It was NYC. Even back then they had rent control, so it must've been a hot market.
The Ricardos paid $125 month to Ethel and Fred.
He had at least six apartments

Why would anybody want to live in that building?

Sides of beef were barbecued in the furnace. There were false fire alarms followed by falling vats of Henna Rinse. TVs were shoved off balconies. Tenants ran their own food processing plants in apartment kitchens. Floor shows and vaudeville routines were constantly rehearsed in the flats. Contraband pets were stashed in pianos. Superhero clad zanies stalked window ledges. The list of code violations— health, building and otherwise— goes on.

Sorry. If you have trouble understanding why Fred was so worried about losing a tenant, let me tell you. The character of Fred was cheap and worried about money.

It was NYC he was a rich landlord, why would he be worried? Fred wasn't so cheap, he sprang for Ethel's trip to Hollywood.

Because their brownstone at 623 E 68th street was in the middle of the East River. It wasn't in an ideal location, so getting tenants was tough.

r13 Did I mention the Connecticut Airbnb I stayed in with the live chickens in the closet, wax tulips in the garden and the barbecue grill that looked like a dropped pie?

Remember when Fred threw out Dr Bellows for being a homosexual?

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
