No direct or convenient access to any grocery store, pharmacy, hospital, physician's office, a dentist, post office, hardware store, no utilities, etc. Beautiful, but weather is bitter the majority of the year.

I saw this on PBS years ago and found it fascinating. I myself am a huge introvert but don’t know if I wanna be that isolated.

He had a Bolex camera, which operated by winding it, like a clock. The documentary has several parts to it. I have the DVD and when i've had a rotten day, a good stiff drink and watching Dick Proenneke in Alaska soothes.

He thought he was going blind (related to his work as a machinist), so he went to Alaska to absorb as much beauty as he could before he lost his vision. He spent one winter up at the cabin. The rest of his years, he came back down somewhere to the lower 48 for the worst of the winter. He did this for almost 35 years. At 85, I think, he retired to CA, to live with his younger brother and 3 years later died of a stroke. It may be that i am off by 5 years somewhere cuz i think he was 83 when he died.

He said he never had so much as a cold when he lived in Alaska. Likely due to there not being anyone to catch one from. My favorite scenes of the movie are watching him cook. I think of his story and compare it to that kid, Chris McCandless, the one who went to Alaska, to live off the land and died of starvation in an abandoned school bus (Into the Wild). Dick Proenneke was not stupid. He had friends and regular contact with them. He maintained a huge correspondence, regularly order supplies and earned money documenting wildlife for the Park Service.

Remember the kween who thiought he could befriend the Alaskan bears and got himself eaten?

Shawn James (R22) is also a fan of dick Roenneke's. He is doing something slightly different, which is to test himself for the ability to be self-reliant. He takes on projects and learns as he goes and takes his viewers with him. He built his beautiful cabin, an outdoor summer kitchen, a sauna and i think he's doing a guest house next. Really fun to watch. He and Proenneke are both highly skilled craftsmen.
