Eldergays: Tell Us About Robert Goulet

This was one of my grandfather's favorite songs, he used to play it for me and my brother when we were kids at their beach house on one of those old school record players and then we'd go and get ice cream, those soft serve cones, so it always brings up good memories.

Was he considered a good singer? Who listened to his music other than my grandfather? Did you used to refer to a hot babe as a "peach" back in the 60s?

Thanks.

Robert Goulet, Robert Goulet.....my God, Robert Goulet!

Always cheesy but my god, what a voice. His holiday album, "This Christmas I Spend with You" is my all-time fave and I play it immediately after Thanksgiving dinner every year to start the season on a high note.

All I know is he had beautiful eyes and a beautiful voice and that my mom had a huge crush on him.

He already seems so old/outdated here.

He had a nice hairy bod, and French Canadian good looks.

I had a college friend in the 70s who referred to girls as peach blossoms. He was from Kansas City.

I think I already told my Robert Goulet mention here. But it was about the night I talked to Elizabeth Taylor. At the first Reagan Inaugural Ball. I think it was at the Space Smithsonian Museum. I will keep my story to Robert Goulet but it is a sad story. He was the main entertainment. A small stage had been put in. Buddy somebody provided music. Robert Goulet was singing but he was very, very drunk. Sloppy drunk. He couldn't remember lyrics, didn't stay with the music, wandered all over the stage. But he kept trying to sing loudly. (Elizabeth Taylor felt bad for him and thought somebody should just get him off the stage.) But nobody did.

Hopefully, he had some kind of rehab in his future?

Didn't Goulet need a lot of help in the La Cage revival? I can't remember if it was with lines/blocking but I expect the drinking had fried parts of his brain.

Thanks R7, in the lyrics to "Summer Sounds" he says "the whistles on the beach when a peach goes by" so I wondered if it was a common term.

Funny how sexist that lyrics sounds by 2019 standards.

He guest starred on Alice:

So where did he fit into the music ecosystem?

Would it be fair to day that he was one of those guys who was sort of lost post-British Invasion when rock music took over, but still had enough fans that he didn't disappear overnight?

Heart throb for old ladies....so absurdly handsome and narcissistic you had to love him.

by Anonymousreply 15July 25, 2019 11:36 PM

R7 French-Canadian? He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

by Anonymousreply 16July 25, 2019 11:48 PM

His parents were Joseph Georges Andre Goulet and Jeanette (Gauthier) Goulet, both born in Quebec.

Here's the title track from "This Christmas I Spend with You." Now this is Christmas music. Look at the album cover -- elegance, bitches.

R9. We saw him in the revival. He was still good, but he wasn’t doing the more robust, classic parts of the role. Still, Goulet threw everything he had into it and it was a hell of a lot of fun.

There are some people who can deliver, no matter what. He’s one of them.

Truman Capote was gifted with a poinsettia plant one Christmas. Appalled, he dismissed it as the 'Robert Goulet of botany' before throwing it out.

He really was gorgeous. I bet he would have smelled nice too, except for all the booze and cigarettes.

by Anonymousreply 22July 26, 2019 12:30 AM

Carol looks beautiful there. I hate when whitebread singers try to sing bluesy material, though. It ends up being neither fish nor fowl.

by Anonymousreply 23July 26, 2019 12:35 AM

Carol just wasn't special. She's a bland Chita. Perfectly adept dancer and singer, but nothing that sets her apart. I saw her in Spider Woman and she was good, but I missed Chita's snap.
