"Moscow Mitch" moniker enraging Mitch McConnell

Tee hee!

---

WASHINGTON — Senator Mitch McConnell is usually impervious to criticism, even celebrating the nasty nicknames critics bestow on him. But Mr. McConnell, the Senate majority leader, is incensed by the name “Moscow Mitch,” and even more miffed that he has been called a “Russian asset” by critics who accuse him of single-handedly blocking stronger election security measures after Russia’s interference in 2016.

Democrats had been making the case for months, but it was supercharged last week by the testimony of Robert S. Mueller III, the former special counsel, who told the House Intelligence Committee that the Russians were back at it “as we sit here.”

Mr. McConnell cites several reasons for his opposition — a longstanding resistance to federal control over state elections, newly enacted security improvements that were shown to have worked in the 2018 voting and his suspicion that Democrats are trying to gain partisan advantage with a host of proposals.

Republican colleagues say that Mr. McConnell, a longtime foe of tougher campaign finance restrictions and disclosure requirements, is leery of even entering into legislative negotiation that could touch on fund-raising and campaign spending. Sign Up for On Politics With Lisa Lerer

A spotlight on the people reshaping our politics. A conversation with voters across the country. And a guiding hand through the endless news cycle, telling you what you really need to know.

But whatever Mr. McConnell’s reasoning, the criticism has taken hold — even back home in Kentucky, where the majority leader faces re-election next year.

“Democrats want more aggressive legislation to protect America’s elections after Robert Mueller’s stark warning about Russian interference,” began one report aired on a Louisville television station last week. “Mitch McConnell blocked it.”

Even President Trump felt compelled to come to his defense — as only he could.

“Mitch McConnell is a man that knows less about Russia and Russian influence than even Donald Trump,” the president told reporters Tuesday as he was leaving for a speech in Jamestown, Va. “And I know nothing.”

That did not relieve the heat on the majority leader, who on Monday had appeared to open the door ever so slightly to doing more on election preparedness.

He’s not blocking legislation to help Moscow. If he alienates Trump, Trump will primary his ass and he’s done. Very low approval rating in Kentucky and up for re-election. Trump will probably also feed his wife to the wolves. Mitch is not intentionally a traitor. He’s just a sniveling coward.

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2019 3:59 AM

r2 are you kidding with that?

Amy! Amy! Amy!

by Anonymousreply 5July 31, 2019 4:08 AM

Kidding? No. Trump denies Russian interference and doesn’t want any legislation that contradicts his “witch hunt” attack. Mitch is weak and afraid of Trump. That’s enough to explain Mitch’s actions.

by Anonymousreply 6July 31, 2019 4:22 AM

R6 Moscow Mitch isn't a sniveling coward. He throws Trump bones to keep him placated while he breaks norms and violates tradition to ensure that no Democratic policies see the light of day. He's the real head of the RNC and has the most power at the moment. Mitch blames everything on the Democrats that he can.

by Anonymousreply 7July 31, 2019 4:48 AM

If he’s not afraid of Trump, he’s a moron.

by Anonymousreply 8July 31, 2019 4:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 20July 31, 2019 2:25 PM

^^ Exactly. I don’t care what his motives are, he’s still doing it, and it’s helping Vladimir Putin. The name fits like a glove. Moscow Mitch. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 21July 31, 2019 2:29 PM

I read that he has accepted Russian oil money from one of the oligarchs, so yes he is a paid Russian asset.

by Anonymousreply 22July 31, 2019 2:29 PM

There is supposedly a tape of Moscow Mitch with Lyin' Paul Ryan discussing how to hide Russian money in reelection campaigns.

When the truth of these times finally comes out, we're going to be asking the same questions we did about the Germans in WWII: how could people not see what was going on? Were the people who supported these politicians really so oblivious that they were not aware of their nature, their villany, and their crimes? How could human beings treat each other this way?

by Anonymousreply 23July 31, 2019 2:48 PM

A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy — made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016 exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. [...]

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthy’s assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

by Anonymousreply 36July 31, 2019 5:15 PM

It's all over Twitter, yes. But there's still no reference to it in his Wikipedia article. It would be nice if one of you could do it, because now it's gonna stay with him forever now. Just like the name of his good Russian friend Deripaska.

I would if I could, but I am not American and don't feel that comfortable writing in English either.

She looks more crabby than gabby r44.

by Anonymousreply 46July 31, 2019 7:18 PM

I don't think it's a simple yes or no in terms of Moscow Mitch being afraid of Trump.

He has an ultra-rightwing agenda and he's absolutely unafraid to subvert the constitution in its pursuit. Trump has proven useful to this in some ways, and a problem in others. He may be SML but he still needs the president to drive the agenda through both houses, and while Trump is clearly keen to drive such an agenda, he has proven singularly incompetent and incapable at achieving it.

So I'm sure McConnell is in some ways overjoyed with Trump (political leanings, supreme court, etc) and in other ways completely frustrated by him, and even fearful that Trump might kill conservatism in America, befoul it.

In terms of just being afraid of crossing him, Trump has his cult of mouthbreathers but they are not where McConnell got his power, and I really doubt he is worried Trump will hatch job him.

by Anonymousreply 47July 31, 2019 7:34 PM

Why is everybody assuming that Mitch is acting the way he is because he's afraid of Trump? I feel you're giving him the benefit of the doubt - that's he's not all that evil. I think he's been in cohoots with Russia for a very long time. He's benefited greatly from it and wants to continue to do so. Anytime he has criticized Trump, it's only been to stay in character, (so to speak).

The man is an evil, selfish, self-serving opportunist. Why is that so difficult for people to grasp? Am I wrong?

by Anonymousreply 48July 31, 2019 7:41 PM

Whatever private reasons McConnell might have for blocking the new election regulations might be, in the end his actions are enormously helping Russian plans to influence the elections, and he fully knows that.

So "Moscow Mitch" is a well deserved nickname--it will stay with him forever, and will feature prominently in his obituaries.

by Anonymousreply 49July 31, 2019 7:43 PM

You mean COMRADE Cindy, r44?

This needs to trend on Twitter too.

We need to get the BOTToM of this!

Bitch McCon court- martial for sodomy in 1967. From the article:

A new member of the 100th Army Reserve Unit in Basic Training at Ft. Knox was arrested in the barracks for sodomy. The guy is getting out of the military and the excuse will be due to an illness, an eye disorder. The Major then told a joke about it saying, "I guess the guy couldn't see the difference between guys and girls."

Lynch asked him how this guy could accomplish this and get a release from the army. The Major told him that the soldier had served as an intern to Senator John Sherman Cooper and Senator Cooper called the Commanding General of Ft. Knox to arrange the discharge.
