The Gays and Tennis Part 41 US Open summer series edition!
This coming week starts the USO series as Atlanta gets underway. After that we'll have a series of tournaments across the US oh and of course the Rogers Cup. Given the heatwave taking over a good chunk of the country, surely that will impact the results of some matches too.
This week also has the debut of the ladies event in Latvia.
there are coaching changes too.
Kafelnikov, Pierce and Li are about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

R1 Kafelnikov has 2 singles slam titles, 4 doubles slam titles and the 2000 Olympics singles gold medal. He's the last ATP player to win the singles and doubles slam at the same event (1996 RG).
I remember 10 years ago when people were wondering why he wasn't in the HoF, some commentators were bashing him but I don't remember why. He certainly accomplished more than someone like Roddick.
Sure I expect Kafelnikov to be a Putin lover which sucks but the HoF is about tennis achievements not personality

I have nothing against him R3, and I forgot about the Olympic gold and the dubs titles.
He was never this hot, though:

Actually, I don't think he is a fan, R3. Some of his tweets a while back seemed to not be very positive about politics, but my Russian is only enough for a vague understanding. Anyway, he's certainly not at Safin levels of (previous) involvement. Though Safin himself seems to have been disillusioned by it all and is now off traveling the world while also raising kittens it seems.

Sunday singles finals set:
Bastad: Londero vs. Jarry. Londero is seeking his second career title (he won his first earlier this year) while Jarry is seeking his first. Londero is 1-0 against Jarry
Umag: old journeyman battle-someone will win his first title! yay! 30 year old Balazs vs. 29 year old Lajovic. They've never played each other in a main draw at least
Newport: Isner vs. Bublik. Isner just survived Humbert in a long match. He is seeking his 15th title and 4th in Newport. Bublik is seeking his first title. Never played before
Bucharest: Tig vs. Rybakina Both are seeking their first title yay! and they've never played before
Lausanne: Cornet vs. Ferro Cornet is seeking her 7th title and Ferro her 1st. Never played before

Mother Mary became a jesus freak, but I might have too if I grew up with that father.... very moving speech though. God I want her to come back to the tour and punish these girls' second serves, haha. Has Li Na had work done? She looks great either way and I always liked her personality.
Patricia Tig making the final in Bucharest (her home tournament) is such a story! She is an unranked player right now (only has an ITF ranking, not a WTA one). She had injuries and took about 2 years off to have a baby - cue the Serena jokes. Bucharest gave her a Wildcard into qualifying, and she has won all her matches including beating top seed and defending champ Sevastova.
She was actually quite a good player before she left the tour. Made the QF of Madrid a few years ago beating Kasatkina, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys etc.
If she wins the title tonight she becomes the first unranked player to do so since Mirjana Lucic in 1997. Who was a junior at the time and had no WTA ranking. Bol (Croatia tournament) said they would offer her a qualies WC if she left the junior tour and turned pro... she did so, two days later was in her first pro event as a qualifier, won the title at barely 15 years old, and the rest is history.
I thought Clijsters might have been unranked when she won her first US Open after her kid but turns out she had points from Cincinatti and other US hard court tournament so was technically ranked.

Umag: Lajovic def. Balazs 7-5 7-5 for his first title! yay!
Newport: Isner def. Bublik 7-6 (2) 6-3 for his 15th title and 4th in Newport
Bucharest: Rybakina def. Tig 6-2 6-0 for her first title! yay!
Lausanne: Ferro def. Cornet 6-1 2-6 6-1 for her first title! yay!
Too bad about Newport. We could have had a 5 first time title winner sweep otherwise. but Isner's serve is so damn difficult for anyone outside the top 30 to deal with consistently. He did almost lose this week but no one was consistent enough. Bublik even served for the first set today but got very tight

Peter McNamara has died. Prostate cancer.
Had a stint in the top 10 in singles where he beat the likes of McEnroe, Connors, Gerulatis, and Lendl, but more well known as a multiple grand slam champ in doubles with Paul McNamee (one of the best teams in history). He used to coach Grigor Dimitrov, Mark Phillipoussis, and was coaching Chinese #1 Qiang Wang up until the end of last year, where she ended her career-best season ranking of #14.

