Rosemary Harris.
Helen Hayes was too coy. Hepburn was too patrician and mannish. And Lillian Gish had no screen presence.

Kris Kardashian would have been perfect.

Sylvia Sidney. And she was actually Jewish.

Geraldine Page

Gary wanted Lucy to do it, but she talked him out of it.

Bette Davis.

None of them OP. Any of the following would have sufficed:
Bette Davis (was under consideration for the role)
Lucille Ball (was also under consideration for the role)
Elaine Stritch
Lauren Bacall
Ann Haney
Mary Wickes
Nancy Walker

Only Catherine Bach has the necessary experience playing Daisies and scooting around the southland in cars.

R9 Bette Davis was NOT under consideration for the role - in the updated book "Feud" (Story of Bette Davis & Joan Crawford) - Bette waited by her phone for a call to talk to the producers, as she thought she had an IN (because it was with The Zanuck Company. Distributed by, Warner Bros.) - but the call never came. Not even a letter. I suspect Richard had heard all of the horror stories dealing with Davis, and didn't want the hassle. Plus Davis was UN-insurable.

I don't think Hayes or Hepburn could have pulled off a convincing southern Jewish accent. But Gish could have probably done a great job.

R13 you are saying a FOUR-time Oscar winner (Hepburn) and the First Lady of the American Theater (Hayes) could not do a Southern-Jewish accent?
Are you currently high?

If Davis had been in better shape, she probably would've been cast. She was pretty ravaged by the time of Driving Miss Daisy.

Rue McClanahan could have sexed up that bland role and given the title a welcome double entendre.

The producer Richard Zanuck would NEVER have cast her, NEVER

Why not? Davis would've brought box office, if she'd not been so decrepit.

R19 he doesn't need the hassle when you have Jessica Tandy available.
