What does DL think? Looks weird.
It looks cute.
But they really went overboard casting someone not remotely hot as the laborer, didn't they?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 3, 2019 8:13 PM |
Odd.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 3, 2019 10:14 PM |
If the guy wasn't meant to be his love interest, then what's the point? I mean a friendship picture is nice but I was actually hoping that this was going to be a gay romantic comedy.

Seems fun, cant wait to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 4, 2019 2:45 AM |
R3, that's what this director does, "Friendship Movies."
He did the same thing with "Handsome Devil" where you'd normally expect the straight guy who is kind of femme and the gay guy who is butch to actually have a relationship but instead it's all about their friendship.
However, the day laborer is that character's type. He likes older latino men and only seems to like latino men. So he must be a DLer.

What in clueless caucasian hell is this mess?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 4, 2019 5:30 AM |
The director clearly has a fetish for out of shape old migrant workers.
Why couldn't they make the day laborer a hot young looking Latino?

I watched and enjoyed it, but I think US audiences infer some themes differently than non-US audiences. I am a non-US POC and I did not have the same reaction as r6 (who I am assuming is from the US and probably a white SJW? ) If I am wrong I apologize.
Anyway, sometimes a film about loneliness and friendship is just that.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 4, 2019 11:39 AM |
I saw it and enjoyed it. Bomer and the other guy play their parts very well. The weatherman main character is gay and getting over a romance that ended.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 4, 2019 11:52 AM |
It looks sweet and fun. I'd like to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 4, 2019 12:02 PM |
I'm so in love with Bomer. I'd sand his deck for free.

His face is so smooth.

[quote]I watched and enjoyed it, but I think US audiences infer some themes differently than non-US audiences.
Because we have a different history.
[quote]I am a non-US POC and I did not have the same reaction as [R6] (who I am assuming is from the US and probably a white SJW? ) If I am wrong I apologize.
Some people see SJW as a negative term but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume you weren't trying to attack that person.
I'm not that person but this issue and people calling it out has existed before the internet as we know it did. Long before the term SJW was used or created. It's the same thing people were complaining about during Driving Miss Daisy in 1989 (which they reference in the movie) and even in Vanishing Point in 1971.
That being said: the trailer makes it look like "clueless Caucasian hell" but the actual movie is quite different. It looks like it could be Lost in Translation 2.0 based on that trailer and I don't blame people for thinking that.
Unless you actually see the movie then you realize it's not quite like that at all. That boating scene would lead you to think the day worker is rowing while the other character is talking non-stop to a person who can't understand him. Well, that's what's happening. It's only after they cut in the trailer that .... ... ... ... ... ... (spoilers but not mega spoilers) Bomer's character falls asleep on the boat and the day worker talks to his wife on the phone and you find out what he's really thinking. Bomer's character is no savior (he's quite screwed up) and Pateno's character is no magical wise sage (he's just a nice guy who needs a job) & he's also no push over.

If they didn't want people to get the wrong idea, why did they call it "Papi Chulo"?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 5, 2019 1:25 PM |
That still photo makes him look like Burke Ramsey b
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 5, 2019 1:25 PM |
Papi Chulo really is a very intriguing title! Especially for a film about friendship and loneliness...
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 5, 2019 1:40 PM |
I just saw the trailer and it looks like a very good movie. I must say I empathize more with Ernesto than with the Bomer character. I'm from Europe and to me he's just a rich American with emotional problems that he doesn't know how to deal with except with money. Not a bad guy necessarily for his kind, but these types are very self-centered and usually know nothing of life outside their own circle. Ernesto is working-class, but he makes more sense and seems more "real" to my eyes. Still this is just from the trailer, the movie probably goes deeper than that. The actor playing Ernesto conveys that weariness (in his eyes) very well. Maybe he didn't have to act for that. It seems like a good movie.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 5, 2019 1:55 PM |
What I meant is looking at the trailer it seems like the movie is told from the POV of Matt Bomer because it's the story of his character and Ernesto is the alien who helps him, but to me Bomer is the alien.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 5, 2019 1:57 PM |
I thought "Papi Chulo" meant "Hot Daddy".
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 5, 2019 2:06 PM |
The Grinder scene is fun.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 5, 2019 3:42 PM |
R25, the Grinder scene is meant to be sad and pathetic and it is. It's horrifying. Seeing the top of his butt crack means nothing. This director doesn't do "sexy."
[quote]If they didn't want people to get the wrong idea, why did they call it "Papi Chulo"?
Because people keep getting the wrong idea about both of the characters within the movie. At different times they are both the "Papi Chulo."
It's an okay movie all around. It's not the greatest movie ever. It's not even this director's greatest movie. It is, however, worth seeing.

I don’t get his appeal. His looks is overrated imho:

Handsome Devil your favourite, R26?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 5, 2019 4:14 PM |
Matt Bomer is the Hedy Lamarr of his generation.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 5, 2019 4:18 PM |
Not sure he's up to inventing wi-fi, though.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 5, 2019 4:24 PM |
And he needs to get to marrying husband #2.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 5, 2019 4:27 PM |
I think it had more depth R28 but the cinematography in this film was a cut above.
Knowing the lead is a weatherman and matching the cinematography (and color grading) to the changing environment along with his mood was masterful & something you'd probably see in a much bigger movie.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 6, 2019 3:19 AM |
I was a little disappointed with the movie. The whole thing was more pathetic than funny, and most scenes made me cringe with second hand embarrassment. Especially the daughter's party. But the acting was good, for both the leads, and the cinematography was beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 25, 2019 9:08 PM |
I think Matt Bomer is a better actor than he is given credit for and I might order 'Papi Chulo' from Netflix. Looks like a sweet movie.

[quote]I am a non-US POC and I did not have the same reaction as [R6] (who I am assuming is from the US and probably a white SJW? )
R9 I'm Latino and I get so sick of white Americans being offended for us. For some reason, white liberals, especially the far left variety, have immense white guilt and a white savior complex. They seem to be self-loathers who get off on saving POC. But it's all about themselves and their guilt.

R34 He is a good actor but he is often overlooked because he is a bit too attractive to be taken seriously. He was great in the Normal heart, and I thought he was also very good in Walking Out and Papi Chulo. I hope that as he gets older and less conventionally handsome he'll have more interesting roles. I'm looking forward to The Sinner.

Stumbled upon this yesterday on Netflix and thought it was a very sweet, poignant little movie. It was also a pleasant surprise to see D'Arcy Carden (of The Good Place) pop up in a small supporting role.

I adore Matt Bomer and he is a excellent actor. In fact he has had moments of brilliance. I had no idea this was around, so thanks, OP. Matt Bome can sell dog food on TV and I will watch it!