R42 I agree with the average movement comment, but 'on the verge of tears' is a bit perplexing. :/ I can hardly remember a player who smiled more on the court than she did. She is grinning throughout the Graf match (highlights posted in either this thread or the one before). Even when losing she seemed very pleasant at the net and overjoyed at her achievement.
When she was runner up to Clijsters and Henin at two slams in 2005, or even the same year where she suffered a tough loss to Venus at Wimbledon in the QF (she had just wasted about 5 set points and was still beaming and polite to Venus). She beat Mauresmo at the YEC that year in the round robin, and was smiling the whole way through the final a few days later even though Mauresmo was beating her.
Here's the classic Sports Illustrated article about her psycho father (from 1993). I had forgotten what a creep he was, didn't realise he actually spent time in jail, assaulted people, was banned from all the tennis events, and stole their passports too.... this guy walked so Damir Dokic could run.

It's a master 500. So he probably disagreed with the presentation fees (which do not apply for Master 1000 since they are mandatory for top players).
At least when you give $500,000 to Federer, you know he'll probably qualify for the final. Zverev is always a question mark: even if he gets only one fifth of what Federer gets, will he at least pass the first two rounds? No one knows. The guy is a liability.

I would rather see Granny Vee have another moment in the sun. She was SO close to another slam final at Flushing Meadows in 2017 before Sloane Stephens stole the match away in the 11th hour. And I really think she would have beaten Keys in the final, who laid an egg on the big occasion.
Venus also loves playing in NY but has lost to the eventual champion NINE times at the US Open (as well as 3 eventual runner ups), usually falling dramatically in the SF against Clijsters, Serena, Henin, Hingis, Davenport, etc. after giving them their toughest match of the championship.
Even though she's been injured all year she's been making a real effort to improve (unlike Serena who despite the bigger results has been focused on celebrity work), playing warm up events etc. Would be nice to see her rewarded for her efforts and it would relax her a bit in terms of Olympic qualification.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | July 26, 2019 5:17 PM

I know it's still a year out but I cant see Venus qualifying for Olympics singles. The young American women are only going to get better.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | July 26, 2019 5:27 PM

I think she has an outside chance, especially if Madison Keys stays injured (sorry Maddy lol). It helps that the points started accruing during the grass season, and aside from Serena and Alison Riske (who is unlikely to go on any huge runs outside of grass and Asian tournaments) they almost all lost early at Wimbledon.
So I see Serena and Sloth Stephens as being likely (the latter always manages to put together one good run in amongst all the shit performances), with Kenin/Collins/Venus/Keys fighting for the last two spots. Perhaps Riske if she keeps up the good form.
Anisimova is obviously only going to get better but you have to play THREE Fed Cups from 2018 to 2019, and she has played zero (even the Williamses have played one), unlikely to be able to complete all 3 before Tokyo. And her great run at the French means nothing for her Tokyo qualification. Kenin has done well so far with Mallorca title but most of her results are at the international level, and only the best 16 results are counted towards Tokyo (I believe) with most of them having to be slam or PM.
Gauff is too young to get enough tournaments and Fed Cup appearances to make it this time. So Venus is still in the mix, but she's quite lucky that the others flopped at Wimbledon too because that should have been her biggest opportunity for a big ranking points haul between now and Tokyo. The last two Olympics she went on a tear to make it in, but obviously her body is in worse shape this time around.

R130 I've been saying for a while now Tiafoe has a great ass. Of all the #NextGen he has the GOAT ass. If he can only get back to winning he could be really popular. This year he's only done well at the AO and Miami. Those are obviously 2 very big events but the rest of the year he's barely won a match

R131 Truly! And whoever Vee's cameraperson is, needs a raise for capturing it so beautifully. The shot at 4:38 is sublime lol.
I do think he needs some work on his technique though. The drive/mentality/effort is there, the fitness seems to be there as well. But that giant wind-up on his big scooping forehand leaks errors any time an opponent rushes him (which is often). His netplay is abysmal. And his serve can cave under pressure too.

