The most horrible "toddler slips out of adult's grasp" incident is still the one where the mother accidentally dropped her small child into a zoo exhibit filled with African painted dogs (they're like hyenas) and had to watch him get torn to shreds.
If I was that mother I honestly would just kill myself rather than live with that memory.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | July 8, 2019 7:11 PM |
This is worse than that, R59. Remember those skits where David Letterman would drop a watermelon off the roof? That child is splattered all over that concrete, with an exploded skull and every bone in her body shattered. It will be a miracle if they get any remains at all.
The grandfather should be charged with reckless endangerment, although it is quite possible that a trauma like this could kill him.

I used to work at the Empire State Building, and we had a jumper who was obliterated when he hit the sidewalk. Our office was on 10th floor, and it sounded like a car bomb went off outside.
There was nothing left of him, just a pile of clothes. They had to use fire hoses to remove the remains from the sidewalk.

Something about being on boats and loss of common sense? My nation has a fleet of car ferries plying the mainland/island routes. A friend doing PR for them, back in the day, talked of several tragic incidents which he helped to smooth over. They generally involved babies or toddlers being 'pretend' dangled or held up for 'better views' being dropped over the rear viewing decks onto the car decks below.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | July 9, 2019 3:43 PM |
Judging from the photo at R123, having an open window like that is not safe, especially with small children onboard.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | July 9, 2019 3:57 PM |
The windows slide open sideways and it takes effort to open them. They are about chest high. It’s obvious when they are open. They open for air flow when it gets hot in that area or one side is up sometimes smoking ( or used to be) on some ships. People don’t fall off of cruise ships. They either jump, fall doing something stupid, or are dropped by the elderly.

Little kids can’t get into the “cage”. They have to be dropped in by a negligent mother.
And the DA was seriously considering filing criminal charges against the mother, but ultimately decided not to. So no, it wasn’t clear that she “didn’t do anything wrong.”

Now the family's attorney - it appears to have taken them about 5 seconds to lawyer up - are saying it wasn't grandpa's fault at all and that it is the cruise ship company who bears ALL the blame because grandpa couldn't tell if the window had a pane of glass in it or not. Grandpa thought the glass was just exceptionally spotless.
I'm looking at the pic of the window the baby fell out of. I'm going to go with the original reports of the child slipping out of grandpa's arms.

Geez what a horrible way to die; there was an incident a few years ago when a mentally ill (or at least one would assume) threw her toddler granddaughter off the 3rd floor walkway way at the Tysons Corner mall to get back at her daughter for getting pregnant by a guy that grandma didn't like
I'm not surprised these people lawyered up & they'll undoubtedly get something, but holding up a toddler chest height to an open window is just negligent. All toddlers squirm & you'd think you would keep them clear if anything they could come in contact with.
Has Mother Pence weighed in dangling children out the window - even if they're not illegal immigrants?

The cruise line is clearly at fault here. The idea of having an open window, or a window that is easily opened, that is open to the ground 150' below it, is obviously not safe.
The family should have been keeping a better eye on the baby, but the cruise line is also at fault.

Grandpa obviously has a problem with eyesight and ledges. If he hadn't dropped the baby out the window, he eventually would have cast her over the railings. It is horrible that it happened, but it is not the cruise line's fault.

I am going with Grandpa is a drinker. FFS, the kid should not have been endangered. The mother saw it, why did they have poor judgment, alchy Gramps holding her?
The lawyer makes a living suing cruise lines, he likely contacted them. That the family delayed speaking to the police, with daddio a cop himself, is, however, telling.
The video will be horrific but should indicate what actually happened. Who would trust a pane of glass at that height anyway? Plexiglass is NOT glass.

by Anonymous | reply 279 | July 10, 2019 6:47 PM |
What gets me about this is the horror of a moment that will forever change the lives of a family. One minute you're a happy group on the exciting first day of a long planned for cruise. You're looking forward to the coming days of fun and frolic, while letting your cares drift away.
Then, in one epic, ghastly flash of a second, your world changes radically because:
1) you're the grandpa who dropped his granddaughter to a certain grisly death, marking yourself as a pariah until the end of your days
2) you're the parents who in a stomach lurching change of everything, realize your beloved baby is dead, along with all of your hopes and dreams
3) you're the grandma who thinks, "I never should have married that idiot and now I'm filing for the divorce I should have got years ago."
4) you're a shaken up passenger on the ship whose vacation will result in tragic memories of sudden death
All around a terrible ordeal.

It happened on the Golden Gate Bridge 20 years back that a family was walking across at the north end when their toddler slipped and fell between a 9.5" space between the sidewalk and a metal beam. It had never been noticed as a danger before but the toddler tripped in a way that in a second it fell through the space and fell 167 feet to a concrete ledge before.

For what it's worth, in the photos of that section of the ship that were included in some of the articles about this tragedy, it's 100 percent clear and very obvious that that window was open and the ones on either side of it were closed.

by Anonymous | reply 304 | July 10, 2019 9:38 PM |
From the photos, it looks like the glass is tinted. If this is the case, it should have been obvious that the one window was open. Gramps probably propped the kid up on the ledge for the view and thought he would just hold her. Until she wriggled out of his hands and plummeted to her death. This is where the "he was dangling her out the window" came from in the original account. The family's subsequent statements are obviously damage control.
To add to R280's list: The parents will likely divorce, too. Many marriages fall apart after the death of a child. The whole family is fucked.

