing, but it was not clean. She has a tendency to wobble/bobble on the most simple elements, and it takes me out of the "moment" as it were.

That said, I'm eating sour cream and cheddar Ruffles with a coke as I type so what the fuck do I know?

by Anonymousreply 4August 12, 2019 3:40 AM

[quote]That said, I'm eating sour cream and cheddar Ruffles with a coke as I type so what the fuck do I know?

To be fair, you were an Olympic Gold Medalist, even when you were eating that shit back then, Amanda. But yeah, we did carry your fat ass and would have won without you.

by Anonymousreply 5August 12, 2019 3:45 AM

She often needs amphetamine to compete, I really can't buy her shit wholeheartedly. MEH!

by Anonymousreply 6August 12, 2019 3:47 AM

I cheer for Simone. I think she's a very inspiring young lady. But I don't understand why she is allowed to compete with amphetamine (Adderall?) in her system.

by Anonymousreply 7August 12, 2019 3:58 AM

R6 and R7 Back up guys. I'm taking a break from my chips and coke to ask is that really true? I have not followed gymnastics many, many (many) pounds ago, so I am out of the loop. Is Simone really taking Adderall? How is that allowed?

by Anonymousreply 8August 12, 2019 4:10 AM

R8 she has a, "medical waiver."

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 9August 12, 2019 4:13 AM

Thanks R9. I am glad I know now, but I do find it disturbing. I wonder if she applied for this "waiver" today in light of all of the shit going down in the gymnastics world if she would still be approved.

Part of me thinks she should have gotten ahead of this story when she first started taking it (if it was indeed for legit reasons). Her not doing so, makes it look to me like she was being undercover/only if they find out about it. There is no shame in having ADD/ADHD, but I guess she didn't want everyone pointing at her as a cheat if she did a difficult and clean routine.

NOW, though it seems as though she is still getting pointed at when she does a difficult and clean routine (again I see she is a wobbler, and I have rarely seen a truly clean routine from her).

This is part of how Lance Armstrong (and other cyclists) got in the door with PEDs. He had a legit issue, got the medication, performed better, then got greedy. However he is a fucking sociopath, and I don't think Biles is at all, but she certainly has a strong competitive drive.

So, since I have been out of the loop, what is the consensus with other gymnast fans? Does she get the side eye now, or a pass, or...?

by Anonymousreply 10August 12, 2019 4:32 AM

I'm not really in the loop either but I vibe that the majority of fans like her.

My issue is that sure, she's phenomenal in terms of what she can do and she's done all these skills and won all these medals so she gets to be called GOAT, however nobody puts it into context. She's not having to do what other athletes in the past have had to do, train and compete compulsories, entirely different scoring system, the equipment is far superior to what it was even just 10 years ago (making it much easier and safer to train difficult skills - floor gives you extra bounce, etc), age restrictions, and she gets to not focus on artistry or form, which everyone can agree, hers is atrocious.

by Anonymousreply 11August 12, 2019 4:40 AM

And she gets to compete with amphetamines!

by Anonymousreply 12August 12, 2019 4:41 AM

I love her powerful gymnastics, but let's face it, Simone has no artistry. Those wolf turns are atrocious to watch.

I want a return to beautiful, graceful gymnastics.

by Anonymousreply 13August 12, 2019 4:47 AM

Thanks for all of the input. I thought I was just being cunty and fat, but she really doesn't have much artistry to speak of. It comes off as a lot of stomping around, sloppy mistakes (Hand down? Who cares? I put in an extra element!) cringey postures that don't hold form, etc., just so she can (possibly) stick a difficult landing. I've noticed that many of these "stuck" landings often involve a sideways hop disguised as an "I meant to do that" turn to face the judges or audience.

by Anonymousreply 14August 12, 2019 4:59 AM

Let's be real. If she actually had to focus on artistry, form, and keeping her legs together and straight, she'd barely be pulling off double backs.

by Anonymousreply 15August 12, 2019 1:03 PM

I find her delightful as a person, but I do take her accomplishments with a grain of salt due to the Adderall. It isn't really a level playing field. And imagine the amount of shit she would get if she competed for any country other than Murrica with that "medical waiver."

by Anonymousreply 16August 12, 2019 2:21 PM

And to think I fucking lost my Gold Medal for taking a fucking flu medication that was prescribed to me by Olympic Doctors that had an ingredient that INHIBITS my fucking performance!!!

by Anonymousreply 17August 12, 2019 2:30 PM

I take Biles' wins with a grain of salt as well, not because of the Adderall, but mostly because her dominance is largely in part to the change in scoring that allows her to compete really difficult skills, with atrocious form as mentioned, and a lot of the times no mastery of them. She can do a triple twisting double back, fall on it, and still easily win.