De Miñaur defeated Opelka.
Is really amazing that someone without big weapons like Alex is able to compete that well (maybe his serve, his forehand and backhand don't get him fast points but he is one of the fastest players on tour)

R141: That's the only way to understand his early success.
He played with Davidovich in Spain when they were young, Alex was one of the top players but not the top player. Davidovich has bigger weapons and even an arsenal of tricks, but in terms of mentality he is a mess.
De Miñaur reminds me of Hewitt without the bad attitude, he is fast and he is focused. With Nadal and Djokovic playing i don't know if that will be good enough to get a GS, but when they retire (and i doubt Nadal will last more than a couple of seasons) things can be different

Weird loss for Bertens, and yes weird that she wanted to play this tournament (I think she was there holidaying and signed up). It's not like she NEEDS to vulture wins either. She can hang with the top girls. In fact I think she is 3rd on the tour when it comes to top 10 wins this year. In Madrid alone she beat Halep, Stephens, Kvitova, Sevastova, Ostapenko, and Siniakova on clay in one week, without dropping a set. That's much tougher than most slam draws. Why did she struggle with this ITF level final and draw? Bizarre scheduling choice when she has to defend Cincinnati in just a few weeks.
Sevastova wins at home in Jurmala, Latvia in three tight sets. Not her best tennis but it was clear there was a lot of pressure. The success of this event sticking around on the tour was basically resting on her shoulders all week after Ostapenko got eliminated in round 1.

to be fair A. Zverev has already achieved way more than Dimitrov at a much younger age. The only thing missing is going deeper at the slams. If he flops at the USO it would be a big disappointment for him but he's not "over". He has several years to get his act together and he's still deeply entrenched in the top 10. Dimitrov is spinning out of control
Curious to see how he'll fare in Los Cabos this week. Good news for him is he's drawn Johnson who is already struggling to win matches this season

Grigor caught the attention of people at a young age, the whole baby Federer thing and he was on the verge of defeating Nadal very young, but the truth is he won his first title quite old.
Zverev has achieved way more than Dimitrov, this was not a good season for Alexander but he has time (but he should start to change at GS as soon as possible, i'm not talking about winning, i'm talking about reaching second week for a change).
Curiously he could easily lose being the number one of the next gen this week. He will slip at least a position (Nishikori is already ahead him). Tsitsipas with a decent performance could reach number 5. Of course Tsitsipas has to defend a lot of points at the Rogers cup, but he probably win points on the american hard courts swing because his results at Cincinatti and the US Open last year were far from great

Being labeled "Baby Fed" seems to be a curse. Gasquet was the first to get that nickname even though his game is all about his backhand rather than forehand. Gasquet of course initially did very well on the men's tour and looked like a contender for big titles but has since fallen to middling status. He hasn't been a factor in such a long time.
Dimitrov didn't have instant success when he joined the tour but really started coming into his own in his mid-20s. It seems now that he just benefited from the year when the big 4 were up and down with their form and health. Since the return of the big 3, Dimitrov not only lost to them but he lost to a lot of other players too.
Tsitsipas is the next guy getting the "Baby Fed" label. Hopefully he won't have the same fate as Gasquet and Dimitrov.

You only need to watch the Les petits as match between Gasquet and Nadal when they were both 12 to watch how fearless Gasquet was as a kid. His game was way more aggressive.
Like Rafa, he defeated Roger in their first match, but for some reason he never fullfiled the player he was destined to be. I don't know if him being shy and the so much pressure French federation put on him crushed his potential, but he only was a shadow of what he was meant to be.
I remember watching him playing against Murray, and during a short period of time he totally destroyed Andy. Andy's game was useless, but after a few moments he started to choke and he ended losing very clearly the match.
The worst thing is that he became one of those top players that you know for sure he is going to lose against any of the big 3 without even giving them a fight