If it's any consolation for them, the dad is a cop and the divorce rate within the police force is 70-80% so they were probably going to divorce anyway, regardless of whether the kid lived or not.

In one of the photos of that section of the ship that was included in some of the articles, taken from outside the ship, it was very clear that one window was open and all or most of the others were not. But I have to admit that in another photo of the same wall of windows, taken from INSIDE the ship, it's much less obvious. Both photos from both shooting points are included in this article, so you can all look and make your own judgment.

I think you are probably right and that's exactly what he did, for that reason. Then, when the baby wriggled out of his grasp and fell to her death, he probably thought as quickly as he could and tried to come with some kind of story that would resolve him of responsibility, leading to the "I didn't know the window was open" defense.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | July 11, 2019 7:42 PM |
The window wall is not at 90 perpendicular to the floor. The wall of windows juts out slightly. If gramps approached that window with baby at window height, baby was pretty much out over the dock or sea, not over the floor. Baby didn't need to hit the window sill, it would be a sheer drop straight down.

Should be a murder investigation especially now that the family is suing the cruise ship. It's sign of the times that there's an increase in child "accidents" such as "forgetting" your infant kids in the car. People are either evolutionary-wise dumber or they see $$$ with lawsuits by sacrificing their kids. Maybe it's just me feeling extra cynical but I've worked in psych and deal with some seriously damaged people who did fucked up things that make you want to hate humanity sometimes.

This is the part I don't understand, especially if the window (on the ship) is made out of glass. She could have broken the glass and injured herself and others. I'm not familiar with hockey culture, but someone upthread pointed out that the glass is actually plexiglass.

Even if grandpa didn't mean to toss her over, it is at the very least child endangerment due to him being under the influence of a substance AND placing the child in danger. I'm sensing though it could be more sinister than that scenario, people do fucked up things for money and lawsuits or perpetuating frauds are more common than you think. I used to deal with patients who wanted me to write them off for disability or document non-existing injuries as part of their record so they could then file lawsuits. I don't put any shit past people now because of what I'd seen and dealt with in my work.

The toddler didn’t crawl out that open window, or even reach it by climbing. She was placed in a ledge in front of it, by a careless adult. The grandfather and the money-grubbing parents need to take some personal responsibility rather than looking to hold anyone but themselves accountable. It’s not the cruise line’s fault.

What will probably happen is the cruise lines insurance company will pay them something, (not the amount the family wants) if they sign an agreement that the cruise line is not at fault and they go away. The family lawyers will take a chunk of the settlement and taxes will take another bite.

Exactly. There's no way any child would have been endangered by that open window without an adult to life her up to it and drop her out of it. And yes, if you go by the logic that "there shouldn't be an open window" in that area, then every deck, every balcony, every rail on the ship would have to be enclosed in plexiglass, or whatever.

Over 50 years ago when I was about 12 I was walking through our little local shopping center and witnessed one woman holding another's infant. When she handed the baby back to the mother she let go before the mother got a good grip on her baby.
The baby fell directly to the pavement, flat on its back and the back of its head hit hard. The women screamed and the mother quickly picked it up. That image haunts me to this day and I wonder if the baby was permanently injured.
What a terrible thing for both women to live with, especially the idiot woman who let go before the mother was firmly holding the kid. Stupid bitch.

R555, not fiction. True story.

Has anything new happened in this case? I haven't seen anything.

r559 Good. The law's the law. Though I'm sure he won't see a day in prison, unless the child's mother wants to see that.

It would seem that not pressing charges would greatly reduce the family's payout from the cruise company.

He should be charged. The cruise line wasn't at fault.

Just saw on Inside Edition they are still suing the cruise ship for something that was Grandpa's fault

Just saw the clip from the news conference and they are suing Royal Caribbean. They said they are angry but they are taking it out on the wrong thing.

You're all being very hard on the grandfather. For all we know, he had just been eating buttered toast.

He lifts the baby up and out, then drops it. Fucking idiot. .
by Anonymous | reply 567 | December 19, 2019 10:51 AM |
The video quality is really bad, but didn't he look out the open window for a few seconds BEFORE he lifts the baby up and drops her? How can he still claim he did not know the window was open? Prosecutors offered him a plea deal so doesn't have to go to jail, but he has to admit his guilt. His lawyer said he is not considering it and wants a jury trial. Bet his family is still hoping for a big pay day/settlement from Royal Caribbean.

He stuck his head out the window and looked down, then picked her up. Lying!
by Anonymous | reply 569 | December 19, 2019 12:58 PM |
The video makes Grandpa's culpability clear. They are greedy morons if they continue to reject the generous plea deal that's been offered.

Hope Santa brings r568 new glasses for Xmas. The video clearly proves the grandfather knew the window was open. Not only that, that was a very long time to dangle an infant. Even MJ didn't dangle his child that long.

Grandpa pleads guilty
by Anonymous | reply 577 | February 27, 2020 5:50 AM |
He's one of those who told the media, "I don't care what the sentence would be — nothing could be worse than what I put myself through."
Then why plead not guilty and then cop to a guilty plea when the video surfaces?
And if "nothing could be worse," then by all means serve the sentence, Paw-Paw Dropsy.

This past holiday season must have shown Grandpa that a few holidays away from his family's anger stares might not be so bad.
Were the parent's waiting to get pregnant with a do-over child until they could get a settlement?