That wouldn't happen under the old scoring system. A fall was more serious than it is now. You were decimated if you fell and therefore, if you couldn't consistently pull something off, and cleanly, you couldn't compete it. Simone is given the benefit of knowing she can fall on her ass and still get massive points based on the value of the skill alone.

by Anonymousreply 18August 12, 2019 2:34 PM

She's amazing. Gravity's got nothing on her.

by Anonymousreply 19August 12, 2019 6:52 PM

Gymnastics has lost all drama with this awful new system (how you can fall multiple times and win a gold medal is beyond me). The only reason it's still so popular here is because America has gamed this new system and dominates, starting with Simone.

She's the greatest of all time, sure, ok, and yet I'd rather watch YouTube of Amanar, Shoushonova, Szabo, Dawes, Miller, Zmeskal.

by Anonymousreply 20August 12, 2019 7:53 PM

Nadia was the last one with both strength and artistry.

by Anonymousreply 21August 12, 2019 7:56 PM

Go fuck yourself, Nadia at R21.

You weren't shit.

by Anonymousreply 22August 12, 2019 8:28 PM

Zmeskal, poor thing just can't catch a break.

by Anonymousreply 23August 13, 2019 12:36 AM

I loved Boguinskaya. She could be artistic, alluring, and seductive while doing her gymnastics.

by Anonymousreply 24August 13, 2019 12:44 AM

If I want grace, I’ll watch ballet.

by Anonymousreply 25August 13, 2019 2:38 AM

[quote] , but she really doesn't have much artistry to speak of.

Which gymnasts these days do?

She throws incredible difficulty rather cleanly though.

by Anonymousreply 26August 13, 2019 2:45 AM

[quote]She throws incredible difficulty rather cleanly though.

HAHAHAHA.

by Anonymousreply 27August 13, 2019 4:00 PM

Boguinskaya was great, especially in that she started throwing more difficulty in the last phase of her career (during her comeback).

Funny that she was considered ancient and some thought it was ridiculous for her to return when she was 23, which is essentially the same age Biles is now.

by Anonymousreply 28August 13, 2019 4:02 PM

R27, who do you consider better these days?

Her dismount is insanely difficult. That dismount, minus one twist, is one of the most difficult to perform. She adds a whole extra twist to it.

by Anonymousreply 29August 13, 2019 7:19 PM

[quote]That dismount, minus one twist, is one of the most difficult to perform.

Yeah, and we were doing it 30 years ago, and without the atrocious form she has!

by Anonymousreply 30August 13, 2019 8:22 PM

Sunisa Lee has better form and artistry than Biles does.

And as has already been explained, Biles is able to do these things because she doesn't have to spend any time focusing on form or artistry. Plus she has the added benefit of Adderall!

by Anonymousreply 31August 13, 2019 8:26 PM

Imagine how great I would have been if I'd been allowed to compete with drugs!

by Anonymousreply 32August 13, 2019 8:30 PM

Yeah, Kerri at R32, I imagine if you would have used drugs you would have been able to stay in the sport another 5 years and maybe would have been able to actually win at least 1 individual medal.

Jesus, your parents have to be ashamed.

by Anonymousreply 33August 13, 2019 8:35 PM

At the last world champs the leading russian men were watching Simone competing in the floor final and were shown looking at each other smiling and shaking their heads in what looked like delight and amazement. One of them had was quoted as saying they feel inadequate when they see her on floor (I think it was one of their medal winners but can't remember for sure). When she bounces out of a tumble the commentators put it down to her power. Sure she's no dancer but at least she looks comfortable shaking her shoulders. Plenty of them can't dance. I'm looking at you Jade and Grace!

by Anonymousreply 34August 13, 2019 9:12 PM

Shr’s utterly magical. Watching her, I forget to breathe.

by Anonymousreply 35August 13, 2019 9:18 PM

Team Biles! If I wanted strength and artistry, I’ll watch porn.

by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2019 9:27 PM

The Russian Men wouldn't have to be in awe of Simone if they just got some medical waivers of their own!

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2019 9:30 PM

[quote] Yeah, and we were doing it 30 years ago, and without the atrocious form she has!

