Candace Bushnell’s daily routine was published in the NYT

Her Sundays seem lonely!

How can they be lonely with poodles Pepper and Prancer to keep her company?

by Anonymousreply 1August 5, 2019 12:09 AM

She never was the creative force behind the TV show Sex and The City. Her columns were a jumping off point for the series. She never wrote for the series. Darren Star was far better at writing Candace Bushnell than Candace Bushnell ever was.

She taught millions of unmarried urban women to adore themselves for being materialistic and sex obsessed.

by Anonymousreply 3August 5, 2019 12:34 AM

This is what happens to a lot of former hot people. They end up alone.

by Anonymousreply 4August 5, 2019 1:22 AM

Bitch is 60!

60 years old!

by Anonymousreply 5August 5, 2019 1:29 AM

The worst of all, she's a Republican bitch. Fuck her, and not in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 6August 5, 2019 2:05 AM

R3 exactly. She was the original materialism and sex posing as female empowerment for profit. When should sink into the lonely pit of mistaken life goals.

by Anonymousreply 7August 5, 2019 2:48 AM

She looks really good for her age. I am not impressed by her living room and its furnishings. That couch on the right looks dreadful.

Window air conditioner? Hmmmmm.....

She's a Republican? That's troubling.

[quote] She taught millions of unmarried urban women to adore themselves for being materialistic and sex obsessed.

Really, Candace Bushnell introduced materialism, narcissism and sexuality to American culture. How impressive!

by Anonymousreply 10August 5, 2019 4:03 PM

This is what happens to a lot of people who were once "it girls" or "it boys." They end up an old whore, alone in a one-bedroom apartment with their pets.

by Anonymousreply 11August 5, 2019 5:02 PM

She doesn't eat anything until 4pm? Then she has a sandwich, one actual meal later and then she eats peanut M&Ms before bed. Sounds miserable to me.

by Anonymousreply 12August 5, 2019 5:11 PM

This is her house in the country she can't seem to sell. I wonder why? Oh right. She built a pool house that's bigger than the damn main house. And she must be hard up for a few shekels since it's also been available on AirBnb.

I read a book called Scandal by George Rush and Joanna Molloy who had a gossip column in The New York Daily News. The book opens with Candace Bushnell following around some guy Clifton Street and writing down everything he said and putting it directly in her column. It made her seem like she wasn't very funny or witty on her own.

by Anonymousreply 14August 6, 2019 12:15 AM

I remember finding her columns when I was in college--they were probably about 10 years old by then, but I was curious given the success of SITC.

They were very sad--she hung out with all these incredibly shallow materialistic people she clearly couldn't stand and then made fun of them in her column. It made no sense because the narrator (Candace/Carrie) was likeable enough and you kept wanting to ask her why she just didn't find better friends, people she wouldn't have to mock in her columns. (There were all these women lusting after banker types and putting up with them because they were rich and went to good schools and they were always going to parties where everyone was just a detestable boor with a large wallet. It was so blatantly anti-feminist and 50s-ish in its tonality.)

The Observer had some guy writing similar columns fairly recently. I think he's had some sort of dot com and made a lot of money but also couldn't stand all the rich people he was surrounded with on the UES and like many people, I think my primary reaction was "so don't hang out with them."

Her tiny apartment is pretty dreadful, as is the Connecticut behemoth. Surprising.

by Anonymousreply 16August 6, 2019 1:18 AM

Candace has gotten a lot of mileage out of a slim literary talent. The SATC column and books were never as entertaining or clever as the TV series at its peak, thanks to Darren Star and Michael Patrick King and their creative staff. The series helped make Candace a name. Most of her other projects have not been successful.

OTOH, the SATC franchise made those people enormously wealthy, including star/exec producer, SJP. Candace, by comparison, didn't get much participation in the series and allegedly, next to none in the movies, despite having created the concept and characters. So while I'm sure she and her poodles live comfortably, she's nowhere near as wealthy as she could have/should have been. You can tell: it's a rather modest little apartment in an undistinguished looking building.

by Anonymousreply 17August 6, 2019 2:28 AM

PS: Dorothy Parker, former resident of Candace's building, didn't have much to show financially for her writing career at the end of her life, either.

by Anonymousreply 18August 6, 2019 2:31 AM

Some smart people on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 19August 6, 2019 2:34 AM

R17, She made millions, but not tens of millions like everyone else you mentioned. HBO made the most money as SATC was their biggest world wide hit prior to Game of Thrones.

by Anonymousreply 20August 6, 2019 2:37 AM

That "if my boyfriend is in town" phrase sounds so depressing.

Do you know that Dorothy Parker short story called something like "Rich Woman's Dairy" about this idiot who spends all day looking for people to hang out with her? Like that.

by Anonymousreply 21August 6, 2019 2:37 AM

Does she live at the Volney. Characterized as full of old ladies with dogs when Parker lived there. Lots of historical buildings have window units--don't be a snob.

by Anonymousreply 22August 6, 2019 2:39 AM

Her writing seems incredibly bitchy. The Sex in the City book is so badly written it was surprising. I read somewhere she called herself an urban Proust. Yeah right.

by Anonymousreply 23August 6, 2019 2:45 AM

Yes, she lives at the Volney. She paid 770,000 for her 1-bed three years ago.
