Mario Lopez apologizes for 'ignorant' comments about parenting and gender identity

(CNN)TV personality Mario Lopez has apologized for comments made during a recent podcast appearance in which he said it was "dangerous" for parents to allow their children to pick their gender identities at young ages.

"The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were," Lopez said in a statement to CNN. "I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful."

The former "Saved By the Bell" star made the remarks last week on a podcast hosted by conservative personality Candace Owens.

In the discussion, Owens brings up what she calls one of the "weird trends" of Hollywood parents allowing their children to pick their gender identity.

Though she is not a parent herself, Owens said "I nannied for five years of my life" and does not believe that children have the "mental authority" to make such decisions.

In response, Lopez asked Owens "please don't lump me into" the group of Hollywood parents of which she was speaking.

"I'm kind of blown away too," he said. "Look, I'm never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can't go wrong. But at the same time, my God, if you're 3 years old and you're saying you're feeling a certain way, or you think you're a boy or a girl, whatever the case may be, I just think it's dangerous as a parent to make that determination."

He added, "It's sort of alarming and, my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on."

Lopez has three children.

"Queer Eye" star Karamo Brown was among those who took issue with Lopez's statement.

In a tweet, he said, "I'm disappointed to read @MarioLopezExtra comments about parent's who support their child's openes [sic] about their gender identity. As a social worker I am trained to identify abuse or neglect of a child. Healthy & safe dialogue w/ kids is neither abusive, neglectful or 'dangerous.'"

Lopez joined syndicated entertainment newsmagazine show "Access Hollywood" earlier this month after several years as a host for "Extra."

NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution, which distributes the show, did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Is "Access Hollywood" a downgrade in jobs from "Extra"?

by Anonymousreply 1July 31, 2019 7:39 PM

When are celebrities going to learn to keep their mouths shut when hot point subjects like this are brought up to them in interviews? All they've got to do is say "sorry, you're not getting me into this conversation". Just because they're celebrities doesn't mean they have to take a stand or have an opinion on everything.

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2019 7:43 PM

He was right originally, and buckled under to woke hysteria.

by Anonymousreply 3July 31, 2019 7:49 PM

So many threads about Mario’s comments on trans....

by Anonymousreply 4July 31, 2019 8:01 PM

Whether he was right or whether he was wrong, Mario is and always has been, a douchebag.

by Anonymousreply 5July 31, 2019 8:07 PM

He should apologize for being a rapist and a rape apologist. But no. The trans comments are what ever focused on.

by Anonymousreply 6July 31, 2019 8:09 PM

[quote]I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community

It really only has to do with the trans people, but let's continue to pretend that there's a tranny for every gay guy and lesbian and that his comments are deeply wounding to people that they have nothing to do with.

He didn’t rape anyone. Nice try, troll.

Do we really care what Mario Lopez has to say about anything?

by Anonymousreply 9July 31, 2019 9:43 PM

The producers of his show got to him.

by Anonymousreply 10July 31, 2019 9:53 PM

It's not dangerous for parents to make that decision....it's not their decision to make, period. Child has to grow into an adult.

Yep, the T brigade has their knives out again. Why can't they just leave people alone? He's not hating on them as much as questioning the right of parents to decide their child's fate based on ambiguous statements about gender from little children.

Just because a boy wants to be a Disney princess (and who can blame them?) doesn't mean this is his permanent fate. Show some goddamned common sense and support that child in his fantasy and move along. If he/she persists into adolescence and it's consistent or problematic (child is adamant about gender identity or so miserable in their body that they contemplate suicide) then go from there and make informed decisions. Jazz Jennings is a good example of this. Transitioning a young child is just wrong wrong wrong.

I'll forgive him if he'll release some nude pics.

by Anonymousreply 12July 31, 2019 10:01 PM

Who the fuck listens to a Mario Lopez podcast? Who cares what he has to say about ANYTHING? Trannies need to get a life and a job.

by Anonymousreply 13July 31, 2019 10:05 PM

Mario needs to provide verification of his own gender please.

by Anonymousreply 14July 31, 2019 10:19 PM

Mario has freedom of speech and whether he’s a celebrity or not he has the right to state his opinions. I agree with him about this whole transgender shit. I wish he had stood up for what he said and not backed down.

by Anonymousreply 15July 31, 2019 10:29 PM

Actors should act, and stay out of the personal opinion business. It gets them nothing but trouble.