Shannon Miller threw a double-double? When?

by Anonymousreply 38August 14, 2019 12:25 AM

Re-read, R30, R38.

by Anonymousreply 39August 14, 2019 12:35 AM

Simone Biles is also only 4' 8". Apparently she walked into a gym ( without ADHD meds) as a child and started copying moves other gymnasts did. She's got bigger muscles than the other gymnasts. She lost her mom due to her moms irratic behavior and drug use (possible ADHD herself). Whatever the reason for needing the meds, real ADHD or just help with chaotic life symptoms that look like ADHD (raised by grandparents, cray mom) her talent is there.

Would she not train as hard and get big muscles without the drugs? Would she not be focused on a goal? Would she go off and be a drug addict like her mother? Would she just be slightly out of bounds due to lack of focus? Little point deductions here and there?

Does Adderall really help THAT much? To where it could make or break an Olympic athlete? Really?

by Anonymousreply 40August 14, 2019 12:35 AM

She's so cool. She's got that black girl smoothness black people are blessed with.

by Anonymousreply 41August 14, 2019 12:38 AM

It obviously helps enough that it's a banned substance!

She should be disqualified from everything and have all her medals stripped!

by Anonymousreply 42August 14, 2019 12:39 AM

Ok, take it off the banned list.

by Anonymousreply 43August 14, 2019 12:40 AM

How come no one ever talks about MY accomplishments??!

by Anonymousreply 44August 14, 2019 12:40 AM

Does Olga Korbut's pussy stink?

by Anonymousreply 45August 14, 2019 12:42 AM

You know, I really think you could give Nadia, Olga, Kim, Dominique, Strug, Yurchenko, all of them as much meds as you wanted, nothing off limits and still could never do this.

by Anonymousreply 46August 14, 2019 12:43 AM

Think again.

If they would have had the same floor with the same springs these bitches have today, AND were given drugs? Boguinskaya and Silivas probably could have done it.

They were both doing double twisting double backs in 87/88.

by Anonymousreply 47August 14, 2019 1:12 AM

Yeah they should take all things deemed performance enhancers off the list if someone has a medical waiver for it.

by Anonymousreply 48August 14, 2019 1:20 AM

She's a real [italic]#BaaaadAss

by Anonymousreply 49August 14, 2019 1:46 AM

Simone is no Shannon Miller, who had it all, beauty, grace, athleticism.... violins, scrunchies!

by Anonymousreply 50August 20, 2019 5:14 PM

R30 Silivas never did it a full in off beam

by Anonymousreply 51August 20, 2019 5:30 PM

[quote]Plus she has the added benefit of Adderall!

Has anyone on this thread actually taken Adderall? I have. And I would say Simone's taking Adderall makes her accomplishments shine even more brightly, especially given the restrictive caloric intake someone of her size likely follows.

Adderall (I'm talking the drug itself, not any withdrawal or missed-dosage issues) often makes you shaky, both internally and externally. Yes, it does help with focus, but to claim it has some magical powers to enhance physical performance in people with the ADD/ADHD brain (which is wired differently from the non-ADD/ADHD brain), is to not understand either the ADD biochemistry or Adderall.

by Anonymousreply 52August 20, 2019 5:53 PM

Yes, and what of someone that DOESN'T actually have ADHD?

by Anonymousreply 53August 20, 2019 7:10 PM

Simone is nice and all but let's face it.... she's not me.

by Anonymousreply 54August 20, 2019 7:24 PM

Yeah, Dom, she's nothing like you. Simone doesn't choke.

by Anonymousreply 55August 20, 2019 7:28 PM

r55

very true however if the good old days, Simone would not have been as successful under the 10.0 system with some of her mistakes, she may not have even survived prelims some years and with her beam mistake in 15 and mistakes on beam and vault in 18, she would not have won

by Anonymousreply 56August 20, 2019 7:41 PM

I'm well aware, R56. I said pretty much the same thing earlier in the thread. Simone would not have survived gymnastics in the 80s or 90s.

by Anonymousreply 57August 20, 2019 7:56 PM

The Russian men have something Simone doesn't have -- grace and elegance. See the beautiful and stylish David Belyavskiy.

by Anonymousreply 58February 11, 2020 3:27 AM

Zmeskal was hideous to watch

by Anonymousreply 59February 11, 2020 4:12 AM

Kerri, at R59, if you want hideous you should have mentioned your amazingly awful floor routine in 1992.
