In the early 2000s when I attended UC Berkeley the city was already a hell hole as far as freedom of expression and such. I remember being stopped on the street and being lectured on how I’m destroying the environment because I was drinking my Peet’s coffee drink in a paper cup. Then I had a professor who was all about La Raza and socialism, but he also talked about his Lake Tahoe vacation home, expensive motorcycles, and how his UC pension wasn’t enough. I would have heard more except luckily I didn’t major in social sciences or liberal arts, but instead microbiology. Not much of that in the STEM majors.

The term “manhole” is being flushed out of a city’s code in an attempt to remove the gendered language.

The ultra-liberal California city of Berkeley approved an ordinance Tuesday to rename the metal discs “maintenance holes” during a push for a gender-neutral code, SF Gate reported.

Other changes include “human effort” in place of manpower; “beneficiaries” instead of heirs; “guards” to replace watchmen; and “humanmade” instead of manmade.

All pronouns will also be changed throughout the city code to “they.”

Gendered professional terms such as “fireman,” “firewoman” and “craftsman” will also be nixed for gender-neutral alternatives.

Councilmembers unanimously approved the ordinance, which is estimated to come at a cost of $600 to taxpayers, Berkleyside reported.

What happens when a government employee or a utility mistakenly uses the word the he (yes, I did that on purpose) has used and known all his life? Will the worker be fired? Will the utility be fined?
