An underrated quality to him: He sounds quite masc when he talks. The first time I saw him on video, many years back, I was unsure whether he was gay because he didn't sound like it. I even feared his being gay was just wishful thinking on my part.

Clearly some marketers see the value in hiring people like Emerson and they likely have the KPIs to prove he (and others of his ilk) are worth whatever they are paying him.

In this case, I'd say odds are good that the room was unsold and that whatever it cost them to feed Emerson was worth whatever publicity he was giving them.
