A short thread, in other words.

by Anonymousreply 7July 10, 2019 3:26 AM

Haha. I don't think so. There are plenty of buildings that look like the architects really didn't care about aesthetics but there are some beautiful ones.

When the throngs of tourists visit Epstein's townhouse, what types of meaningful objects do you thing they'll leave in the shrine on the steps? S&M anatomically correct teddy bears? Massage oils? Bubblicious?

by Anonymousreply 10July 10, 2019 3:39 AM

Why do people want to live like that? All that money just to fight roaches and hear people fighting through the walls?

If I spent that kind of money I'd want 1,000s of acres and a private lake.

by Anonymousreply 11July 10, 2019 4:28 AM

Hey, I used to live at 350 West 85th Street!

It used to be a convent, and my old landlord the late Jack Silverman (a classic) owned most of the buildings on the block. It's haunted, as I saw a ghost there. I know I really saw it because I am the LAST PERSON ON EARTH to believe such nonsense!

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2019 2:58 PM

Really, R12. What exactly happened and what did you see? Any idea who the ghost might be?

by Anonymousreply 18July 10, 2019 3:01 PM

[quote] ... and hear people fighting through the walls?

I don't know. For $56 million you probably get very good soundproofing. The facade is limestone and the sides are probably brick. It's not like more modern buildings that have wood frames and dry wall -- ie. terrible soundproofing. I'm sure the wealthy families that built these houses 90 years ago wanted privacy.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2019 3:14 PM

R19, one of the selling points of prewar construction is that the wall are thick; you do NOT hear the neighbors.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2019 3:20 PM

r16 I believe it is Pan

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2019 3:20 PM

While in the neighborhood, one should not miss the opportunity to smoke a joint while strolling past the old Madoff building.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 22July 10, 2019 3:27 PM

That's what I thought, R20. Mr. Epstein needs his privacy.

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2019 3:30 PM

R21, is there any significance to having Pan carved above the doorway or is it just decoration?

r24 I don't know. I can only guess that the original builder had a large ego so had a God put on the threshold of his home/bldg. It was probably also popular like gargoyles and such.

by Anonymousreply 26July 10, 2019 3:45 PM

It boggles my mind that Epstein or anyone owns a 50,000 sq ft mansion in Manhattan.

I would've thought those mega mansions had been subdivided eons ago.

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject but I think a lot of the really grandiose mansions that cost a fortune to maintain were knocked down decades ago and replaced by apartment buildings or stores or office buildings, especially if they were along Fifth Avenue or in Midtown. Many of those that remain are museums or belong to institutions. The Felix Warburg house is now the Jewish Museum. The Isaac Fletcher house is now the Ukrainian Institute of America. The Rhinelander mansion has belonged to Ralph Lauren for a long time. I think the Pulitzer mansion is subdivided. My guess is that a lot of the townhouses on the side streets of the Upper East Side are single family residences. Hopefully someone who knows New York much better than I do will answer your question. I heard that the International Center for Photography was bought and converted to a private single family residence.

Epstein's townhouse has a heated sidewalk in front so any falling snow melts.

50,000 square feet can't be accurate. I've read 50,000 and 20,000, and the latter is in line with being one of the larges private residences in Manhattan. Right now the largest Upper East Side house for sale is 13,000 sq. ft.

New York Historical Society

The New-York Historical Society's museum is the oldest in New York City and predates the founding of the Metropolitan Museum of Art by nearly 70 years.

If it hasn't been mentioned, Brooklyn Bridge Park.

A Metro North train trip from Grand Central to Cold Spring, about 50 minutes each way and not expensive, sit on the left. The view of the Hudson, Palisades, West Point and Storm King will astound you. There are trails to hike up the hills behind town for some really great views (there is an outdoor store near on Main Street by the train exit that will give you maps and directions....for free). And/or you can wander the sort of boring town, get something to eat then head back to NYC, sit on the right this time.

R418, what are you interested in? I'll think of more things (R417). Also, the round trip off peak fare from Grand Central to Cold Spring (you'll be traveling off peak) is $30. Really, a bargain for the experience.

When friends visit NYC, I give them two pieces of advice: 1) like in any great city, be open to the energy and the magic of serendipity, amazing things will happen if you do, but don't be a fool; 2) In NYC never look the police in the eye. If you need help approach a regular person (people are amazed how friendly and helpful we are) or a fire truck or fire house. Avoid the NYPD unless absolutely necessary.

by Anonymousreply 420July 29, 2019 1:03 AM

Thank you, R420, but I'm not really planning to visit New York in the near future. Maybe a more accurate title for this thread would be "Favorite Photos of NYC". I've been looking through skyscrapercity threads. There are tons of very similar photos of the skyline, Empire State Building, Flatiron Building, etc. which can get incredibly tedious after a while, but there are also some outstanding photos.

I've been to New York about four or five times and did the usually touristy stuff. I liked the botanical garden in the Bronx and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was going to see the natural history museum but there was a huge line up in the entrance hall so I gave up. One of the times I went to visit was not long after 9-11 and there was a soldier with a rifle in the subway car. That made me feel very nervous. I like the ornate historical townhouses on the Upper East Side. The observation deck at Rockefeller Center looks cool but I'll bet you have to wait a long time in line. I was in one of the buildings at Rockefeller Center and I liked the Art Deco look of the place but if you're not there on business, they don't let you do much looking around. I liked the vibe on the Upper West Side when I walked through there to take a photo of the Pythian Temple.

I'm basically saying what in New York makes for the most beautiful or interesting photos but you can certainly mention what are the most fun experiences.

OK. I got it. I highly recommend Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

by Anonymousreply 422July 29, 2019 2:27 AM

Another vote for Green-Wood Cemetery, if you go take the twilight tour which takes you into the catacombs. It's also one of the largest arboretums in North America with lots of old growth trees.

by Anonymousreply 423July 29, 2019 10:22 AM

Yes, I've read that Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn was popular among the rich and powerful and has some impressive mausoleums and a nice park like setting. Great suggestion.

I finally figured out what the carved faces above doors are, eg in the original post (9 East 71st Street). They're called mascarons, an ornament usually of a human face, sometimes frightening or chimeric whose alleged function was originally to frighten away evil spirits so that they would not enter the building. Later on, they became purely decorative.