Strange, r176, but in one of Navratilova’s murder mysteries (I think it was the first, [italic]The Total Zone[/italic], but I might be mistaken) there’s a female tennis player who’s a bible-thumping fundie but always travels with her “special secretary” who is obviously her lover. R179 that is hilarious! Added to my reading list.
R171 I do think the French Federation has a real knack for turning talented juniors into chokers under enormous pressure. Gasquet was set up to be an incredible player and crumbled as he developed. Monfils won three junior slams in a row and had all the talent in the world (in France he was getting almost Cori Gauff-levels of expectations). The main thing stopping him was mentality. And now, his body. Because the skill is STILL there.
Even on the female side Amelie Mauresmo could not perform at home (like at all) and still choked away a lot of big matches (as did Mary Fierce). Caroline Garcia has amazing movement, one of the best serves on tour, huge forehand and backhand, a superb net game, and is good on all surfaces.... in 2017 she defeated basically every top player in the game in the space of a just two weeks (Halep, Kvitova, Wozniacki, Barty, Kerber, Svitolina). She just lost in the second round of the Jurmala Latvia tournament to a French player ranked outside the top 100. Something isn't working.
Meldonia and Venus have taken wild cards into the Western and Southern Open. Huge field, basically every top player is there according to their website

Buzarnescu was the defending champ in San Jose and got knocked out by Kasatkina in R1. She immediately drops down to 122 in the world. Might be near the end for the Romanian.
Why is Bethanie Mattek Sands still getting WCs? She hasn't even played a singles match since the French Open LAST year. Aside from the fact that she's obnoxious and got a TUE for anabolic steroids (lol), she has had so many WCs throughout her career and still not achieved anything in singles. Vee used to give me asexual vibes (one of those women who just loves her family so much and never thinks to find friends or lovers - she is happy to follow Serena around, lose to her in finals, give gracious runner up speeches, and beg to play doubles with her). But after Serena had that baby she's talked more about having kids in the future. I think Vee is just very independent. She runs her two companies and is OBSESSED with her dog. She has had some good white peen in the past and is a renowned cougar, but probably doesn't have the time (or doesn't care enough) to settle down with a man.
Having said that she just recently dumped that billionaire heir and has followed her ex back (he's in his early 40s I think - pictured below). Has been hanging out with Grigor Dimitrov a bit more lately, and she and Tiafoe were also chatting it up at World Team Tennis and looked very chummy in her Youtube video. He seems very serious about his girlfriend though...

She really is such a calming and elegant force, truly the elder stateswoman of the tour. Just gets on with the job (and has given us a lot of great matches over the years - in my opinion her movement and hitting in her prime hasn't been matched since). I'm still mad she didn't win a slam in 2017. But it's truly remarkable she's still playing... this is a woman who was in the same main draws as Martina Navratilova in the early 90s!
ALSO: this is bizarre but 2004 Olympic Gold medalist Nicolas Massu is playing doubles in Austrian Open with Thiem's brother! This must mean he's been available for doping tests (and presumably has performed them) all these years since his retirement, just in case? Interesting.

Bublik what a nutty player he is. One 1 hand it's fun that you don't know what he's going to do point to point but on the other he makes a lot of stupid decisions. He's going to piss off a lot of players with his mixing in of underhanded serves and sometimes a 2nd serve bomb. I want to see how the big 3 handle him. Tiafoe went up 6-1 3-1 before Bublik went up 5-3 and served for it and Tiafoe eventually won in a tiebreak. Tiafoe finally decided on match point to step way in for the return and Bublik double faulted. Frances basically dared him to hit another underhanded serve or another 2nd serve ace and Bublik blinked.

Venus completes a trio of embarrassing losses from the 'American elite' (her, Sloane, Madison). Hers may be the worst though. I've seen a lot of cringeworthy losses for her over the years but that one is up there.
Having said that, I saw a bit of the 3rd set on Tennis Channel, and they brought up a graphic that Bethanie Mattek Sands hit 14 winners and only 2 unforced errors in that second set? Since when has she been capable of playing that well? I noticed the crowd was rooting really hard for her (much more than Cali native Venus) which surprised me, I missed most of the match but maybe she was playing amazing?

