Does your clothing and hairstyle immediately telegraph to heterosexuals that you are a homosexual?
If so, why?

Does your clothing and hairstyle immediately telegraph to heterosexuals that you are a homosexual?
If so, why?

That’s ... peculiar. This isn’t the 1970s.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 26, 2019 11:47 PM |
Come on R1, a guy wearing a mesh tank top and tight pants that end mid-calf and an exaggerated Macklemore/Hitler Youth haircut is never going to be mistaken for straight in 2019.
There was a period in the 90s when you needed a discerning eye to tell the Abercrombie gay look from the jock look but there's plenty of guys who telegraph their sexuality via their clothing choices.

I dress well. Sometimes that's considered gay, but I just have a good sense of what goes together colour wise. I never wear exuberant outfits or anything.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 27, 2019 12:38 AM |
Careful, readers: many DLers have an innate hatred of fashion and all things fashionable and find anything outside of polo shirts and old Dockers/Levis insanely gay.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 27, 2019 12:43 AM |
I think that's because many DLers are over 60 R9 and all that looks good on them are khakis and baggy polo shirts.
Though that said, I am always surprised how almost every fashion thread on DL turns into a discussion about what JC Penney is showing that month. Though that's likely more of a social class thing than a fashion thing

Younger straight hipsters I work with dress like R6 and can pull it off because they're hot and thin.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 15, 2020 5:58 PM |
I was mocked indirectly in the “I’m a straight guy: AMA” thread:
[quote]How many hoodies do you own?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 15, 2020 7:04 PM |
Silly poll OP.
I am a gay man. I wear stylish clothes are on trend, like other men who want to look nice. I tend to wear Brooks Brother at work. I like Polo, Banana Republic and J Crew for business casual and weekend wear looks. I don't dress like a woman, I don't wear flashy clownwear and I take strong offense to you implying that "dressing gay" mean looking like a tacky buffon.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 15, 2020 7:09 PM |
R16 that then would be a yassss for you dear, along with all that indignation.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 15, 2020 7:15 PM |
R16 doesn't know he dresses gay.
Look Dude, or should I say Dear, everything you described is stereotypical gay fashion self talk. Straight guys for the most part, (yes I know there are exceptions) do not care too much about how they dress. It has nothing to do with dressing like a woman. It's about the obsession of dressing up or spending so much time pondering your outfit like woman do.
Even long before I was born, they way straight people in America refereed to gays was to call them "fancy pants". Meaning the gay ones always seemed to dress well or fancy.
In Italy, Spain or France it's a slightly different story. But then again, being labeled as "international" or "very European" is also a sign you are gay.

We weren’t talking about hair, but clothes.

I would if I had any sense of style, alas...
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 15, 2020 7:49 PM |
When younger.
Now it’s jeans and reversible fleeces
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 15, 2020 7:56 PM |
No, in fact I wear horizontal-striped oversized polo shirts, Dockers, and New Balance sneakers.
I take my fashion cues from antic MSNBC personality Steve Kornacki.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 15, 2020 8:00 PM |
I wear hoodies and jeans, all baggy
Baseball hats sometimes
Military style haircut with a little hair gel
Don't wear a winter coat, unless it's really cold, no scarves, no gloves, no umbrella when it rains, they're all feminine
I spray AXE cologne sometimes after the gym
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 15, 2020 8:07 PM |
The choices, then, are one "No, I dress like a slob" and four variations on "Yes, I dress gay"?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 15, 2020 8:10 PM |
I'm an expat in Europe, so I suppose I do dress gay. But I am not trying to attract anyone. The clothes for sale are so well-designed and fit so well and looking good is high status. Slobs and tourists evoke pity and contempt.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 15, 2020 9:00 PM |
Aspiring to look"high status" is a very gay trait. RT27. Anything that worships fashion is gay by most standards. Nothing wrong with that if it's what floats your boat, but it is seen as gay.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 15, 2020 9:05 PM |
I am a basic jeans and t-shirt sort of all American looking type guy so that works for me. Most people in my industry dress that way at work. It's a creative field but on computers, nothing to do with fashion. But honestly, I think fallowing fashion trends is a huge waste of time, money and life I have left on this planet.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 15, 2020 9:10 PM |
Lots of straight men are very knowledgeable about fashion and dress well.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 15, 2020 9:16 PM |
Yes, lots of straight men but not most care about fashion, and they are assumed to be gay as well. They just don't care because they are secure in their masculinity. But it still dose not change the fact that they dress gay by most peoples standards.

Beautiful designs, colours and fabrics, ie clothes, are one of life's pleasures, along with art, music, nature, interiors, books, food and anything else which delights the senses. Why would I choose to deny myself that?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 15, 2020 11:41 PM |
Some of my clothes are camo, some arent. Thats about it. As long as its durable and doesnt show dirt and oil stains I'm good
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 16, 2020 1:21 AM |
An Ungaro spring frock is a good place to start.
