Let Us Now Praise Margaret Dumont

Brilliant comic actress and foil to Groucho. And as a famous pearl-clutcher, she should be a patron saint of DL.

Margaret Dumont (October 20, 1882 – March 6, 1965) was an American stage and film actress. She is best remembered as the comic foil to the Marx Brothers in seven of their films. Groucho Marx called her "practically the fifth Marx brother".

Nice blog tribute.

More evidence that despite his comic brilliance, Groucho really was a miserable POS. And ungrateful.

She had an affair with Danny Kaye when he was only in his early 20's, scandalous back in the day.

^ Who bottomed?

She was perfect in her roles in the Marx Brothers movies. Perfect.

Her greatest moment: at 1:59 and following (though you have to see the whole clip to get the context).

Surely the woman who could imagine that was a person of genius.

She was the perfect foil for Groucho. And she obviously had a great sense of humor. Can't really imagine Duck Soup without her (Hail Fredonia!)

Well, I NEVER!

Considering her godfather was Joel Chandler Harris, who largely raised her, I'm surprised Disney didn't cast her as the Grandmother/Plantation Owner in Song of the South.

And the broad could sing, too! (Not that she got much of a chance to.)

I love Groucho and that big blonde dancing so wildly at r5.

I used to watch Marx brothers movies solely for him and Dumont--I never liked Chico or Harpo.

“I'm not a stooge, I'm the best straight woman in Hollywood. There's an art to playing it straight. You must build up your man, but never top him, never steal the laughs from him.”
