Taylor's Gold Pear - but they are absurdly expensive.

by Anonymousreply 2July 8, 2019 1:59 AM

A lot of times, pears aren’t ripe when you buy them. I used to like to bring them to the beach. I’d either leave them on the dashboard in the parking lot, or in a plastic bag and bring them with me and leave them in the sun. They basically cook in the sun, and after a few hours, they’re sweet and juicy. Just perfect.

I usually purchase red pears, so I believe they must be Red Anjou. Pear trees are very long-lived. There is a pear tree in the back yard three houses down that was there when I was a little boy (a long time ago). Traditionally, pears were eaten at table, with a silver fruit knife, peeling and coring the fruit before succumbing to its simple blandishments.

I really like a low-hanging pear.

I like bosc pears. Those are the ones that are good for baking, no?

by Anonymousreply 7July 8, 2019 2:17 AM

The Anjou is the understated pear.

by Anonymousreply 8July 8, 2019 2:41 AM

A nice, juicy, ripe Bartlett with some blue cheese and walnuts is my idea of heaven.

by Anonymousreply 9July 8, 2019 4:26 AM

Asian pears always seem watery to me.

by Anonymousreply 10July 8, 2019 4:28 AM

Racist!

by Anonymousreply 11July 8, 2019 4:33 AM

I like the Christmas Pear.

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2019 10:29 PM

My favorite pear is actually spelled pair.

Quince jelly is a rare treat!

by Anonymousreply 18July 9, 2019 1:31 AM

This thread has gone pear-shaped!

I learned this expression in a bank heist/British spy/1970s retro movie. Since it came out, I’ve heard the expression more and more in the US.

by Anonymousreply 19July 9, 2019 2:16 AM

I don't usually like pears because in my experience they tend to be mushy. Are there non-mushy pears?

by Anonymousreply 20July 9, 2019 2:20 AM

Those Royal Riviera's from Harry and David

by Anonymousreply 21July 9, 2019 2:26 AM

R20, they don’t start mushy. You must eat them too late.

by Anonymousreply 22July 9, 2019 2:39 AM

Isn’t the “Bartlett”, the boring pear?

by Anonymousreply 23July 9, 2019 2:44 AM

R23 Let Bartlett be Bartlett!

by Anonymousreply 24July 9, 2019 2:59 AM

They're out of season, OP.

by Anonymousreply 25July 9, 2019 3:16 AM

Clapp's Favorite originally bred in Dorchester, Massachusetts. We even have a giant bronze statue to commemorate this amazing feat.

If I can’t have the carbon one, I’d like a red one.

by Anonymousreply 27July 13, 2019 10:19 PM

Pears are the 9ne fruit I prefer over ripe rather than under. The blue cheese and walnuts sounds delicious.

by Anonymousreply 28July 13, 2019 10:25 PM

R20 Asian pears are not mushy. They are crisp and crunchy and as someone pointed out watery. I also find them the least chemically in taste.

by Anonymousreply 29July 13, 2019 10:40 PM

Thank you all for the tips. I confess my experience with pears is limited to whatever my mom brought home from the grocery store, probably pre-bagged with no indication of type. Asian pears sound perfect.

by Anonymousreply 30July 14, 2019 8:42 AM

Just had a disappointing Bosc Pear.

by Anonymousreply 31July 20, 2019 1:07 AM

I prefer "Asian" pears.

Those otherwise inedible hard green pears are delicious poached in white wine and a vanilla pod, then served cold.

[quote]What’s your favorite banana?

Bananas are ghetto.

by Anonymousreply 37July 20, 2019 4:08 PM

I'm allergic to them.

If I eat one I come out in spots on my hands and arms.

It's a shame because I love Williams pears, but just can't eat them. Conference pears are horrid.

by Anonymousreply 38July 20, 2019 4:24 PM

Bananas rule, R37! The heck with you, you fruit dufus!

by Anonymousreply 39July 20, 2019 5:28 PM

I'm not saying they're bad. They're just ghetto, R39.

Like nectarines.

by Anonymousreply 40July 20, 2019 6:45 PM

I read once that there is only one banana variety that most people eat, and if there’s ever a, what, virus?, blight, I guess, we’ll, no more bananas. We'll have to eat ersatz bananas.

by Anonymousreply 41July 20, 2019 6:50 PM

We had a Kieffer Pear tree in our yard when I was a kid. I love them, big, crunchy and flavorful.

by Anonymousreply 43October 1, 2019 3:03 PM

R20 Asian pears are not mushy. They are crunchy.

by Anonymousreply 44October 1, 2019 3:16 PM

I buy a bag of Barlett organic pears that come in a bag. I buy them when they are a little green. They take turns ripening up and are delicious.

by Anonymousreply 45October 1, 2019 3:20 PM

Pears smell of chemicals to memore than other fruit.

by Anonymousreply 46October 1, 2019 3:23 PM

Garbanzo

by Anonymousreply 47October 1, 2019 3:35 PM

Ya’ll basic.

by Anonymousreply 48October 1, 2019 4:39 PM

A nice crisp white wine, a plate of stilton, and an anjou pear..... you haven't lived until you partake.

by Anonymousreply 49October 1, 2019 4:58 PM

I like pears with Parmigiano-Reggiano and walnuts.

by Anonymousreply 50January 28, 2020 11:44 PM

I like my pears and apples to be crisp in their texture, so Bosc is my favorite variety. But after looking at the site linked in R1, I want to try a Concorde. It looks like it should be crispy like a Bosc, but sweeter. I've never seen one in a store. Does anyone in Texas know which stores might carry them? Central Market, maybe?
