I did not know Dick Van Dyke had booze troubles

And yet still around at age 149!

The alcohol killed all the germs. He has not even had a cold since 1965.

Yessir he did. I saw something years ago where Sally Anne Howes was talking about how Dick was drunk driving she and the kids around in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and she had to keep a script under her dress because he never knew what his lines were.

Also Dick appeared in a Paul Lynde documentary discussing how he was so sad to see Paul die just a year or so after he'd quit drinking. He said he was so happy when Paul got sober.

He went gray early. He was only in his mid/late 40s here.

I seem to recall he insisted that he was never drunk on set, but would rush home to drink as much as he could all night long. Somehow I doubt that's true.

I preferred his brother, Jerry

by Anonymousreply 5July 2, 2019 1:49 PM

I'm always distracted by the rumors that Dick Van Dyke had a very sizeable Dick.

by Anonymousreply 6July 2, 2019 1:55 PM

Seems to be a very nice man, said some nice things about same sex marriage I recall.

by Anonymousreply 7July 2, 2019 1:58 PM

He’s tall

by Anonymousreply 8July 2, 2019 1:58 PM

he's a big Bernie bro

by Anonymousreply 9July 2, 2019 2:17 PM

Not my favorite thing, R9, but unless he's a Trumper or a Sarandonite I don't care.

He must have been drunk when he did that Cockney accent in Mary Poppins.

The year of that Cavett interview he played an alcoholic in the TV movie "The Morning After" and was nominated for an Emmy.

He and Mary Tyler Moore were big drunks but stayed so slim.

I want to know their secret.

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2019 3:10 PM

He said it took about a decade to live down that interview. Many wound not hire him, especially for a series, because he said he was a drunk. Biggest career mistake of his life.

by Anonymousreply 15July 2, 2019 3:11 PM

When I was a child, I became obsessed with Mary Poppins partly because of him. Of course, I loved Mary and all of her magic, but it was Bert on whom I was crushing!

by Anonymousreply 16July 2, 2019 3:15 PM

He and Mary should have done a production of Who's Afraid of Virdinia Woolfe?

by Anonymousreply 17July 2, 2019 3:21 PM

Well... once upon a time, they might have made an okay Nick and Honey.