He has a podcast??

by Anonymousreply 17August 2, 2019 10:35 AM

His original remarks were pretty mild 'parents need to think about sticking the trans label on 3 year olds for gender non conforming behaviour' and were taken out of context to be used for outrage. This article seems to sum it up - I know it's a conservative publication but the article makes sense.

No, he was on alt-right nutjob Candace Owens's podcast.

by Anonymousreply 19August 2, 2019 10:53 AM

[quote]"It's sort of alarming and, my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on."

Ridiculous. If a 3yo says they're a different gender, then why on earth does that seem like a permanent decision to anyone? The kid can just change their mind, like kids tend to do.

Actually, I know the answer to that: the anti-trans religious right-wing lunatics have told everyone that once a toddler says they're a different gender, evil liberal SJW scum swoop in and shove hormones down the child's throat and those hormones will ruin them for life. That's why they're always hand-wringing over Liberal Elite Virtue Signalling Celebrities (tm) who have forced -- FORCED! -- their innocent girls into boy's Wranglers, and their innocent boys into blonde WHORE WIGS!!!

It's right-wing fearmongering and he has obviously bought into it.

by Anonymousreply 20August 2, 2019 10:57 AM

R3 is right. Do you think he's changed his mind, of course not. He had to cave to the Trans crowd to save his career. Anyone remember when Kirsten Gillibrand was anti-gay, then "evolved" when it was going to help her get elected?

by Anonymousreply 21August 2, 2019 11:14 AM

Mario is still too cute with those dimples, give him a one time pass and move on

by Anonymousreply 22August 2, 2019 11:28 AM

Why was he on that annoying right wingers podcast in the first place? That is the guilty action.

by Anonymousreply 23August 2, 2019 11:30 AM

He wasn’t wrong. I’m disappointed that he buckled.

After issuing an apology for comments about parents raising transgender children, TV host Mario Lopez missed the latest taping of his entertainment gabfest, Extra.

Lopez, who has been a presenter at GLAAD media events in the past, caught heat for suggesting that it was “dangerous” for parents to be supportive of a child’s transition during an interview on the conservative Candace Owens podcast.

After media outlets picked up on the comments, he released an apology saying, “The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were.”

Deadline reports "No explanation was given for Lopez’s absence from today’s show, although Extra hosts Renee Bargh and Tanika Ray addressed the controversy by interviewing GLAAD director Anthony Ramos and Dr Johanna Olson Kennedy, an expert on trans youth development at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles."

Additionally, producers for Extra issued this statement: “While we have enjoyed a long relationship with Mario Lopez, who we know to be a caring person, the opinions he expressed in this interview do not reflect those of Extra.

"We wholeheartedly embrace our friends from the LGBTQ community and believe they need support and love. For more support on these issues you can go to GLAAD.org.”

He has fucked-up his face. He looks like Wayne Newton.

by Anonymousreply 27August 2, 2019 8:56 PM

[quote] He’s got a lot of nerve, especially since he is so fluid with his own sexuality. Everyone in Hollywood knows he’s been with half the men in the industry. Nobody judges him for being closeted. He needs to keep his judgemental mouth shut when it comes to other people and how they identify.

Trannies are loons.

by Anonymousreply 29August 2, 2019 10:35 PM

Yeah, he has the nerve to suggest that three-year-old kids may not be the most reliable indicators regarding their own gender identity. 🙄 Big surprise. Of course he was right. But he ran into the buzz saw of the LGBTQ community leaders who have all fallen in line on the question of transing young children. There can be no deviation from this, and there will be no dissent until years from now when these kids grow up and speak out about how insane it was to start giving young children all manner of drugs, puberty blockers, and hormones.

by Anonymousreply 30August 2, 2019 11:06 PM

[quote]Mario has freedom of speech and whether he’s a celebrity or not he has the right to state his opinions

And people have the right to state theirs. Welcome to America.

He must have been suspended. He's lucky HRC and GLAAD aren't on this. He'd have been fired by now.

How could I have known I was a girl at 3? I had ever seen a pussy at 3 (or 30 for that matter).