Andreescu is indeed playing the Rogers Cup. It's where she's planning to make her 'big return', but she was slated to return earlier... i'm not that confident she'll be at full strength. If it wasn't a home tournament I don't think she'd be there.
These girls really need to learn how to schedule, especially the ones with a history of broken bodies. Buzarnescu had the same thing, playing singles and doubles in every week before it finally fucked her over. Andreescu the same thing, just because she played Miami immediately after winning Newport Beach Indian Wells (when she was already injured for most of the year and had played more matches than anyone).
Barty and Vondrousova have the right idea. They have only played a small handful of events but have gone QF or better in all but two of them. And in most of those they were playing doubles as well.

by Anonymous | reply 251 | August 1, 2019 1:24 PM

Coming to appreciate Little Lauren in her comeback. I have watched a bit of her since Wimbledon and it's crazy how big she hits for her size (as well as her obviously terrific defence). Her backhand has a lot of sting on it. She almost plays like a Camila Giorgi but with slightly less power and speed, but a LOT more margin. Or like an Amanda Coetzer type player. If she can keep her momentum going I think she could be a top 20 mainstay (maybe top 10 after the big retirement wave that is likely due upon us next year).

Is Kyrgios mentally ill or is it an act?
by Anonymous | reply 256 | August 1, 2019 2:39 PM
|
R256, I don’t think it’s an act. Kyrgios cannot accept the responsibility that goes along with having talent.
by Anonymous | reply 257 | August 1, 2019 3:01 PM
|
Kyrgios is talented at something he doesn't really like.
by Anonymous | reply 259 | August 1, 2019 5:20 PM
|
Like a lot of Australian boys (I live here), it's pretty clear that in his head Kyrgios envisions himself as a black NBA player. With all the bling, partying, street talk, and urban credibility etc. that goes along with that. The sooner he stops trying to be one and decides to make the most of his talent the better. But that may never happen.
I really do find his game entertaining. He reminds me of a more consistent (but slightly less spectacular) Dustin Brown. Who ironically was engaged to Kyrgios' sister before breaking it up. I saw them at the Greek church in Melbourne one year all together.
by Anonymous | reply 260 | August 1, 2019 5:46 PM
|
Kyrgios goes to church? haha
by Anonymous | reply 261 | August 1, 2019 6:12 PM
|
R257: I think it goes beyond that. I think he is simply scared, he is scared that his talent is not enough, scared that maybe even if he takes tennis seriously he won't win a GS anyway.
Because even he is obviously talented there's no guarantee that he has the other things (apart of tennis skills) that are needed to become a champion.
All the bad boy pose is simply a way to avoid the possibility of fail.
Of course he has some extra issues. It's curious that when he started his career he was involved in controversy but it was not him but his rival the one he behaved badly (racist slurs)

another suprise
Vekic straight sets Azarenka
by Anonymous | reply 279 | August 2, 2019 3:39 AM

The only surprise is that Azarenka was up a break in the second set and a double break (serving at 4-1) in the first set. I'm not sure what to make of her predicament. She has had a LOT of shit draws since her return, but even so it feels like every time she plays a good match or two, a terrible one is right around the corner.
Hsieh is the only female seed remaining after two rounds in DC. She had to survive a third set tiebreak against a tough Russian. Camila Giorgi and Mladonna are also in the QFs.
I really thought Kyrgios would struggle more against Nishioka, but he's through in straights. Ditto for his dubs partner Titsy who won in straights against Pornstache Thompson.

Ugh I hate how he thinks saying stuff like "it slipped out of my hand!" is funny. Reminds me of "I was just folding it up for him" when he smashed his racquet and gave it to someone in the crowd. Cue the canned Big Bang Theory laughter.
He's naturally entertaining and funny without needing to try so hard and be such a stunt queen. I bet he threw the bottle just so he could say that. Knowing full well it would be caught on camera and he could say that... would he have done it if the camera wasn't right there? In an exhibition match, for example? The answer is no.
He already garners enough attention without having to outwardly be an attention-seeker.

One thing is skip the olympics because those medals are not relevant at all for your tennis careers (so you have olympic spirit and want to represent your country or not). The fact that the big 3, and Murray really liked the Olympics doesn't mean everything has to feel the same.
But Thiem goes beyond and says he wants to go Paris 2024, which is ridiculous, because he doesn't know were he'll be in 2024
