While in NYC, it may be acceptable to list all your sexual turn ons and have your face attached, I assume it would be less so in rural America.

If I lived in conservative small-town America, I wouldn't put my picture or name out there on the apps. Who knows what kind of repressed psycho closet case is looking for "queers to beat up", what good Christian local employers are looking to see whose lifestyle is incompatible with the values of their workplace, which local fraus are looking for gossip about their neighbors, or what shadowy "brotherhood" is looking for someone to make an example of.

You do NOT want to find yourself the outsider, in a community dominated by good white conservative Christian middle Americans.

I was once traveling for work somewhere very rural in the south (years ago, can’t remember), and I fired up Scruff just to see who might be around. Much like this describes, the grid was almost all blanks or faceless photos and the closest person was about 10 miles from my home. By the second line of the grid it was guys 20-. Being a city guy and out forever with zero fucks left to give, of course I had a clear face pic.

I didn’t make a single move myself, because the pickins were so slim, but someone with a blank profile messaged me minutes after logging on to ask if I was crazy for showing my face and “you don’t know what it’s like here!” Like I’d be gay bashed or worse if I showed my face in public. I get that gay life is different in these places, but the paranoia and panic were a bit much too take.

R3, I think the point is that even “out” gay people in rural areas don’t advertise openly online.

I'm out and in a city but still don't have my face on these apps. Why? The best reason I found after my real reasons is that not having a face pic stops narcissists dead in their tracks. They will usually ask me for one, but I decline. They usually ask why, and I tell them I don't have one. Then their heads explode and they tell me that there's something wrong with me because I don't have a face pic. I tell them that I'm sparing them the pain of my indescribably ugly face.

And I tell them that almost nobody had a face pic 10 years ago and the only reason they have since is Grindr forced the issue because it didn't allow X pics.

Somehow it has become so necessary to many to have a face pic that they shame those who don't in their profiles. Or they claim you have something to hide. It's weird how quickly some mores can change.

What I’m surprised by with this article, and something that many here seem to miss, is that when I come to a new town I like chatting with new guys in the area online, and scruff is just a convenient way to do it. I rarely even actually hook up online, but I do chat with guys and find out interesting things about the area that I’m in, whether it be Chicago or Harper valley. That these “discreet” types miss out on this is a bit of a pity.
