I can tell you it's *extremely* unlikely that Marvel would make the character Ikaris gay, so I doubt Madden is the result of the directed casting call (he's more like an unexpected bonus in the diversity push). Phastos' background and personal life are largely a mystery, so it seems much easier for the writers to fill in the blanks of that character if Bryan Tyree Henry is gay.

They moment they make a sympathetic gay character, the foreign box-office dollars are cut in half.

China makes them edit out all gay content, so the filmers usually make it trivial and unimportant so it's easy to excise for all that Chinese box-office.

Thena and Ikaris are unlikely to be changed into gay characters in the movie, her love affair with Kro and the tragic result of his marriage to a human woman in ancient Greece are big parts of their backstories. Of course, they've always been rivals/reluctant allies in the comics rather than lovers, so I'm not sure if reports about their characters being a couple indicate a deliberate change in the story, were a result of Jolie being misidentified as Sersi rather than Thena, or were just speculation based on them being the most prominent female and male actors cast so OF COURSE their characters have to have a romance.

Phastos hasn't really had his backstory revealed in the comics, so the writers can do almost anything they want with his personal life without contradicting the source material.

They seem to be gender-swapping a couple of the Eternals for the movie, so there's no reason they couldn't tweak their sexualities as well. Plus, they are a functionally immortal species, so who is to say across the millennia they don't chop and change a bit?

I always say that this new trend of making the actor the closest possible to the character is ridiculous because acting is pretending to be someone you are not, but the truth is openly gay actors have a tough time to get roles, being gay seems to be a problem to get straight roles, but then the prominent gay roles are always for straight actors.

So maybe a little twitter outrage is not that bad, specially when you have straight actors who are clearly uncomfortable playing gay roles (that or they are incredibly bad) and some of them spend interviews letting people very clear how straight they are.

We live in a world where homosexuality is still criminalised in 72 countries around the world, and these movies will be shown in most of those countries. It's a HUGE deal to have an out proud gay actor do the press rounds for the role of a gay character he's playing.

I know it's easy to lose perspective when you live in the US, but gays exist (in far greater numbers, at that) beyond your shores as well. So maybe spare them/us a thought now and then because representation in Western entertainment is probably the main thing that weakens homophobia over time.

R211 is correct. It’s just guessing at this point. Whoever the gay Eternal will be, the actor will not be openly so. While Ikaris is canonically straight in the comics and a big part of his story is his relationship with a woman, they could change it just like they changed genders of Makkari, Sprite and Ajax.

It's not like there's this vast Eternals fanbase out there, R214 - they are very minor properties, with maybe only Sersi reaching the B-list. They hugely changed the position and backstory of vast swathes of far higher profile characters for the MCU, so I doubt a tweak to Ikaris or Phastos would trouble them. They are already gender-swapping Sprite.

If Marvel is being truthful then someone in the Eternals cast outside of Angelina is probably going to have to come out.

The character Kit is playing is not an Eternal although his Black Knight did briefly share a mild link with Sersi giving him a mild degree of powers before the link is eventually btoken and he gets his mystical armor and weapons.

The Black Knight character appearing in The Eternals seems like its meant to be an introduction before they take him on to his own films, as the character is part of the Avengers team at many points. They were apparently talking about adding this superhero last year. The mind bonding thing with Sersi sounds kind of rapey when you read more about it, since Dane's not into it and they force it because the Sersi character is mentally unstable. According to We Got It Covered Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry) is the gay character.

But according to reports from the CCXP 2019 expo, where footage from the film was shown last week, Widows star Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos will be depicted as queer. I can’t be too fussed about the age difference between these two. I will say, it’s not showing for me, but Froy’s dad may no longer be following RM on IG. Not that it really matters anyway.
